Overview

The creative industries are one of the fastest growing employment sectors in the UK. Our MA Cultural and Creative Industries programme reflects contemporary knowledge, theory, practice and research at the forefront of academic and professional study in the creative industries, aiming to produce graduates who have the skills and competencies needed to meet the dynamic challenges of this sector. 

Supported by leading-edge research and professional practice in this area, the programme offers a balance of theory and professional study. We will provide you with a range of conceptual and professional knowledge that will enable you to identify emerging areas of opportunity within the creative industries. You will become a flexible and reflexive practitioner with the skills and knowledge to adapt to the changing demands of the creative workplace.

You will develop your conceptual understanding of key theories as well as awareness of contemporary issues and debates within the cultural and creative industries, and discuss the challenges facing professionals and policy-makers. You will explore the effect different political, economic, social and cultural contexts have on the way in which these industries operate, and you will develop your skills and critical understanding of work in cultural and creative organisations in a wide variety of contexts so that you can apply critical thinking to professional scenarios to further your effectiveness in your chosen career.

You will also learn about the practice and theory of digital creativity and the skills and knowledge needed to manage digital and social media in a creative context as well as exploring the innovative ways in which creative practitioners are connecting with their audiences, embracing digital, immersive and mixed media methods.  

As well as gaining valuable practical and professional skills and industry work experience, you will undertake an individual piece of research. This will act both as a critique of the current state of your chosen field of interest and as a vehicle for the development of your own professional skills appropriate to your future career ambitions.

A key part of the MA Cultural and Creative Industries and what makes this programme stand out, is its industry facing nature, including a professional placement module. We engage directly with external partners from the cultural and creative industries and make use of our home in the heart of Cardiff. You will benefit from strong links with Creative Cardiff. We involve creative industries businesses, organisations and practitioners at the forefront of the field in workshops, field visits and as guest lecturers throughout the programme.

Learning and assessment

Most modules are delivered through a mix of workshops, lectures and seminars or tutorials which complement the practical and academic elements of the programme. To encourage collaborative learning, you will be taught in organised lecture and seminar/workshop sessions and there are ample opportunities for one-to-one tutorial and specialist support throughout the programme, both from academic staff and from industry specialists.

In lectures, you will be given an overview of a particular aspect of the module content. You will have opportunities to ask questions and be reflective in these sessions. Workshops and seminars provide you with the opportunity to practice techniques, discuss ideas, apply concepts and consolidate your understanding of the lecture topic.

In addition to timetabled classes, we invite creative industries businesses, organisations and practitioners to take part throughout the programme as guest speakers, to provide contextual, first-hand knowledge of current debates and trends and enabling you to relate the knowledge provided in class sessions to real-world examples.

In order to successfully complete the programme, you will be required to work during and outside formal teaching sessions, and to make good use of the facilities provided.

We recognise that the majority of our students undertake postgraduate qualifications to improve their prospects in the job market. Our MA Cultural and Creative Industries will give you the opportunity to follow a wide variety of careers in any number of cultural, creative or associated sectors. The Master of Cultural and Creative Industries is a program built on the recognition that the cultural sector is one of the most exciting and innovative ones in the contemporary world. Music, film, new media, computer games, publishing, music, the visual and performing arts, tourism, crafts, design and fashion all offer dynamic careers now and in the future. Policymakers at city, national and international levels understand that the benefits of the cultural sector go beyond monetary value and are essential for social well-being. Key to the future of developed and developing countries, this interdisciplinary program provides you with a critical overview of a rapidly growing sector and its many employment opportunities.

The Master of Cultural and Creative Industries offers an individual road map to dynamic careers in the independent arts and creative/cultural industries; working in cultural policy, governance and community development; and/or seeking to place cultural economies in an historical context, and its implications for contemporary practice.

The course offers a research or internship project component, which provides the opportunity to work in interdisciplinary contexts to combine theory and practice in responding to local and global issues at individual, community, corporate and government levels. For instance, you may participate in the unit Shanghai City Lab, a unique program aimed at immersing students in the cultural economy of Asia's new global metropolis.

As a student in the Master of Cultural and Creative Industries, you will be taught by academic staff who are widely regarded as leading experts in their respective fields. Further, you will attend regular presentations from a range of policymakers, industry practitioners, cultural activists, urban planners and community groups. These include Renew Newcastle and Renew Australia; Melbourne cultural policy representatives; live music campaigners; cultural consultants working with indigenous groups; and creative industry practitioners and advisors.

Course structure

The course is structured in three parts. Part A. Foundations for advanced cultural  and creative industries studies, Part B. Core master's study and Part C. Advanced expertise. All students complete Part B. Depending upon prior qualifications, you may receive credit for Part A or Part C or a combination of the two.

