I chose to study at Loughborough as it is renowned for sports related courses and I wanted to give myself the best opportunity for development and career progression - the lecturers and laboratory technicians definitely lived up to my expectations.

My year at Loughborough University has been positively challenging, worthwhile, and fundamental to my personal and professional development. I’m really proud of my hard work and commitment to study - I didn’t expect to achieve distinctions on any work and I managed to receive several!

My research project is about the effect of nitrate supplementation on aerobic exercise in males, females with contraceptive pills, and females without contraceptive pills. The inclusion of females inspired me to choose this project as I think it’s important and necessary to expand research to include women, even though it may be more challenging.

Alongside my master’s degree, I have maintained a part-time job and a social life, as well as taking on some work experience as a sports scientist at Pro Football Support. This experience involved completing field-based physiological testing at football academies across the country as well as helping students at Loughborough Gymnastics with nutrition. Both positions tapped into my degree and knowledge.

It was a real highlight to be able to travel to many different football clubs and network with a range of experienced staff. It helped to give an insight as to what the future might look like for me.

After graduating, I hope to become an applied sports physiologist. My time at Loughborough has helped me to develop knowledge and an understanding of this role. I also understand the experience required to get into this position, which is something which I am continuously gaining.

I opted to study a postgraduate course as I’ve always enjoyed academia and wanted to continue my learning to enhance my career opportunities. The transition to an MSc at Loughborough felt natural and easy. The first few weeks included a lot of contact and explanations to ensure that everyone was caught up with the basic knowledge for the course.

My advice to anyone considering studying a postgraduate programme is to try your best and work hard, utilise the lectures and lecturers around you. Remember that the academics are always happy to help with any questions or anxieties you have whether it’s inside or outside the classroom.

My career progression has significantly improved since starting my degree. As I study part-time, I have been able to secure roles as a WASH Manager, Specialist, Coordinator and Technical Referent in various countries in Africa, such as Sierra Leone, Kenya, South Sudan and Somalia. I have worked with various INGOs, such as Goal Ireland, MSF, the MENTOR Initiative and UNICEF.

The MSc at Loughborough University was everything I had hoped it would be.

The modules were interesting and engaging, the staff were brilliant both at delivering the material and their interaction with students outside of the modules when I had further questions. Having worked as a Manufacturing Engineer with Caterpillar, I was asked when I applied if I really wanted to take on this course as engineers in the past have found it particularly difficult and even dropped out. Knowing I had a deep-rooted passion for mathematics and a tendency to dig my heels in when faced with a challenge, I was certain I wanted to enrol in the course.

Typically on this course, the dissertation is completed with an industrial partner of the University. From the very beginning I had every intention of undertaking a project with Caterpillar. But with the COVID-19 pandemic, this did not turn out to be feasible. I had spoken with my course tutor who suggested taking on a project within the Mathematical Sciences department. My task was to model the way in which droplets that are expelled when we cough or sneeze are projected. The work I completed with my supervisor led to some new findings. Once the dissertation was handed in and marked, we agreed to write up the project and submit it to an academic journal which we have recently found out has been accepted for publication and has in fact been elected a featured article of the journal.

Prior to commencing my study, I completed a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration and subsequently took a break from academia to figure out my interests, determine my desired career path and identify any opportunities for personal growth.

Loughborough was one of my top options since it is regarded as one of the best universities in the UK, and I had always been interested in studying there. The Finance and Management course, which includes both core finance modules and management modules, is what I believe really piqued my interest. I reasoned that this might give me more exposure to both the technical aspects of finance as well as the workings of the business world.

The campus is incredibly stunning, but it's also teeming with extracurricular activities that offer a tonne of chances to improve one's talents and have fun. Plus, Loughborough is a perfect little town in the Midlands, calm and equally enthralling to study and enjoy in.

This experience has been highly valuable for me and I anticipate it will be equally beneficial for you. Loughborough University provides an eclectic mix of opportunities for students to get involved. There are ample opportunities for socialising with friends and participating in extracurricular activities. Participating in societies and attending events, such as those organised by the Union, greatly enhances students' overall enjoyment and quality of life.

I chose Loughborough University for my master's degree as it is ranked among the top 5 universities for construction programmes in the UK. Upon researching, Loughborough stood out for me due to its highly ranked student experience and industry connections. The enormous campus and the attractive location were also a bonus. As an architect, I was always interested in pursuing my master's in low energy and sustainability. The Low Energy Building Services Engineering programme at Loughborough offers industry-driven learning along with CIBSE and Energy Institute accreditations, which is a major reason for choosing this programme.

Loughborough has inspired me to try out new activities and develop new hobbies. I have made new friends and grown as an individual. Being at Loughborough has made me independent and active, and enabled me to gain knowledge and learn extensively about building services, while also teaching me professionalism. A truly wonderful experience.

The MSc in Musculoskeletal Sport Science and Health is packed with all that is needed to start a career as a sports scientist, a sports analyst or a sports medic.

The resources and the reach that the lecturers and the University have is incredible. We also have subject centric guest lectures, by the people who have made great impact in their respective fields.

