BUILDING ON MY COMPUTER SCIENCE DEGREE

After graduating with a bachelor’s in computer science, I wanted to gain management knowledge and the skills needed for today’s business world. Doing a master’s in management was the best choice for me to learn more and develop my commercial awareness.

I was attracted to Bath by its reputation and top rankings. The School of Management provides lots of opportunities and business challenges. These let us gain practical experience outside the classroom and give us access to many organisations. The University provides lots of sessions such as career workshops to develop our employability. Some of these specifically focus on improving your soft skills. They’re really practical and helpful.


A WONDERFUL YEAR

I’ve had a wonderful year living and studying in Bath. The city is beautiful, dynamic and safe and the campus is incredibly well equipped. The University is diverse with students from all over the world. This creates an international and friendly learning environment. I love working and studying with students from different backgrounds because I can learn a lot from them.

EXPANDING MY KNOWLEDGE AND BUSINESS SKILLS

Studying the MSc in Accounting and Finance has been essential to my career path. It’s not only expanded my breadth of knowledge in a global context but also enhanced my business skills such as teamwork and analytical thinking. It’s also been a great opportunity to gain cross-cultural experience from making international friends and living in a foreign country.


CHOOSING BATH

Since I was a child, the UK has always been my first choice for doing a master’s because of its worldwide academic reputation. The University of Bath caught my attention with its high ranking. I was also attracted by the intensive learning modules and diverse teaching methods. The School of Management is also known for its high-profile professors with in-depth knowledge and industry experience.

In terms of the city, I never stop being stunned by Bath’s beauty, where every corner tells a story of British history. It gives me a sense of home that cannot be found anywhere else.


LANDING MY DREAM JOB AT PWC

There is no doubt that studying the MSc in Accounting and Finance helped me to land my dream job at PwC UK. I gained knowledge that’s proved essential for applying for finance-related jobs. I also developed my teamworking skills, which are highly appreciated by employers. I also received great support from the School’s career service in preparing my application.


ONE OF THE BEST DECISIONS I'VE MADE

Choosing the MSc in Accounting and Finance is one of the best decisions I’ve made. I’ve grown significantly, not only in terms of knowledge but also mindset. I’ve learned to embrace different perspectives, stay hungry for knowledge and adapt to another culture. Above all, I’ve found my second home with international friends who are always by my side.

I can safely say my year at Bath was easily the best yet for me, largely due to the class I was a part of, the friends I made, and the beautiful city I lived in. The course was delivered by some of the best academics who were friendly and engaging, and it equipped me with a valuable set of skills to take forward for success.


JOINING THE SPACE INDUSTRY

Krupa Nanda Kumar graduated in 2019 with an MSc in Innovation and Technology Management.
The careers support from both the School of Management and the University’s Careers Service provided guidance from the very beginning of my studies, as I struggled to understand where to start or what to do after graduation.

Once I gained momentum, I was on track and applying to industries I had shortlisted. It was a challenging process, but eventually I had success and, after graduating in 2019, was thrilled to receive a job offer for a position in the UK.

I always wanted to get a job in the UK and work in a big cultural hub like London, particularly in the European space sector. I am fortunate to be on this journey, working in the space industry, with a widely known satellite and space operations organisation as my employer.


WORKING IN THE UK

As I am a citizen of India, I do need to be sponsored under the Tier 2 work visa scheme in order to work in the UK. My company is a licensed sponsor and, through the necessary formalities, I obtained my current work visa for my employment.

My job gives me a sense of purpose every day as we try to solve the most challenging environmental and climate related problems through innovative satellite-based services. The reason I chose the course at Bath was to equip myself with the necessary skills and knowledge to do exactly that, innovate and build in a way that is commercially accessible for the world to use and benefit from.

To be able to do this, and stay in the UK and live in the heart of bustling London, provides me with the best work life balance.

ENHANCING MY EMPLOYMENT PROSPECTS WHILE MAKING GLOBAL CONNECTIONS

I initially visited the University because of the reputation of the School of Management, particularly their careers team. I knew the University of Bath would help me build my network and enhance my employment prospects.

The promise of being able to learn with a diverse range of nationalities was also a major reason why I chose to study here. We all come from different countries, academic backgrounds and professional experiences. You don’t get that opportunity at most other universities.


KEEPING REALLY BUSY

The course keeps us really busy. We have corporate networking events, guest lectures from industry experts and business competitions. We have two-hour lectures for each module, and a compulsory seminar every other week. You can also expect a lot of group work assignments. But you’re also given time for self-study.

