It has a long history as an intellectual and cultural hub and is now home to a campus of the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, as well as Nuremberg Tech (Technische Hochschule Nürnberg), a university of applied sciences.
As an important centre for the German Renaissance in the 16th century, Nuremberg has a proud legacy of contributing to German culture and ideas.
The city was an important hub for early printing and publication in Germany (issuing the works of Nicolas Copernicus, amongst others). Nuremberg was the birthplace of renowned Renaissance artist Albrecht Dürer, and his half-timbered home is a popular attraction to this day.
Nuremberg was also famous across Europe for its fine craftsmanship and artisanal manufacturing, going on to become one of the most important regional centres of the German Industrial Revolution.
Postgraduate students in Nuremberg enjoy life in a city with a proud intellectual and cultural heritage. The city has a unique look and feel, overlooked by three castles and featuring many historic churches and fine examples of Baroque architecture.
Internationally, Nuremberg is particularly famous for its Christkindlesmarkt: a traditional Christmas Market specialising in hand-crafted goods and seasonal cuisine. Other popular attractions include the Deutsche Bahn Museum, a compelling look at the heritage of the German rail network.
The oldest university in Nuremberg is the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, part of which is situated in Nuremberg itself and the other part in nearby Erlangen. Founded in 1742, the university is now particularly renowned for research in Engineering, Computer Sciences and other Technology-related disciplines.
