This distance learning programme is taught in partnership with Informa and was created in response to the growing demand for legal education in the media sector and specifically the areas of media and entertainment contracts, sports law, intellectual property rights, and advertising law and data protection.

More about this course

This internationally recognised qualification has been developed for those who wish to acquire expertise in media and entertainment law. This is a rapidly growing area of law including intellectual property, contracts, and defamation as these relate to media, including social media, and to areas such as advertising, music and sports law.

Taught in partnership with Informa via their online learning platform, this distance learning course has been designed specifically for those working in, or wishing to enter the media and entertainment fields; or for those with, or without legal backgrounds who wish to broaden their expertise and to understand better the legal issues arising in these areas. It therefore welcomes applicants from both legal and non-legal backgrounds who have the potential to benefit from the programme and includes an introductory module to English law designed to assist those with no prior legal training.

Due to current and varied issues ranging from the way print media is regulated, to the ever increasing problems now facing companies over the misuse of social media, this course aims to bring a structure to the way the media and entertainment world is constantly trying to coexist with the law. The law can be deemed to play catch up with society and one reason for this is due to the expansion of technological developments within the industry; examples of this can be seen with issues such as cybercrime and WikiLeaks which this course will be investigating. The course is designed to merge commercial practical components and the theoretical understanding of the way these two industries work.

The purpose of the course is to enable you to:
-Develop an in-depth and practical understanding of media and entertainment law
-Understand the principles and practice of media and entertainment law and the changing commercial contexts in which these operate
-Analyse issues in media and entertainment from a legal perspective
-Apply relevant law to help resolve issues that arise in media and entertainment practice
-Utilise mediation and other alternative dispute resolution methods to help secure settlements

As well as deepening your understanding of the law our focus throughout the programme is on the practical application of the law. The programme benefits from tutors with strong relevant backgrounds in the academic world and in legal practice with a number practising as barristers or solicitors.

The LLM in Media Law at Queen Mary, University of London allows you the opportunity to gain expertise in a range of legal regimes governing key aspects of the media, from the regulation of all key forms of media content to the regulation of the infrastructures via which that content is delivered, including traditional, new and still-developing media.
In an age of seemingly infinite broadcast channels, online information at our fingertips, and the ever-increasing economic and cultural significance of the entertainment industry, media law has never been more relevant to our daily lives than it is today.

Your fellow students will come from the UK and more than 80 other countries, each able to draw on prior academic and in many cases professional experiences from different jurisdictions to enrich discussion and debate in class.

What is Media Law?

Media law is the study of the regulation of the media, whether in traditional print form, the broadcast media, or in the online arena. Increasingly, media regulations must be, and are being, adapted to take account of new technological developments as the dividing line between online media and traditional forms becomes less pronounced.

Taught Modules

To specialise in this area, you must select 90 credits of modules from this list and do your compulsory dissertation in the field of Media Law (45 credits). The additional 45 credits of taught modules can be in this area or can be unrelated and therefore selected from the full list of LLM modules.

Communication and Media is a close-knit community of dedicated, innovative teachers and researchers that extend a warm welcome to postgraduate taught and research students. Active research

Key areas of research strength include: communication, politics and power; media theory; political and independent cinema; gender and identity in media; media, ethics and human rights; media and war; new media and digital communication; media discourse; global entertainment and media industries; media, space and place; media and heritage; sociolinguistics, communication and language; and media and cultural identity.

This broad range of research expertise underpins the two regular research seminar series that we run – the Liverpool Film Seminar and the Media and Politics Seminar Series – which postgraduate students are encouraged to participate in.

The department is actively contributing to the development of our field through research, key subject associations, conference organisation and speaking engagements, and editorial board membership of significant journals. Our activities include internationally recognised research, linking political science and communication studies primarily through crossover interests in public and digital communication within the British, European and International political and cultural contexts.

Career prospects

Student career development is a major interest for the department and we actively encourage students to integrate career planning into their academic studies. This is promoted through individual modules which have strong policy and career relevant aspects, and a close relationship with the University’s excellent Careers Service who provide bespoke sessions for students.

The MRes Arts may enhance the career prospects of those working or wishing to work in fields associated with the study of Arts subjects or other areas of academic work and study, including teachers, librarians, and professional writers. While managerial positions often require the ability to conduct research or project-work and to demonstrate sustained and complex organisational skills in ways encompassed by this programme, its emphasis on oral and written communication skills as well as on IT-based presentation skills will be useful for many types of employment. Some students may want to take this course for its own sake and for the sake of personal development and the revitalization of subject awareness. Equally, the MRes is designed to prepare students too for further research at MPhil or PhD level, and to enable them to enter postgraduate study, thus offering a first step towards a career in academic teaching and research.

The advanced study of one or more Arts subject on this programme equips students with powers of fine discrimination and judgement that will set them apart in workplaces of many kinds. The skills it fosters are those which enable graduates to deal logically with the complex demands of a whole range of careers. These skills include:

- the ability to process large amounts of information
- the ability to organise disparate material into a coherent argument
- the capacity to compare many different views and come to a decision about the merits of each
- the independence to define a complex project and bring it to completion with minimal input.

Such skills are essential for those considering careers in, for example, journalism, publishing, management, and the law. Graduates have gone on to work in a wide variety of professions. Alumni of SotA Master's degrees include lecturers, communication specialists, broadcasters, writers, teachers, librarians, public relations managers and publishers. MRes Arts students will have access to the University's Careers and Employability Service and to careers events at both School and University level. This course combines academic analysis and commercial practice elements of entertainment law in an international perspective. On this Masters you'll be introduced to media and communications theory, and develop and explore interdisiplinary perspectives on the study of contemporary cultural processes.