Access to world-class facilities such as the biomechanics and sport analysis lab and Peter Harrison Centre for Disability Sport, also help to make the whole learning experience one of a kind.

Exciting opportunities
Getting the opportunity to meet and run some lab testing on a GB Paralympic athlete, who led the wheelchair rugby team to the victory in the Tokyo Paralympic 2020, has been by far the best experience so far. To hold the gold medal that they won made the whole experience so great. I’m looking forward to having many such opportunities during the rest of my degree.

Career possibilities
Following graduation, I hope to work in the sports rehabilitation sector. The programme has already enabled me to learn about the incidence, cause and mechanics of a sporting injury, as well as how to get an athlete back in the game using post-injury or post-surgery rehab protocols. I hope to build on this knowledge during the rest of my time at Loughborough.

I have a passion for helping others and having an impact on the lives of those who need support. Through the use of data-driven technologies, positive programmes and initiatives are being developed that I would one day want to be involved in. I want to land myself in a data career whereby I can have an impact.

The skills I am currently learning on the Data Science programme are a real mix of STEM and non-STEM disciplines.

I believe these will equip me with the skills to be a well-rounded candidate for any organisation and I hope I will be able to transfer my skills into any data science related role in the future.

I liked how many optional modules there were for customising my degree, particularly from other areas such as materials and engineering. I had a good supervisor, and this made the project work a lot of fun. The staff were always approachable and willing to share their knowledge in and out of the classroom.

I initially chose Loughborough University due to the amazing sports scholarship opportunity available to international students looking to continue playing whilst studying abroad.

I am from New York City and having played basketball both collegiately and professionally, I was looking to continue the sport I love but also wanted to be prepared once I stopped my playing career. I wanted to transition into the world of sports and Loughborough seemed like the perfect fit.

The academic support is tremendous. The programme is compressed into a year and although that increases how busy they are, I never felt like they were inaccessible. Being able to meet with them as people and not just professors was great. Their individual expertise on the courses they teach is impressive, they provide a wealth of information, that I am very grateful for.

I graduated and did not transition into a traditional sports management job. Then Covid-19 hit, and the sporting world completely shut down. When the world opened again, it was a connection that I made at Loughborough that got me the job interview in the New York City office of IMG.

The most useful thing about the program and something I believe is its greatest asset is how well connected the Sports Management department is and their willingness to put in the extra work to create spaces and events that allow us to connect with their network.

My connection to IMG was curated by a job fair at Loughborough University in 2018. I stayed in touch and now three years later, I am working for the company.

Loughborough opened my eyes to possibilities outside of America. My goal is to remain a professional in the sporting and entertainment sector. To what capacity is yet unknown but I hope to be living in the EU once again and doing what I love.

The highlights of my time at Loughborough have been the friends that I made during the programme, they have truly become family.

I had been searching for a climate change course outside of the United States and after considering other universities, Loughborough had a great combination of social, academic, and athletic benefits.

My academic background starts with college prep at Park Tudor School in Indianapolis, Indiana. I then received an Associates business administration degree at South Plains College in Levelland, Texas. My undergrad concluded with a dual degree in Analytical Economics and Sustainability with a minor in Renewable Energy at University of New Hampshire in Durham, New Hampshire .

The geography department was wonderful. There were plenty of systems available with programs that I had never engaged with prior. The professors were happy to help and highly qualified to lead us through the new program.

As a performance athlete at Loughborough, I was able to find time for my heptathlete training and complete my modules. I biked to my courses and the HIPAC from my flat downtown and was able to enjoy a good mix of lifestyles. I was able to join the athletics club fine and the social atmosphere is very accommodating for all interests.

I chose the MSc Advanced Materials Science and Engineering at Loughborough University because from a young age I’ve always been passionate about energy and sustainability. Materials focuses on learning the basics of how everything around us works today which attracted me to the course. I highly recommend anyone who is interested in this course to apply as it opens doors to many fields of research and industries.

Being an international student
As an international student, at first, I felt overwhelmed as everything in my life changed. However, as I settled in and got used to a ‘new normal', my decision to move to the UK started to pay off. The advice from my lecturers and the positive atmosphere among other students made my time on my course very pleasant and unforgettable. For any international students worried about moving from their home country, be confident in yourself and your abilities and ask questions. I thoroughly enjoyed my time here and have had an unforgettable positive experience.

The support at Loughborough
Loughborough has a great support system. I came from a more general bachelor’s degree and there were times when I needed more help to understand the topics. I found my lecturers and support staff were very approachable and always helped me as much as they could. For example, my lecturers would either sit down with me and go over any topic I needed more help with or gave me advice so that I could do it on my own. I also found that the outstanding equipment in the laboratories played a big role in setting a learning environment where I could thrive.

My projects
During my MSc I carried out two large projects. One was a team-based project where we got to design a device capable of performing torsion and heating at the same time and that was suitable for scanning electron microscopes. The second project was done individually, and I focused mine on analysing the microstructure of a type of tool steel subjected to different heat treatments to improve new processing techniques within additive manufacturing.

The main reason for studying a master's at Loughborough is that I had already studied my undergraduate course here, and thus knew the facilities, town, and lecturers. I was also encouraged by Loughborough’s high ranking in league tables for Creative Writing.

