What’s it like to study a Masters in Sheffield?
Sheffield originally expanded with the development of coal mining and metalworking during the Industrial Revolution. Despite now being one of the largest population centres in the UK, modern Sheffield is a green and attractive urban area, overlapping with the Peak District National Park. Its origins in a network of smaller villages are still evident and the city actually contains more trees than any other in Europe.
With lots of pubs and restaurants, a proud local brewing culture and a range of live music venues, you’ll find plenty to relax with while studying as a postgraduate in Sheffield. Sheffield has long been a hotbed for musical talent, with the likes of Arctic Monkeys, Pulp and the Human League all making their name in South Yorkshire.
The city also has a distinguished sporting tradition and is an ideal home away from home for football fans, featuring two large rival football clubs, Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United, as well as the oldest club in the world: Sheffield FC. More recently, Sheffield has become famous as the birthplace of 2012 Olympic gold medallist, Jessica Ennis-Hill.

Universities in Sheffield
Sheffield’s oldest university is the University of Sheffield, a member of the UK’s elite Russell Group of leading research universities and a British top 15 institution.
It received a university charter in 1905, but traces its origins to the merger of a number of local colleges in the 19th century. The university’s buildings include the Arts Tower: a local landmark and the tallest university building in the UK, famous for its constantly moving paternoster lift.
Sheffield is also home to Sheffield Hallam University, which dates back to 1843, but received its university charter in 1992. Hallam is one of the largest universities in the UK and offers postgraduate courses in a wide range of subjects, emphasising transferrable skills and graduate employability.

Although Sheffield is no longer an industrial powerhouse, it nonetheless has a thriving economy that offers diverse opportunities for talented postgraduates.
