One of the biggest reasons that I wanted to study Artificial Intelligence online with the University of Leeds was because I’m interested in cognition, consciousness and learning, and AI seemed to be the perfect, innovative study topic for me.

I was looking to develop my knowledge, but throughout the course I realised that there is so much opportunity to apply it in developing the company that I currently run.

Abubakar is a lecturer at The Polytechnic Bali in Nigeria. He graduated in 2020 after completing his masters degree programme in Embedded Systems Engineering MSc (Eng) from the School of Electronic and Electrical Engineering.

Abubakar had always loved working with microcontrollers and microprocessors. He found the field to have a very wide range of applications in the modern era, and spans from biomedical, mechatroics and robotics, automobile, aerospace and much more. Moreover, as a Nigerian, Abubakar believes that Nigeria, as a developing country, needs specialists in the field in order to be self-reliant in modern technology.

To pursue his postgraduate qualification, Abubakar chose the University of Leeds because the university is research-intensive and part of the Russell Group Universities, and was ranked highly amongst competitor universities.

“The best aspect of the course was the field-programmable gate array (FPGA) design for system-on-chip module. Even though Covid-19 hindered some of my subject aims, I still found this module to be very interesting and relevant to my chosen field. It provided me with the understanding of the principles of the design of digital signal processing systems for VLSI technologies."

Firstly, I chose to study at the University of Leeds because it is one of the most prestigious universities in the UK, it has received academic awards and an outstanding reputation for the quality of education and its dedicates lots of research in the area of public health crisis, which is one of my areas of interest.

Secondly, after looking at different Masters courses in Europe and comparing their course structures, I found that the MSc offered by the University of Leeds had interesting modules with topics that I wanted to learn more about. Therefore, its course perfectly fitted to my needs since I wanted to deepen my knowledge in water, sanitation and health, mainly focusing in developing countries.

Finally, from my previous research, I realised that University of Leeds staff are not only concerned about the academic issues, but they also make sure that students enjoy their time at the university, through the Leeds University Union (LUU), offering many activities, in order to avoid stress and stimulate interpersonal and cultural development, and also this university has a fitness suite called The Edge, which has a swimming pool (my favourite!) and facilities to work out and practice sport, all of which motivated me even more to choose the University of Leeds and it’s a decision which I don´t regret for a second.

So far, apart from the massive amount of knowledge acquired first hand from experienced professors throughout all the lectures, one of the best aspects of my MSc was the exchange of knowledge and experience with my professors and classmates. My professors master their subject very well and through their didactic and interactive lectures gave us valuable knowledge based on their experience. Also, they promoted our interventions in lectures, and thus, sharing our experiences from the field and different viewpoints about the same topic with my classmates, who came from different backgrounds, helped me to learn more and expand my perspective.

Moreover, professors were very approachable so if you had any doubts, you could ask during classes or by sending them an email afterwards.

What I love most about this course is how much freedom we are given to research and explore the topics we most enjoy. There is a real focus on your personal development and plenty of opportunities to tailor the course to what you want to get out of it. At the same time, we are pushed to come out of our comfort zones and discover novel areas of research, which has allowed me to develop across a wide range of cutting-edge subjects while continuously tailoring them to my interests. Additionally, it is particularly rewarding to feel that you are continuously picking up transferrable skills for a career in science.

After completing a Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, I wanted to further my knowledge in the subject. A Masters degree is a requirement for attaining Chartered status with the Institution of Chemical Engineers, so would be extremely valuable to me in the future.

I chose the University of Leeds because of its reputation as a well-respected school for Chemical Engineering. This fully accredited degree will also provide the opportunity to undertake a significant project in an area where research is currently limited.

The best aspect of studying this course has been the broad scope of the programme. No two modules are the same, which keeps things interesting as well as expanding your knowledge across a range of subjects.

Projects often present the opportunity to develop an intimate knowledge of a specific subject area by studying it in detail. Recently, I completed a group project themed around delayed coking – a thermal-cracking process used in petrochemical refineries. The project culminated in delivering a group presentation and preparing an informative poster that was displayed in the department.

I am currently researching the potential for using glass doped with rare earth metals to non-invasively monitor the concentration of specific molecules in the human body. It’s a relatively new and promising area of research, which is exciting to be a part of.

The course was fantastic for acquiring knowledge and applying it hands-on. We had anatomy cadaveric teaching sessions, MSK examinations, teaching from physiotherapists and surgeons as well as researchers who are experts in their fields. My research project was carried out in partnership with the English FA as part of their agreement with FIFA to produce research relating to the recent rule change of concussion substitutions.

When reading about the different courses I applied to, the University of Leeds’ course stood out to me. It gave me the opportunity to combine the areas of interest I developed during my undergraduate degree.

In the practical sessions you are working with actual, real-world data which gives you experience that you can take into a career. Through different modules you learn a variety of methods to work with data, such as coding and GIS. By exploring different methods, you can really find what interests you and where to look for a career.

I chose to come to Leeds University for this course as it was unique and different compared to the other master’s at different Universities. The opportunity to undertake a placement as part of the course and the fact that the course was taught by industry experts were key factors that made me decide to choose Leeds University.

Ben Swift graduated from the School of Computing where he studied his masters - Advanced Computer Science MSc.

