If you’re thinking of studying in Canada, you might be planning to work there once you graduate. But what are some of the highest paying jobs in Canada? We’ve taken a look at five job sectors with the highest median earnings (after a Masters degree), the kind of work you can do, and the highest-ranking Canadian universities for those subject areas according to the Times Higher Education World Rankings 2023.
Before we begin, remember that this is only to give you an idea of how much you can earn. Your income will depend on other factors like knowledge, skills, experience, and the company as well.
In first place, with median graduate earnings of more than CAD$106,000 is Finance. You could be working in investment banking, wealth management or financial analytics after a degree in Finance. A Masters in Finance is typically two years long and will give you the analytical thinking and reasoning skills required for the job. You’ll learn the ins and outs of financial reporting, economics and analytics, among others.
With a median graduate salary of CAD$105,500, Dentistry is not far behind. You could be working as a dental surgeon, orthodontist or hygienist, depending on your degree specialisation. A Dental degree usually lasts 2-3 years and you might also need to pass a national exam to be able to practice. You’ll be qualified to work at a practice, or even set up your own private one.
In third place is Pharmacy. You can earn around CAD$£103,000 after a Pharmacy Masters degree. You can work for pharmaceutical companies, government agencies, hospitals and clinics. You may have to go through some training as well but a Pharmacy degree will give you a strong foundation to build your career. You’ll be studying about the chemistry of drugs, preparation of medicines, as well as pathology and physiology., to name a few.
Next up is Accounting and you can expect to earn around CAD$102,600 once you’ve graduated. By the time you graduate you’ll have the skills to be able to work as a successful account manager, financial officer, bank manager or auditor. It’s a great idea to do some work experience during your Masters, whether that’s through an internship or shadowing opportunity to Along with a Masters, any work experience gained through internships or shadowing opportunities will show employers that you have the skills they are looking for (as well as the qualification).
Last but not least is Business. Even then, median earnings are as high as CAD$100,000. You could be working in sales, project management, marketing or even choose to venture out on your own as an entrepreneur. Industries like banking, healthcare and insurance have seen a significant increase in demand for Business graduates. By the time you graduate, you’ll have thorough knowledge of strategical and financial concepts that you’ll need when applying for jobs.