Our professors are really invested in helping us achieve our goals. My business ethics professor encouraged us to enter our essays into national competitions. With his help, I entered the PRME Writing Competition and came third.


LOTS OF PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE

The MSc in International Management attracted me because it combines practical experiences with developing understanding of the increasingly globalised marketplace.

I really enjoyed the Practice Track because it gave us the opportunity to take part in something other than a standard dissertation. We had the opportunity to present our own findings on gender diversity and pay and reward strategies to Deloitte. We also organised fundraisers around Bath for a local children’s charity. What made the Practice Track stand out compared to writing a dissertation is that we benefitted from putting our academic knowledge into practice. We also got to meet incredible people along the way.


FIRST-RATE CAREERS SUPPORT

The School of Management’s Careers Team have been very supportive in every step of the job application process. They are very hands-on, organising skills workshops, one-to-one career development sessions and corporate networking events. Their help boosted my employability, and because of them I’ve been able to secure a graduate scheme position with Dyson in international marketing.

PURSUING A CAREER IN FINANCE

With a background in consultancy, I have always been interested in financial solutions, particularly creating and executing deals for clients in the healthcare industry, to create long term synergies, reduce costs and increase profit margins.

My interest in this was solidified while I was interning in the investment banking division at Rand Merchant Bank. I worked closely with ultra-high net worth individuals and family offices on deals, due diligence and capital raising (investment teasers).

During this time I realised that transaction advisory provided the ideal opportunity for me, to combine my keen interest for finance and problem solving skills to deliver unique solutions for clients.


RECEIVING CAREERS SUPPORT

While studying at the University of Bath, I was thrilled to receive a job offer from RSM UK as a Corporate Finance Executive. I was thankful to the School of Management MSc careers team, who helped me through the recruitment process. They looked at my cover letter and CV, to provide advice and guidance on how to make it suitable for finance roles in the UK.


WORKING IN THE UK

There is no place like the UK, and especially London, for finance. The city is full of high-quality firms, banks and private equity houses who are always looking for mergers, acquisitions, or investments.

RSM UK serves the middle market and provides the opportunity to work with some high growth companies with lots of potential. This was something that really interested me. And thanks to RSM UK, who is currently sponsoring my Tier 2 General Visa, I was able to accept the position and stay working in the UK.

I have spent some time in the audit team for training purposes, and recently transitioned to the Corporate Finance team. In a matter of weeks, it has lived up to what I have hoped for. I have already assisted on multiple financial and vendor due diligence projects for acquirers over Europe, Scandinavia, and the US. The fast-paced environment suits me best and I am really enjoying the new job.

Working and living in the UK is something very special and I am enjoying every moment of it. The UK is full of industry veterans willing to help and teach, and the country is full of history and beautiful locations to visit. I am finding settling in a great experience so far.

A SAFE AND BEAUTIFUL CITY

I visited Bath in 2010 and it won my heart with its beauty. You can’t find another city like this as it has its own unique architecture and history. I wanted to study in a safe and beautiful city. Being close to the airports was also important so I had the opportunity to travel. Rankings were also a top priority and Bath is ranked highly for accounting and finance.


PLENTY OF OPPORTUNITIES TO LEARN AND DEVELOP

I really enjoy my degree in Finance with Banking. All the modules are really interesting and relevant for careers in the finance industry. The best thing about my course is the support from the professors. They will always give you a hand if you don’t understand something. So you can always keep learning and developing yourself. Bath is a place where you can become a better version of yourself. It’s amazing.


APPLYING THEORY TO REAL LIFE

I really enjoyed the Practice Track because it offers the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge in practice. The company project was really challenging as we had to do an analysis of a very broad topic in a short time period. Organising a fundraising event for the charity developed our organisation and communication skills. And writing the reflective report enhanced our writing skills.


GETTING A DREAM JOB

I definitely feel that I chose the right degree for my future career. All the technical questions that I was asked in interviews were covered during my degree. Having the right knowledge is key to getting a dream job.

I found out about the job when I went to a University careers fair. I met a Global Risk Analyst from the bank, and he talked me through a few different roles within their risk department. It was very useful.

It was a tough process to get the role. Merrill Lynch only take a handful of people on their graduate scheme each year. I believe the support I got from the School of Management helped me to succeed.

