London (not to be confused with the UK capital!) is a city in the Canadian province of Ontario, around 200km south-west of Toronto. Western University (formerly known as the University of Western Ontario) is based in London, along with several other higher education institutions.
The Canadian London was first settled in 1826 in a heavily wooded area which earned its nickname of the ‘Forest City’. Located at the fork of the River Thames, the settlement was incorporated as a city in 1855 and quickly grew into an industrial centre through the 19th century. Nowadays, London’s Famshawe Pioneer Village offers a look at what was like during the early days of the settlement.
Contemporary London is a bustling, mid-sized city with a large student population and a vibrant cultural scene. Museum London has one of the most significant collections of art in Canada, as well as 45,000 historical artefacts relating to the local region. The Museum of Ontario Archaeology, affiliated with Western University, covers 13,000 years of human history in Southwestern Ontario.
Fittingly for the ‘Forest City’, there are many parks and opportunities for outdoor adventure in London and the surrounding area. Springbank Park is the largest of these parks, a 300-acre green space along the banks of the Thames.
Western University offers on-campus, postgraduate-specific apartments, while there are plenty of off-campus housing options in London itself.
Western University is based in London, with a sprawling 400-acre campus in the north-west of the city. Established in 1878, Western University is a public research university with over 30,000 students (4,500 of which are international).
There are three university colleges in London affiliated with Western University: Brescia University College, Huron University College and King’s University College, each offering liberal arts education.
London has a diverse, robust economy with key business sectors in manufacturing, technology, life sciences and digital creative services. There’s also dedicated help available from the London Economic Development Corporation for promising start-ups and entrepreneurs.