Choosing Leeds:

Ben chose to study a MSc in Advanced Computer Science as he wanted to delve deeper into areas of computing that he had enjoyed studying at undergraduate level. Additionally, he wanted to look into new areas and felt Leeds had a fantastic range of modules he could do this with, such as cloud computing, graphics, AI and big data. For Ben the range of modules on offer, the University of Leeds’s reputation and the wonderful city stood out when looking for a masters course.

Building a career in computing:

From the modules Ben studied at Leeds he gained the technical knowledge and experience that has helped him to start a career in a field that he loves. Working as a software Engineer at the BBC, Ben work in the team that develops and maintains the BBC’s interactive TV services. His role provides additional television channels for events like Wimbledon, Glastonbury and the Olympics, as well as enabling people to access BBC iPlayer from their TV. Ben said “I’m lucky enough to be part of a team whose work is used by millions of people and can be seen on everyone’s TV in the UK.”

He continued, “I now use skills that I learnt at Leeds every day in my job. For example, the Cloud Computing module taught me the skills that I use as a software engineer working with cloud-based systems.”

Advice from a Leeds alumnus:

As a Leeds alumnus Ben gave the following advise “Get involved in whatever you can! There are so many great opportunities at university, especially at Leeds, that you’ll never get elsewhere. You will learn so many skills on the course but make sure to delve into the other opportunities at university and across Leeds. Make the most of living in the best city in the UK!”

He continued “While studying, there’ll definitely be things that you will struggle with. So don’t be afraid to ask for help. Lecturers are not only extremely passionate about their subject but also brilliantly supportive - and are always happy to help out with anything.”

Why did you decide to study a Masters at the University of Leeds?

I had completed my BEng in Civil Engineering prior at the University of Leeds and in light of the COVID-19 I wanted to stay in familiar territory, as well as this I was able to complete my masters with 10% discounted from the original price as I was a Leeds alumnus.

I also wanted to stay at the University of Leeds as the Sustainability and Consultancy MSc was a niche masters degree which I had not found elsewhere at any other university during my search for a masters degree, I was impressed with the School of Earth and Environment and their commitment to sustainability through the Sustainability Research Institute which encouraged me to complete the MSc with the school.

What has been the best aspect of studying on your course and at the University so far and why?

The Sustainability Consultancy Project which was an independent piece of work which provided a unique insight of working in industry for a real life client and conducting a project of your choice, at your own pace, which allowed for independent learning as well as supportive academic advice throughout.

What would you say to students coming to do the same course?

The best thing I can say is try to enjoy the MSc as much as you can and remember that help is always at hand if you need it, teaching staff are always available and not only are they friendly, they are also extremely supportive throughout your studies. The teaching school was able to cater to my battles with mental health as well as family and religious commitments throughout the MSc and this enabled me to complete the MSc to the best of my ability.

Why did you choose to study this course at the Institute for Transport Studies?

After graduating I decided to do a Masters, the only question was where? Application deadlines in my home country and most Northern-European countries are in March and April, but the UK has different deadlines. When the UK seemed to be my only option at that point, it was an easy choice to come to Leeds. Not only because of ITS’ world-leading expertise in transport and wide variety of transport masters, but also because I lived for a short period in Manchester 2 years prior so I was familiar with the area.


What has been the best aspect of studying your course so far and why?

It is hard to mention one aspect. When I arrived, I really enjoyed the introduction weeks. I was amazed by the help and support offered to students. If you have any problem, there is always a person on campus who can help you. Even for things like culture shock, support is offered. Regarding the course, I would definitely call the variety of ways to learn the best aspect. There are not just lectures being given, but also site visits, external seminars, job fairs, trips and things like the Metropoly game and the bumper cars challenge that are organised.

To clarify, the Metropoly game aims to collect as many points as possible that can be collected by visiting West Yorkshire’s train stations and other points of interest over the period of a day. As a fanatic team player, I was super excited to take up this challenge. In the end, it was all about having fun and exploring rail and bus travel and the beauty of West Yorkshire’s scenery.

What experiences at Leeds do you think will help you in your future career?

The Career Centre provides effective support in finding a job from application process to interviews. Since I never applied for a graduate role, it really contributes to my current skill set. Critical thinking and essay writing are things I am also really advancing during this course. Lecturers push you towards the critical mindset, which you will require throughout your professional career. Additionally, functioning in a multicultural environment prepares you in the best way for your career, by overcoming communication and methodological issues.

Choosing to study Environmental engineering, especially in terms of water and wastewater treatment technique, was one of the main areas I wished to improve in my previous career, and the University of Leeds was the only university in the UK to offer this course.

The best aspect of the course highlighted fundamental skills in water, wastewater and solid waste treatment and management and also provided broader knowledge in the related fields of water resources, bioenergy and project management. These form the core of environmental engineering. The course taught us the main ideas and concepts of the field of environmental engineering and provided chances for us to carry out further research in our future career or studies. I think this was the best aspect of studying at the university.

For any students thinking about studying the same course at Leeds, if you want to strengthen your ability in water, wastewater and solid waste engineering design in an efficient way, this one-year Master’s degree course at the University of Leeds is a good choice. Applying wasn’t complicated and there was no need to take GRE exams. The cost (including both the tuition and the living cost) was reasonable for a postgraduate education and it’s also rational and feasible from a timing and financial point of view. The one-year of study was very intense and tough, but I obtained a Distinction degree after working hard. Studying at Leeds was challenging at times but I really enjoyed my time there.