Note that if you are eligible for credit for prior studies you may elect not to receive the credit.

Part A. Foundations for advanced cultural and creative industries studies (24 points)

These studies will introduce you to cultural and creative industries studies at advanced undergraduate or graduate level. They are intended for students whose previous qualification is not in a cognate field.

Part B. Core master's study (48 points)

These studies draw on best practices within the broad field of cultural and creative industries studies practice and research to further your understanding of the complex ecosystem in which cultural and economic goals and dynamics combine in ways that transgress traditional disciplinary and policy boundaries.

Part C. Advanced expertise (24 points)

The focus of these studies is professional or scholarly work that can contribute to a portfolio of professional development. You have two options:

  • a program of coursework study where you select the units to suit your own interests. This option includes the opportunity to undertake an internship in the field.
  • a 24 point research thesis. Students wishing to use this master's course as a pathway to a higher degree by research  should take this second option.

Students admitted to the course, who have a recognised honours degree in a cognate discipline including humanities or social sciences, will receive credit for Part C, however, should they wish to complete a 24 point research project as part of the course they should consult with the course coordinator.

The MA Creative and Cultural Industries Management course offers a practical and vocational approach to working in this rapidly developing sector. The ability to spot opportunities and to be entrepreneurial are skills that the course seeks to nurture and develop at each level, to best equip you to enter the professional world of work – whether it be creating your own cultural enterprise or working with existing ones.

The MA Creative and Cultural Industries Management course, which is part of our Visual and Material Culture research cluster, blends management theory with arts, culture, heritage, visual culture, humanities, sociology, geography and policy studies.

Cultural & Creative Industries is a unique interdisciplinary course that draws on cultural theories, cultural history, digital culture, management, geography, cultural policy, gender and fashion. This exciting and contemporary course also makes use of our links with and proximity to Tate Modern, Southbank Centre and the British Film Institute. 

If you are seeking a career in the arts or creative industries, or if you are a professional looking to enhance your existing knowledge and career prospects, then this course is ideally suited for you. You can also use the training and skills we will give you to prepare for doctoral research in culture, media and creative industries. However, you should bear in mind that this is not a traditional media, communications or journalism studies course. If you want to follow a career in these areas, this course will only be relevant in so far as your interests relate specifically to the cultural and creative industries, such as performing and visual arts, cultural heritage, film, games and music.

Course purpose

Provides a critical understanding of the cultural and creative industries for graduates seeking a career in the arts or creative industries or for professionals wishing to enhance their existing knowledge and career prospects. Can also prepare students for doctoral research in the culture, media and creative industries. 

Whilst the course doesn't specifically cover media, communications or journalism studies it could be relevant in so far as your interests relate specifically to the cultural and creative industries (e.g. performing and visual arts, cultural heritage, film and music).

 Course format and assessment

Teaching

If you are a full-time student, we will provide 140 hours of teaching through lectures and seminars, and we will expect you to undertake 1,674 hours of independent study.

If you are a part-time student, we will provide 90 hours of teaching through lectures and seminars in your first year, and 50 hours in your second year. We will expect you to undertake 720 hours of independent study in your first year, and 954 hours in your second.

Assessment

We assess our modules through a combination of essays and coursework. Your dissertation will account for a third of your final grade.

The MA in Creative and Cultural Entrepreneurship should be attractive if you either wish to develop a business arising from an existing creative practice or to understand how to create the infrastructure and environment for new creative businesses.

This programme offers a number of pathways:

It's an ideal Masters if you want to develop a business in one of these fields, or in new areas of the creative industries. All students bring a business idea to the programme to use as a live case study. 

The Masters is taught in partnership by a number of departments within Goldsmiths and with key individuals and organisations in the creative and cultural industries sector.

Our collective approach is to integrate entrepreneurship within the development of creative practices and to take a ‘creative’ approach to the development of new businesses and the infrastructure that supports them.

This programme is designed to allow you to continue to innovate, but also to provide the requisite business/entrepreneurial skills and attributes to commercialise your creative and cultural practices and/or knowledge.

You’ll be able to build on a historical and theoretical understanding of cultural and creative industries and the development of a cultural economy to create your own creative initiatives, which might be research-based, policy-based, practice-based, or a combination of any or all of these. Through the programme you will develop techniques to move your creative and critical thinking to entrepreneurial thinking.

This programme has an exit route at Postgraduate Diploma level. 

Modules & structure

The programme contains four taught modules and a further dissertation/portfolio component.

You'll have a range of choices throughout the degree enabling you to design a pathway that is most relevant to your academic, business and career ambitions.

All students take modules I and III, and you can choose between options offered for your chosen pathway for modules II and IV.

