What you will study on the MSc Strategic Marketing?
The course starts by embedding the fundamentals of the subject in the learning through core modules covering key areas such as brand management, leadership from a marketing perspective and planning for a global market place. From here you will select four optional modules in areas in which you would like to specialise or across the spectrum to give a broad knowledge base.

These modules consists of insights based topics such as consumer psychology and customer analysis, strategy based subjects such as marketing communications and product management, and implementation in areas such as digital marketing and experiential marketing. The course ends with a dissertation, allowing you to explore in depth a strategic marketing topic of your choice.

For small groups – these are structured, student-led sessions in which you might explore ideas in discussion, carry out practical tasks, or practice your research skills. In seminars, reading module materials, note taking and participating in discussion are essential. This course focuses on events marketing, defined as the use of events for marketing purposes. In a competitive marketing environment, organisations are now marketing through events, whereby events are used as an integral part of the marketing communications mix. The event is not the end itself, but a means to achieve a product’s or brand’s marketing objectives. Events marketing is, thus, part of the experiential marketing domain, defined as the strategy of achieving marketing objectives through personal experiences which allow customers to engage and interact with brands, products, and services.

You'll learn about the most recent developments in a range of critical areas of events marketing such as sponsorship/branding, new media campaigns (guerrilla and ambush), PR stunts and virtual events. All aspects of marketing communications are discussed to enable you to prepare an integrated events marketing communications plan. This course enables entry onto the MSc Marketing Management if you did not gain a first or second class honours at degree level (or equivalent). It will add to your existing skills and knowledge providing you with enhanced understanding and abilities which will prepare you for Masters courses.

The MSc Marketing Management course is aimed at graduates and practitioners who desire to enhance their knowledge and understanding of a range of current marketing thinking and techniques, to support and enhance careers within the profession. In the context of a highly dynamic environment where a complexity of factors, particularly technology and innovation, creates significant impact on marketing strategies, management, systems and functions, the programme seeks to develop key marketing skills which will support both entrepreneurial self-development and employment, and also meet the requirements of managers operating at a senior level. In order to provide students with maximum opportunity, where appropriate live case studies will form part or all of the assessment process, involving interaction with local business.

The MSc Marketing Management course is aimed at graduates and practitioners who desire to enhance their knowledge and understanding of a range of current marketing thinking and techniques, to support and enhance careers within the profession. In the context of a highly dynamic environment where a complexity of factors, particularly technology and innovation, creates significant impact on marketing strategies, management, systems and functions, the programme seeks to develop key marketing skills which will support both entrepreneurial self-development and employment, and also meet the requirements of managers operating at a senior level. In order to provide students with maximum opportunity, where appropriate live case studies will form part or all of the assessment process, involving interaction with local business.

By the end of the programme students will have acquired high-level knowledge and understanding of marketing concepts and principles, theoretical and business tools and frameworks and applied analysis. The MSc Marketing Management syllabus covers both strategic and operational perspectives and places emphasis upon the practical use of the knowledge gained via the employment of both live and simulated case material.

Social activities

There is a wide range of university social activities and clubs for students. The Marketing department organises its own events in addition to the programme run by the International office of the University. These include:famous student ceilidh in October with Scottish country dancing, the Marketing Works Grand Finale and Gala Dinner in June, sporting competitions and events; students also sometimes organise an end of programme celebration themselves.

Learning & teaching

A comprehensive support package is provided to enhance students' learning and to ensure maximum student benefit during their period of study. This includes, but is not limited to:

Students will learn to analyze trends in technology, derive insights from data, design content management strategies, and execute plans across paid, owned and earned media. Students will also learn how to develop and evaluate digital marketing strategies to maximize customer engagement and create meaningful interactions in support of business growth.

Included are experiential learning opportunities with a marketer, a retailer or an agency serving clients, allowing students to improve their leadership, entrepreneurial, organizational, project management and teamwork skills, while effectively applying learning in a real-world environment. As part of the course work, students are eligible to earn industry certifications such as Google AdWords, Google Analytics and Facebook Blueprint. Specialist modules cover buyer behaviours, brand dynamics and relationship marketing in a global context. You’ll develop your research skills through a master’s dissertation or an investigative consultancy project.

Different specialist modules are available with our MSc Business with Management with Marketing, which is a two-year course, although commonality exists in terms of the Marketing input.

There is no requirement to have studied business or marketing management at undergraduate level.

The course is covered by the prestigious AACSB accreditation for Newcastle Business School, which was ‘Business School of the Year’ at The Times Higher Education Awards 2015.

Teaching And Assessment

Your tutors will use a variety of teaching methods including lectures, seminars and workshops. As this is a master’s course there is a major element of independent learning and self-motivated reflection.

Teaching is backed up by a well-designed support system that helps ensure a successful learning journey. We make sure that extensive feedback, from both tutors and peers, is built into the course.

Our assessment strategy is based on our understanding that everyone has different needs, strengths and enthusiasms. Assessment is based on course work and our methods will include essays, reports, group work, presentations, and the master’s dissertation or consultancy project.

Learning Environment

Our use of lecture capture software will help you revise challenging material.

There will be plenty of opportunities to put your learning into practice. The Student Engagement Centre promotes all types of experiential learning including volunteering, internships and placements. The Business Clinic enables our students to participate in a ‘consultancy firm’ to provide advice for our region’s businesses.

Research-Rich Learning

As a master’s student you’ll develop your research skills to a new and higher level. Your research supervisor will help you submit a proposal for your master’s dissertation or consultancy project and then discuss its development through to completion in the final semester.

If you decide on a master’s consultancy project, rather than a dissertation, you’ll still undertake primary and desk research. Through your reading, reflection and research, you’ll be expected to show a deep understanding of the issues that are involved in the client brief.

Throughout your course you’ll be an active participant in the on-going research agenda that’s at the heart of Newcastle Business School. With conferences and research events regularly taking place, and with staff discussing their own research as it relates to the topics you’ll study, there’s a strong emphasis on engaging in up-to-date enquiry-based learning.

Give Your Career An Edge

The course includes two modules that are focused on developing global management competencies. Topics during these modules include emotional intelligence, cultural awareness and the ability to work in diverse groups and teams, as well as project management and decision making.

A further module, ‘Academic and Professional Development’, has a specific focus on self-development. It includes formal sessions with our Careers and Employment Service which offers a range of workshops, one-to-one advice, and networking opportunities.

To further enhance your employability, we offer the opportunity to undertake a master’s consultancy project as an alternative to the traditional dissertation. You’ll work in a small group, typically no more than five people, and tackle a live project from a host organisation under the mentorship of a member of our academic team. The project can be an excellent vehicle for you to relate theory to practice while developing key employability skills.

Your Future

Our graduates typically go into professional and graduate management positions and, by the end of the course, you’ll be well-equipped to follow them. Thanks to the specialist modules – Analysing Buyer Behaviour and Brand Dynamics, Relationship Marketing in a Global Context, and the dissertation/consultancy project – you’ll have a particular edge in roles related to marketing.

If you decide to start up your own business, it’s good to know that the combined turnover of our graduates’ start-up companies is higher than that of any other UK university.

The course could also lead you to a postgraduate research degree such as an MPhil, PhD and Professional Doctorate.

Whatever you decide to do, you will have the transferable skills that employers expect from a master’s graduate from Northumbria University. These include the ability to tackle complex issues through conceptualisation and undertaking research, the ability to contribute to new processes and knowledge, and the ability to formulate balanced judgements when considering incomplete or ambiguous data.