The teaching quality for my MA was generally very good; given the nature of Creative Writing, the lecturers did well at balancing the need to guide our studies with recognising that everyone on the course will be working in their own styles and genres. I also don’t have any complaints about the facilities I used; Martin Hall is a great focal space, and the library had the resources I needed (and if it didn’t, the inter-library loan service meant I was still able to acquire what I needed).

Loughborough University is a culturally diverse university. No matter what your background is, you’ll be able to find your niche!

In my experience it is truly the place to be if you want to be in a challenging yet rewarding environment. The modules will push you to think like a scientist and prepare you for your future endeavours, whether it is industrial work or academia.

I have always been intrigued by chemistry. To me, chemistry is like a secret language, but once you’re able to understand the language, you’ll unlock the secrets to developing advanced technology that can save millions of lives. After completing my degree at the University of California Davis, I wanted to step outside of my comfort zone and pursue a master’s degree in the United Kingdom. I decided to study at Loughborough University because of its great facilities and connections to industry.

The MSc programme at Loughborough University provided me the opportunity to conduct a research project under the supervision of Dr Pooja Goddard and Dr Paul Roach. The project entails using computational chemistry to study the structural changes in collagen protein. I learned how to apply different computational chemistry programs such as OCRA, Avogadro and Gaussian09 to solve theoretical chemistry problems.

Due to COVID-19, the project was moved remotely. However, the staff and faculty from Loughborough University made the transition to remote working easy. Without the support of the staff and faculty from Loughborough University, I would have not had the opportunity to complete this project, let alone win an award for the MSc Project!

The MSc course solidified my understanding of pharmaceutical chemistry and analytical chemistry.

I find the opportunity to participate in a research project extremely valuable. The ability to think critically and communicate effectively are some of the most valuable transferable skills.

I chose to study at Loughborough University for several reasons. Not only was it one of the best universities in the country for sport-related subjects* and performance sport opportunities, but the course also directly met my personal interests and needs.

Additionally, I was instantly attracted to the campus; it had outstanding facilities, a range of halls of residence so near to lectures, training centres and the library. It was very green and safe too.

I fell in love with learning about Sport and Exercise Psychology and specialised in this area in my second and third years of my undergraduate Sport and Exercise Science degree, which led me to apply for the MSc in Sport and Exercise Psychology programme.

I chose to study at Loughborough University because of its reputation for world-class sporting culture and facilities, and it was important for me to learn from the best and immerse myself in this environment. Thankfully, Loughborough also offered the perfect course to develop my interest in the social and political impact of sport around the globe.

Having been involved in sports development projects in Vietnam and Micronesia as a football coach, I have found it useful to gain a better understanding of the theoretical and ideological frameworks that underpin development organisations and funding, as well as how to measure the impact of a successful project.

I was initially apprehensive of returning to academia, eight years after completing my undergraduate degree and knowing I would be studying alongside some of the best academics in the world. However, my personal and module tutors have been incredibly supportive, not only in giving great feedback on my work, but by showing me my experience in sports internationally could be an asset to myself and others on the course.

From my personal experience, the teaching quality at Loughborough is exactly what you would expect from a highly ranked university. All classes were well thought-out with a deep focus on relevant topics pertaining to the specific courses offered, while assignments have always been appropriate and well-tailored to challenge students based on what was taught during lectures. The feedback provided was well-detailed and extensive, providing students with a greater understanding of their strengths as well as areas of improvement.

Graduating from the undergraduate BArch Architecture course at Loughborough provided me with the confidence needed to further trust the lecturers and the School with my postgraduate studies and development.
The teaching quality at Loughborough is great, continuously improving over the years. I appreciate the access to workshop and study spaces on campus. Doing block-release weeks at the London campus for the first year of the MArch has been an excellent opportunity to connect with other postgraduate students here, as well as the staff from the enterprise space. The London campus is a small but lively bubble, and the shops and restaurants near the campus provide you with moments to engage with the wider community.

I’d recommend this course to anyone already working within industry wanting to gain further knowledge and experience in Chemistry. Returning to study whilst working full-time might seem daunting, but this course is flexible enough for you to focus on study, manage your workload and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

During the course I was taught by highly regarded and incredibly experienced practitioners. The breadth of knowledge taught on the course, from injury prevention strategies and psychology to nutrition and sociology, gave a broad understanding of working with athletes as a whole, whilst allowing me to gain an insight into areas I could further develop externally.

The thing that stood was the willingness of the academic staff to help you beyond what is necessary just to pass the course. The staff genuinely care about your development and are willing to go beyond their call of duty to bring out the best in their students. Throughout the course I felt cared for as a human and not just as a student. I think that is something really special that the staff at Loughborough have created.

Excellent communication with my personal tutors at undergraduate and postgraduate level/ other lecturers always willing to help. Furthermore, I have used the CV support at Loughborough to further my chances of getting a job which I have been successful in doing. Lastly, I have used to housing specialist help in second year to look over my house contracts before signing to make sure they were fair.

