About the University of South Wales

The University of South Wales (USW) is one of Britain’s most exciting and ambitious universities. Innovative, thriving and sustainable, we work to build better futures for our students, our communities and our partners economically, socially and culturally.

We have five campuses across three locations (Cardiff, Newport, Pontypridd) but we’re one university. Our campuses are designed to work together. You can travel from one to the other with ease, making living and studying an interchangeable option. All our campuses are easily reached by road, rail and air, with an international airport in Cardiff.

At USW, we are:

  • Ambitious for our students and staff, and dedicated to making a positive impact
  • Focused on inclusion, enterprise and growth
  • A trusted partner for long-term mutual benefit and success
  • An innovative creator of knowledge and solutions for the future
  • Proud to be anchored in south Wales with global reach

USW places engagement, collaboration, and partnership working at the heart of everything we do, working alongside business, industry, and the social economy, to address identified needs and achieve the best outcomes for individual learners and organisations. We work in collaboration with industry, researching and innovating to tackle some of the biggest global challenges, from energy and health to security and sustainability.

USW is a vocationally-focused university, preparing students to support key industries now, and in the future. Employers work closely with USW to co-create a curriculum that supports their future needs. This provides them with a skilled and relevant workforce that they can rely on with a large pipeline of graduates coming out of USW and our partner institutions each year. We are generating the workforce that employers tell us they want and need.

Join a supportive community At USW you’ll be part of a supportive environment for studying and living, where new students quickly feel at home. You'll find people just like you, who share your interests, beliefs, and motivations. If you join a society or sports club at USW, you’ll meet lots of new people and get involved in all sorts of activities, including demonstrations and day trips. Whatever you’re interested in, you can meet like-minded people or discover something new. When choosing your accommodation, you could live in the vibrant creativity of Cardiff… the start-up spark of Newport… the rugged nature surrounding Pontypridd, Glyntaff and Treforest… and everything in between. We have three locations but are one University. Every campus is well connected by public transport, and within 20 minutes you could find yourself relaxing on the beach at Barry Island or climbing the Brecon Beacons.

Postgraduate qualifications are available at different levels, from Postgraduate Certificates to PhDs. Taught courses involve lectures and seminars followed by a dissertation or project. Postgraduate research degrees involve a supervised in-depth research project in one of our areas of expertise.

Full-time study Choose to study full-time and normally you'll qualify in just a year. Whether you continue straight from your undergraduate course or you’re returning to learning, we will support you. Part-time study Around half our students study part-time and spread their studies over a few years. Our realistic approach to learning means most courses have part-time options. Manage your workload around existing commitments, work or family life. Distance learning Join our many students studying online. Our digital teaching includes online seminars, live lectures, green screen presentations and discussion boards. Impressive e-learning facilities mean you can access information when it suits you.

Funding is a big factor and students will often need to manage their education with personal upkeep. However, financial support is available, including bursaries and scholarships. There are also flexible study options, so you can fund your education by fitting study around your job. If your course is relevant to your job, you could even get support from your employer towards fees or study costs.
