Sunderland’s history goes back to its time as an Anglo-Saxon settlement in the 7th century, when a local monastery became the site of Britain’s first example of a stained glass window. Although it received university status in 1992, the University of Sunderland’s roots can be traced back to 1901, when Sunderland Technical College was established.