I have secured a job at the Royal British Legion as ‘Research Officer’ supporting programmes for veterans and the armed forces. My master’s degree undeniably helped me achieve this position by not only giving me the skills and understanding needed for this job, but also providing me with the opportunity to apply for an internship at the APPG for Drones and Modern Conflict. After completing 8 successful months at the internship alongside my master's, both experiences helped me secure a job in policy that I was seeking and hope to develop a career out of after the course ends.

The greatest skill I have developed from the Security MA would be how to write a fully comprehensive and effective policy brief. Many course-works consist of this layout which was extremely helpful as several of the jobs I applied for were policy and research roles where this type of work was mandatory. Furthermore, the MA has helped to successfully develop my time management skills with study, internship, job applications and social time to balance.

My advice to future students would be to apply without hesitation. The MA Security course is great, with fantastic lecturers and a chance to network and gain connections in a field where there are so many interesting employment opportunities.

I chose Loughborough for my master's degree in Construction Project Management because it offered good industry engagement and outstanding rankings, being ranked 1st in the UK for Building according to The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2021.

I have really enjoyed the holistic and human approach by the academic and professional service staff, showing supportiveness and commitment towards the full development of their students. The lecturers on this programme are highly proficient in their respective fields, and they are dedicated to incorporating the latest research to their teaching.

Loughborough is also a brilliant place to live in. The facilities are remarkable, with multiple study areas, a fantastic library, shops, sports facilities, and other social areas, such as the Students' Union. The location is very well connected to the rest of the country, including various airports. The University has been very supportive not only academically, but also socially, physically and mentally, always dedicated to providing the best student experience.

The teaching on the programme has been extraordinary, giving me the knowledge and confidence to start a personal project, which aims to develop a Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DFMA) modular housing prototype for my home country, Colombia. If this is successful, it will enable solutions to build more affordable housing for mid- and low-income families by adapting Building Information Modelling (BIM) construction practices and techniques to a Latin American context.

I was initially attracted to Loughborough due to the vibrancy of the campus life and the diversity of the course content on the BA English programme. This was then reinforced by conversations I had with current students and lecturers on the visit days I attended. I loved my time as an undergraduate at Loughborough, and the experience was a big factor in my decision to come back to study here at postgraduate level. Loughborough has also been ranked as 2nd in the UK for English and Creative Writing this year, which also demonstrates the quality of teaching in the department as well as the love students have for the programmes here. I studied for a BA in English at Loughborough University in 2015, and then completed a Graduate Internship with the Marketing and Advancement Team in 2018. I chose to work for a few years before beginning my MA, which allowed me to take time to develop myself independently as a writer before coming back into postgraduate study with a better understanding of what I wanted to achieve in my work.

I chose to study at Loughborough University because I knew that I wanted to build on the knowledge I amassed during my undergraduate degree in Sport and Exercise Science, whilst keen to put myself in a high-performance environment, surrounded by ambitious and talented coaches.

Loughborough University ticked both of those boxes for me. High-level teaching from experts in their field, coupled with world-leading facilities and fantastic placement opportunities.

I have thoroughly enjoyed the optional modules I have chosen. They are structured as intensive workshops and the material and lectures are very rich and interesting. They cater towards specific research interests, which is exactly what I needed as a young researcher.

I chose to study Construction Project Management with Building Information Modelling (BIM) at Loughborough University for two main reasons. First, Loughborough has one of the oldest construction programmes in the world, and second, Loughborough has been focusing on new digital technologies, such as Building Information Modelling (BIM), for years.

The transition to a new country and university was not as challenging as I imagined. Learning about different cultures has been fantastic as people from all over the world come here to study. Loughborough University provides incredible support for their students, from career advice to mental health help.

Originally I never thought of pursuing a master’s in management as I come from a tech background. I received a computer science degree back in my home country (India) and got a good job as a Data Scientist. Around eight months into the job, I moved internally into product management which usually takes years of experience and you have to come from a master's background, but my company deemed me fit for the role. However, I felt that I needed a master's degree for learning purposes, so started looking for the best courses globally, and that's how I landed at Loughborough.

The reason I applied to the MSc Management at Loughborough is the vast blend of different management fields that the course covers. I also connected with Loughborough alumni to understand the teaching quality, which was reassuring as they told me only positive things and Loughborough itself has a very good reputation in the UK and beyond, while its courses are well credited and help you to improve your employability.

At Loughborough so far, my greatest achievement is being able to be independent and keep a healthy work-life balance. This includes being able to fulfil and enjoy the challenges of my degree but also excelling in my Gymnastics career.

Why I chose to study Biomedical Engineering MSc at Loughborough:

Loughborough University has been my home for the past three years where I obtained my undergraduate degree in Electronic and Electrical Engineering. In my undergraduate degree, I completed a project where I designed a Bio-Impedance analyser which upon research encouraged me to study for a master’s degree to help bridge the gap between the two areas.

The University environment has always felt calm, and the facilities are second to none which is why I decided to pursue my education further for a master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering. I've found the modules in my MSc are diverse and really get you comfortable with the concepts of Biomedical Engineering, especially the sensors and drug delivery modules.

