Planning is an important function in many professions. You may find yourself working as a consult alongside politicians or private companies. There is also a demand for planners by local councils and state planning authorities. Planners are allied professionals to engineers, architects and environmental consultants. There is also an important role for planners in the development of policy, particularly in international development, where the Faculty holds expertise.

This module considers the whole strategic service planning process, to help you to place workforce planning in a broader context. Planning only makes sense and has value when it is carried out with others, so active engagement with key stakeholders is an important part of this module.

During this module we will address a range of important issues: the meaning of strategy, stakeholder analysis and contextual analysis, and identifying strategic workforce goals. We also consider how identifying a plan will inevitably trigger organisational change or be a response to it. We look at some of the important concepts to consider when introducing change and how these may affect your plan.

This course focuses on strategic entrepreneurial marketing and the development of new business models and value propositions based on in-depth insights of both customer and industry/market sector analysis.

It has a clear emphasis on the strategic utilisation of digital marketing theory, strategy, tools and tactics as well as analysis and evaluation of key analytics and metrics in meeting organisational key performance indicators.

- Digital Marketing Management (September – December)

This course seeks to shape you as a highly competent professional who can continue to develop not only yourself but also the broader sector.

Practice and research-informed learning, teaching and assessment strategies emphasise problem solving, team working and wider appreciation, with functional and procedural knowledge framed within this broader context.

The course will include problem-based enquiry and learning using the environment as an integrative setting, encourage the demonstration of key competencies within a professional, vocational context driven by engagement with practice and prepare you for a future in which the ability to think and change will be key skills.

Broadly speaking, the teaching strategy moves from staff-led during the early stages of the course to student-led towards the end. The early part of the course is intended to provide you with the basic knowledge and skills to understand how the spatial planning system operates and the need to embed the environmental services lens in processes in order to connect planning across different sectors, land uses and scales. This is achieved through staff-led lectures, seminars and workshops.

Later stages of the course are designed to develop your critical and reflective capabilities and make the links between the various spatial dimensions of planning, and between spatial and non-spatial policy intervention. The emphasis is on interactive learning, including student-led workshops, role-plays and simulations to achieve deeper learning and understanding.

We use visiting teachers, field study visits and research informed teaching to engage you with practice and topical issues. The sharing of appropriate modules across courses helps to enrich your educational experience, and expose you to the perspectives, values and attitudes of students from other disciplines.

Degree information

The programme equips students theoretically and practically, engaging them academically and in practice with planning and related fields of knowledge. Students will learn how to think critically, creatively and analytically across different spatial scales, from strategic to local - and across urban design, city planning, place-making, real estate and sustainability arenas - as they seek integrated solutions to defined planning problems.

As host of the industry sector body, the School is establishing networks across the major clients, contractors and supply chains in the Yorkshire and Humberside region. This also includes links to the relevant professional bodies including the Royal Town Planning Institute, who accredit this award and via the Department of Communities and Local Government we receive a number of full time bursaries for students. The Centre for Urban Design and Environmental Management (CUDEM) is the key research centre to which teaching practice is linked. Theoretical Contexts (20 Credits)
Aims to develop students' understanding and critical awareness of the contemporary dynamics of places and communities, seen from a variety of theoretical viewpoints. It also seeks to develop a critical appreciation of the links between these theoretical concerns and changing priorities in planning and regeneration policies. Ethical and personal development considerations form an essential part of this module.

Planning & Making Spatial Strategies (20 Credits)
Reviews the historical evolution of the spatial planning system in the UK, to review its key purposes and principles, and to offer opportunities for students to prepare planning policies for localities of their choice.

Managing Places & Spaces (20 Credits)
Considers how places came to be, various attempts over the years to shape them according to visions of how we should live, an appreciation of current thinking regarding the criteria to be applied to planning contemporary development, the role of development managements in the English planning system, and an understanding of some key methodologies for evaluating the quality of existing places. This is used as the foundation for on which to put forward a development proposal for a city centre site.

Dissertation (40 Credits)
Develops and enhances research skills, connections between theory and practice, the capacity to conceptualise and theorise, together with independent and reflective learning. It serves as the key mechanism for students to develop specialist knowledge and skills in a research topic of their choice.

Policy Implementation & Appraisal (20 Credits)
Critically examines the political, material and organisational context for public policy implementation and evaluation by considering roles and functions of its key players and the influences of previous policy outcomes. It also evaluates a range of approaches to policy resource generation, monitoring and evaluation and their outputs and outcomes.

Strategic & European Contexts (20 Credits)
Requires students to reflect on the interplay of economic, spatial and environmental priorities and their impact on the development and use of land with regard to the potential of different approaches to spatial regeneration in different European regions. A foreign field trip forms an assessed part of this module.

Research Methods (20 Credits)
Explores the nature of research, the identification of researchable agendas, choice of methodologies and development of research plans and protocols together with techniques of data collection and usage. It is a key support mechanism for students to undertake the Dissertation.

Sustainable Communities (20 Credits)
Critically examines historical interpretations of sustainable communities and their policy dimensions and expressions. Students undertake a systematic analysis of a locality and generate sustainability strategies, working to local practitioners as clients and relating proposals to local delivery mechanisms.

Developed in consultation with Industry and the Planning Institute of Australia, the study of Urbanism is a pathway to specialisation as a professional urban planner, urban designer, heritage architect or consultant. This two-year postgraduate program has been developed to address the urgent need for specialists in the planning, development and architectural industries who understand the complex interrelationships between the various aspects of environmental planning and can work at the apex of local and international urban design.