During my final year of bachelor’s studies, I had often found myself thinking about what the next best move would be for me. I knew I was going to pursue a Master’s degree, but I was not sure which one would suit my high expectations. I really needed a great challenge and after doing some research on available courses, it felt like the Structural Engineering MSc (Eng) offered by the University of Leeds was the best fit. The impressive results from UK and world university rankings were also appreciated incentives.

I was very impressed by how much effort Professors put into supporting students to innovate and how passionate they are about their fields, engaging everyone rather than making you feel like you are just there to listen and take notes. Socially speaking, I really appreciated the opportunity to meet people with very different cultural backgrounds than mine. It really broadened my perspective about the world we live in.

I would advise anyone thinking about starting this course to equip themselves with a lot of ambition, enthusiasm and patience. Also, do not hesitate to contact Alumni for more information; sometimes small details about the course could prove meaningful for someone undecided.

Overall, as with all good things in life, it gets tougher before it gets easier, and with this course, in particular, it never really gets easier. The field of Structural Engineering can be very challenging, especially as you can often get lost in so many technical details. Nevertheless, anyone who is passionate about finding solutions to complex problems will most definitely find a lot of satisfaction by the end of this course.

I chose to study my course to learn about how big data and precision medicine are furthering our knowledge in biology, medicine, and public health. As someone with a biomedical sciences background, I’m proud I was able to learn and use calculus, statistics, and programming beyond what I had ever learnt before.

Ellen Dyson is a post-graduate student, currently studying the Sustainable Food Systems MSc at the University of Leeds.

The most enjoyable element to the course:

As a result of winning a competition, Ellen was given the opportunity to produce a publication alongside one of her peers, multiple leading academics, industry professionals, and civil society specialists.

The competition was hosted by Ellen’s professor, Louise Dye, who is also an International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI) Global Board Co-Chair.

The best two 300-word summaries of the publication's subject were chosen to compose the publication and attend the ILSI Annual Symposium in Brussels. The trip was fully funded by ILSI and the University.

“The publication was about a roundtable discussion, held by ILSI, where the topic was the impact of the Ukraine-Russia conflict on global food supply chains and immediate actions that should be taken to mitigate these impacts.”

What aspect of your course inspires you?

“My course inspires me in many aspects. Coming from a biological background, I am particularly interested in the sustainable food production and nutrition side of things...

Sustainability is something that I am incredibly passionate about, hence why I chose the course, so I find scientists that devote their research to improving the sustainability of the food system inspiring.”

Making an impact:

Ellen's studies have used a multidisciplinary, problem-based learning approach to investigate the environmental, social, and economic sustainability of the food system and generate ideas for solutions to current issues.

I decided to study a masters at the University of Leeds because of its great prestige and recognition as one of the best universities in the world. In addition, the University of Leeds offers the opportunity of having experiences beyond the studies as it has extracurricular activities that allow students to feel more engaged with the university. I chose the University of Leeds because there are about thirty thousand students from all over the world studying here so this fact would give me the opportunity to share experiences with people from different cultures Therefore I can expand my horizons in the field by sharing experiences and different viewpoints. The University of Leeds is also recognised for providing all the facilities and assistance for international students.

The best aspect so far has been the quality of teaching since I have had the opportunity to share experiences with professors who domain the subjects. Additionally, they want to share their knowledge with their students through didactic and practical classes. Professors have given me new knowledge based on their experiences which I’m sure I will apply once I finish the course. Furthermore, having classmates from different parts of the world is an amazing experience as we share different opinions about the topics studied and we discuss how the knowledge can be applied from different perspectives.

After finishing my studies at Leeds, I will start with my own construction company since I will be able to combine the knowledge gained during my career with my previous work experience. The knowledge gained here at Leeds has given me the necessary tools to start my own business.

My background is in electronic and electrical engineering, and I have always been interested in using AI and machine learning models to enhance the performance of electric vehicles, and particularly electric batteries.

I felt that the course could be a really powerful tool for me to develop my knowledge of the subject.

I chose to study this course online because it allowed me to keep my job while being able to pursue the Masters. I work better as an independent learner, so I felt that online learning is something that’s better suited for me.

What experiences at Leeds do you think have particularly helped with your career?

Through MSc Transport Planning, I could obtain deeper and wider understanding of transport related issues from a diverse perspective including modelling, social science, and economics. Since my background is in Civil Engineering, getting to see transport from different perspectives helped me to rethink what is transport and what is mobility. This experience influenced when I considered my PhD subject. Also, since Institute for Transport Studies (ITS) is culturally very diverse community, I experienced very interesting, thought-provoking and enjoyable interaction with my course mates. I could make a strong global network throughout my masters course and it will definitely help my future career after my PhD.

Looking back, why did you choose to study your particular course?

The reason why I chose ITS was because ITS was globally famous as one of the best transport research centres in the world. Besides, I was planning to do a PhD after my master’s course and my undergraduate dissertation supervisor knew Prof Dave Watling in ITS who is now my current supervisor and he recommended me to do PhD study under his supervision. For me, a masters course was preparation for my PhD study as well as an opportunity to get better knowledge and insight of transport studies.

