About Vrije Universiteit Brussel

Why is the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (literally translated as “Free University of Brussels”) not just the Universiteit Brussel (“University of Brussels”)? There is a good reason for it. The V in VUB stands for the Dutch word, “vrijheid”, meaning “freedom”, and dates back to 1834, when the universities were controlled by religion and governments. Advocates for open intellectual questioning went on to found the VUB as a beacon of independent enquiry, separate from any external authority or influence.

Equality, openness and tolerance are at the core of our humanistic vision. We support our students to help them develop into autonomous, responsible and critical-thinking world citizens.

For more than 190 years, we have been committed to providing answers to the challenges of tomorrow. How do we achieve this? With excellent scientific research, high-quality education and a strong social drive.

VUB ensures that students are well-prepared for their future careers by equipping them with both academic and professional competencies. Alongside academic knowledge, students acquire practical and communicative skills, teamwork abilities, problem-solving techniques, and innovation capabilities. Through practice-oriented course units and internships, students receive feedback from teachers, peers, and professionals, fostering confidence and success in their careers.

VUB empowers students to take ownership of their learning journey, encouraging autonomy and self-regulation. By providing opportunities for personalised learning paths, the university nurtures students' unique talents, ideas, and ambitions. Supported by a culture of openness and mentorship, students are encouraged to embrace their individuality and contribute meaningfully to society.

I’ve lived in Britain most of the time and finished a bachelor on Environmental Sciences in England. But then I moved to Belgium because part of my family lives here. Brussels is a very international city and I’m getting a lot out of the master. I enjoy living here and never felt unwelcome. The Master of Science in Geography allows you, depending on your background, to tailor the courses to what you want to do. I must confess that it is harder than I expected. But I’ve accepted the challenge!

I studied Botany and Zoology at the University of Nairobi, and am now enrolled in the MSc Biology, profile Human Ecology at the VUB. My dream is to play an important role in plant ecology and conservation. Human beings are central to environment reconstruction and degradation and prudent management would avert possible ecological challenges and impacts. Studying Human Ecology at the VUB gives me the recognition and the knowledge and skills needed to help my people and my country. It has a holistic approach to science, combining theoretic, practical as well as field work. The dedicated professors coach us, inspire us, and challenge us to be innovative. I have also learned how to do oral exams. They are not common in Kenya, but teach you important social skills.

IPMB has been a propelling force for my career development. Such is the quality of education provided by IPMB that, in addition to the offer in Germany, I have a second PhD offer with the West African Rice Development Agency (WARDA), to work on the genetic mechanisms underlying drought resistance in rice. Part of this work will be conducted at the biotechnology facility of the University of Cornell in the USA. However, I decided to accept the German offer.

Studying at VUB gives me the flexibility to balance studies and work. My programme focuses on salient business disciplines within an international environment. It prepares students for a global career, with opportunities across many sectors and industries. Additionally, it’s great that the professors actively guide us in our activities. I am looking forward to learning more in this interesting programme.

I am Portuguese and I studied Meteorology in my home country. After my bachelor I wanted to spread my wings and looked on the internet for something like a Master in Geography. Most of the English programmes are on very specific subjects. What attracted me in this master in Brussels was exactly its multidisciplinary approach. Besides your specialisation it also offers you a wide curriculum in physical and human geo-sciences. This means that you can really personalise and specialise your programme and still have a broad overview of everything Geography offers.

Choosing to study at VUB has been a transformative decision. The MSc. in Biomedical Engineering, the AI and Digital Health track, offers cutting-edge insights and a dynamic curriculum that blends theoretical knowledge with real-world applications. I am a Master student in Genetics, Cell and Developmental Biology. I have always dreamed of finding a new treatment for a life-threatening disease such as cancer. That is why I knew early on in my studies that my preference would go to Genetics, Cell and Developmental Biology. The VUB gives you the opportunity to partly develop a tailor-made study programme, so it fits perfectly with your needs and interests.

Also I must add that the philosophy of the VUB made me decide to do my Biology studies there, as for me independent research is inherent to life.