Attendance is mandatory for all taught sections of the programme. To encourage collaborative learning we try to teach all students together wherever possible, irrespective of their particular pathway.

Module IV: Entrepreneurial Practices and Modes of Production

Either: Assigned pathway module

Delivered by the partner departments – these modules deal with creative sector issues and case studies within a specific discipline. Please see the relevant MA Creative and Cultural Entrepreneurship pathway page on the website for more information on options given for this module.

OR Work Placement

You will undertake a work placement within an SME, Producing or Research Organisation within the cultural and creative industries. There will be initial taught/tutorial sessions on managing an internship and experiential learning and assessment would be by an analytical report on the ‘culture of management’ of the organisation. In some pathways this will be augmented by classes in specific skill areas (such as marketing) as you are likely to be working in skill-specific departments of organisations.

Module V: Dissertation or Project/Portfolio

The content and research imperatives of the dissertation/portfolio can be developed in tutorials with staff to address your individual needs. It could range from an entirely written document researching a particular area of the cultural and creative industries to a fully developed proposal for a new business.

Skills

You can expect to develop an independence and integrity in developing creative ideas. You will be able to apply entrepreneurial approaches to creative projects and demonstrate an understanding of different business models to establish a creative enterprise. You will also develop team-working and leadership skills, and effective business and communication skills.

Careers

The programme will enable those who have previously studied an area of creative study/practice, such as music, media, theatre and performance, design, or computer games, to start a career developing a business arising from an existing or new creative practice.

This may relate directly to a 'product' or 'process' arising from you own practice or to a form of 'expertise', 'consultancy' or 'knowledge'. The programme will also equip those who wish to work within organisations that develop the infrastructure and environment for new creative businesses with the capacity to flourish in a variety of contexts.

You study cultural industries, institutions, texts, identities and practices from a critical perspective. You’ll explore the meaning of culture as politics and philosophy, and also:

How will I study?
Teaching is through lectures, seminars and workshops and includes guest lectures from industry professionals and researchers.

In the autumn term, you’ll take two core modules. In the spring term, you choose two options. In the summer term, you choose between working on a supervised research-led dissertation on a topic of your choice or a placement in a relevant organisation, which you will then analyse and present in a portfolio.

Assessment is by term paper, presentations and portfolios. The final assessment may take the form of a 15,000-word dissertation or a portfolio of practical and written work.

On the programme you will use your language skills and first-hand experience of different cultures to explore new territory in and around the use of languages. You will reach beyond the traditional role of translation and localisation by studying how these disciplines are applied in the creative industries, paying particular attention to the practical application of these skills in a professional environment.

You will be introduced to the emerging area of transcreation, which refers to the creative process of altering messages so they are suitable for the target local market, while maintaining its original intent, tone, style and context, and how this is used within creative industries such as arts, advertising, entertainment and marketing.

London’s rich cultural scene is central to this MA and a series of visits to festivals, studios, cinemas and galleries are incorporated into the programme, giving you the opportunity to engage first hand with the many different cultural institutions the capital has to offer. There is also the opportunity to undertake a work placement, meaning you can build a strong CV and make vital industry contacts.

In addition you will be able to study modules from a wide range of creative disciplines from the Department of Media, Culture and Languages, including audiovisual translation, film, media and journalism.

Content

In the module Think, Create, Translate: Transcreation and the Creative Industries, you will analyse different examples of translation and transcreation which you will compile into a portfolio of work (which you can use as part of your CV) and discuss how multilingualism and multiculturalism are put into practice in a creative environment. You will combine a series of lectures, workshops and group projects with visits to many of London’s cultural institutions including festivals, studios, cinemas and galleries.

In the Cultural Adaptation in the Creative Industries module, you will explore the theory and concepts that underpin practices of transcreation and localisation, drawing on multiple disciplines, including linguistics and audiovisual translation, film, game and television studies, media management and advertising. For instance, you may be analysing localised popular entertainment shows, consider regionalisation in video games and marketing campaigns, or explore localisation from an audience perspective.

There is also a wide variety of options modules on offer on a range of subjects including translation-related fields such as subtitling and videogame localisation, as well as media and communications, project management, and social media and data journalism. You can also choose between undertaking a research based dissertation and working with a cultural institution as part of a work placement.

Theoretical and analytical depth is coupled with an emphasis on the realities of contemporary cultural production, in order to deliver both a rigorous academic experience and a foundation for a career in the sector.

Programme structure

The taught element of this programme consists of six core courses, totalling 100 credits, and a slot in semester 2 in which you can take 1 or 2 course/s of your choice (totalling 20 credits). This structure allows you to develop key sector management skills and knowledge, while also providing space to tailor the programme to suit your interests and ambitions. You can choose two 10 credit options from a range offered by the Adam Smith Business School, strengthening the management component of your degree. Alternatively you can select an approved 20 credit option from another subject area. 

