Becky is a freelance theatre director, with a strong career working with different production companies across the UK. She currently works full time, predominantly at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland as a visiting director, as well as on "A Play, A Pie and a Pint" in Glasgow and at Dundee Rep.

"I chose to study at QMU during the pandemic as the course was in my hometown and meant I could access the course easily whilst the theatre industry was dormant."

"I was attracted to the course as I had worked with community groups a little in my work as a theatre director and was interested in refining my skillset in facilitating groups such as this whilst I had the time. The course looked like it covered a variety of topics and would link us up with practitioners specialising in applied theatre in Scotland.

"On the course, I really enjoyed connecting with my fellow classmates. It was coincidentally an all-female group and everyone had different creative practices, which was really lovely. We also got to spend some time working at North Edinburgh Arts Centre which I found beneficial for practical work.

On graduation, I’m now back working full time as a freelance theatre director in Scotland and the UK. I work predominantly at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland as a visiting director, A Play, A Pie and A Pint in Glasgow and am currently working at Dundee Rep.

I have been able to feed in some of the practices I learnt whilst on the course to my work and am keen to do more.

"I had started to think about going back to university, almost six years after finishing my studies. I lived in Glasgow, and at the time, I was looking for a master’s that was near me, which would allow time and opportunities to reflect critically on my previous experiences as well as learning new skills. I looked at various master’s courses, and after talking with some friends who were already on the course at QMU, I started to give it some serious thought. The course offered the right framework to reflect on my previous experiences and learn something new.

"I still live in Glasgow, but I believe studying cultural management in a city like Edinburgh is extremely valuable. Edinburgh and Venice share some of the same challenges posed by the high number of incoming tourists. Having an open space where people can debate and discuss the meaning and role of cultural production ensures that the sector is not only maintained but able to face future challenges.

The highlights of the course have included classes in 'Debates in Cultural Policy': they have helped me to reflect on the research I carried on previously during my studies in Venice. Now, after almost six years, I will be able to revise it and expand some of the topics I addressed at the time. Another highlight is the module in 'Leadership and Governance'. It’s been useful in helping me frame my previous working experiences and to generate new ideas which I am looking forward to putting into practice.

The opportunities to have discussions and work together as a group have been very useful for me too.

I also enjoyed the 'Arts Management in Practice' module. The course structure allows for several visits to cultural organisations based primarily in Glasgow and Edinburgh. After meeting the teams there, and hearing their presentations, we always spend some time to discuss our impressions. For me, these moments of reflection have been invaluable learning tools. Hearing other people's comments as well as share yours, and getting the chance to discuss these opinions, is essential to the development of a critical approach which can lead to new ideas and reflections.

What did you enjoy most about your course?

"The opportunity of having the first-hand experience shared with us from industry professionals, amongst which were represented the Edinburgh International Festival, Festival Theatre, CCA and many more. This chance led me to have a better understanding of the industry and to build new contacts, which is a must in our sector."

How did your lecturers support your learning?

"All lecturers have a wide range of expertise, whether that's a practitioner with first-hand experience or academic background. As stated before, I committed to reading for an MA to learn and polish my skills. It is usual for a student to prefer one module to another, but from my experience, I can say that I have and I still find what I have learnt relevant in so many different ways."

What challenges did you face with the course and/or university life? How did you overcome them?

"Time management is vital! Studying in a foreign country can be overwhelming. Therefore it is crucial to set a set of rules and a timeline to make sure not to lose track. It was essential for me to understand what I wanted from the course and to use that time to have a better understanding of what I aspired to do in the future. Probably that has been the most challenging, and quite frankly you won't solve the mystery. However, my suggestion is to keep those brain cells going - do not be afraid to take on board new opportunities and do not be scared to fail. That is the beauty of being a student."

Do you have any advice for students who might be interested in this course?

"I have three words - learn, explore and innovate"

Why did you choose to study at Queen Margaret University (QMU)?

"This MSc Digital Campaigning and Content Creation course on offer at QMU seems to be one-of-a-kind. The closest I could find when I was looking at course options in this field were the standard communications, public relations or film master degrees. I was already a signed script writer and had begun making my own video content, so I was looking for something that would enhance my credentials and give me a bit more stability while I chased all my mad ideas. Plus, I was also looking to learn how to use the technical equipment used in the field so that I could decide what I should invest in for my own business."

What has been the highlight of your time at QMU?

"I’ve met some really interesting people on the course. I think I’ll be friends with some of them for a long time and might end up working together with them down the track. There is a good mix of people from different backgrounds - some of them are professionals and others are students who have just finished their undergrads. Many of the modules also include students studying other courses at the uni as well, so it was great to meet students from other disciplines."

How have your lecturers supported your learning?

"The lecturers have been fantastic. I personally think that at a Masters level, a lot of the learning is done outside of the classroom, like when you’re out practicing your skills. The lecturers and tutors really go out of their way to facilitate you being able to do the practical stuff, like if I want to use a certain lens or create some kind of effect, they’re always there to guide you. They’re the best technical support around!"

Intro:

Heather graduated from University College Dublin in 2013 with a BSc in Genetics. She continued her interest in biomedical science by undertaking an MSc in Translational Oncology from Trinity College Dublin in 2014.

Following her MSc, Heather decided to work in clinical research as she believed this would be a hands-on way of working in science and healthcare. Heather gained invaluable work experience and knowledge in her two years at a multi-national clinical research organisation. However, she felt that this position highlighted certain aspects of her career goals that were not being fulfilled. Heather’s ideal career would involve daily application of her scientific knowledge, direct patient contact, a diverse workload, the ability to expand her knowledge and advance in her chosen field. Based on this, Heather decided to pursue a career in radiography.

