You know that kid who always asked “But why?” about everything? Yeah, that was me. It drove my teachers nuts. But honestly, that curiosity never left. It just found a home in philosophy. During my undergraduate studies, I took a philosophy course. There, I discovered that this discipline does something rare: it slows you down in a good way. It makes you question assumptions you didn’t even realise you believed and helps you think clearly when things get messy. That’s when I fell in love.

When I found out that the master’s in Philosophy at the University of Tartu had updated its curriculum to make the programme more practical, I was thrilled. While I’d nursed an interest in the field for some time, most programmes leaned way too much on theory. Seeing that Tartu’s version connected philosophical enquiry to real-world application, that sold it for me. After all, I’ve always believed that clear thinking is where every practical solution begins. I chose this programme to help me become someone who can navigate complexity without losing clarity or focus. Someone who can listen deeply, think critically, and contribute ideas that make a difference in real life. And as I learn, I hope to put the insights into action, in the decisions I make, the work I do, and the problems I try to solve.

After five years in the corporate world, I realised that to make a truly lasting impact, I needed to develop deeper expertise in my field. My fascination with data and business analytics inspired me to pursue a master’s that combines these interests. When exploring universities, the University of Tartu immediately stood out for its strong academic reputation and impressive rankings. The Innovation and Technology Management programme felt like a perfect fit; it blends management, innovation, and entrepreneurship, which are key areas I’m eager to master. My journey to Estonia was not an impulsive decision; it evolved over several years. Since first learning about this remarkable country, I’ve been fascinated by its old towns, scenic beauty, and advanced digital society. Estonia strikes a perfect balance between tradition and innovation, and it seems like an ideal place for someone like me who values both independence and creativity. Studying abroad offers a chance to immerse myself in a new culture and explore diverse perspectives, and Estonia perfectly aligns with that goal. It’s also an affordable and student-friendly country, which makes it even more appealing.

What excites me most is Estonia’s vibrant startup ecosystem. I’m confident that, alongside a world-class education, I’ll have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience through internships that will further enrich my learning. And as for the cold winters!! Well, I’m sure I’ll get used to them!

This programme spoke to my desire to further develop my academic and theoretical understanding of cultural heritage. I was particularly drawn to its hybrid nature, incorporating elements of both intangible living heritage and applied heritage in the fields of craft. As an artist and hands-on maker myself, the appeal of combining my shared interests across archiving, history, museums, education, and making made this master's programme an obvious choice.

As a dual citizen, moving to Estonia was easier than relocating to other countries. As my proposed thesis focuses on the Estonian diaspora, basing my education in Estonia rather than Australia was a logical step as it allows access to both language resources and institutions, and the closer geographic proximity to other countries was an important part of the decision-making process.

The courses offered in the master's programme in Software Engineering provide practical knowledge that aligns with real-world industry practices. This makes it easier to transition into the job market after graduation. Additionally, this programme perfectly matches my educational background and work experience. The professors teach theoretical concepts and share real-world industry insights, which are incredibly valuable. The balance of theory and hands-on learning in this programme ensures that I can develop the skills needed to work effectively in the tech industry.

Estonia is well known for its strong IT sector, but beyond that, it also offers a fantastic environment that I truly appreciate. The country is surrounded by nature, which I love, and the peaceful atmosphere here makes it a great place to study and live. I enjoy the fresh air, the beautiful weather, and the overall vibe of Tartu. The student-friendly environment and digital advancements make Estonia a perfect place for academic and personal growth.
