This Air Safety Management MSc programme is tailored towards those working who cannot attend regular university schedules.

With unexpected events affecting the aviation industry as well as increased competition and technological and regulatory changes, every organisation needs a core of up-to-date safety and risk managers ready to succeed into leadership positions.

The programme is designed to deliver individual success. First initiated by the Honourable Company of Airline Pilots (HCAP) to increase the career opportunities of aircrew, today the programme is recognised as a key resource within the aviation safety industry and as a benchmark for innovation.

As a student you will benefit from learning within modern lecture theatres (equipped with the latest interactive AV systems) and modern IT laboratories.

A dynamic virtual learning environment (Moodle) gives you access to online assessment and communication tools as you study and you can work with specialist School facilities including:

-Optical compressors and fuel injection systems.

This course gives you a recognised industry qualification, control of your own career and the ability to contribute to air safety management. The course is very flexible and you can study while you work.

At the end of the programme you will have improved your:
-Presentation/speaking skills - through regular opportunities within each module and the project.
-Report writing and analytical skills - through coursework and the project.
-Personal management skills - through the careful use of resources to complete assignments on time.

The successful MSc graduate will have:
-A good understanding of business analysis, crisis, human motivation, and management of the air safety industry.
-A sound understanding for the national and international regulatory and commercial business environment and the ability to prepare a sound business case.
-Knowledge of aspects of accident and incident investigation, human factors, safety risk management.
-A proven ability to research and write a substantial analytical report.

Modules

We explore air safety management from a broad perspective so you will be exposed to areas as diverse as human resources, regulation, and crisis management. The academic framework has been created by the industry for the industry. This means you learn from the former British Airways human resources director in one module, and the industry's crisis management expert in safety or the chief executive officer of a major maintenance facility in another.

The course is based on completing the Induction Workshop plus eight modules over one to five years, which are taught over three-day periods. Teaching takes place across global locations including London, Dubai and Frankfurt. Students also take on a project/dissertation in an air transport related subject, which is usually completed within six to twelve months. From developing new safety measures to social media marketing in the aviation world, students choose their own research focus and often use the project as a way into a new career.

Students who choose not to do the project, or are unable to complete the programme within the five years, receive a Postgraduate Certificate on successful completion of four modules, including two core modules, or a Postgraduate Diploma on successful completion of eight modules.

The Urban Environmental Management programme is an international and interactive programme providing a balanced curriculum of theory, tools and application. It aims to train students to guide the future along the path of sustainable urbanisation.

Programme summary

The world we live in is an increasingly urban one. Over the past century, a great population shift has occurred from rural to urban areas. Cities now hold half of the world’s population and it is estimated that three out of every five people will live in an urban environment by 2030. This development calls for measures to control the environmental impacts of urbanisation, such as growing traffic, increasing waste emissions, deteriorating air and water quality, and rising energy and resource consumption. Of particular concern are the speed and scale of urbanisation in the developing world as many Asian, African and Latin-American cities are incapable of providing adequate housing and basic urban services. Inadequate water supply, sanitation, waste collection and waste management systems are the cause of serious urban pollution and health hazards. Sustainable management of the urban environment has become one of the major challenges for the future.

The MSc Urban Environmental Management programme aims at equipping its students with the outlook, concepts and tools to manage the urban environment. The programme unites four essential perspectives on the urban environment: environmental quality and health, environmental infrastructure and technology, spatial planning, and governance. Besides integrated theories and views from several disciplines, urban environmental management requires technical and managerial competencies and skills for its implementation. The Road Management and Engineering programme is designed to equip participants with the skills and knowledge of management procedures for the planning, appraisal, design, construction and maintenance of road networks.

The programme is relevant to conditions found in both developed and developing countries and are suitable for road engineers and civil engineering graduates who want to pursue a career in road management.

This programme in its current form is a natural progression from our previous programmes in highway engineering, management and traffic engineering that have gained an international reputation over the past 25 years. Its purpose is to provide advanced training for engineers aspiring to higher or middle-management positions in either private or public sector road engineering organisations. The course attracts participants from all over the world including practicing engineers who wish to gain knowledge of the state of the art in road management or change career paths as well as recent graduates who want to pursue a career in road management.

The taught part of the programme consists of 6 individually assessed modules of 20 credits each, each run over two intensive weeks. Engineering oriented modules cover the principles of road design, safety, materials, and the structural design of road pavements. Management focused modules complement the range of subjects taught in the engineering oriented modules and include the environment, sustainable transport, road asset management, road financing and economics.

