University of Hertfordshire, School of Physics, Engineering and Computer Science Masters Degrees

We have 60 University of Hertfordshire, School of Physics, Engineering and Computer Science Masters Degrees

Here at the School of Physics, Astronomy and Mathematics, we pride ourselves on creating exceptional opportunities for students. Students have access to excellent teaching and research facilities, learn from practising scientists and mathematicians, and have ready access to get involved in research in our own laboratories or with external organisations.

The School of Physics Astronomy and Mathematics covers three cognate subject areas:

Physics

Our Physics staff in the Centre for Atmospheric and Instrumentation Research (CAIR) specialize in classical and quantum optics, investigating light scattering using lasers in applications including the study of atmospheric ice crystals, aerosols and pollutants.

Astronomy

The University’s Centre for Astrophysics Research (CAR) is one of the largest astronomy & astrophysics research groups in the country. Our interests extend from extrasolar planets to brown dwarfs, star formation, stellar evolution, the formation of galaxies and their evolution, radio galaxies and gamma-ray bursts.

Mathematics

Our Mathematics staff specialize in the optimisation of complex systems, computational modeling and financial mathematics. We use a blend of mathematical techniques, probability, statistics and computational techniques to model complex systems as they unfold, whether they are, for example, financial market data or aircraft trajectories. We also offer a taught Masters degree programme, namely the MSc Financial Market Analysis.

Facilities

A range of specialist facilities support teaching, learning and research, on and off campus.

External Links

The School works in partnership with industry, public sector and technical organisations on a range of research. We have a record of success in applying our skills and expertise to specific practical problems.

Research Focus

Research in the School has been rated as world-leading and internationally excellent in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise. Research activity is very diverse, covering some of the most exciting topics in modern science including the astrophysics of stars, galaxies and black holes, classical and quantum physics, especially light-scattering radiative and atmospheric processes, and mathematical areas including optimisation, algorithms and financial modelling, amongst others.

Research programmes leading to the award of PhD, MPhil or MSc by Research are negotiated on an individual basis. For more information or to apply for a place, please send an email to L.Nicholls@herts.ac.uk
