Bath is a historic and attractive small city in the south west of England, situated roughly 100 miles from London. There are two universities in Bath and around 25,000 students.
Bath became famous in the 18th century as the site of a natural mineral spa believed – along with similar springs in Europe – to have medicinal properties.
Large numbers of visitors arrived each year, particularly from London, to spend ‘the season’ at Bath and ‘take the waters.’ One such was the famous author, Jane Austen, whose fiction depicts the city’s time as an important hub of Regency culture.
Postgraduate students in Bath live and study in a city that remains one of the most beautiful in the UK and is visited by large numbers of tourists each year.
If you fancy indulging your inner Austenite, you’ll be able to visit some of the places the famous author lived and stayed in, or explore beautiful examples of Georgian architecture such as the Royal Crescent that have changed little since Austen’s day.
Those whose interests go further back can visit the Roman Baths that gave the city its name, or, if you simply want to do some shopping you’ll find plenty of opportunities for retail therapy in Bath’s attractive commercial precincts.
Of course, Bath’s heritage as one of Britain’s most popular resort towns has also left it with a range of theatres, concert halls and other entertainment venues.
Bath’s two universities are the University of Bath and Bath Spa University. Both received their charters in the 20th century, but have already become well regarded in UK higher education.
The University of Bath was founded in 1966, whilst Bath Spa gained university status in 2005 (but dates its origins to an art school founded in 1852).
In addition to postgraduate courses at its own institutions, Bath is also a short journey from other English university cities, including Bristol (site of the University of Bristol and the University of the West of England).
Bath has a modern, knowledge-based economy with strong publishing, creative and digital sectors. International multimedia company Future is located in Bath, while the wider region is known for being home to a high concentration of microelectronics firms.
