Masters degrees in Mechanical Engineering equip postgraduates with the skills to design, develop and manufacture machinery and their operative control systems.
Taught MSc degrees are typical for the field, though research-based MRes and MPhil programmes may also be available at some institutions. Entry requirements normally include an undergraduate degree in a relevant Engineering subject.
Why study a Masters in Mechanical Engineering?
Training will cover the processes for designing and implementing a range of mechanical equipment and systems within various contexts, from automation and aerospace engineering, to manufacturing machinery itself.
You will explore the latest mechanical engineering tools, interrogating experimental data and undertaking 3D design and digital simulation to prototype and test new machines and systems. Processes include additive manufacturing, solid mechanics and polymer processing, metallurgy and thermos fluid mechanics.
Systems monitoring, control and maintenance is also a key component, within which you will analyse the reliability, integrity and sustainability of machines and power processes. Consideration is also given to environmental legislation, public policy and industry standards.
Careers may include product design and prototyping, front-line manufacturing and machine maintenance, or even consultancy for engineering organisations and associated business.