What was the best aspect of the course/the University and why? Any highlights?

The best aspect of the course was the high quality of lectures and course works. The structure of the lectures was organised very well. In addition, by doing coursework and attending lectures, I could gain a solid understanding of transport issues. Also, all the staff were really friendly and supportive. I didn’t feel any hesitation or difficulty to get any help when I faced a problem.


What would you say to students thinking about studying the same course at Leeds/thinking about the same career?

I’m confident that ITS is the right place to study master course for your academic and professional carrier. You are required to do a lot of hard work, and especially it is not easy for international students to study and get used to a new environment at the same time. However, if you need any help, you can always reach support easily. Just be ready for a hard work, do your best, and enjoy the whole experience with your course mates!

Iyad Al Qudah completed his masters degree in Electrical Engineering and Renewable Energy Systems in 2015 and is currently working as an Electrical Engineer at Atkins.

Iyad chose to study at Leeds because the University of Leeds is ranked as one of the top universities in the UK, as well as the student experience it offers. Iyad said, “the student experience that Leeds offers is holistic and broad. In addition, the university sits within the heart of a very nice city which makes it convenient to enjoy the city life.”

Iyad really enjoyed the course. He found the course offers very topics and modules that are relevant to the current world energy and power demands, such as the implementation of renewable technologies and energy management. He added, “The course also focuses a lot on the integration and complications of integrating those modern technologies into the electricity grid, which at the time of my studies, made it stand out from similar masters courses.”

Jihai graduated from the University of Leeds in 2020, with a Masters degree in Communications and Signal Processing. He is currently pursuing his postgraduate research studies in ‘Handover techniques for Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) mobility communication network’.

Jihai has always been passionate about wireless commucations, and chose the Communications and Signal Processing MSc through recommendations from his peers. It was also a great opportunity for him to extend his passion in this field of study. Jihai added, “Wireless communications can play a really important role for the development of intelligent world, which is the future, and I wanted to be part of it.”

Through the course, Jihai were able to understand the subject more widely, as the course provided him with a thorough inroduction to the different aspects of Digital Signal Processing. He said, “It is useful for people like myself who wants to have a deeper understanding in the subject area.”

Joel Deladem Klo graduated from the School of Computing where he studied his masters in Advanced Computer Science (Artificial Intelligence).

Postgraduate life at Leeds:

Joel choose to study at the University of Leeds as he was attracted by the opportunity to take optional modules. Now working as a Big Data Engineer for bigspark limited he said “This was really amazing because even though my master’s was an Advanced Computer Science with a focus in Artificial Intelligence MSc, I got the opportunity to take Big Data related modules as well which was an additional key area of interest as evidenced by my current role.”

He added “It’s really good provision as it enables students to be experts of related fields and not just boxed into a single space thereby increasing the number of career opportunities students can access.”

Projects at the university:

During his time at the university Joel worked on developing an Image Classification model and an Image Caption Generation model (both based on Artificial Neural Networks). Additionally, for his dissertation he had the chance to develop an Immigration Advisor Chatbot.

Life at Leeds:

Outside of studying there is plenty of activities and societies students can take part in. Joel added “I was a member of the Leeds Chess Society and School Chess Team; taking part in some inter-university tournaments and local chess leagues.”

I did my undergraduate under the same course at Leeds University, having said that, the leading research, amazing facility, and outstanding academic staff is what persuaded me to further my studies here. When I came across mechatronics and robotics prior to my first degree in Leeds, I was intrigued by the course outline and became more engrossed with knowing what the field can provide me. True to the definition of Mechatronics, the engineering at Leeds has shown to be able to deliver the multidisciplinary field. As one of the leading research universities in the UK, the course also integrates other fields of engineering into their modules. By doing so, students can forge new pathways in the ever growing industry and research.

The best aspect of the course would be the knowledge, opportunities and experiences gained from being part of the mechanical and electrical and electronics department. As the course is a joint program between two departments, the best of both departments were experience to the fullest. Both schools were able to offer outstanding staff and hi-tech facilities such as laboratories and teaching spaces in order to develop us.

Leeds is ever growing and is a great city for students. It certainly has something to offer for all. Whether it is a night out in town, a walk about the parks, or even getting a meal with some friends, Leeds has such to offer. In my opinion, Leeds is gradually developing and I hope it continues to grow as a great city for everyone to study, work, and live in.

In the future, I hope to work in the field of research and development (R & D) and/or become a forefront engineering consultant. Currently, I aspire to do a PhD to further develop myself and reach a goal that I had set for myself prior to taking my first degree.

What would I say to students coming to do the same course? Take your time to really think and develop yourself. You have to love the work to excel in it. It was and still is a great experience studying here.

Kolade Victor Otokiti is a postgraduate student at the school of Earth and Environment, studying an Environment and Development MSc.

During the ‘Critical Perspectives in Environment and Development’ module, Kolade employed the political ecology approach to investigate the relationship between payment for ecosystem services and poverty reduction in developing countries.

Why did you choose to study this course at the Institute for Transport Studies?