“Chosing to study at QMU was one of the easiest decisions of my career progression. The University is a leading centre of excellence for diagnostic radiography in the UK and the course is one of the few offered at masters’ level.

“Full summers of clinical placement allow students to build practical skills and develop the clinical competencies required for professional accreditation. The course also allows students to complete a four-week clinical placement anywhere in the world, which is a very exciting opportunity. Graduates from the course have excellent employment prospects and are well trained to begin their career as newly qualified radiographers.”

“The workload is challenging but certainly manageable. The lecturers are approachable, supportive and are always willing to help with any areas that that you may be finding challenging.”

“I hoped that the course would allow me to build on my prior knowledge and experience and to develop a career that is interesting, challenging and enjoyable. I see it as both a career change and a career progression. This course in particular is perfect as it allows me to commit full-time for two intense years and progress my career as efficiently as possible.

Before coming to QMU to study for a master's in Accounting & Finance with CIMA, Jack achieved a 1st class BA (Hons) degree in International Hospitality and Tourism Management from Queen Margaret University. After realising that he didn't want to finish his academic journey at an undergraduate level, Jack decided to play to his strengths and pursue a career with a financial edge to coincide with his management background.

Why did you choose to study at QMU and what attracted you to the course?

"I decided to study at QMU because the course was accredited with the Chartered Institute of Management Accounting (CIMA). I also chose the University as I was aware of the Programme Leader's expertise in the field and her reputation for being a great lecturer. "

Why did you choose to study in Edinburgh?

"I wanted to study in Edinburgh as it is a world-leading location in asset management and investment."

What have you most enjoyed about your course? What has been your highlight?

"I enjoyed the broad context of finance and the current business subjects shown in the news and how they are related to finance as this demonstrated the implementation of the theory that we had learned."

Any advice for students who might be interested in this course?

"My advice would be to try and get some financial experience before starting the course and read broadly to prep your understanding of what is happening in the current economic environment."

Before arriving at QMU, Jane had already gained several years’ experience working in Edinburgh Royal Infirmary and Princess Margaret Rose Orthopaedic Hospital, covering accident and emergency, cardio vascular imaging and computerised tomography.

Jane, how did you combine study, work and family life?

“Ten years after qualifying as a Diagnostic Radiographer, my daughter arrived and although I could work part-time, childcare for shifts became difficult. In 2008, I started work on a part-time basis, with no shifts, at the South East of Scotland Breast Screening Service at band 6 and began the PgCert Mammography at QMU.

“In 2009, I had my son, but I enjoyed studying so much I wanted to do more. In 2011, I completed a research module, as well as modules in leadership in healthcare and managing change in healthcare in 2012. In 2013, I started the x-ray guided breast biopsy module and became an advanced practitioner at band 7. I had a real passion and aptitude for performing x-ray guided breast biopsies.

“In 2014, I took on a Principal Radiographer post, also band 7, which involved deputising for the radiology manager, managing annual leave, rotas and servicing. In 2016, I completed my master’s dissertation.

“Discussion with my management team at work about career progression made it clear to me that I wanted to remain in a clinical role but advance if possible to consultant radiographer. In 2016, I completed an image interpretation module.

“When I joined the team at the breast screening service, I didn’t think I would continue studying beyond the postgraduate certificate. However, I enjoyed learning and enjoyed being challenged, so I kept going!

“Some of the studying was self-funded and paid monthly, so it was manageable. The rest was supported by the Breast Screening Service. The team at the Breast screening service are so generous with support, encouragement and advice.”

What have you been doing since graduating from QMU?

“At present I’ve stepped down from the Principal Radiographers role to concentrate on training in ultrasound. Once I’ve completed this course, I hope to apply for a trainee Consultant Radiographer post.

“In my home life I also volunteer for the Scottish Ambulance Service as a Community First Responder and I’m involved with my local community centre stage craft team, decorating the sports hall for events and enjoy mountain biking and skiing.”

"I graduated from QMU with a BA (Hons) Film and Media in 2016. I wanted to pursue postgraduate studies by undertaking a Master's course and I was was interested in an academic career, which would hopefully include a PhD, teaching and researching."

"I’d heard through my academic circles that a Master of Research was a good way to pursue my academic career goal. I chose to continue my studies at QMU - not only because I’d already studied here, but because I’d made so many connections, including fellow students and academic staff, who always encouraged my academic progression with genuine interest and support.

"The MRes allowed me to utilise the research skills I’d gained during my undergraduate degree and build on them to become a more well-rounded academic researcher. I found the workload to be very realistic, even with my teaching commitments, and the pastoral support offered was ample and consistent throughout the year. The course prepared me well for the fast-paced and, at times, isolating life of an academic. Many of the classes we had were in relation to the changing nature of academia itself, including the increasingly accented social media promotion, funding, bursaries, and attending conferences and publishing as early stage researchers. All of this suitably equipped me for the career path I had chosen and I think more institutions could learn something from the way QMU’s MRes is administered.

"When I graduated from the MRes, I began working for an agency which supplies universities with academic support tutors, usually students who have additional support needs such as dyslexia and dyspraxia. Having more free time gave me the chance to work on myself - something I’d regrettably neglected for many years. I started focusing more on my music (I play guitar and I sing), and have since become a drag performer, Rayna Destruction, across numerous venues in Edinburgh, including CC Blooms, Espionage, and The Pond. I’ve also started volunteering with a worldwide HIV activist organisation and I’m planning a trip to New Zealand, as well as considering undertaking a counselling skills course to expand my academic and personal development.
A PhD is still in my future, I’m certain, but right now I’m just trying to make the most of my life and take it as it comes."
