The UCL Cancer Institute opened in 2007 and is located in the Paul O’Gorman Building. The Institute comprises of 5 floors, with 4,500 square metres of specialist laboratory space and infrastructure to support the modern technologies now required for both teaching and research. It will ultimately accommodate over 350 scientists and students investigating aspects of cancer prevention, early detection, basic biology and novel therapeutics.

There are approximately 5 MSc Cancer-related courses running in London and about 16 in the UK. The consolidation and wide ranging expertise at UCL, as well as its collaborations with other UCL Institutes, departments and local hospitals, makes an excellent environment and therefore very attractive to students wanting to undertake the MSc course in Cancer. The achievements, expertise and state-of-the-art facilities attracts many students from both home and abroad.

The Institute is located close to the new University College Hospital (UCH) and the planned Ambulatory Cancer Centre. Such an environment ensures maximum efficiency in bridging the activities of the Institute and those of the NHS relating to cancer treatment, and will facilitate the rapid application of novel technologies and therapeutics to patient care.

The multi-disciplinary environments of UCL, and the cross-disciplinary collaborations, have the potential to enhance greatly our understanding of cancer's molecular and cellular mechanisms. Translational research in the Institute will be underpinned by world-class basic cancer research. A strong interaction with The Wolfson Institute for Biomedical Research (WIBR), which focuses on translational research with a major medicinal chemistry component, will help to achieve these aims.

Researchers in the Cancer Institute have an international reputation for leading basic, translational and clinical cancer research. Areas of expertise include: molecular pathology and diagnostics; signalling pathways in cancer; infectious causes of cancer; biology of leukaemia; stem cell research; designing drugs that interfere with DNA; antibody- directed targeted therapy and early phase clinical trials. The Institute also leads a number of international clinical trials in blood cancers and solid tumours.

The Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis (CASA) is one of the leading forces in the science of cities, generating new knowledge and insights for use in city planning, policy and design and drawing on the latest geospatial methods and ideas in computer-based visualisation and modelling. We are part of The Bartlett: UCL's global faculty of the built environment.

The Centre for European Studies at UCL is unique in offering graduate students the opportunity to investigate Europe in its entirety, from European integration and public policy to European cinema and poetry. UCL alone is in a position to combine such a broad programme of study with immediate and easy access to the unrivalled cultural treasures and library holdings of London. Anthropology is the comparative, evolutionary and historical study of humankind. It is both a theoretical and a field-based discipline. The distinctive research aims and profile of the Department reflect its long-standing commitment to a broad-based conception of Anthropology, combining biological, social and material culture perspectives. It looks to cover, therefore, the entire time-span of the human career, from its origins to the present day. A substantial proportion of the Department’s research activity and outputs are the result of staff collaboration both within and between these groupings.

The breadth and depth of Anthropology at UCL distinguishes our programme from those offered by most other British Universities and our 5* rating in the recent Research Assessment Exercise makes us the top broad based anthropology department in the UK.

UCL Anthropology offers a wide variety of undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes,
an exceptionally wide range of optional courses, has a relatively low staff-student ratio and emphasises tutorial or smallgroup teaching in courses at all levels. The courses offered to students reflecting the wide range of research interests of iUCL Anthropology's academic staff. Students taking courses here come from broad international backgrounds and are able to conduct research around the globe. In addition to our thriving undergraduate student body, the department has around 120 registered graduate students enrolled for research degrees of MRes and MPhil/PhD with over 70 enrolled for the taught Master's programmes.

We are based in a newly renovated building with undergraduate and postgraduate common rooms, a master's computer room, teaching rooms for seminars and tutorials and the Darryl Forde Semianr Room. There is also a pleasant courtyard.

Biochemical Engineering at UCL is an interdisciplinary subject which has as its primary focus the fundamental issues that underpin the translation of biological discoveries, such as new kinds of advanced medicines, into practical outcomes. In this way biochemical engineers can contribute immensely to improving the quality of life. In the next decade and beyond, the contributions of biochemical engineers to the national and international community will be vital not only in the area of new medicines but also for more nutritious foods, novel materials from renewable sources and improved approaches to reducing and dealing with environmental pollution.