The sustainable management of our cities and regions is one of the most pressing issues in the 21st century. Urban and regional planners are at the forefront of this challenge: working in government and the private sector to guide urban and regional change and to manage the social, environmental and economic impacts of development. Urban and regional planners prepare plans and policies at a range of levels including national, state, regional, local, precinct and site, with specialist planners working in urban design, heritage conservation and housing policy.

The Urbanism (Urban & Regional Planning) Program provides the required knowledge and skills for professional planning practice within Australia. Graduates of the Master of Urban and Regional Planning are eligible, subject to professional experience requirements, for corporate membership of the Planning Institute of Australia (PIA). The program aims to introduce you to contemporary planning theories and debates while instilling professional expertise in key areas of planning practice.

During the program students will engage in an integrative set of core units, introducing key concepts that reach across a diverse range of factors effecting the planning, policy making and urbanisation of our future cities.

The program then culminates in an Integrated Studio capstone unit where you will apply your knowledge to a complex real-world project. You will formulate a compelling ‘urban proposition’ to convince the public, stakeholders, politicians and investors of the benefits of a particular approach or scheme, all in the context of the interdisciplinary and visionary nature of Urbanism. The Studio will emulate professional practice by working with community groups, developers and/or politicians to develop an appreciation of the interrelated strategic, economic, social and environmental context in which urban design occurs.

It is a broad area of work that can require many different skills and others the option of specialisation – be it protecting the historical environment or urban design.

PgDip/MA Town Planning programmes are accredited by the Royal Town Planning Institute. The courses enhance student's employability in planning, property development and research roles in the public and private sectors. This is through focusing not only on the planning system but on broader themes that influence the economic, environmental and social contexts in which we live.

The course enables you to study an area of spatial planning in some depth as many of modules are within a specialist area (urban design, urban regeneration or environmental planning).

Residential

It includes a compulsory one week residential European field study visit, recent destinations have been Venice and Germany. For all new entrants field study visit fees are included in the tuition fees.

You can also choose to study the PgDip for six modules; Full-time (10 months) or part-time (15 months).

Town Planner as a career

Currently there is a national shortage of qualified town and environmental planners in the UK so the demand for our postgraduate courses is particularly high.

The natural career path for graduates is to work as a town planner – this can be for a local authority, as private consultants or for planning government agencies.

Role and responsibilities:

General activities for town planners range from developing creative and original planning solutions to satisfy all parties, to writing often complex reports which make recommendations or explain detailed regulations, to conducting research and analysis to help determine strategic developments.

Most jobs will be largely office-based, but visits to meet clients and attend external meetings are not uncommon. There are opportunities available throughout the country, as every local authority employs planners.

Career progression

Graduates from the programme will emerge with a range of knowledge and skills of value to potential employers and to career progression opportunities. Employment prospects are excellent with demand exceeding supply. Successful planning students are likely to find jobs with local authorities, private consultants in property and planning government agencies.

Developed for marketing practitioners and graduates from areas such as marketing, management and social sciences, this course provides knowledge and skills in the three key areas of strategic marketing; Strategic Analysis, Strategic Marketing and Leadership, and Implementation.

The course has a strong focus on applying theoretical concepts to practice situations, employing real-life case studies and a week-long residential to give you a true understanding of strategic marketing practice. There is also the option to take 6 month work placement as part of the 18 month version of the course to further develop practice understanding and professional competencies.

Course content

What you will study on the MSc Strategic Marketing?
The course starts by embedding the fundamentals of the subject in the learning through core modules covering key areas such as brand management, leadership from a marketing perspective and planning for a global market place. From here you will select four optional modules in areas in which you would like to specialise or across the spectrum to give a broad knowledge base.

These modules consists of insights based topics such as consumer psychology and customer analysis, strategy based subjects such as marketing communications and product management, and implementation in areas such as digital marketing and experiential marketing. The course ends with a dissertation, allowing you to explore in depth a strategic marketing topic of your choice.

Teaching - how is the MSc Strategic Marketing taught?

Lectures

Lectures are a useful way to discuss key material or approaches, deal with issues, explore questions, concepts and theories, or introduce business case study material. During lectures, note taking and listening are essential as they will help you to make sense of what you have seen and heard, to identify and remember key points to understand difficult concepts and organise your material by making links and associations with other material.

Seminars

For small groups – these are structured, student-led sessions in which you might explore ideas in discussion, carry out practical tasks, or practice your research skills. All of these sessions are intended to provide forms of space in which you can discuss and share ideas; as well as develop skills and materials in preparation for assessments. In seminars, reading module materials, note taking and participating in discussion are essential. Actively participating and engaging in seminar discussion enhances presentation skills and the articulation of arguments and ideas and helps you prepare materials for assessment tasks.

Group or individual tutorials

Include structured, formal and informal feedback from your tutors on work in progress or on your ideas for a specific module assignment or project task.

Self-directed/ independent learning

Much of your learning at university takes place outside class sessions. This encourages autonomous learning, providing you with the opportunity for critical self-reflection or space for self-directed reading or research. An example might be a research or practical project linked to a module's learning outcomes that you undertake independently or with a small group supported by your tutor.

Assessment
You will be required to complete a number of coursework assignment for assessment. The coursework can be individual, such as plans, reports, memorandum and essays, or group which will involve activity including presentations and reports. Tutorials will also feature formal and informal feedback.