To those that are new to the University, or those looking to continue their post-graduate studies at Loughborough, the student-staff interaction is excellent, and projects make you feel like you are working alongside your supervisors and support teams for a greater goal.

Since graduating from my undergraduate degree, I’d become interested in environmental issues, particularly in conservation and restoration. I’d been volunteering with environmental charities such as the Wildlife Trust and found myself more and more engaged in this area, so wanted to understand whether I could get into a career in it. The range of areas covered on the programme really appealed to me both in terms of my interest and in their ability to enhance my employability. It covers practical skills, such as those needed for river management, alongside software skills in areas such as GIS and geospatial modelling. This has given me a broad understanding of the environmental sector and the range of opportunities within it.

I graduated from my undergraduate degree in BA English in 2016. After graduating, I worked in marketing for a few years and then wanted a change so moved into a role as a Restaurant Manager while I looked into career change opportunities. Having had a break between my studies, I had commitments that meant I needed to work whilst studying, so I chose to study part-time across two years. I was able to find work in the marketing department at the University that fitted in with my studies. I’ve found the skills gained from taking time out to work to be really useful in my studies, such as presenting, interpreting data and report-writing. I’ve also found there are plenty of transferable skills from my undergraduate study, even though it’s in a different area to my MSc.

I wanted to stay local to the midlands and Loughborough’s overall league table rankings and reputation for the subject made it my top choice of the universities I considered. When I looked into the course content, Loughborough offered an interesting programme that combined scientific and practical skills.

My future goal is to combine the computational and simulation skills I gained during my undergraduate studies with the product design, testing, and interaction expertise I developed through my Sports Engineering degree. Since undertaking my master's degree, the horizons of opportunity have expanded significantly. I can now explore and pursue positions across various industries, integrating my comprehensive skill set to contribute effectively across multiple R&D environments.

For anyone considering this course, my advice would be to go for it! The program doesn't exclusively revolve around sports applications; it offers a holistic educational experience.

I chose to study at Loughborough University as I was aware that it is ranked as the number one institution worldwide for sport-related subjects*. I was also aware that the University produces meaningful research and had found out that the module leaders are all well-recognised in their fields.

In addition, I did not find any other MSc that integrated aspects from different fields of sports science to explore musculoskeletal health. The facilities also seemed excellent and the course was just what I was looking for.

The course combines non-regular modules which makes it very interesting. Some are almost clinical, which gives a great insight into how musculoskeletal injuries are approached and treated, as well as the respective rehabilitative processes involved.

Jose
Novel health and biomechanical technologies are also examined, making the collection of data completer and more efficient timewise towards the completion of laboratory studies. The many practical laboratory sessions are of great help, and academic members of staff were always very helpful and supportive throughout my MSc journey. Our class had a variety of international students with different backgrounds such as sport scientists, physiotherapists, medical doctors… so I found it a rich experience to learn from others who had different perspectives on the same topic, depending on their previous experience and education.

Following my graduation, I worked as an R&D researcher in biomechanical technologies, improving the health of different types of population from the elderly to elite athletes. This was achieved by optimising rehabilitation pathways and emphasising musculoskeletal injury prevention. Day-to-day, I had to work with a large and diverse team, composed of professionals such as biomedical engineers, computer engineers, medical doctors, surgeons, physiotherapists and more.

Completing my MSc studies at Loughborough University was a great push towards my professional career as it prepared me very well to overcome any obstacle throughout my academic and work experience.

The skills acquired were of great help. My extended knowledge in the fields of biomechanics, new technologies and the risk of and treatment of sports injuries prepared me very well for the role I was engaging in my company. Luckily for me, some of the tasks learned on the MSc such as motion analysis procedures, were of use during the completion of some projects at my workplace.

I was motivated to continue my studies at postgraduate level at Loughborough to help develop my academic and research skills, as well as to dive deeper on a specific element of Politics and International Relations – Security – which I find fascinating!

After graduating I hope to work in research and policy development to help keep the UK secure from both internal and external threats.

The Security in Global Politics module has been my favourite topic so far, due to its broad scope and the wide variety of lecturers who take part – each talking to you about their specialist field! In the module, the lecture on Hybrid Warfare was the most interesting to me, demonstrating the wide-ranging security implications of a strategy that blends both conventional and political warfare.

The lecturers and tutors on the course have been fantastic! Each of them has a real passion for their specialism and are always on hand to help with whatever questions or queries you might have. Having a dedicated dissertation tutor is also great, as this allows you to work one-to-one with a staff member to help improve and hone your ideas.

Typically, I’ll have around 8-10 hours of lectures and seminars a week, each of which will have a varying amount of required reading to help build your knowledge of that week’s topic. Much of the week will therefore be focused on preparing for these lectures and the coursework that comes with them. After doing my bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, my passion and love towards sustainability and wellbeing encouraged me to do a master’s degree in engineering. Moreover, the programme has exposed me to current up-to-date technology and software that’s used in the industry, which will help me innovate.

With 5 years of work experience in India, I wanted to further improve my education in construction. Looking at universities that offer the latest technical courses in this field, Loughborough University is ranked in the top 10 universities in the UK with outstanding accreditations, and the School has been teaching construction at postgraduate level longer than any other university in the UK.

