Masters degrees in Veterinary Microbiology offer postgraduate training in the interactions between microorganisms - such as bacteria, viruses, fungus, and parasites – and their animal hosts. Training in molecular biological analysis of microbe genetics and genomics is a component of most courses. Courses range from taught MSc degrees to research-based MRes and MPhil programmes. Specialisations include subjects such as Tropical Veterinary Science and Livestock Veterinary Science as well as broader branches of Animal Science and Veterinary Studies.

Why study a Masters in Veterinary Microbiology?

## You will explore host-microbe interactions in a variety of contexts, particularly in human-animal relationships. This includes analysis of disease and vaccination, dealing with the global implications of issues such as AMR (antibiotic-resistant infections) and epidemic infections such as swine flu. You will analyse microbe genetics through microbial taxonomy, bioinformatics, genome sequencing, and applied statistics. Practical experience in experiment design and lab testing, including the manipulation and extraction of tissue culture, is a large component. Careers can include roles in veterinary medicine and healthcare, agriculture and food security, biotechnical industries, wildlife and urban conservation, public health, and policy-making. If you would prefer a role in academia, your Masters will make excellent preparation for further study at PhD.
