Masters degrees in Biomaterials offers advanced training in the design and construction of materials devices or technologies which interact with living systems, such as medical materials.
Courses range from taught MSc degrees, to research-based MRes and MPhil programmes. Entry requirements normally include an undergraduate degree in an appropriate engineering or medical subject.
Biomaterials comprise of modified natural or synthetic materials, which are found in a range of medical applications. This includes processes such as tissue engineering and regenerative medicine for the repair, augmentation and replacement of body parts and other biological structures.
You will learn about the function and application of biomaterials, as well as their characteristics and structural, physical and mechanical properties. Alongside this, you will develop an awareness of the context in which healthcare engineering operates in terms of safety, the environment, and social and economic consequences.
Careers are highly varied, and may include consultancy for practices such as plastic surgery, roles in the design of synthetic and prosthetic limbs, or even healthcare engineering and manufacturing such as drug development.