The coursework is exclusively theoretically based, so you will need some foundation in the (broadly conceived) intellectual arenas of the social sciences or the humanities in order to grasp the dominating aims and objectives of the programme.

Modules & Structure

A core module will introduce you to media and communications theory, and will enable you to develop and explore interdisciplinary perspectives on the study of contemporary cultural processes.

You choose three options, at least two of which must be offered by the Department of Media and Communications; you can choose one from those offered by the Departments of Anthropology, English and Comparative Literature, and Sociology, and the Centre for Cultural Studies.

You will also complete a dissertation based on independent research, which is supported by a module in research skills training.

In addition to the required core and option modules, a strong emphasis is placed on student participation in the research culture of the department and College.

Assessment

The MA is assessed primarily through coursework essays and written projects. Practical modules may require audiovisual elements to be submitted. It will also include a dissertation of approximately 12,000 words.

Graduates from this programme go on to work in government departments, broadcasting, online media, PR and advertising, international ngos and non-profits, intergovernmental organizations, the entertainment industry, the arts and cultural sectors.

A considerable number of students from this MA also go on to do PhDs in media and communications, as well as cultural studies and related areas, on route to becoming academics and researchers.

The Master of Media and Creative Technologies (MMCT) allows you to choose from one of the four subjects available: Creative Practices, Creative Technologies, Screen and Media Studies (offered under the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences) and Māori Media and Communication (offered under the Faculty of Maori and Indigenous Studies). Each area offers you the opportunity to blend artistic and technical forms in new combinations.

Alongside taught papers, you will work on a year-long supervised programme where you will develop a major work (or works) that serves as the flagship of your graduate portfolio of creative works.

Study under the MMCT will give you extensive collaborative project experience which is supported by technical expertise and advanced creative skills. You will also benefit from substantial grounding in postgraduate academic practice and the deployment of critical and methodological skills in original research.

Course Structure

The MMCT involves one calendar year or one and a half academic years of full-time study, or the equivalent in part-time study.

Candidates must complete 180 points at 500 level, including a creative research thesis equivalent to 90 points and a theory paper equivalent to 30 points, as prescribed in a subject offered for the MMCT:

Students enrolled in the MMCT may take up to 60 points from other subjects, subject to approval from the School. Structure

Final Project & Dissertation
During this final project, you will undertake a project towards your dissertation, typically over the Spring-Summer period (May to September). We offer three options to our students:

Individual research project:

This is based on a research theme selected by you and agreed upon by the lecturing team. Recent examples include:
Building a cheap kinect-like gesture tracking system
AI (rule-based) platform for game level design
Software development for our mobile technology projects (iPhone based)
Assessment
Mainly based on coursework (involving programming), essays, final project and dissertation; some lecturers may also conduct exams/quizzes.

Attendance

The taught programme is organised into three terms (full-time). The Autumn term runs from early October to mid-December, the Winter/Spring term from mid-January to the end of March, and the Summer term runs, typically, from late April to mid-September. Taught modules are given during the Autumn and Winter/Spring terms, while the Final Project takes place during a Summer term (in the second year for part-time students).

This programme is focused on providing you with the skills and experience needed to secure a job in the computer games industry.

Skills

You'll develop excellent games programming skills. These skills are highly transferrable, as games programming is viewed by other industries as being very demanding and requiring a high level of technical ability.

Careers

The global computer games industry is valued at 60 billion USD and is predicted to continuously grow in years to come. It's a mature industry with companies such as EA, Ubisoft, and Blizzard Activision giving long-term career prospects, shares, and benefits. There is a big skills shortage in this growing sector.

The MA Music Industry Entrepreneurship is delivered on the UWTSD London campus and at Tileyard Studios, King’s Cross, London. Tileyard Studios is the largest professional music community in Europe featuring 82 recording studios, 110 entertainment businesses and the new Tileyard Education Centre.

The programme is designed to prepare students for a future as label owners, publishers, managers, promoters, new technology pioneers and creative business specialists. In addition to the UWTSD London Campus facilities and resources, Tileyard Studios provides students with direct access to more than 1000 creative industry entrepreneurs, while developing cutting edge thinking and insight into the management and growth of independent record labels, music publishing, artist management, promotion, marketing and new technology entrepreneurship.

The course provides a critical understanding of music and entertainment management and organisations in a global context both on and offline. The core of the programme focuses on digital and independent entrepreneurial skillsets and practice as well as more traditional business methods within the context of the new mixed media economy. The course consist of six taught modules in Part I and an industry-related major business project in Part II.

Alongside specialised modules in Creative Music Management, Marketing, Live Event Management and New Media Technology, MA Music Industry Entrepreneurship students will develop a major business plan project for presentation to a panel of seed and incubation investors and business angels, curated by Tileyard Studios, seeking to invest in new creative business opportunities and IP.

Students will have access to the new Tileyard Education Centre featuring a professional recording studio, audio-visual tech lab and writing production rooms where they can collaborate with other creative MA students such as Commercial Songwriting and Production.

This industry-centric course also includes regular, large-scale industry networking events, held at Tileyard Studios in partnership with Notting Hill Music and sponsors, an unrivalled masterclass series, a one-to-one electronic mentoring program, work-based learning projects and access to the annual calendar of industry-centric events held on site at Tileyard Studios.