After finishing an undergraduate programme in Management at the Siberian Federal University (Krasnoyarsk, Russia), I decided to divert from my background and get deeper into applied science, economics in particular. I had never heard of Transport Economics as a programme until I came across it on the University of Leeds website. Having compared this programme to similar ones in the UK and in Europe, I realised that the scientific expertise and teaching in ITS were of the highest level and that a wide net of successful alumni worldwide supported this notion. Now I can verify that everything I had discovered about the course was true.


What has been the best aspect of studying your course so far and why?

Transport Economics is usually a moderately small group of students which gives you more opportunities to engage into the learning process and have conversations with professors. Some modules included guided computer sessions to provide a hands-on approach, which I found very helpful as we did not just study pure theory but acquired practical skills as well.

What experiences at Leeds do you think will help you in your future career?

The university provides a strong academic support. For example, ITS collaborates closely with transport consultancies to make sure that the skills delivered by the programmes are in demand from employers. Thus, the students get only practically applicable and useful skills.


Moreover, Leeds itself is great city to study in because of the student-friendly environment. I have met people from all over the world which was a great opportunity to learn how to work in a multicultural setting. Such experience is valuable as you learn how to tackle cultural differences and communicate with people with various backgrounds.

Lu Liu graduated from the School of Mathematics where she studied her masters - Data Science and Analytics MSc.
Choosing Leeds
After completing her undergraduate degree in engineering Lu worked in the oil and gas industry where she developed an interest in Data Science and decided to switch career path to pursue a masters in this field. When asked the reason she chose Leeds, Lu said “The reason is quite simple, I fell in love with the campus the first time I saw the photos online, and it turns out I made the right decision.” She added “I had an amazing year studying at Leeds. Not to mention the high-quality teaching, I had plenty of opportunities to develop myself and to grow via various activities and events.”
Academic life
Studying at the School of Mathematics Lu said “I would say the best aspect of studying my course is the libraries on campus which provide a range of study environments with extensive computer facilities. The Edward Boyle Library is the one where I went almost every day while I was studying in Leeds. It has a rich collection of books / E-books that were required by my course.”
She continued “The best thing about the Edward library is that it has a dedicated floor for staff and postgraduates, including individual study rooms which can be easily booked online. Additionally, libraries also provide study booths that are suitable for group discussions.”

I chose to study at Leeds because it's a prestigious university that would allow me to complete vigorous studies as well as study abroad. They had similar research opportunities that I was involved in during my undergraduate degree.

I chose to study a masters at the University of Leeds as it is a Russell Group university which means that it is among the leading 24 universities in the UK that are committed to the highest educational standards and have a sound reputation within both the public and private sectors. Thus, obtaining a masters degree from the University of Leeds will result in both tangible and intangible benefits for degrees’ holders wherever they go.

The best aspect of studying this course was that the structure of the engineering project management program caught my attention from the first moment. As presented on the website, and validated later on through lectures and assignments, it is focused, relevant and comprehensive, and equips the students with the tools and techniques required to succeed not only in their careers but also in their personal lives. The eight modules are efficiently distributed throughout the academic year so that students, with proper planning and time management, can easily meet their academic obligations and fulfill their personal interests. If I have to describe the program in few words then I will say it is the program that helps the individual to learn and apply logical, analytical, critical, strategic and creative thinking in addressing different contemporary problems in order to come up with optimum solutions. Although it is true that concepts such as project planning, value management and risk management are taught in the context of engineering projects management, I noticed that they are of a great value in both micro and macro levels. One example is related to the value management module in which we studied that the value of anything increases as its functions increase or the required resources decrease. This simple, but important, concept stimulated my thinking to maximize the value of several items in my house by using them for different purposes. Another example is related to risk management module in which we studied how to identify and assess relevant risks in order to make better decisions which is a skill that could be used on the level of operation, project, corporate and even country.

Why did you choose to study this course at the Institute for Transport Studies?

I chose this course because I wanted to enhance my knowledge in Public Transport, including topics related to vehicle emissions and impact on environment and health. Additionally, I looked at each transport department in the UK and I realised that ITS is the best in the UK and one of the best around the world. Secondly, the wide range of areas covered by the course was relevant for me because I did not want to learn about specific topics or fields in transport. Besides this, ITS gives us the opportunity to choose the modules which you are most interested in.

What has been the best aspect of studying your course so far and why?

There are several interesting aspects, but the most relevant for me is that ITS has a close relationship with companies, councils, institutions and communities, and is involves in the most relevant transport issues in the UK. Therefore, we are learning about current matters, projects and transport issues as well as learning the new trends for building sustainable cities.

What experiences at Leeds do you think will help you in your future career?

I think the most helpful experience will be the dissertation because I am working with TfL on the topic of bus reliability and the impact this has on revenue and demand. Therefore, I am working with one of the most important department of transport around the world and solving real issues, adding value to the transport system in London.

Tell us about some of the exciting projects you have completed.

One of the exciting projects was finishing the redesign of Leeds City Square. In this project we were working in groups with students from different backgrounds, developing a sustainable solution for the council in order to increase the levels of walking and cycling across the city square.

How has the Institute’s link with industry improved your future job prospects?

ITS has close connections with companies and, because of this, we recently spent two days with relevant people from the best transport companies around the world, where they did a presentation about their companies, projects and positions. Furthermore, we had the opportunity to get interviews with them which was amazing for me since I got a job in London in a fantastic company.

