Aachen is Germany’s westernmost city, located close to the borders with Belgium and the Netherlands. Having been an important political and religious centre, Aachen is now a major hub for engineering research, advanced manufacture and related high-tech industries. This expertise is supported by the city’s four universities, with nearly 60,000 students between them.
As a popular university city, it’s no surprise that Aachen caters to a vibrant nightlife. In fact, the city can claim to have housed the first ever discotheque and the first ever DJ (a combination that makes sense, when you think about it). Aachen also boasts historic theatres and concert halls and is renowned as a hub for German black metal – so there’s something for everyone, musically speaking.
Settlement at Aachen dates from the Roman period, but the city really came to prominence as the ninth-century seat of the emperor Charlemagne. Charlemagne’s actual seat – or, rather, his throne – remains at the Palatine Chapel in Aachen Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Another of Aachen’s most remarkable features is also one of its oldest: the city takes its name from the nearby hot mineral springs (Latin Aquae) that have offered rest and relaxation to Roman soldiers, Frankish emperors and modern tourists. As a Masters student you’ll have the chance to decide how much they help ease essay and exam pressure.
Rail travel from Aachen to neighbouring Belgium and the Netherlands is easy. Be aware though: the Dutch refer to the city as Aken and the Belgians (and French) as Aix la Chappelle. Make sure you get the right train home(!).
As a well-established and attractive student city, Aachen offers a range of accommodation options. However, that same popularity means it’s worth looking early. Halls of residence are managed by the city’s universities as well as the local Protestant Student Organisation and Catholic University Community.
Aachen’s largest university is RWTH Aachen: a leading German research institution, specialising in technological subjects (its full name, Rhineland-Westphalian Technical University, is a bit of a giveaway). Its campus also boasts one of Europe’s largest university hospitals.
Other local universities include FH Aachen, a university of applied sciences (Fachhochschule) also focussing on engineering, construction and related subjects; the Catholic University of Applied Sciences (you may spot a theme here); and a campus of the Cologne University of Music (HochSchule fur Musik und Tanz Koln) - Europe's largest musical academy.
Together these institutions welcome large numbers of international students (around a quarter of enrolments at RWTH Aachen are from outside Germany).
As one of Germany’s premier technological and manufacture hubs, Aachen offers work for talented Masters graduates from its universities (particularly as those universities specialise in technical subjects). In particular, the city is a centre for electric vehicle design and manufacture.
