Coventry is a historic city in the West Midlands of England, situated around 85 miles from London. The city is home to two successful universities and around 30,000 students.
As well as being one of the largest cities in the West Midlands region, Coventry is also one of the oldest cities in England, with a rich history as an administrative centre during the Middle Ages.
It later became one of the most important hubs for the British motor industry, home to headquarters and major manufacturing centres associated with famous car companies such as Jaguar and Rover.
One of the most famous residents of Coventry was Lady Godiva, renowned for riding naked through the city in order to protest an unfair tax on its residents.
Masters students in modern Coventry are generally discouraged from similar pursuits, but can still look forward to enjoying life in an affordable and diverse city with many local attractions. These include the remains of famous medieval castles at nearby Kenilworth and Warwick, as well as Coventry’s own museums, art galleries, nightclubs and music festivals. The city’s original cathedral was bombed during the Second World War; its ruins are now a moving memorial site at which services and commemoration events take place.
Coventry’s legacy of high tech industry and design continues to inform its emerging creative and research sectors. The oldest university in Coventry is the University of Warwick, founded in 1965 and consistently ranked as one of the UK’s top ten universities (as well as being a member of the UK’s elite Russell Group).
The city’s other major university is Coventry University, which incorporates the historic Coventry School of Art and Design and offers courses in automotive design that draw upon the city’s proud legacy in this industry.
Coventry offers good opportunities for postgraduates wishing to work in the car industry, with Jaguar Land Rover headquartered in the city. Peugeot and BMW also have a presence in Coventry and the surrounding area, along with IBM and E.ON.