My master’s degree has helped so much. As well as developing my finance knowledge, I’ve also had help building the skills I needed to get a job and lots of advice about work visas. My course included regular career workshops. We all learnt about writing CVs and covering letters, as well as what to expect from interviews and assessment centres. We had a mock assessment centre as part of this, which was useful for learning about what they are and how they work. This helped ease my nerves about doing the real thing.

The Future Business Challenge (FBC) helped with this. FBC is a group activity for MSc students. We visited Ted Baker in London, Handelsbanken in Bath and Cheddar Gorge. We heard about the challenges they face as real businesses and spoke to employees about their roles. At the end of this, we did a presentation on our FBC work. Doing this presentation in front of representatives from the businesses really helped me with my public speaking.

Working with other students was great. I’m from a pure accounting and finance background, but I worked with students from Marketing and International Management. Even though we all study in the same School, it was interesting to find that people have such different perspectives on a given project. This, of course, is what real working life is like.

I would absolutely recommend doing a master’s with the School of Management. It’s very challenging academically, and has given me the technical skills I’m going to need in my future banking work. The teaching staff and Careers Team really care about students. That is one of the most important things that I recommend the School for.

WHY I CHOSE TO STUDY AT BATH

Before beginning my MSc in Sustainability and Management, my previous role in project management included working on sustainability-focused projects. It was these aspects of the job that gave me the most joy and personal fulfilment. I perform best when I’m engaged with work that makes a meaningful impact.

Conversations with friends and alumni who had studied at Bath made me aware of the University's high standards and great culture. Reading more about the modules made the decision to apply quite easy, as the majority aligned with my interests.


MY EXPERIENCE AFTER GRADUATION

After graduation, I continued my role as a Sustainability and Partnerships Associate at Action for Sustainable Development (A4SD), a UN Civil Society Platform.

I was delighted to recently attend the United Nations Civil Society Conference in Support of the Summit of the Future in Nairobi, Kenya. I was very honoured that I was invited to sit on a panel and speak about the work of A4SD alongside presenting some key findings from my MSc dissertation regarding Sustainable Development Goals Implementation and Engagement within the Global South.

In April 2024, I transitioned into a new role as a Sustainability Consultant at Buro Happold. I've had the opportunity to work on groundbreaking and exciting projects, such as:
- research and innovation on advanced sustainable technologies
- master planning and design for sustainable new cities
- work to achieve sustainability certifications


HOW MY MSC COURSE HELPED ME TO GET WHERE I AM TODAY

All aspects of my MSc course have helped me. My MSc helped me to develop the mindset to complete work to an excellent technical standard, with high accuracy and to a deadline. These skills have been invaluable in a professional setting. The ability to back up my ideas with strong academic knowledge and competence is also extremely beneficial.

Most importantly, I would recommend and encourage all MSc students to engage in extra-curricular opportunities. Participating in and winning the Sustainable Business Challenge was pivotal in my career. It meant I could build a relationship with A4SD and I interviewed many of their partners for my dissertation. I was also asked to share my experience during my interview for my current role at Buro Happold. My decision to apply for an MBA programme was motivated by several factors, but primarily, my desire for personal and professional growth. In my previous role as an electrical engineer, I encountered challenges due to a lack of management skills. While I excelled in the technical aspects of my job, I realised that to advance in my career, I needed a comprehensive understanding of business strategies and leadership.

When considering the MBA programme at Bath, several things stood out and aligned with my aspirations. The diverse modules offered by the Bath MBA immediately caught my attention. Given my uncertainty about which specific business area to pursue, the Bath MBA has allowed me to explore various areas of business and management.

The diverse backgrounds of my colleagues have enriched my learning journey. This collaborative environment has allowed me to learn from others. We share insights and experiences that I wouldn’t have encountered otherwise.

The programme’s blend of in-class and out-of-class activities has been exceptionally beneficial. I’ve had sessions on crafting effective CVs and job-hunting strategies. I’ve also received lifestyle support through networking events and practical sessions.

Already, the MBA has begun shaping my career trajectory. Through assignments, I’ve learned about my strengths and weaknesses, which has improved my confidence. I am now considering job roles that I might have hesitated to apply to before. The MBA has given me the courage to pursue opportunities that match my evolving aspirations.

NOT A STRANGER TO BATH

I’d already completed an MEng Mechanical Engineering degree and placement here. So studying the MSc in Entrepreneurship and Management was my sixth year as a student at the University. Bath is a gorgeous place to live and study, and the University is ranked amongst the UK elite in a variety of areas, including management and engineering.