The Department of Biochemical Engineering at UCL is the largest university department of its kind in the UK; its graduate degree programmes lead to qualifications which are internationally recognised. Taught Master’s programmes and research study programmes in the department draw on knowledge and methods derived from a range of disciplines, including biochemistry, microbiology and molecular biology as well as the core discipline of biochemical engineering in which the foundation subjects are applied and integrated.

There are close teaching and research links with over 100 scientists and engineers working in other departments at UCL, including Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Computer Science, Physics and Astronomy, Surgery (Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Unit), Electronic and Electrical Engineering and Chemical Engineering, together with experts from other departments throughout the UK and overseas. A collaboration with the London Business School in the establishment of a Science Enterprise Centre now allows the integration of technical and business skills at all levels. Links with industry are exceptionally close, with leading industrialists contributing to teaching and research programmes.

UCL is one of the top UK research universities, named "Sunday Times University of the Year" for 2004. UCL Earth Sciences, founded in 1841, is one of the oldest geology departments in the country. In recent years it has expanded greatly and was rated as excellent in the 1995 HEFCE teaching quality assessment, and designated a level 5 department in the HEFCE 2001 research exercise.

The Department has 27 established academic staff and 16 additional research staff posts. Welcome to the UCL Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering. The Department is one of the leading research-led departments in its subject area, worldwide, and has received one of the top two ratings in every UK Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) carried out to date. It is also the highest RAE rated Electronic Engineering department in London. We continue to push in new directions in both research and teaching, building on our long-established links with industry. We are a major contributor to the newly opened London Centre for Nanotechnology, one of the first Electronic Engineering departments in the UK to introduce Problem Based Learning into our undergraduate courses, and are offering new undergraduate MEng and postgraduate MSc programmes in Electronic Engineering with Nanotechnology.

We are proud of our heritage as the first Electrical Engineering department in the UK and our ethos of constant development and innovation continues a tradition inspired by our first Head of Department, Professor Sir Ambrose Fleming, inventor of the thermionic valve and hence the founder of the discipline of electronics. We offer both three year (BEng) and four year (MEng) undergraduate programmes, which are continually updated and shaped by both industrial and academic requirements, as well as a range of specialist MSc, PhD and Engineering Doctorate programmes.

UCL's History department has a distinguished past, for long reckoned one of the top history departments within the UK. It has been (and is) the home of major historians, among them Professors A. F. Pollard, Sir John Neale, A. Momigliano and Sir John Hale. Today it has 28 permanent academic members of staff, with interests ranging from the fourth millennium BC in the Near East, through the classical Mediterranean world, to the medieval and early modern eras in Britain and Europe to the near present in Britain, Europe, Latin America and the USA. Our Masters programmes form an integral part of all three aims, with students benefitting from outstanding research-led teaching which has direct policy applications. Both the academic staff and the student body is highly international and come from a variety of disciplinary and policy backgrounds. Some students and staff have remained and plan to remain in higher education, others have spent time working in different public or private organizations, either domestic or international, and wish either to return to the world of political practice or to continue in academia. As a result of their experience at the School, students become part of a global network of high-flying academics and policy-makers and pursue a wide range of careers.

Located in the magnificent Rubin Building in one of London’s most beautiful squares, we are entirely geared towards the needs of postgraduate students. We have dedicated computing and teaching facilities for Master’s and PhD students, and a supportive team of administrative staff. Despite having one of the largest politics graduate programmes in the UK, we pride ourselves on offering teaching in small groups by our world class team of academics. Weekly seminars featuring distinguished external speakers form a key part of our teaching programme. The School also holds regular high profile events for policy-makers and others which students may attend.

