This course is intended to provide you with an advanced understanding of the hospitality and tourism industry as and a managerial perspective of how to run such organisations. After completing this course, you'll have the capacity to be involved in more analytical, developmental and strategic perspectives of the industries than those at undergraduate level, and gain insights of the issues affecting hospitality and tourism.

Equally, this course will provide the opportunity for you to identify and engage with specialisms such as consumer behaviour, marketing, international human resource management, revenue management and international market trends. This Master's degree is intended to provide you with an advanced understanding of the hotel & food services industries and a managerial perspective of how to run such organisations. It is anticipated that after completing this course, you'll have the capacity to be involved in more analytical, developmental and strategic perspectives of the industries and will develop insights into the issues affecting these industries than at undergraduate level.

The emphasis of this course is on accommodation management, food & drink, and the food service sector. As such, this is a course with an operational management focus, although it will also provide you with the opportunity to identify and engage with selected areas of specialism within these industries such as revenue management, IT applications, and human resource management.

You will also have access to a wide range of extra curricula activities and qualifications, such as our visiting speakers programme including representatives from Hilton International, Shangri-la Hotels, Fairmont Hotels, Le Manior aux Quat Saisons and many more. This program covers the art and luxury management sector with a focus on France and its cultural excellence. Taught in English, this program explores the management, sales and distribution of luxury products using the themes of taste and luxury à la française from Louis XIV to present-day France. Themes covered include the French arts de la table, fashion, gemology, cosmetics and fragrances, interior design, furniture, art objects and design, scenery and décor, etc.

The innovative academic program combines lectures with practical field visits major historical monuments, fashion houses, and workshops that represent French cultural excellence. Legal aspects, finance, luxury marketing and management, communication and strategic marketing are all taught by professionals.

Direct interaction with industry players will allow students to build up a network of top professionals in the field and discover the savoir-faire of different sectors.

Structure

The year is made up of 3 terms: 2 terms of classes (Oct-Dec/ Jan-March) and a term of professional experience in the form of an internship (April-June). The first term ends with a group project to validate the term. During the last two terms, students will work on a personal project that they will be expected to present in front of a jury in validation of their diploma “Titre I”.

Each trimester consists of 200 hours of classes spread out over a 10-week period. Courses are taught in English.Participants are attributed a mentor for personalized coaching as well as group methodology sessions to guide them in the conception and realization of their personal project.

1st Term :

The history of art and style (17th-21st centuries), art law, the management of art objects and artistic projects communication and the marketing of art and luxury goods, defining an artistic project (content, business plan, legal structure, communication, marketing), meeting with professionals in situ during visits and workshops.

2nd Term:

e-communication and e-marketing of art and luxury products, negotiation of art objects, promotion of an artistic production, a brand or an artist, contemporary art and luxury, organizing an exhibit, the history of l’art de la table, the history of fashion and luxury products (fashion and accessories, wine and spirits, gastronomy, jewelry and watches, cosmetics and fragrances, niche brands), the history of interior design, meetings with professionals in situ for visits and workshops, methodology and follow up on personal projects.

3rd Term:

Full-time internship along with methodology sessions and personal projects.

The course integrates academic and practical knowledge with practical case studies and live scenarios and you learn to assess situations from financial, commercial and cultural standpoints, to reach decisions on solutions and actions. If you begin your course in September you have the choice to apply for an 8 month paid work placement in a marketing role instead of completing either a dissertation or client project. With specialist modules in luxury businesses you develop marketing strategies in a luxury context and develop and understand how building customer trust and champion luxury brands is critical. Graduates will be well placed to be employed in marketing roles throughout the world in luxury sectors such as jewellery, fashion, tourism, fine wine, spirits and prestige cars. These positions are not confined to in-house marketing management, but also can be in media, digital, brand and communications agencies, in particular those specialising in the luxury marketplace.

Course content

Compulsory Modules

You will study eight compulsory modules and a module which helps develop your professional and academic skills. In addition, you will choose two optional modules and you can complete either a dissertation or client project or, if you start the course in September, you also have the opportunity to apply for an 8 month paid work placement in a marketing role. If you choose not to take a work placement, the course lasts 12 months. If you start in September and take the work placement the course last 17 months.

Teaching and learning

Much of the teaching on the course takes the form of interactive workshops, but there are also lectures from staff and visiting speakers. Lectures, discussions, role-play exercises and seminars are linked with selected case studies and assessments to strengthen your practical analysis and decision-making skills. You will develop your skills in working as part of a team through structured group assignments and online group-based marketing simulation.

You will gain practical experience and put your knowledge of marketing approaches and theory into practice during live research projects for an organisation. Teaching staff at the Business School are engaged in academic research and/or come from an industry background with in-depth practical experience of business and management issues. Visiting speakers from the world of business, consultancies and research bodies augment the programme through leading edge discussions and specialist events.

Teaching Location

If you are starting your course in September 2017 you are likely to experience all your teaching at the Headington Campus.

Field trips

We offer an International Business in Practice Study Trip module. The purpose of this study trip is to give postgraduate students a hands-on, intensive experience with the ideas and practices of global business. The programme will include presentations from local management executives and experts. Students will have direct interaction with management executives and practices through site visits to major corporations and agencies.

This study trip is voluntary and all costs associated with the trip will need to be funded by you. It is not linked to university assessments in any way. If you successfully complete this module you will have the following non-credit bearing module recorded on your transcript: P58335 International Business in Practice: Study Trip.