The well-equipped computer labs have all the latest software you’ll need in the industry. They can be accessed at any time, or you can use remote access facilities, which is really unique. Since I did not have a high-end configuration device to support software related to my academics, the lab facilities available were a huge help to me. The LinkedIn Learning facility, which is free for Loughborough students, also helped me brush up on my technical skills. The lectures are also recorded, meaning I got to access them any time for further guidance during exam season.‌

After studying Geography BA, I wanted to further specify my learning and have always wanted to do climate change studies. Fortunately, the course began at the end of my undergraduate degree and presented with me with a good opportunity to continue my studies at a time where getting job would have been difficult. As well as this, knowing students who were also going from geography to this course and lecturers like Richard, made it an easy decision.

My main motivations behind studying my master's degree were:

I have had an interest in project management since completing my Mechanical Engineering undergraduate degree and starting my job at a construction consultancy firm in Lagos, Nigeria as a Project Engineer. I wanted to find a master’s programme that enhanced my knowledge of project management in the construction industry more specifically, and to learn more about Building Information Modelling (BIM) due to the increasing need for innovative designs and solutions. What attracted me to study in Loughborough was the prestige of its Design School in the UK, especially when it comes to their User Experience master's degree. As someone that’s interested in inclusion in digital products, it really stood out to me how my course had a different approach when it comes to this subject: while other universities have modules around accessibility from a technical perspective, Loughborough had a holistic approach to inclusion that helps students understand beyond the technical elements of it.

I could tell from my bachelor’s degree that I had a greater interest in the manufacturing side of engineering, and one of the logical places to further my education in the subject was Loughborough. The engineering reputation of this University and the fact the course was accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) were the main reasons I picked Loughborough.

I thought that the course and lecturers were brilliant at introducing and giving insights into various aspects of current, but mainly future manufacturing. We were able to see first-hand more specialist equipment within the University’s facilities, such as the Centre for Biological Engineering and Intelligent Automation Centre which helped put perspective to the lectures. During the course, I got to use a 3D printer for the first time and also have a go at programming an industrial robot as part of my research project.

My master’s was really helpful for my career. It helped me identify the general industry I wanted to work in. In particular, the module on lean manufacturing coupled with a trip to the JCB factory really helped me make my mind up at the time.

I believe I was offered a spot on the Graduate Scheme at Jaguar Land Rover largely because this course enabled me to express an understanding and interest in the subject of advanced manufacturing. The Careers Centre on campus also helped me prepare well for the assessment centres.

To anyone considering doing a master’s in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering and Management, I would say that the course is worth doing because the subjects studied are very relevant to challenges faced in engineering today. I look back at modules like Sustainable Development and with virtually all companies making ‘Net Zero’ pledges, there is definitely a part for qualified engineers to play.

I chose Loughborough University to pursue my master’s degree for their renowned design school. I thought it was a fantastic opportunity to expand my horizons and experience the UK, as I’d never been to Europe before, so I took the leap!

The course provided us with an abundance of practical methodologies and learning materials. The course also equipped me with the right mindset as well. We were encouraged to think beyond the brief. For example, why is this concept meaningful, what impact did it have, etc.

We also had the opportunity to work with industry as part of a coursework task. It was great to be able to get a glimpse of what it was like to collaborate with large corporations.

The internship that was offered alongside my degree allows me to work amongst world-class athletes and coaches, which is an opportunity I do not think you would get at other universities. I also chose to study my MSc at Loughborough as I did my undergraduate degree here and just really liked the community and general vibe you get around the University, especially revolving around sports.

Loughborough University is one of the best engineering universities in the UK. Having completed my undergraduate here in Chemical Engineering, I experienced first-hand the high level of teaching as well as the opportunity to carry out various design projects. I also worked in the Loughborough Materials Characterisation Centre which is an industry-leading laboratory with complex machinery. For these reasons, Loughborough felt like the perfect place to continue my studies in the MSc Advanced Materials Science and Engineering course.

The course is great at ensuring you develop a fundamental foundation of knowledge that is transferrable to a range of sectors including the Aerospace, Construction and Biomedical industries. The modules on the course cover the core concepts of Materials but also offer option modules that meant I could specialise in my fields of interest, nanomaterials and composites.

Teaching and facilities
The teaching at Loughborough is of very high quality and lecturers are specialised in different areas of my respective field. They are always happy to take time out of their day to help me if there was an area of the module I was struggling with. They are all very active online which meant they were easy to reach and helped resolve my issues quickly.

There are numerous laboratories developed for a range of materials such as metals, polymers and ceramics where I could apply what I had learnt in my lectures to a practical setting. There is also an online teaching system where you can find all your lecture notes and watch back lectures at any time which assisted me significantly during the course.

I recommend attending as many classes as possible during semesters because the lecturers tend to give valuable information during classes, and they are more intimate so any issues you may have can be solved during these sessions.

I would advise anyone thinking about joining this university to study Analytical Chemistry to take the opportunity and enjoy it. It is an excellent, versatile university with fantastic staff and great facilities. I would also recommend deciding on your project ideas and researching avenues as soon as the options come out, so you can give yourself the best chance of optimising your skills.