“ There has been light from the beginning. But we hardly measure the importance of light in our daily lives. Light is nowadays used for everything from internet cables to low cost light sources. However, this is just a beginning and we have many more exciting discoveries to make and applications to invent. I have understood this as I was studying photonics at VUB in the framework of the Master programme (Erasmus Mundus, at that time). As students, we were exposed to interdisciplinary curricula on how light aids in and interacts with various other disciplines. We also witnessed a number of close collaborations with various industries, which gave us a unique opportunity to understand how photonic inventions make their way to market. The gained knowledge helped and steered me tremendously as I continued on developing photonic sensors for biosystems during my PhD at EPFL and now inventing optoelectronic micromachines as a PostDoc at MIT. I can't stress enough how innovative and visionary this programme is. “

You redefine your life journey with every decision you make, but some have a bigger impact. For me, deciding to study at VUB was one of those big, yet best decisions I’ve ever made. Studying in an international environment with caring individuals who strive to build a better future and expand the edges of science is always fascinating. VUB gave me the opportunity to apply what I learned at university in real life. Apart from the fact that Belgium is a welcoming country, I found the academic atmosphere at VUB to be thought-provoking. I was able to ask the professor any question that came to my mind, whenever I wanted to. I feel really lucky to be at VUB.

The International Programme Molecular Biology (IPMB) changed the course of my career. One of the courses called “Social and Economic Aspects of Biotechnology” helped me to understand the facts, myths and controversies surrounding the world of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and their application in modern biotechnology. Today, I am a biosafety officer in charge of analyzing and reviewing applications for GMO work and related activities, and I also monitor compliance with biosafety laws.

It’s a challenging programme but I appreciate all the measures taken by VUB in ensuring the wide range of resources available. I’m hoping that graduating with this degree will open doors to opportunities I’ve been looking for. I would totally recommend students from my country to choose VUB as their higher education institution.

I loved the multilingual atmosphere of the programme, university and city! My professors were highly qualified and very understanding, engaging and attentive. One should not hesitate to try a new experience especially in exploring new matters in linguistics and literary studies.

As a master’s student in chemistry, who is originally from Chile, studying at VUB has been a really positive experience. One of the things I appreciate the most is how diverse and multicultural the VUB is—I’ve had the chance to make both local and international friends who share my interests and with whom I can truly be myself. The campus itself is a great place to study and relax, with plenty of green spaces, cozy study areas, and nice spots to grab a bite, chat with friends, or practice sports. However, what truly makes VUB special to me, is the professors. They are not only passionate and knowledgeable, but also genuinely care about their students. They’re approachable and always willing to meet outside class, whether to clarify a concept, help with coursework, or offer guidance. Their support and flexibility have made a huge difference in my experience here. Studying at VUB has been a great experience. The education here is excellent, there are many study options, and the campus is truly welcoming. Having supportive professors and friends has made learning more enjoyable and motivating, which is why I’ve been able to learn a lot and I feel right at home here.

"A well balanced mix of physical, social sciences and spatial modelling skills is what attracted me to study geography, and this is exactly what I got when I started out at VUB. I chose to specialise in GIS and spatial modelling, yet my master programme allowed me to explore other paths as well. My fields of interest were clearly reflected in the choice of my master thesis which focused on spatial analysis of rural poverty in southwest-Ethiopia, for which I had the opportunity to perform field work in this fascinating country."

I wil remember my experience as a student of Economic Diplomacy at the Brussels Diplomatic Academy (BDA) as one of the most formative of my life.
The choice of classes is very broad, and it is an asset indeed, as it provides students with the capacity of understanding both the needs of public and private institutions. This is a quality that makes your profile stand out and brings an interesting (and quite rare) differentiation to your resume. I can confidently say this as a young professional who got a full-time contract in a Belgian leading company after completing there the academic internship provided by the BDA.

I chose VUB because I appreciated that the programmes not only focus on theoretical knowledge but also equip students with professional experience through internships and trainings. Moreover, Brussels is a vibrant and student-friendly city; perfect atmosphere for international students! I had a gratifying experience thanks to the support from the friendly staff, dedicated professors and enthusiastic assistants from the very first moment I arrived.

I chose to study at VUB because I earned a scholarship in my country. I wanted to study in an international environment, so VUB was the right place for me. I was excited when learning about this English-taught programme. Many examples from the real world are mentioned during the classes. Studying here has been an amazing experience!

As a former engineer, I am incredibly grateful to VUB because they gave me the chance to follow my passion for media. I love this programme! Lectures are primarily theoretical but with the internship, I also gained practical work experience. Nothing was bad or boring for me during those two years in Brussels (except maybe the pandemic).

