The city of Leicester is located in the East Midlands of England, roughly 90 miles north of London. Now famous as the resting place of the rediscovered King Richard III, Leicester is home to two successful universities, with around 40,000 students.
Leicester is one of the oldest continually inhabited cities in the UK, with a history stretching back to pre-Roman times and a range of buildings and archaeological sites documenting the many periods of its past. It became an important administrative centre during the Medieval era and expanded as a centre for production and trade during the Industrial Revolution.
During this period, Leicester was particularly renowned for the manufacture of shoes and this legacy is reflected in the various footwear and clothing companies that are still headquartered in the city. Leicester is also an important centre for modern UK engineering, with several projects and training schemes supported by its universities.
Postgraduates in Leicester are able to explore the heritage of one of England’s most historic cities whilst also benefitting from access to some of the city’s more modern additions including its many theatres and live music venues and the National Space Centre (which also conducts research in association with nearby universities).
Leicester’s top-ranked university is the University of Leicester – it is usually listed as one of the UK’s top 15 research universities and was famously responsible for the discovery of the remains of King Richard III under a car park in 2012. De Montfort University is also ranked within the UK top 100 and is particularly renowned for its research and teaching in English Literature and related subjects.
Leicester has a strong, diverse economy that offers plenty of opportunities for talented postgraduates wishing to start a career in the city. Leicester and the wider Leicestershire region is home to companies such as Caterpillar, Walkers Crisps and IBM.