The master program addresses candidates graduated by an bachelor degree due to the following qualifications:

Fluency in English is required. Students whose native language is not English must demonstrate English proficiency with the TOEFL exam (minimum of 220 points computer-based or 560 paper-based) or an equivalent test like the IELTS (at least 6,0). Most modern engineering projects are multidisciplinary in nature and require a broad range of skills, proficiencies and perspectives to accomplish the task. The Master of Advanced Mechanical Engineering takes a systems approach to the design, monitoring and performance of complex mechanical engineering systems in the fields of renewable energy, aerospace, buildings, transportation, and biomedical devices. The systems approach also permeates the design of the course: four discipline-based core units are vertically integrated so that common problems are examined from different perspectives, culminating in a sustainable systems unit.

In our modern world, we are surrounded by systems and devices that have unseen computer software and hardware, such as digital televisions, MP3 players, smartphones and traffic lights. It takes a special type of person (typically working in a multidisciplinary team) to conceive, design and implement, and deploy these so-called embedded systems. This course is designed to set you ahead in the vibrant jobs market for consumer electronics, industrial equipment and the automotive industry.

Key features
-This course is accredited by BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT.
-Practical-based teaching will provide you the opportunity to put your hands on industry and/or research-standard software/hardware such as LabView, Compact Rio, Microchip's dsPIC DSC / MPLAB, Matlab.
-The course is taught by academics with expertise in computer science, electrical, mechanical and automotive engineering and by industrial visiting lecturers based in industry.
-You will have the opportunity to work on your project dissertation in one of our industrial contacts or alongside our research teams with internationally recognised expertise in digital image processing, computer vision, robotics, control systems, aerospace, medical telematics, wireless networks and multimedia communications.

What will you study?

The Embedded Systems MSc has been designed to give you a good background on digital signal processing (DSP), digital signal processors (eg the kind used in set top boxes, image processing, etc.), control systems and micro controllers. You can then choose a number of options to tailor your education mixing computing and engineering subjects. If you are vocationally inclined toward management, we also offer a version of the course that includes management modules.

The Embedded Systems course can be combined with Management Studies enabling you to develop business and management skills so you can work effectively with business managers to develop innovative and imaginative ways to exploit embedded systems for business advantage. This is a key skill for employability, particularly as organisations in the public, private and voluntary sectors grapple with austerity.

Assessment

Coursework and/or exams, research project/dissertation.

Work placement scheme

Kingston University has set up a scheme that allows postgraduate students in the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Computing to include a work placement element in their course starting from September 2017. The placement scheme is available for both international and home/EU students.

-The work placement, up to 12 months; is optional.
-The work placement takes place after postgraduate students have successfully completed the taught portion of their degree.
-The responsibility for finding the placement is with the student. We cannot guarantee the placement, just the opportunity to undertake it.
-As the work placement is an assessed part of the course for international students, this is covered by a student's tier 4 visa.

The Intelligent transport system master's programme focuses on the integration of telecommunications and information technology into vehicles and physical road infrastructure in order to achieve increased efficiency, safety and mobility while decreasing environmental impact.

The programme gives students the engineering and managerial skills required for the design, planning, analysis and management of transport systems. The focus lies on road transportation systems and public transport and the understanding of traffic congestion, air pollution and road accident prevention.

The ITS programme gives students the skills to understand and control transport systems through the use of optimisation and simulation tools and application of telecommunications and geographical information systems. Study areas also include traffic modelling and traffic simulation, as well as road safety issues and management skills. To prepare the students for management positions, language and oral and written communication courses are integrated in the programme.

During the course of the programme students will be able to specialise in areas such as traffic safety management, mobile and wireless telecommunications or mathematical modelling of traffic systems. The programme ends with a six month long degree project.

ITS students at Linköping University will be at the frontline of Swedish ITS research as Linköping University is the coordinating university of the Swedish National Postgraduate School of ITS. The university is also a member of ITS-EduNet, the network for Training and Education on Intelligent Transport Systems.

The Intelligent transport systems master's programme is designed to prepare students for a career as a traffic engineer or traffic planner in public or private organisations, or as a developer of products and services related to the transport sector. Students are also well prepared for a research career or for continuing their studies towards a PhD degree.