VUB has provided me with the skills and knowledge to kick-start my career. The courses helped me earn an internship in Brussels through which I’ve gained practical experience, and this has opened many doors. Additionally, as an international student, the activities helped me integrate and make lifelong friendships worldwide.

VUB is located in Brussels, a multicultural city which provides excellent teaching resources and is open-minded. The Electromechanical Engineering programme cooperates with world-renowned universities in terms of advanced technology. Although I was an international student with a different educational background, adapting to studying at VUB was an extremely pleasant experience. The best thing about this programme was the strong link between theory and practice, which trained me to become an academic professional. I have found my true calling!

The IPMB MSc was extremely important in my career development as it paved the way for me to receive a promotion from the University of Zambia's staff development program (as a trainee lecturer) to the position of a full-time lecturer at the institution. The MSc was also pivotal in allowing me to successfully compete and receive a PhD scholarship in the United Kingdom.

VUB is known for academic freedom, great research facilities as well as excellence in higher education. They encourage students of various countries to join the courses offered by them, which results in a diverse student ratio. I get to explore the cultural diversity in Brussels every day. Learning a new language is easy as you gain access to native speakers throughout the country. Overall, I’m thrilled to be a part of the VUB student community and will always cherish my exquisite experiences at the university.

After completing my bachelor’s degree in Germany, I started the “Molecular Biology” master’s program at VUB in the agro-and plant biotechnology profile. The program strikes a good balance between courses on general molecular biology theory and profile-specific courses, and the large number of electives allowed everyone to dive into their favorite topics. We learned really useful skills such as how to give good presentations and write project proposals, and reflected on our responsibilities as scientists in courses on the challenges and regulation of biotechnology. The lab rotations gave us the opportunity to get insights into the research of different groups at VUB and we performed small research projects. The oral exams in the end of each semester were quite stressful, but they helped to develop a deeper understanding of the course material, and the professors were generally very friendly and encouraging. My master’s thesis on RNA mobility and gene editing motivated me to continue with a PhD in this field. I really liked the international aspect of the master’s program and met very good friends with whom I often enjoyed breaks in the sun or grabbed a sandwich in the cafeteria. One of the best decisions I made was to join the VUB orchestra where I met great people and travelled to different Belgian cities for rehearsals and concerts.

I was drawn to the Master of Biology (Environment, Biodiversity & Ecosystems) by its internship option and the numerous opportunities to engage in field excursions. In this academic field, practical work is as crucial as theoretical work, and the VUB offers a superb balance. Studying in the heart of the environmentally progressive European Union offered me the opportunity to observe and learn among students and professors who share a similar passion for conservation. The VUB’s approach to education also guarantees that professors have ample personal time for you. Thus, real kinships are developed with your instructors. I am glad I used this chance to acquire and develop the scientific skills needed to succeed in the real world.

The MSc. in Biomedical Research is a unique programme, which allows you to both acquire knowledge in various topics and gain a wide range of practical skills. Based at the campus in Jette, a green and quiet area, it’s easy to focus on your academic goals during the day and explore Brussels in the evening. Sure, there are challenges, but thanks to VUB’s support, its staff members and student community, everything is possible!

I studied Biology in Rome with the aim of going abroad to study the marine environment and really touch with my hands what it means to work in this field. The Master in Marine and Lacustrine Science and Management at VUB fitted perfectly with what I was looking for. Not only does it allow you to acquire a strong knowledge of both marine and freshwater ecosystems, but the international nature of the programme opens you up to different cultures and traditions and gives you the possibility to see the world through their eyes. Studying at VUB was a completely different academic experience than I was used to. It taught to me to cope with what is ‘new’ and ‘different’ and broadened my mind. I would do it again in a heartbeat!

Many professors have inspired me on a personal and professional level through their passion, expertise and attention to the needs of students. I enjoyed the practical aspect of most courses that included group projects, some of which were applied in real-life contexts. These projects have not only made learning more meaningful, but they have also given us the opportunity to practice soft skills such as collaboration, communication skills, organizational skills and leadership skills.

Studying Molecular Biology at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) has been an intellectually enriching experience, providing both academic and personal growth. The program offers a well-balanced integration of theoretical knowledge and practical applications, particularly through research rotations that have enhanced my critical thinking skills and demonstrated their relevance in addressing real-world challenges. The faculty members are not only highly knowledgeable but also approachable and supportive, fostering an environment that encourages discussion, critical inquiry, and intellectual engagement.

