Bournemouth is an attractive seaside town, located on the south coast of England, around 95 miles from London. Despite its relatively small size, there are two successful universities in the Bournemouth area and over 20,000 resident students.
Bournemouth was originally established as a coastal spa and resort town in the early 19th century. It attracted visitors from England’s growing cities, seeking relaxation and the perceived health-benefits of the town’s coastal climate and sea-bathing opportunities.
The modern town retains many features of this legacy and continues to be a popular summer tourist destination.
Postgraduate students in Bournemouth have the chance to live and study in what is still regarded as one of England’s most pleasant coastal resort areas. Interesting historical features include the town’s Victorian pier and many other buildings associated with its leisure heritage including attractive hotels, parks and gardens.
Bournemouth’s reputation as a popular seaside town is also intriguingly offset by its association with some of the classics of British horror fiction: Mary Shelley (author of Frankenstein) is buried in the town and Robert Louis Stevenson wrote The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde whilst living there.
Both of Bournemouth’s two universities actually have the majority of their buildings and facilities located in Poole, a town adjacent to Bournemouth itself, with which it forms part of the greater South East Dorset conurbation.
The area’s largest higher education provider is Bournemouth University, which was established in 1992 and has been particularly commended for its achievements in computer animation science and associated creative industries.
Arts University Bournemouth confirmed its university status in 2012, but can trace its origins to the late 19th century. It specialises in screen and media education with a strong professional employment rate.
In addition to Bournemouth’s own universities, the town is conveniently located for students wishing to study a Masters in nearby Portsmouth or Southampton.
Bournemouth has a robust economy, with particular strengths in financial services, tourism and the creative and digital sectors. JP Morgan has a major presence in Bournemouth, while neighbouring Poole is home to the headquarters of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution and cosmetics retailer Lush.
