Content

MA Fashion Journalism is unique in its merging of cultural theory with fashion journalism. It is a multidisciplinary framework for independent study that leads to an original body of written and/or visual work. You can choose to position your aspirations and your work on a spectrum from media journalism to theoretical study, for example: a dissertation on the presentation of fashion on television; a book surveying the fashion industry in Canada; a new concept for a fashion magazine; a cultural analysis of the current position of masculinity in society.

The course aims to develop highly articulate and aware fashion commentators who have sound research ability and strong written and visual communication skills. Cultural theory and journalism strands run in parallel through the first stage of the course. Three of the four pathway units are focused on the practice of journalism, a key feature being visiting speakers from industry.

The Postgraduate Certificate Fashion: Fashion and Lifestyle Journalism course aims to give students a working knowledge of fashion and lifestyle media, as well as a professional practical foundation in writing skills developing vocational skills and analytical thinking.

The course is designed for graduates and those with appropriate industry experience who wish to develop their career prospects in the highly competitive fashion industry. It is also a suitable preparation for higher level postgraduate study. This dynamic course cultivates both a practical and theoretical understanding of fashion and lifestyle journalism in the UK.

With a close eye on changing trends in contemporary lifestyle media, emphasis is placed on developing an analytical understanding of the commercial marketplace as well as the rigours of practical journalism. You will develop an enhanced commercial awareness, enabling you to produce editorial material for this specialist area.

The programme is supported by a series of guest speakers from the fashion and lifestyle media industry, from publications including Elle, The Guardian, W, Net a porter, i-D, Another, Harper’s Bazaar, 10 Magazine and Telegraph Weekend magazine. The Postgraduate Certificate Fashion: Fashion and Lifestyle Journalism course is based at the university’s John Prince’s Street and High Holborn sites, in the heart of the city.

Journalism is an intensive course that trains, write and research like a journalist. It covers media ethics and law, reporting and public affairs, shorthand, sub-editing and production. In the final stage of the course you can produce your own newspaper or series of in-depth articles, with support from our professional journalists.

Compared to an undergraduate course, you will find that this Masters requires a higher level of independent working. The course aims to stretch your creativity and maximise your sense of personal fulfilment.

In Stage 1 and Stage 2, you will have approx 22/23hrs teaching per week. This is arranged so that you have Friday off each week. The course is taught by respected academics and journalism professionals through a combination of newsroom workshops, seminars and tutorials. You will work on projects both on your own and with others, developing skills in communication and teamwork.

We encourage you to publish your work. The department has strong relationships with local and national media including Johnston Press, NCJ Media and Room 501 Publishing.

Facilities & location

The facilities at the David Puttnam Media Centre help you gain skills in areas such as writing, page design, online research, managing production, IT, and time management and presentation skills.

The mediaHUB
Throughout your time in Sunderland you will have an outlet for your creative talents in the mediaHUB, a bustling multimedia newsroom on the top floor of our David Puttnam Media Centre that will give you a real taste of life as a working journalist. The mediaHUB runs websites covering sport, news, entertainments and fashion, provides the content for news bulletins on our award-winning Spark Radio and is responsible for writing and editing Spark magazine.

Journalism/PR suites
We have four journalism suites, each with 18 Apple Mac workstations with design applications and video editing. There’s an additional open access project completion suite with 20 more workstations and colour laser printing.

Broadcast Journalism Newsroom
The Broadcast Journalism Newsroom has 20 workstations plus a Sky feed with two 40” plasma screens. Each workstation has industry-standard software including Newscutter, Burli and ENPS.

Technical support
The Journalism Newsroom has another 20 Mac workstations and offers drop-in sessions run by a rota of working journalists who can advise on projects, assignments and your personal portfolio. These sessions are available every day of the week during term time. In addition, technicians are available to help you use all the software and equipment.

Radio studios
We have six radio studios including a transmission suite for 107 Spark FM, our student-run community radio station and a city centre hub.

TV studios
We have two broadcast-quality TV studios complete with green room and changing facilities. Equipment includes four Steadicam rigs plus dolly, track and mini crane. We have over 40 full HD tapeless field camera systems.

