The Canadian government has announced changes to its student permits including a change to minimum maintenance requirements, a two-year cap on the number of permits issued and changes to the post-study work permit.
Here’s an overview of what is changing and how it’s likely to affect your postgraduate journey. If you’re worried, it’s always good to speak to the international office at your chosen university for advice.
Starting 1 January 2024, the minimum proof of financial support required for international students is increasing from CAD$10,000 to CAD$20,635. For students in Quebec the minimum maintenance requirement will be CAD$15,078.
If you are applying for a Canadian study permit, you will need to meet these new financial requirements. There are a few ways you can demonstrate that you can support yourself like bank statements or proof of funding. Find out more about what you’ll need in our Canadian visa guide.
The Post-Graduation Work Permit allows students to stay and work in Canada after they have finished their course. Masters and PhD students will now be able to apply for a three-year post-study work permit. This is mainly a change for Masters students as previously they would only be eligible for a one or two-year permit.
However, from 1 September 2024, students starting a course that is under a curriculum licensing arrangement can no longer apply for this permit. A curriculum licensing arrangement is where a student attends a private institution that has been licensed to deliver a course by an associated public institution. Check with your university if you’re unsure whether this applies to you.
The Canadian government has announced a two-year cap on the number of international permits. For 2024, permits are being capped at approximately 360,000 which is a 35% decrease from 2023. The limit for 2025 will be announced at the end of this year.
Don’t panic, this cap does not affect Masters and PhD students currently. However, students applying for certificate and diploma courses might be affected.
