Norwich is a city in England, located in the eastern county of Norfolk. Situated close to a range of popular and attractive tourist destinations, Norwich is also an important regional education hub, with two universities and around 20,000 students.
Historically, Norwich was an administrative centre and economic hub rivalling London. It became particularly prominent following the Norman Conquest in the 11th century and its famous castle and cathedral both date from this period.
During the Industrial Revolution Norwich developed into an important location for the textile industry, having been the focus of the Norfolk wool trade for many centuries. Today the city retains a significant manufacturing sector, but has also drawn increasing science and research investment, building on the knowledge economy generated by its universities.
Whilst studying a Masters in Norwich you’ll live in one of England’s most popular tourist cities, surrounded by important local and national heritage sites.
Norwich is home to a number of high-profile entertainment venues and boasts a busy nightlife and club culture. It can also lay claim to having hosted the world’s first arts festival, over 300 years ago and is now one of England’s UNESCO Cities of Literature.
Beyond Norwich itself lies the opportunity to visit the many natural attractions and resort towns of the scenic East Anglian coast or the nearby Norfolk Broads river and canal network.
The first of Norwich’s higher education institutions to receive university status was the University of East Anglia (UEA), established in 1963. UEA is usually ranked in the top 200-250 universities worldwide and performs particularly well in comparisons of universities under 50 years old.
Norwich’s other university, the Norwich University of the Arts (NUA), can trace its founding to 1845, but became a fully independent degree-awarding institution in 2007 and a full university in 2013. It offers a range of postgraduate programmes in art and design subject areas.
Norwich has a vibrant local economy with a strong background in life sciences, creative industries and advanced engineering. Major companies with a presence in Norwich include KLM, Aviva and Virgin Money.