I chose to study the MSc. in Computer Science at the VUB because it was in English and matched my interest in programming languages. My courses were very interesting. The structure of the programme gives a lot of freedom to the student to build their curriculum. The approach was different compared to my previous studies which focused more on pure engineering. The atmosphere at the VUB is very welcoming, and the programme has both local and international students. There is also an extensive network of international students at the university.

I especially liked the environment of the Software Languages Lab (one of three labs of the department of computer science), where I developed my master thesis. During my thesis, the lab also gave me the opportunity to cooperate with an international research lab in France. Finally, I got the opportunity to pursue a PhD within the same lab, something I never expected when I started the Master's programme. I am now two years into my PhD, working in an open-minded and international research environment at the VUB.

The Master of Sciences in Management teaches us both a general and in-depth knowledge of management sciences. I compared several management science programmes but the only comprehensive programme is definitely the one offered by the Solvay Business School of the VUB. This programme also gives students a good basis in statistics, which is an added value. Brussels is a multicultural and vibrant city that offers plenty of opportunities on the labour market. And the VUB reflects this feeling from its campus. Moreover, this programme welcomes students from all over the world.

Studying the MSc. in communication studies (Digital Media in Europe) has been an excellent learning opportunity for me. The meticulously planned programme offers a comprehensive understanding of a rapidly digitalised world and its requirements. Additionally, studying in the centre of Europe gives me a chance to see the work of many companies and organisations, and to participate in their events first hand.

Studying abroad always opens doors to new experiences. And what better place to live them than Brussels, a city that is influenced by all cultures from all around the world.
Thanks to many international students, I was able to learn from each culture and expand my network. VUB has given me a new vision of the world.

“One of the best qualities of the programmes is the commitment that the BDA devotes to the students. The setting of the BDA classes also fosters the students to think of themselves as professionals as there is a strong focus on practical issues related to business and diplomacy. By continuously solving problems using the framework, you are prepared for managing your working life after graduation.
I think there is only so much that education can do in determining the long-term success of one’s professional life; most is up to the individual. Through the programme, I learned many skills that I use daily in my current position as Secretary-General at the Swedish-Portuguese Chamber of Commerce in Lisbon and I firmly believe that the programme will be to the benefit of anyone wishing to pursue a career within the realm of economic diplomacy.”

At VUB you experience diverse cultures and exchange knowledge while growing professionally and personally. With an ageing population there is a high demand for professionals who study Gerontology and if you are interested in studying ageing on a multidisciplinary basis, VUB is the right place to start.

Why did I choose the International Business Master at VUB? First, Brussels and VUB present you with great opportunities to collaborate with people from all around the world. Second, this programme challenges us to learn different subjects like Marketing, Law or Finance in an international context. And finally, for the VUB values that are shared with its students: Teamwork - Ambition - Freedom!

I am a freshwater ecologist and I attended the MSc in Biology: Environment, Biodiversity and Ecosystems. My time at the VUB was very important for my formation. I learned a lot about every single process that characterises the research in general, and moreover I gained expertise in oral skills and presentation techniques.

I appreciated the multidisciplinary approach offered by the faculty: a vast choice of electives ensures a dynamic learning process of many different subjects, allowing you to build up a general knowledge and to link different scientific areas.

An applied approach to ecology ensures that you gain skills during the field work, and the excursions offered by the MSc were inspiring, intense and enjoyable. Furthermore, students from different MSc programmes join the excursions. This ensures real sharing of theoretical and practical knowledge.

I chose VUB as it has a large international community of students from all over the world. I especially liked the MSc. in Applied Computer Science due to the different modules presented in the curriculum. Studying here has been challenging but rewarding!

I decided on VUB because of its international environment, the quality of education and programme offer. The teaching staff were diverse and kind. I learned all about the latest developments in the field of media from practice to theory. I also had the opportunity to do an internship in one of the best media companies in Brussels. Through my courses I learned about all the stakeholders in the media sector. I fondly look back at my study time at the VUB.