Other media facilities
We have a live Sky feed and off-air recording facility, including DVD and Blu-ray recording, plus extensive footage archive/library. There is also a 203-seat cinema with full HD projection, 7.1 surround sound facility and the capability to play 3D feature films.

University Library Services
We’ve got a wide range of books, journals and e-books on relevant topics, with many more available through the inter-library loan service. Some useful resources for your studies include:
-Lexis, which provides full-text newspaper articles as well as access to legal information
-JSTOR (short for ‘Journal Storage’), which provides access to important journals across the humanities, social sciences and sciences
-Archival Sound Recordings with over 12,000 hours of recordings

Employment & careers

Postgraduates are highly employable and, on average, earn more than individuals whose highest qualification is an undergraduate degree. On completing this course you will be equipped for roles throughout the PR and communications industries.

Recent Sunderland graduates are now working in PR consultancies as well as in the PR departments of organisations such as the Environment Agency, Tyne and Wear Sports and AA Press Office.

Introduction

Over recent decades the fashion and textile industries has been making changes; responding to enviromental and social needs; publishing corporate social reports and working with industry bodies and NGOs. Yet the Rana Plaza disaster in Dhaka, Bangladesh in 2013 was tragedy for the workers, their families, the country and the industries, and an imperative for new thinking, new practice, and fresh ethics. It is a horrific milestone for fashion manufacture, communication, consumer awareness and industry responsibilities. The industries are now reaching out to governments, NGOs, charities, unions and radical thinkers for advice and support. They are accountable for their current and future ethics. Without doubt it is time for change in which education is a crucial contributor to the new solutions, and alternative futures for the industries.

The new MSc Ethics in Fashion (See http://www.postgraduate.hw.ac.uk/prog/msc-ethics-in-fashion/ ) is a research led, taught programme, focussed on analysing and understanding the industry, whilst mapping the changes in practice, monitoring the voices and diversity of stakeholders in the supply-chain. The programme offers a chance for ethically aware graduates and established professionals to refresh and extend their knowledge and skillset. An escalating need for an Ethics in Fashion programme has been identified, and Heriot-Watt University is in a unique position with subject specific research faculty, global industry links, outstanding fashion and textiles facilities and an enviable pastoral location, with strong transport connections.

Our students

The taught programme has been created for those wanting to work, or already working in the fashion and textiles industries, in design, sourcing management, buying, journalism and corporate affairs. The qualification provides a set of fresh perspectives and insights for an existing first degree qualification, or relevant experience in any of the above areas or similar for those wanting to be part of the dynamic changing industries.

Industry links

The School of Textiles and Design, and the research staff have strong global industry and NGO links in design, corporate social responsibility reporting and corporate affairs, social enterprise. In addition teaching staff are Fellows of the Fellowship of 500, in the Ethical Fashion Forum. There are both courses, and research opportunities to work with local and international industry.

The programme has been designed to utilise selected core postgraduate courses offered within the School and introducing courses specific to Ethics in Fashion, thus encouraging inter-disciplinary participation and discourse, and membership of the a growing research community.

Objectives

- Analyse the ethics in supply-chain practice
- Speculate on, and develop, effective methods of communicating ethics
- Identify and map outcomes and consequences of unethical and ethical practice
- Speculate and apply new criteria within the supply-chain
- Analyse the motivations and roles of consumers in the ethics discourse and practice
- Identify best practice models across the traditional fashion and textiles industries, social enterprise and non-governmental organisations (NGOs)
- Research independently the role of ethics in fashion practice and theory

Assessment

Students are assessed through a combination of individual and group written course work, and projects and the Masters dissertation. Emphasis is placed on rigorous academic standards as well as acquiring and developing a range of transferable industry skills and individual development. Assessment exercises can therefore include making effective visual and oral presentations, writing reports and as well as team and group work.

Applications are made by submitting a completed application form to the Postgraduate Office at the Edinburgh Campus. Additionally, before our final decision can be given, applicants will be asked to supply documentation to provide proof of academic background and suitability as a candidate:

Introduction

With its three distinctive but interconnected pathways, this course is for dynamic students looking to thrive within the fashion communications industry at the highest level. The Fashion Journalism pathway focuses on writing, editing and digital media. Fashion Communication & Promotion is for innovative image-makers; and Fashion Critical Studies offers an academic approach to the analysis of Fashion.