I aim to become a sustainability consultant within the built environment as I want to make an impact and create a better and more environmentally conscious world around us. The modules taught on the programme have enabled me to understand the reality of the professional built environment and what can be done to make it more sustainable. I have been introduced to relevant software and guidelines, and the modules have been incredibly varied to expose me to different areas within the industry.

Having studied at Loughborough for my undergraduate degree, I was able to see exactly what the University offers and gauge how well I fitted into the University’s environment and systems. The Creative Arts department offers incredible facilities only to be seconded by the staff that work there. For me, the University had what I needed most; the time and space to hone my skills and the support and encouragement to help guide my way in doing so.

Teaching, and especially supervision in MA courses, is key in bridging the undergraduate experience with becoming an independent researcher and meeting professional standards in workflow and outcome. The structure of the course and intended learning outcomes reflect the importance of these preparations and are orientated to strengthen and assess research related activities, and the professionalism of art and graphic based artefacts. Without this course, the levels of confidence, independence and self-reliance demanded by the PhD could have come as an overwhelming and destabilising shock.

The course was instrumental in sharpening social, hard, and soft skills. It can be frustrating seeking a greater level of skill yet struggling to see it manifest. I was reminded that patience is the sustaining force, not only to continuously seek improvement, but accept its evidence is often deferred. My understanding of people’s backgrounds was broadened as my course enjoyed a great level of diversity with international students and a greater mix of professional experiences than on my undergraduate course. The most-noteworthy development, however, was of my animation and illustrative ability and knowledge which completely, and very fortunately, changed the trajectory of where I thought my life might head.

I chose to study Advanced Chemical Engineering because even as a child I have always been passionate about the subject and wanted to explore more in the field. The modules provided a good insight into the work going on in industry and the new technologies that are used. There are a lot of application-based modules which help you develop various skills such as product analysis and optimisation. They are practical sessions where I can put theory into practice, for example, I gained experience in handling reactors that produce bulk quantity which will advantage me in the world of work.
Studying at Loughborough has taught me the importance of time management which is very important for the overall development of every individual. The teaching quality is great with a wide variety of technologies to use, such as Igloo, an interactive learning facility that uses software to create simulations of real-life engineering scenarios. The professors are always there to help me out, not only with problems related to my studies but also with any other problem I have faced in my personal life. They’ve been very supportive from the day I arrived, ensuring that I was settled and ready to make the most out of my course.
The Advanced Chemical Engineering course has given me a good idea about the technical and managerial skills required in industry and I am looking forward to starting my career in the research and development team within the Chemical Engineering industry.

One thing that I found moving to the UK and studying at Loughborough is the differences in education styles. Coming from a country that holds a strict and traditional education system, I have really liked the independence that studying at Loughborough has given me.

Why I chose to study Biomedical Engineering MSc at Loughborough:

When I was researching Universities to study my postgraduate at, I found Loughborough was ranked in the top 10 in most of the league tables which appealed to me because studying at such a University will give a large scope and rewarding environment to build a career.

My main piece of advice to other international students is to get ready for bigger and better opportunities, you may face several difficulties but it is worth it.

The facilities here are good and the staff are full of enthusiasm, I even feel that the technologies are as well developed and advanced as much as those in industry.

My project supervisor has been able to assist me with any queries about my project or any other modules. All my lecturers have been approachable and respond almost instantly to any questions I have emailed them with.

I chose to study Exercise as Medicine because it focuses on combining the areas of clinical exercise physiology and working in public health.

After meeting the head of the course, when I initially visited, I knew Loughborough was where I wanted to study as I felt I would enjoy being part of the Loughborough University community due to its very welcoming atmosphere.

I also chose this course due to it being taught by the leading experts in their field.

The aspects of the course that I have found particularly useful are being able to use what I have learned in lectures and applying health measurement skills in a practical setting with my peers in one of the top exercise and health facilities in the country. In addition, I have had the opportunity to refine my skills in working with patients to provide optimum testing and care.

I consider myself to be very privileged having the opportunity to work with, and be taught by, leading academics in their specialist fields. I feel that they always make themselves available to all students at any time, whatever the issue.

I have received academic support for my dyslexia in the form of a reader and extra time in exams, which I feel so far has helped me immensely during my time at Loughborough.

Moreover, the library, with its helpful staff and extensive collection of books and journals, has aided my learning by providing all the key and further readings for my course as well as being the perfect study space.

I have also had the opportunity to use top class sporting facilities as well as, even during the pandemic, learning to play the drums from an ex-Loughborough graduate. I have also made so many lovely new friends on my course who I will, hopefully, continue to work with in the future.

My advice to anyone considering studying at Loughborough University is to seize the opportunity with enthusiasm. The campus is not only beautiful but also brimming with a plethora of extracurricular activities that provide ample opportunities for skill development and personal enjoyment. I opted to pursue an MSc in Management because this programme offered a versatile and promising career path. It presented me with opportunities to explore various professional avenues within the realm of management. Additionally, there are plenty of sporting facilities and societies that have been very helpful in expanding my social life, making a healthy study and life balance.