I have been living close to the sea my entire life, and I always assumed that the sea would play a role in my work. After studying Nautical Sciences, I came across the MSc in Marine and Lacustrine Science and Management. This programme allows me to study the biological, physiological and chemical process in oceans, seas, estuaries, rivers and lakes. I also learn how they should be protected and managed. The programme combines the expertise of researchers at three universities in Belgium. Theoretical seminars are alternated with practical lab work or excursions to local ecosystems or institutions. I would recommend this programme to everyone with an admiration for the oceans and what lives in it.

I am from India and my first experience away from home, here in Brussels, has been very rewarding. VUB and this programme open a world of opportunities. The extensive lab work and field courses have helped me to enhance my skills and made my studies more interesting. I definitely recommend this challenging course to those passionate about protecting our world's oceans in the future, be it through policy or research.

I want to strongly emphasize that VUB has well-equipped laboratories and experienced professors. Also, its multicultural environment is very compatible with my ethics. My programme is a joint one between VUB and Gent University, which are highly-ranked universities in Europe. I like that our department always tries to make us aware of the next step in our career, finding a job or doing a PhD.

I have been worried about our planet and its biodiversity, and want to help protect it. I was searching for a study programme to get involved in these areas. Coming to Europe wasn’t easy, but I adapted quickly. VUB is one of the few universities offering Molecular Biology as a full MA programme, with professors of high scientific reputation. Studying here has given me a clear direction to what I want to be as a scientist.

The IUPWARE programme offered me a good opportunity to learn the field's different facets ranging from irrigation and drainage to
surface and groundwater hydrology to the use of hydrologic and hydraulic models, and applications of GIS and remote sensing.
This forms a solid foundation for anyone aspiring to pursue more advanced studies or a specialised career in the field of water resources
engineering. One of the strengths of the programme is its nice mix of theory and practice, giving students a more complete insight into
the topics addressed. Some of the exercises were conducted in groups, which provided good training for the real-world demands of working in a team. Aside from the technical aspects, IUPWARE also offers an excellent opportunity to meet a variety of people and learn different cultures, as the student population is very international. The group I graduated with included students from 10 different countries.

Thanks to the diversity of courses taught in the Computer Science programme I was able to find and refine my interests in this very broad field. The Artificial Intelligence specialisation offered a challenging and interesting path into a subject that is embedded in nearly every new technological advancement. The style of teaching pushed us to keep exploring beyond the course material, and allowed me to gain a deep familiarity with the latest research. There was an important emphasis on the foundations of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence, something that helps me in my career when keeping up with the latest academic work.

VUB is an inclusive academic research university, with scholars from all over the world. With the campus environment, geographical location, academic atmosphere, and inclusiveness in mind, I can say that the VUB is truly unique. The interuniversity Geography programme offers access to a wide range of academic resources and chances to meet excellent researchers, professors and friends!
The great learning atmosphere, well-established infrastructure, kind staff and approachable professors, all ensure that international students are supported during their studies.

I chose MACS because of its innovative curriculum, specifically designed for students without a computer science background. As an engineering student, I needed a programme that could help me build a solid foundation. What I appreciate the most is the practical aspect of the programme—every course includes projects that significantly improve our programming skills. The professors and teaching assistants are incredibly supportive, always willing to answer questions and provide guidance. This programme not only equips you with theoretical knowledge but also gives you hands-on experience, preparing you for various career paths in the tech industry.

The VUB isn’t just a place for academic development; it's a community where I’ve had the chance to make friends from different countries and cultures. What warms my heart is that the VUB cares a lot about students' physical and mental health. The university organises workshops and activities aimed at reducing stress and promoting a healthy balance between life and studies. Whether it’s through academic support, student events, or mental health resources, VUB ensures that every student feels valued and supported.

I am from Egypt and just graduated from the two-year Master in Computer Science, profile Artificial Intelligence (AI). I would definitely recommend this challenging programme to all graduate students who want to reach a high level of research. The diversity of courses also allowed me to grasp the essence of research in different disciplines. I had a great time in Brussels, learned so much and made friends from all over the world.

I chose VUB for its location in Brussels, proximity to influential institutions, strong academic reputation, diverse student body, language immersion opportunities, and preparation for the global business world. Studying International Business at VUB provides a global perspective, a range of career opportunities, and valuable networking in Brussels with international institutions and companies. Job fairs, case studies and company visits really add to the learning process.

This challenging and thought-provoking programme enhanced my knowledge of the maritime industry in all its aspects and inspired me to pursue a career in this field. I received the unconditional support of the teaching staff.