Why did you decide to study a masters at the University of Leeds?

Having never studied nutrition before, I chose Leeds for my Masters due to the quality of the course (including its accreditation) and breadth of modules offered which I felt matched my interests and would give me an excellent founding on many topics in nutrition. I was also drawn to Leeds as a city because of its vibrant atmosphere.

What has been the best aspect of studying on your course and at the University so far and why?

The best aspect of studying MSc Nutrition so far has been the opportunity and encouragement to pursue your own interests through independent study and within assignments along with acquiring skills relevant not only to the course but also later life, more generally. The University also has a number of excellent facilities which fosters creative and productive learning environments.

Tell us about some of the exciting projects you have completed.

The assignments throughout the course have been varied in terms of subject matter and structure, ranging from individual to group work. For example, there has been the opportunity to complete lab projects to hone scientific technical skills; and to carry out an epidemiological project in small groups – I am focussing on the impact of stress on eating habits. I am also looking forward to completing a project addressing the impact of polyphenol consumption on glycemic index of food in the summer.

What experiences at Leeds do you think will help you in your future career?

I think the focus on developing skills in critical appraisal of current scientific work will be of paramount importance for my (and any) future career. Along with this, assignments and deadlines are tailored to be reflective of a real-life working environment. Group work gives experience of working with others towards a common goal.

More broadly, for those unsure of a career path, the University runs a number of careers fairs throughout the year (subject and non-subject specific) which gives you the opportunity to meet potential employers. The careers service is very proactive in the School of Food Science and Nutrition, proving an array of information for nutrition-related opportunities and careers.

Nikolaos graduated with a masters degree in Engineering, Technology and Business Management from the School of Electronic and Electrical Engineering in 2016. He is currently working as a Data Scientist at Lloyds Banking Group in London.

Nikolaos had alwys wanted to study in one of the best universities in the UK, and on a masters programme that would be able to provide him with the best tools for his future career. “I work as a Design Engineer with involvement across a lot of projects as well as working with various other teams. I was keen to choose a course that would enable me to apply my learning to practical solutions in the real world. Engineering Management connects to my day to day job and gives me a field to elevate my thoughts above design engineering and see the bigger picture of the engineering sector. For example, the people side of things; as engineers, we sometimes forget the importance of this. I really like how the course has balanced the technicalities with the management aspects of engineering, which has enabled me to see how the management function helps to drive the technical productivity.”

What have you been doing since finishing your studies?

After my masters I worked at the Priestley International Centre for Climate at the University of Leeds as a research assistant. My job consisted in understanding how CO2 and black carbon emitted to the atmosphere affect extreme precipitation events in Africa. At the moment I am in the second year of my PhD in atmospheric sciences also at the University of Leeds.

What company are you working for, what does your role involve?

My PhD aims to understand the climate impacts of a phenomenon called El Niño-Southern Oscillation. This phenomenon has climate impacts across the world and it is very important to know more about how it works and especially how its impacts will be in a changing climate. The more we know about it the sooner we can anticipate to its impacts.

In a normal day, I analyse data from climate models and make plots and maps to visualise my results. I also read papers to stay up to date with the latest advances in the field and attend seminars and group meetings.

Why did you choose to study your course and why did you choose Leeds?

I was looking for a master’s program that included both theoretical (lectures) and practical (research) component of the atmospheric science. I was enthusiastic about a career in academia and this course offered the opportunity to try and live as a researcher for a year. At an international level, there are not many courses like this one where you can both broaden your theoretical knowledge and learn how to be a good researcher so this was a unique opportunity.

What was the best aspect of your course?

It is a difficult choice, but I would say the research atmosphere that exists in the School of Earth and Environment. Everyone there is very passionate about what they do, and that enthusiasm ultimately passes on you. There is always something going on: from internal seminars to invited speakers every week, science workshops, social activities, etc… The MRes can be tough sometimes but being part of such a strong research community makes everything easier.

Also, I loved my masters project and my supervisors were very supportive and encouraging. I was part of a research group and during our biweekly meetings I had the chance to get feedback and learn from more advanced postgraduate researchers.

This course will challenge you in a number of ways, from work load to the different styles of assessment including essays, research papers and presentations. However, you’re also given the support and time to do this.

Why did you decide to study a masters at the University of Leeds?

Firstly, I always thought studying abroad would be a great opportunity to open my eyes to the new culture and to build confidence, language skill and life experience. Studying in UK was my first option when I did a research on which university I should apply to, Leeds always come up as one of the top ranks in Food Science programs. I looked more at the course information, the university and the city of Leeds and finally knew that this is the place for me.

What has been the best aspect of studying on your course and at the University so far and why?

I think the best thing that this course offered to me is a chance to study both in nutrition and food science aspects at the same time, which is very good for me who have nutrition background but also curious about the world of food science. In terms of the University, I was impressed by facilities that the University provide for students which help me a lot during my study here.

What does Leeds as a city have to offer students?

Leeds has everything. It’s not too small but not too crowded. The university and our accommodation are located very near to the city centre. There are supermarkets, fresh market, shopping malls, cinemas, museums and many restaurants. I can walk to all of this places within 20 minutes from the university.