The University offers loads of opportunities to explore new hobbies and sports. There are all sorts of socials and events taking place on and off campus, so there is always something interesting and exciting to keep you busy. Bath also benefits from having a more relaxed lifestyle compared to larger cities while also being full of student life.


A DIVERSE CLASS

My MSc was diverse, with people from a large variety of cultural and academic backgrounds, making it an exceptional social experience. I feel lucky for making friends from all over the globe, while having the chance to get involved with really exciting projects.


WORKING ALONGSIDE A REAL-LIFE ENTREPRENEUR

The course content definitely lived up to my expectations. The quality of teaching and support has been excellent.

The highlight of my degree has to be my dissertation. I chose to do it in collaboration with an entrepreneur who I met through a university networking event. To research, explore and develop her engineering start-up’s business idea, I got exposure to the entrepreneurial process while talking to industry experts. This provided me with valuable insights and lessons.


OPENING PLENTY OF CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Although I want to develop professionally within the field of engineering and technology, my MSc will help me use my business, management and entrepreneurship skills. It will widen my options, giving me access to more business-oriented roles and entrepreneurial ventures.

GAINING INDUSTRY EXPERIENCE

One of the main reasons for choosing the MSc in Operations, Logistics and Supply Chain Management was that it offers a unique consulting project. This allows me to take part in a real-life project and work with a client throughout the course. This not only helps me to apply the skills and knowledge from lectures, but also offers a great opportunity to gain industry experience and prepare for my future career.


COMBINING ASSIGNMENTS, LECTURES AND PROJECT WORK

Apart from exams, we had either an individual assignment or group project for almost every unit. My group would use our spare time to arrange frequent meetings and work on the project together.

The School encouraged us to prepare for lectures. This meant reading case studies, journal articles or books to have a general idea of the upcoming lecture and be able to engage in class.

You can also choose to take part in societies, sport clubs or School of Management activities like the Community Challenge.


A FRIENDLY, INTERNATIONAL ATMOSPHERE

I think Bath is one of the best cities to both live and study in the UK. Not only because of its historic architecture, but also its friendly, international atmosphere. I really enjoyed going out with friends, having a pint in cosy pubs, walking around Alexandra Park, and going to exhibitions in the city’s galleries and museums.

The University has a great reputation both nationally and internationally, especially its School of Management. During my time here, I had a deep connection with the local community and made a bunch of friends from all over the world. This year will always be a positive and meaningful memory that I’ll never forget.

CHOOSING AN MSC IN BUSINESS ANALYTICS AT THE SCHOOL OF MANAGEMENT

I learned about the University of Bath during my second year of undergraduate studies. But it wasn’t until I attended a scholarship fair in Vietnam and spoke to the Postgraduate Taught Student Recruitment Manager that I decided to apply. His insights about the MSc in Business Analytics and the University’s scholarships inspired me. Fortunately, I was awarded a £20,000 scholarship to study at the University of Bath.

As someone interested in both business and data, the course perfectly combines these two areas. What excited me most was the chance to gain hands-on experience through industry partners and learn directly from a specialist with IBM working experience. The opportunity to dive into real-world settings drew me to this course, as it aligns with my goal to turn data into impactful business solutions.


MY FAVOURITE PART OF MY EXPERIENCE

The best thing about my experience is the people I’ve met. Our Director of Studies is incredibly supportive and an excellent professor, always encouraging us to push ourselves. I also had the chance to meet some amazing friends. We are all from different countries and backgrounds, but surprisingly we have so many things in common. The people I’ve met at Bath are and will always be one of the highlights of my experience here.

As I came straight to my master's from my undergraduate degree, being able to work with and learn from people with years of experience is such a great privilege. Their ideas, perspectives and insights don’t just help me improve my technical skills, but also broaden my mindset about business analytics.


THE CHALLENGES OF LIVING IN THE UK CLIMATE

The weather in the UK was the aspect I needed the most time to get used to. In Vietnam, the weather is usually quite hot, so I’ve never experienced the cold temperatures of Bath before. Sometimes, the temperature drops to below 0°C but I'm always warm and comfortable inside the School of Management and my accommodation.

My advice to international students coming to the UK is that umbrellas, warm clothing and waterproof shoes should be at the top of your supplies list. Pack just enough everyday clothing, as you can easily find waterproof jackets and shoes here. Many stores offer student discounts or seasonal sales, so you don’t need to worry about bringing everything from home.