The teaching on the two largest core courses, Creative Industries and Cultural Policy (semester 1) and Contemporary Cultural Production (semester 2) is supported by a series of regular guest lectures, in which we invite practitioners, policy makers and key influencers from across the creative sector to share their perspectives.

Assessment is based primarily on individual written essays and assignments but also involves presentation. You will undertake academic research essays and report writing tailored to an industry brief, ensuring you develop a range of writing skills relevant to both academic and professional contexts.

In the summer period (April to August), you will complete a research dissertation (worth 60 credits) that will enable you to develop, investigate and present a substantial and original project of personal interest. The academic team within the Centre for Cultural Policy Research have extensive experience of conducting empirical studies within the creative sector, and are thus able to support a wide range of industry and policy related topics and research approaches.

Rather than putting pre-existing management and creative classes on a schedule to form a so-called “new” programme, Audencia and the GSA’s Institute of Design Innovation have jointly designed a customised programme of classes and projects that respond to emerging trends, circumstances and opportunities within the global creative economy.

Every aspect of the programme combines learning in business and management with creative processes and people. The programme is located in Nantes, France, but the GSA faculty members teach one-third of the classes – and the two-week International Winter School, which brings international design schools together in Scotland, is a highlight of the programme.

From idea to action: starting up:

Building skills to act as bridge between the worlds of creativity and business, you’ll work on a real-life collaborative project where you and your peers will be faced with design, managerial and entrepreneurial challenges.

This experiential work will serve to further develop your career project, as well as help you internalise core entrepreneurial skills and knowledge in an authentic way. Here, you can make mistakes and learn from them in a safe environment.

Creating value in the creative economy:

To have knowledge is a good thing – but to spread it is even more rewarding. During this period, you will be asked to increase societal awareness of the possibilities within the creative economy. How you communicate your knowledge about the creative economy is up to you: conference, digital project, charity work, radio programme, etc. Get creative and begin establishing yourself as a subject-matter expert.

Designing today:

Designing Today will help you develop a critical appreciation of the role of design practice and of designers as drivers of social, economic and organisational change. Your final project will be an exhibition. Topics include:

- Exploring service design and organisational design tools and methods
- Seeing social interaction as value creation
- Considering the contemporary role of designers in the area of management: industrial, experience and knowledge economies
- Understanding design not simply as the manufacture of industrial artefacts, but as an activity that creates value

Designing research:

Within Designing Research, you’ll develop an understanding of user-centred design as an ethnographic and engagement-led process of iterative development built upon collaborative working practices and creative refinement and resolution that responds to a variety of contexts. You’ll be evaluated via a project process journal and reflective writing. Components include:

- Formulating design enquiries (open-ended, empirically validated and discursive) that create the possibility of new knowledge and innovative practices or behaviours
- Methods: critical observation, ethnography, STEP analysis, future casting
- Participation in InDI’s two-week International Winter School to gain international, multi-disciplinary teaching and learning experience and develop a personal and professional network of practitioners, researchers and scholars

From idea to application:

From Idea to Application will help you internalise design practice as the material manifestation and evolution of value propositions. You’ll move from collaborative concept generation to product proposal, refinement and validation as understood across a variety of value regimes: manufacture and supply chain, branding and communication, user experience, etc.

The focus will be on the blend of industrial and digital artefacts, experience of use and the cognitive and narrative dimensions of innovative products and their collaborative production.

You’ll be evaluated through a project presentation and exhibition.

International winter school:

Led by the Institute of Design Innovation, the Winter School is an exemplar of our progressive teaching style and offers a method of research and learning that is both bespoke and distinct. The Winter School brings together international students and academics to fashion a new role for design in the exploration of a contemporary challenge during an intense two-week period.

Leading design academics and students from Köln International School of Design (KISD) and Copenhagen’s KADK (The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Schools of Architecture, Design and Conservation) will join students and academics of the GSA, Audencia and other institutions from around the globe, forming an international network of diverse disciplines.

This component of the course offers a unique opportunity to examine current issues in a transcultural environment at the GSA’s stunning new campus in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland. Research and teaching carried out during the Winter School benefit organisations and communities as well as students.

Company experience

Research or consulting project

Your project is the culmination of your programme experience and the most ambitious expression of your individual motivation, creativity and ability to deliver. It can take the shape of a research project or a consulting project done during an optional internship. You will conduct secondary research, but great value will also be placed on your own primary research efforts.

This component of the program is not required. However, we will encourage and support you in finding an internship that corresponds to your personal creative project and helps you shape your creative career.