What experiences at Leeds do you think will help you in your future career?

I have learned a lot from this course. Not only about food science and nutrition, but also about life skills. I learned how to work with people from different cultures as a team, how to manage times, problem solving and many more. These skills would definitely help me in my future career.

Qing graduated with a masters degree in Electronic and Electrical Engineering from the School of Electronic and Electrical Engineering in 2015. He is currently working as a Product Manager at Hisense UK Ltd based in Leeds, UK.

Qing completed his undergraduate degree in Automation. When applying to continue his studies at a postgraduate level, he applied to quite a few institutions and had offers from several British universities. Choosing Leeds:

“Primarily, I chose Leeds because the content of the course appealed to me, more so than with other mainstream Environmental Economics courses offered by other universities.”

I have written a few Review papers and one Research paper as a part of the curriculum. I would be performing my research project June onwards on a very interesting topic related to lipid encapsulation and Nutraceuticals.

What would you say to students coming to do the same course?

University of Leeds is one of the finest and recognised Universities of the UK and Internationally. This course is perfect for any individual interested in gaining in depth knowledge and its practical application in Food Science and Biotechnology. A large list of reputed future prospects like setting up your own industry or working at an established food industry as a scientist, researcher, manager, New product developer, quality analyst, etc. are open after this interesting course.

I chose Leeds as I did my year abroad at the University of Leeds and I loved it, so I decided to come back for my Masters.

The best aspect of studying my course was I liked the fact that you could choose the subjects you wanted to do. I wanted to do a mix of applied and pure mathematics courses, so MSc Mathematics at the University of Leeds was perfect. Leeds is also a great city, I come from Madrid, so Leeds felt smaller but still had loads of choices and activities to do in your free time. I think that’s why I like it. I would say the student life at Leeds is amazing. It doesn’t matter what your hobbies are or what type of person you are, you will always find your place and enjoy your time. I have made loads of friends and found most of the activities I like to do so I never get bored.

The course has definitely given me confidence for the future and made me realise that anything can be enjoyable if you have the right attitude. Who knows if maybe someday I will use my master’s to get into a PhD or find a job in a company.

Saad graduated with a masters degree in Electronic and Electrical Engineering in 2018. He is currently a manager working at DrillTech Corporation.

Saad chose to pursue his masters degree in Electronic and Electrical engineering from the University of Leeds because he felt the course was an up-to-date programme covering broad engineering topics. He was able to study modules related to novel technologies like renewable energy, medical electronics and embedded systems which other institutions did not offer.

He said, “The best aspect of the course was we had the opportunity to work on projects in every module. Saile Villegas graduated from the School of Computing where she studied her masters - Advanced Computer Science (Data Analytics) MSc.

Choosing Leeds:

Saile chose to study a master at the University of Leeds, mainly because of its reputation, more specifically the reputation of the School of Computing and its cutting-edge research activities. She said “The fact that the School of computing is one of the best in the UK was what caught my eye, at first. However, other factors influenced my decision. I wanted to enrol in a course that was focused on Data Analytics and I found exactly what I was looking for at the University of Leeds.”

She added “The taught modules such as Machine Learning, Data Science, Big Data Systems, Data mining and Text analytics, amongst others, were very appealing before enrolling and I can assure you that they did not disappoint.”

Building a career in computing:

After graduating Saile co-founded a MedTech company called Seeai with a fellow Leeds alumnus. The company is based in the Nexus building, at the University of Leeds. After meeting during their studies they are now working on developing AI technology to help patients and doctors. She commented “As a first product, we are working on an AI that can automatically detect bone fractures in X-ray images. We have been developing our technology alongside NHS Scotland since 2019. Our technology can help reduce the workload of radiologists, speed up diagnostic times and improve patient care.”

Projects at Leeds:

During the later part of the course student are required to complete a research project. Saile said “We were allowed to choose amongst many different exciting projects for our final MSc Project.”

She added “I had the opportunity to work on a project with a local company, where I was able to apply the knowledge acquired during the MSc programme, to process and analyse healthcare data into a project that had a real-world impact.”

I chose the University of Leeds as it has a reputation for offering quality training and research-based learning which not only equips learners with skills and knowledge but also makes them critical thinkers and with solutions-oriented mindsets. I decided to take an online course as it gives me flexibility in balancing work, family and academic matters. This has made it easy for me to plan myself accordingly since my work entails a lot of field work, as a Geographer. Stylianos graduated in 2016 with a masters degree in Electrical Engineering and Renewable Energy Systems from the School of Electronic and Electrical Engineering. He is currently a Project Engineer at Northern Powergrid.

As one of the best universities in the UK, the University of Leeds has a good reputation in my home country and all over the world. A lot of tutors and friends recommended the MSc here in Leeds as it’s one of the top research engineering departments in the UK, led by outstanding academic staff and researchers with a good facilities for studying.

The best aspect of being a student at the University of Leeds is that it pushes your ambitions as well as making you seek the best outcomes in your work. In addition, the course offers a wide variety of multidisciplinary modules.

The course provides you with theoretical knowledge in addition to practical work, as some of the modules feature computer-based learning and some taught in laboratories. The teachers and leading professors are experts in various areas such as solar energy, wind energy, combustion, pollution and biofuels.