Loughborough’s strong dedication to the automotive industry has been the main attraction point of my decision to study MSc Automotive Engineering at the University. This dedication can be seen through the amount of research and future-driven modules that are conducted inside the department, such as fuel-cell and battery technology. The department also has exquisite facilities that help massively with my studies, such as the laboratory activities using engine dynamometer and battery testing abilities. Most importantly, there is a study trip to MIRA proving ground, where students can design a specific driving test scenario to be carried out to collect real-world datapoints which will be used for a thorough analysis study. This experience is very valuable towards my progression as an engineer.

I also did an Automotive Engineering BEng DIS course at Loughborough University, graduating in 2020.

Before undertaking my MA, I was a student at Queen Elizabeth’s High School in Gainsborough. I was attracted to the ethos of Loughborough – everyone I had spoken to had stressed the fact that it is one of the best universities in the country for student experience, something that I was drawn towards considering I preferred the campus university setup, as opposed to the city university setup. I was also massively attracted to the sporting opportunities presented by Loughborough, knowing that I would be able to train in facilities suited for international-level competitors, and that these facilities were on my doorstep – this inspired me because I train nearly every day, so having well-priced sporting facilities within walking distance massively swayed my favour towards Loughborough.

Now studying here, I enjoy working in an environment where everyone has a similar interest (in my case creative writing), but everyone is unique and working towards their own goals to suit their own interests (mine being experimenting in different styles of poetry and testing the boundaries of poetry).

I decided to explore the option of studying a master’s in physics and I have achieved more than I ever could imagine and obtained a distinction in my master’s. As I sat in the lectures, I found the interest blossom and grow along with the challenge which I had been seeking in my previous job.

Loughborough University’s reputation in sport is what drew me in. Considering that I wanted to pursue a career in sport for development after working for a while in finance, my strategy was to be associated with the best Higher Education Institution in England for sport related subjects.

I have been greatly inspired by the work that lecturers on the programme have done. Even after graduating, I am still in contact with some who constantly provide guidance and support. I found the modules on Research Methods and Sport Policy, Governance and Law very useful. I have continuously applied concepts and theories from these modules in my work.

I chose to study Data Science because I want to be a renowned data and business analyst. Before studying my master's I was a Managing Director of a company in my country Nigeria.

Studying with WEDC has helped me become more confident in exchanges with water and environmental engineers 'on the ground', which has enriched the quality of rural water and sanitation projects I have managed. My increased professional knowledge on water and environmental management has been recognized and valued by employers and led to interesting job opportunities.

My favourite part of the masters’ programme would be the topics and modules covered, which make me feel as though I am where I am supposed to be! For me, the overall quality of the teaching plays a key role in keeping students interested and invested in what they study, and Loughborough fulfils that promise! They are always happy to help and give invaluable advice.

Our assignments are varied and include various skills that are common in the workplace (ranging from producing independent research skills, class presentations & consultancy reports). Secondly, our lectures cover content that is relevant to today’s work environment. The careers service is there to provide tailored career advice for a wide range of things, such as CV building, interview preparation and activities we can join at university). I have found these to be invaluable. Furthermore, Loughborough offers access to this careers service after you graduate.

I enjoy the different opportunities the university offers to students such as the career service, sports clubs, student roles and LSU Enterprises’ schemes all give a big employability boost! Compared to other universities, Loughborough university does a great job of promoting a healthy lifestyle and pushes its students to achieve their potential in a safe and encouraging environment. All in all, Loughborough has helped me grow as a person and has given me the tools I need to confidently enter the world of work!

As the number one university in the world for sports-related subjects, prestige played a big part in my decision to choose Loughborough. I also work at the University, which makes it convenient.

Applying new knowledge
The degree programme has been extremely useful, from physiology and understanding how things work to immunity. Most of all, I am able to apply the theory I have learnt in my job as a Performance Chef at the Elite Athlete Centre (EAC), where I come face to face with elite athletes from various disciplines.

I work at the EAC which is world-class and have been involved in the run-up to several major sporting events with the ECB, several National Governing Bodies in the lead up to Tokyo 2020 and soon the Commonwealth Games. Without the facilities here on campus we would not be able to attract the elite sport we do, so it all helps create this holistic environment that is conducive to performance and training.

The academic support and expertise available have helped a lot during the programme. I am very busy with work so the ability to log in online to lectures has been invaluable. Knowing the lecturers are at the forefront of research makes it all the more relevant.

Career possibilities
However, it would be nice to venture into perhaps a Performance Director type role, as by the end of the programme I will understand sport from a food, nutrition and physiology point of view, which is a rare combination. Currently as a chef and nutritionist, which is rare enough, being able to add physiology to my arsenal could open up a few doors.

Advice to other applicants
The advice I would give to someone considering studying this programme is to allow yourself time. If you can do it full-time without any other distractions, that is ideal. If you work full-time and have to spin other plates like I do, then be ready for long days and nights, but the material is so interesting that it will provide the impetus for you to stay motivated.

A few fellow classmates have asked about what it is like in the ‘real world’ and I have said two things: (1) networking is super important and is what will get your foot in the door, and (2) consider working abroad as opportunity is rife; there is more than just football out there.