Content

The MAFC course consists of three specific pathways. While each pathway has a distinct approach to Fashion Communication, cross pathway projects will connect subject specialists into vibrant groups creating challenging and industry relevant experiences.

There are key points in the year when MAFC students will interact with MA Fashion Design students and experience Fashion Communication in a live context. In January and February the build up to the MA Fashion Show at London Fashion Week will provide opportunities to participate in the production and organisation of a fashion show. In May MAFC students can work with BA Fashion students as they present their degree fashion show.

The MAFC course is framed in the highly creative Fashion Programme at Central Saint Martins, but also within an Art School philosophy where other creative disciplines such as Graphic Communication, Architecture, Textiles, Jewellery, Product Design and Fine Art offer debates, collaborations and new approaches to the subject.

The extensive global CSM networks offer contemporary fashion links, creative networks and live industry projects. Course Structure

The course is structured in three parts. Part A. Foundations for advanced journalism studies, Part B. Core Master's study and Part C. Advanced expertise. All students complete Part B. Depending upon prior qualifications, you may receive credit for Part A or Part C or a combination of the two.

PART A. Foundations for advanced journalism studies
These studies will introduce you to journalism studies at advanced undergraduate or graduate level. They are intended for students whose previous qualification is not in a cognate field.

PART B. Core Master's study
These studies draw on best practices within the broad realm of journalism studies. Through a combination of academic and practice-based work, students gain a solid foundation in all production technologies – print, video, radio and online – in metropolitan, regional and international contexts.

PART C. Advanced expertise
The focus of these studies is professional or scholarly work that can contribute to a portfolio of professional development. You have two options.

The first option is a program of coursework study where you select the units to suit your own interests. This option includes the opportunity to undertake an internship in the field.

The second option is a 24 point research thesis. Students wishing to use this Masters course as a pathway to a higher degree by research should take this second option.

Students admitted to the course, who have a recognised honours degree in a cognate discipline including humanities or social sciences, will receive credit for Part C, however, should they wish to complete a 24 point research project as part of the course they should consult with the course coordinator.

Partner with another course

Double degree courses allow you to study towards two different degrees at the same time, and graduate with two separate qualifications. And because a required subject in one course can count as an elective in the other, our double degrees take up to two years less than if you studied for the two degrees separately.

Whether you are a recent graduate or a professional in fashion and related industries, such as marketing, journalism, photography, film and pattern cutting, Fashion Innovation and Realisation MA allows you to advance your current skills and expertise and engage in an advanced level of fashion-related academic study.

This flexible, modular programme will allow you to develop your skills, experience and expertise through experimental, innovative practice and fashion theory. The programme then switches to ‘realisation’ modules, achieved through collaborative and interdisciplinary practice, and a studio culture supported by lectures, seminars and visiting lecturers. Your studies will culminate in the development and presentation of a final major project where you will present the outcomes of your individual learning plan.

Fashion is a mature subject within the Liverpool School of Art and Design and you will have access to the latest digital equipment as well as traditional fashion techniques that are seeing a re-emergence in the fashion sector. The facilities available in our John Lennon Art and Design Building will provide all the equipment you need to develop, create and photograph work.

Magazine journalism skills are acquired through a series of lectures, workshops, practical exercises and feedback sessions of increasing complexity and realism - from 'paper exercises' in the early days to complex features that report on real events. These sessions are supplemented by seminars, group discussions and guests from the magazine industry.

Basic writing, reporting and technical skills for both print and digital are taught in the first semester against a background of Media law and journalism Ethics. Shorthand is also available as an option.

The second semester offers more creative practice where you will plan, create and launch a brand new magazine brand across print and digital platforms, producing three issues to a fortnightly deadline.

During the Easter break you will test your skills against the real world in a work placement (or placements) of a minimum two weeks' duration.

The Major Project core module provides you with the opportunity to undertake:

• a Feature Project in which you will employ investigative journalism techniques and research skills acquired during the taught element of the course to explore a topic in depth by writing long-form feature articles, or

• an Enterprise Project in which you will develop the editorial and business plan for an innovative media product in print or purely digital/online.

