What’s it like to study a Masters in Sunderland?
Sunderland’s history goes back to its time as an Anglo-Saxon settlement in the 7th century, when a local monastery became the site of Britain’s first example of a stained glass window. The 18th and 19th centuries saw Sunderland at the forefront of the Industrial Revolution, developing robust coal, shipbuilding and manufacturing sectors.
Although Sunderland is no longer an industrial centre, the city has been regenerated and has a thriving arts, music and culture scene that builds on its proud heritage. Indeed, Sunderland has a reputation as a friendly and affordable place to study.
Postgraduate literature students might be interested to learn that Lewis Carroll frequently visited Sunderland, and the city claims to be the source of inspiration for several elements of his work, from Alice in Wonderland to The Walrus and the Carpenter.
As a seaside city, Sunderland is also blessed with two sandy beaches – Roker and Seaburn – as well as historic Roker Pier. Sport is a big part of Sunderland life and Sunderland AFC, the local football team, enjoys fanatic support despite mixed fortunes in recent years. Sunderland’s Stadium of Light has a capacity of 49,000, making it the eighth largest football stadium in England. Along with football matches, the stadium provides a venue for the University of Sunderland’s graduation ceremonies and has hosted concerts by the likes of Beyoncé, Rihanna and Bruce Springsteen.