As a student at the University of Leeds, I have been involved in several group and individual projects that have introduced me to real world concepts. I am currently working on my dissertation project, which is looking at the performance of domestic solar power systems and the potential for them to contribute to renewable energy targets.

Tian graduated from the School of Computing where he studied his masters - High Performance Graphics and Game Engineering MSc.

Choosing Leeds:

After working as a programmer in the mobile-phone industry for 3 years, Tian decided to pursue his passion to work in the game industry and enrolled on a masters at the University of Leeds.

He said “I chose Leeds as I found the curriculum to be flexible. It covers the most important areas in the game field such as game engine, animation, rendering and provides a lot of practice for students.”

Building a career in computing:

After graduating, Tian began working as a game programmer at Red-Kite Games a subsidiary of Sumo-Group. Tian said “My job is highly related to this course, my role includes game engine and graphics development”.

Whilst studying at the school Tian gained many experiences. About this he said, “I think the most important one is teamwork because teamwork is priority when we work.”

He added “I participated in a competition in game area, without teamwork one person would have not been able to so do much work. I am very grateful to my teachers and team members for what I have learnt as it is very useful for my future career.”

Projects at Leeds:

During Tian’s studies he took park in a project through the school. He said “I was involved with an exciting team project. We had a team of 5 people who participated in the annual event called the Game Republic. Our aim was to develop a game engine. With the help of Professor He Wang, and 3 months of learning and coding, our team won the first prize in this year’s competition. Winning this prize helped me to find a good job.”

Advice from a Leeds alumnus:

When asked what he would pass onto prospective students, Tian said “The course content requires strong programming skills. Before you choose to study in this area, you need to ensure you keep high enthusiasm and a strong interest in this area. I would highly recommended that you self-study this course content in advance.”

“I think that the combination of having the course delivered online, as well as the support from the University of Leeds staff has been a real bonus. In addition to having the flexibility to catch up on recorded webinars when I cannot attend, this course overall gives me the opportunity to study and complete my assignments when my time permits me to do so.”

What it's like to study at Leeds:

I had to do a lot of background reading in the first semester. The lecturers are very understanding and agreed to extra classes, revision and personal tutorship. The combination of both the personal and professional touch made the difference for me. Now I am in my second semester and I have a better understanding of the basic concepts required hence, my studies are generally going on seamlessly.

An MSc generally requires proper time management and you can be able to add extra-curricular activities to your schedule without adversely affecting the studies. Cloud Computing is a very practical course and I have been exposed to a cloud testbed that exists in the school where I have learnt quite a lot from.

The best aspects of studying at the university:

The Student support team are great, they are always ready to answer the most trivial questions. I also enjoy all of the facilities on campus, including The Edge gym, libraries and the cafe's. The Leeds University Union has got a lot of Societies to help when you need to relax, there are even programs for student-parents and their children!

Looking back, why did you choose to study your particular course at the University of Leeds?

The well-structured curriculum has kept the course highly recognised and relevant within the industry.

The course has been designed to equip graduates with in-depth technical skills and the school has maintained close relationships with companies to ask for advice to keep the course up to date by revising the curriculum in order to ensure graduates meet the standards and quality expected by employers. This undoubtedly has enhanced the employability of students and helped them to be competent enough to solve the challenges faced in the workplace.


What was the best aspect of the course and studying at the University? What were your highlights?

A big merit was the practical assignments based on real case examples, including the bridge-crossing assessment, pumping test interpretation, contaminated land assessment, rock cavern design, lab data analyses, etc.

These assignments allowed students to get involved more easily and provided a better imagination and visualisation of the problems. The debriefings or feedback sections of these assignments were especially useful with lecturers pointing out common problems or mistakes faced by practitioners in the sector.

The field trip to Cyprus was another highlight which let students apply knowledge learnt throughout the semesters to the problems on site. Moreover, students had the access to a large variety of the latest software, including gINT, ArcGIS and Rocscience tools etc., which are commonly used in the industry.

The University’s Careers Centre was a truly useful platform which arranged advisory services, resume and cover letter checking and mock interviews. Mock interviews were particularly helpful as the interviewers commonly had working experience in the same or related industry and knew the background and usual practice of different employers.


What would you say to students thinking about studying the same course at Leeds or thinking about the same career?

All the aforementioned are what is offered by the School but whether or not you can make use of this platform to transform yourself depends on your own efforts.

It will be a challenging yet fruitful and enjoyable year. After a year, when you look back, you will then realise how much you have gained. I hope you can enjoy the time in Leeds like I did.

Yasmin Roberts studied Exploration Geophysics MSc at the School of Earth and Environment.

Career

Yasmin is now working as a seismic processing geophysicist at DUG, where she undertook my MSc project as an internship.

“The seismic processing module has been directly relevant for my career, but I have also found a well-rounded understanding of exploration geophysics to be especially useful. Each module emphasised how the skills learnt can be applied to the clean energy transition.”

Exciting projects

Yasmin undertook a high frequency reflection full waveform inversion (FWI) imaging project.

“This used high frequency seismic data to produce high resolution models, which could be applicable to near surface imaging projects. These applications could have a crucial role in the production of clean energy, such as imaging the shallow subsurface for wind farm foundations.”
