What’s it like to study a Masters in Delft?
Delft is located in South Holland in the Netherlands, close to Rotterdam and The Hague and with strong transport links to many major cites in Northern Europe.
Architecturally, Delft is characterised by its historic canals, churches, mansions and courtyards. There are also a wide range of museums, markets and pubs for students to explore to explore. Delft has many beautiful medieval churches, the most famous being the Oude Kerk and Nieuwe Kerk (Old Church and New Church). There’s also the 15th century Delft Markt – one of largest and oldest in Europe.
Known as the “City of Orange”, Delft has a strong connection to the Dutch royal family. The founder of the independent Dutch nation, William I of Orange, resided in Delft and was famously assassinated there in 1584.
The city is the origin of the world-famous Delft Blue pottery, which dates back to the 17th century. The recognisable hand-painted white and blue earthenware was popular among the world’s most prosperous families. The Royal Delft factory still produces this traditional pottery today.
Delft has been an important hub for scientific breakthroughs, too. It’s known as the ‘Birthplace of Microbiology’ thanks to the pioneering work of the scientists Antonie van Leeuwenhoek (the ‘Father of Microbiology’) and Martinus Beijerinck.

Universities in Delft
The city hosts the Delft University of Technology (TU Delft), the oldest and largest technical university in the Netherlands. TU Delft is often considered one of the best universities in the world and includes three Nobel Laureates amongst its alumni. The university has around 16,000 students, many of which are international students. It specialises in Design, Engineering and Science. All Masters degrees are taught in English.
Delft is also home to the IHE Delft Institute for Water Education – the largest international graduate water education facility in the world.
