The School of Architecture is located in the Portland Building, which was purpose designed by the Professor of Design Sir Colin Stansfield Smith in 1997.

It provides students with a range of facilities including a workshop, studios, computer suites with both Macintosh and PC systems, reprographic facilities and materials shop. There is also a refectory on the ground floor.
As a place of learning, the Portland Building provides integrated facilities for undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Staff in the School of Architecture work on a wide range of research projects in the areas of architecture, and interior,
sustainable and urban design. Research is undertaken in collaboration with the School, Faculty and University, but
more importantly, we work with academic and commercial groups outside of the University to investigate innovative
research and development connected to architecture.

In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), the University’s architecture researchers’ work was entered
as part of the Unit of Assessment Art and Design (UoA 63). Results from the RAE showed a high quality profile,
confirming that over 50 per cent of our research work was judged to be of international standing.

Most of our full-time academics have practised as architects and designers and some continue to combine practice with teaching, where their practice work supports aspects of learning and teaching in the School. In addition,
our part-time members of staff bring specialist knowledge and current experience from practice. This ensures that our
research is up-to-date and reflects the current and future needs of the industry.
