Leicester is one of the oldest continually inhabited cities in the UK, with a history stretching back to pre-Roman times and a range of buildings and archaeological sites documenting the many periods of its past. It became an important administrative centre during the Medieval era and expanded as a centre for production and trade during the Industrial Revolution.

During this period, Leicester was particularly renowned for the manufacture of shoes and this legacy is reflected in the various footwear and clothing companies that are still headquartered in the city. Leicester is also an important centre for modern UK engineering, with several projects and training schemes supported by its universities.

Postgraduates in Leicester are able to explore the heritage of one of England’s most historic cities whilst also benefitting from access to some of the city’s more modern additions including its many theatres and live music venues and the National Space Centre (which also conducts research in association with nearby universities).