You will also create a brand new magazine in groups. Starting from scratch you will:

Teaching

You will be taught through a variety of practical workshops, seminars and lectures as well as production days that replicate an industry environment.

You will be required to find and research stories in and around the local area, interviewing sources via a mix of methods and producing original multimedia content and photography.

Assessment

You will be assessed through a wide range of formative and summative assessments throughout the course. These range from practical classroom activities, varied journalistic articles and packages, class tests and examinations.

Fashion is as much about stories, words and images as it is about products, garments and accessories. It has become a global cultural and social phenomenon, and advertising, photography, magazines and events are a main part of this shift. The recent changes in digital communication tools and social media have led to words and images becoming even more pivotal to it, yet have also made this system increasingly complex and hard to control.

Our Global Fashion Media MBA was specifically designed to address these changes. It is mainly aimed at students or young professionals from a wide range of backgrounds who are interested in careers related to visual representations and communications, journalism, advertising, photographic styling, artistic direction, e-commerce, public relations, photography, and even digital technologies and social media management, either in the fashion world or in the creative industries at large.

This course has 3 main objectives :
Enriching our students’ fashion, visual and media culture with modules such as « Fashion Photography History » that puts in perspective the historical changes in visual representations of fashion and makes the connection with other creative fields, or « Fashion 2.0 » that focuses on the latest developments in digital communication.

Helping our students understand the strategic challenges faced by fashion companies and brands and the role of communication tools in it. Modules such as “International Marketing Communication”, “Branding” or “Sensorial Marketing” articulate communication tools with the global management of companies that have creative activities at the heart of their business.

Allowing students to use the skills they have acquired during the numerous workshops run by professionals that we offer throughout the year. Examples of this include maintaining a blog dedicated to fashion and culture throughout the programme and producing a fashion magazine in full, from feature and article writing to photo shooting and artistic direction.

This program ends with what we call the Capstone Project, an individual research and creative project. When working on the Capstone, each student is encouraged to appropriate specific topics of the MBA Global Fashion Media according to his or her own professional projects and areas of interest.

Moving from the Paris to the Shanghai campuses allows students not only to compare the sectorial differences between mature and emerging markets, but also to better understand the impact local cultures can have on communication and image production.

In both cities, students have the opportunity to attend a wide range of events, from meeting with professionals, attending fashion shows, exhibitions and professional fairs to taking company tours, thus allowing them to build their own professional network. The Career and Alumni Centre is also there to offer guidance to IFA Paris students and alumni, and brings together a large network of graduates and alumni from over 50 different nationalities.

All our programs are articulated around the ECTS framework as defined by the Bologne convention. Characterised by a multi-disciplinary, holistic ethos, MA Fashion Media Production aims to stimulate and cultivate fashion communicators of the twenty first century. Reflecting a shift in the fashion industries demands for multi-skilled creatives, this course bridges a gap between primary disciplines such as journalism and photography as well as encompassing digital and new media practices to encourage reflective practice, fresh responses and innovative solutions within Fashion Media Production.

As future fashion podcasters, film-makers, web-site editors or creators, fashion forecasters, broadcasters, stylists or sound artists, you will work with a repertoire of communicative and interpretive tools including text, image, sound, film and digital technology to question industry conventions, processes and practices.

MA Fashion Media Production will be an industry facing course and aims to incorporate a range of professional practitioners within its units. You will be encouraged to combine your course with industry placements appropriate to your study.

The practical aspect of the course will culminate in an optional accredited internship and mandatory professional research project, including live PR work and journalism and, at its end, a critical reflection which will require students to relate their work to wider thinking about these industries.

What will you study?

You will be taught through a combination of lectures and seminars and practical workshops focusing on hands-on activities, such as writing, interviewing, subediting, magazine production, blogging, and writing and uploading copy for the web. In collaboration with other students, you will produce a magazine (print and online), and will undertake at least one placement on a published title.

You will also have the opportunity to study feature writing, design and production, journalism practices and the business of magazines. Finally, you will carry out a 12–15,000-word dissertation or a related practical project.