With a core of 14 political science staff, the School of Public Policy has an impressive research portfolio and teaching programme. The School also collaborates with other sources of expertise in political science across UCL within the Bentham Project; the Centre for European Studies, the School of Slavonic and Eastern European Studies and the Department of Philosophy, as well as other centres of excellence, particularly the Departments of Economics, Laws and Geography and the Medical School. As a consequence, the School can offer a range of multidisciplinary postgraduate programmes led by those at the cutting-edge of research in their individual area of expertise.

All our Masters are recognised by either the British Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) or the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and involve a rigorous training in relevant research methods. While each Master’s programme has specially designed core components, there is a range of optional components open to all students. The School provides its students with an education of the highest level, equipping them for further graduate research or policy-related careers.

The School achieves this objective by:

Political Theory: The history of modern political thought – particularly nationalism, liberalism and republicanism; multiculturalism, toleration, and citizenship; democracy and constitutionalism within and beyond the nation state, professional and public ethics; global justice.

Comparative Politics and Government: Democratisation and democracy promotion, the politics of ethnicity, campaigns and elections.

EU Politics and Public Policy: Decision-making and relations among EU institutions, regulation and delegation, constitutionalisation, lobbying by business and corporate governance, citizenship and democracy.

British Politics: Constitutional and parliamentary reform, devolution, freedom of information and electoral participation; alternative electoral systems, especially within the School’s Constitution Unit.

The UCL Dept of Security and Crime Science is the first university department in the world devoted specifically to reducing crime. It does this through teaching, research, public policy analysis and by the dissemination of evidence-based information on crime reduction.

Our mission is to change crime policy and practice. The Institute plays a pivotal role in bringing together politicians, scientists, designers and those in the front line of fighting crime to examine patterns in crime, and to find practical methods to disrupt these patterns.

The Development Planning Unit conducts world-leading research and postgraduate teaching that helps to build the capacity of national governments, local authorities, NGOs, aid agencies and businesses working towards socially just and sustainable development in the global south. We are part of The Bartlett: UCL's global faculty of the built environment.

The central purpose of the dpu is to strengthen the professional and institutional capacity of governments and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to deal with the wide range of issues that are emerging at all levels. The dpu's multi-disciplinary and multi-national staff offer specialised courses both in London and abroad for the staff of central government departments, local authorities, NGOs and the private sector. These courses are supported by international agencies as well as by national and provincial governments.

We believe in a just world in which men and women are equally able to choose, plan and manage their own lives and communities, and to influence local, national and global development in ways that are economically, socially and environmentally sustainable.

The UCL Division of Psychology and Language Sciences is the largest such department in the country with over 100 academic staff and nearly 1500 students studying at undergraduate and postgraduate level. It was formed in 2008 from the merger of the former Departments of Psychology, Human Communication Science, and Phonetics and Linguistics in order to bring together in a single organization UCL’s research and teaching in the psychological and language sciences.

The Division is part of UCL's Faculty of Life Sciences and this in turn (together with the Faculty of Biomedical Sciences) forms the School of Life and Medical Sciences, one of the largest and strongest concentrations of biomedical research in the world. A major element of the Division’s activity is its undergraduate and graduate teaching. We offer undergraduate BSc programmes in Psychology, Linguistics, and Speech Sciences, as well as an Intercalated BSc programme for medical students. As well as being able to conduct graduate research towards a PhD degree, we offer over a dozen Masters degrees in topics as diverse as decision sciences, language sciences, human-computer interaction, and linguistics, plus professional training courses in clinical psychology, educational psychology, psychotherapy, and speech and language therapy.

Academic staff in the Division are affiliated to one of 8 research sections. These are the Research Departments of Clinical, Educational, and Health Psychology; Cognitive, Perceptual and Brain Sciences;Developmental Science; Language & Communication; Linguistics; Speech, Hearing and Phonetic Science; and the Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience and the UCL Interaction Centre. Our research is funded (about £25 million annually) from sources such as the UK Research Councils, charities, and the European Commission.
