Year 1
In your first year, you’ll learn the foundations of restorative dentistry which includes diagnosis and treatment planning, occlusal management, non-surgical periodontology and current concepts in endodontics. You’ll also learn about restoring teeth and tissues and study fixed prosthodontics operative techniques, with hands on components in the Simulated Dental Learning Environment. You’ll also study the restoration of endodontically treated teeth, removable prosthodontics and complete dentures.

Year 2
Successfully complete the modules from your first year and go on to study advanced restorative dentistry in your second year. You’ll get the chance to focus on aesthetics and conservative aesthetic techniques and treatment planning for missing teeth including live implant surgical demonstration – moving up to advanced endodontics, adjunctive periodontal surgery, guided bone regeneration and soft tissue surgery, restorative practice and more.

Final year

Learning and teaching

The programme’s flexible design allows you to study independently, 24/7, and at times suitable to you. The programme will contain two residential weeks based in Birmingham (one week per year), and will allow you to receive direct hands-on tuition from some of the world's most experienced dental educators. You will use the simulation suite at the new £50 million School of Dentistry.

Our course will enable you to develop advanced skills and knowledge in restorative dentistry. Building on basic principles, the course provides consultant-led clinical and laboratory practice. You will undertake restorative cases requiring both routine and complex treatments. This involves treatment planning, clinical procedures and technical work.

The course has a substantial clinical component with clinically related sessions accounting for 60%. Specialists and consultants provide clinical teaching and supervision, supported by a comprehensive seminar programme. You can find profiles of our staff on the School of Dental Sciences website.

We provide an evidence base for restorative dentistry and opportunities for applied research. The research element of the course contributes to 40% of the final mark. You will undertake a research project that contributes to the Centre of Oral Health Research (COHR) research profile. You will also have the opportunity to work with internationally renowned researchers in the COHR.

Description

There are three strands to the course: the scientific basis of endodontology; diagnosis and treatment planning for patients with advanced endodontic problems, clinical treatment of patients with endodontic and other restorative problems, learning research methodology to enable completion of a research project. Subjects include the pathology of apical periodontitis and strategies to manage it effectively.

The course offers a dynamic interaction with other graduate students specialising in prosthodontics and periodontology and the development of skills in understanding and analysing the research base for clinical care.

You will achieve clinical proficiency in endodontics to a recognised UK specialist level, be able to relate endodontic care to other aspects of restorative dentistry, and develop research skills.

There is the opportunity to sit a final conjoint membership examination with the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

Course purpose

The course is designed for qualified dentists wanting to extend their knowledge and clinical practice in endodontology. The course has formal recognition for UK specialist training. We provide extensive contemporary knowledge in endodontology, enabling students to attain clinical proficiency in endodontics to recognised specialist level, to relate endodontic care to other aspects of restorative dentistry, and to learn research methodology.

Course format and assessment

Teaching

The usual training period will be a minimum of 4,500 hours across the degree.

The course content is apportioned approximately as:

This time allocation is flexible and will depend upon the capacity of the trainees to complete the curriculum to a competent level.

If offered a place on the course, overseas students are advised to be tested locally and send the results of these checks with the questionnaire, prior to a separate full test in the UK at the College's Occupational Health Department before the term begins. All offers of a place on a programme are made subject to a satisfactory criminal conviction disclosure. If you are from overseas or have never lived in the UK before, you should contact the relevant authorities in your home country to arrange for the equivalent check to be conducted and/or a certificate of good conduct to be issued.

This two year part-time postgraduate diploma in Operative Dentistry combines seminars, hands-on training and direct clinical contact with patients, alongside self-guided learning. Course participants will study the applied science of operative dentistry and acquire clinical and practical skills in operative dentistry. This training will be delivered at King’s College Dental Hospital, Denmark Hill (attending between 22 and 26 days per year).

Delivery

The course is part time over 18 months (approximately one full day per fortnight contact time) commencing in either January or July. We deliver the course through a combination of:

We select patients for planning, surgery and restoration of dental implants. As far as possible, you will see the same patients through their whole course of treatment.

We encourage that a dental nurse from your team accompanies you at skills training workshops and on teaching clinics. Nurses receive broad instruction in surgical and restorative implant procedures. They will also become familiar with implant product handling.

We run the course in partnership with Newcastle Upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The vast majority of the course takes place at the School of Dental Sciences and Dental Hospital in Newcastle upon Tyne.

Career

We provide professional development in an area not taught in detail at undergraduate level. We have had students start this course with no previous experience of implant dentistry. They have then progressed to carry out implant surgery and restoration in their own dental practices.

Staff

The course director is Mr Francis Nohl, Consultant in Restorative Dentistry. He is an Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer and Specialist in Restorative Dentistry and Prosthodontics. Francis has over 20 years of experience of the surgical and prosthodontic aspects of implant dentistry.

Facilities

The School of Dental Sciences at Newcastle is one of the most modern and best equipped in the country. We have a spacious, purpose-built facility in the same building as the Dental Hospital. This two-year, part-time Postgraduate Diploma in Endodontics combines seminars, hands-on training and direct clinical contact with patients to upskill you in the science and practice of endodontics. Your work with patients from both your own practice and the hospital will contribute a reflective log of treatment that will form a major part of your course assessment and your development.

A research dissertation is required for the MSc qualification, many of which are published in international peer-reviewed journals.

This is a three-year programme leading to an MSc in Endodontics. You will study the scientific basis of endodontology, diagnosis and treatment planning for patients with complex endodontic problems, and clinical treatment of patients with endodontic and other restorative problems. Assessment of each course unit generally follows a standard plan, which involves mid or end of unit assignments (eg literature reviews) and end of semester examinations (for each unit completed during the semester) in the format of OSCEs and written examinations, including MCQs/SBAs.

Clinical progress will be monitored using clinical logbooks and regular clinical competency assessments. Patient case reports outlined in your logbook will provide formative assessment of your clinical competencies during the course.

Career opportunities

Most of our graduates return to their place of employment after completing the course.

A smaller number go on to pursue further academic training and undertake higher research degrees (eg MPhil or PhD programmes).

Accrediting organisations

The course is designed to prepare candidates to challenge the membership in restorative dentistry (periodontology) of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. We will request confirmation of eligibility from the College. This has been provided to our other three year courses.
