About the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience

From its earliest years, the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN) has been fundamentally changing and shaping how we understand, prevent and treat mental illness and other conditions that affect the brain. The legacy, ethos and drive of the IoPPN has ensured its position at the forefront of mental health care, redefining mental illness, its treatment and its place in society.

At the IoPPN, our staff and students work to transform care for people who are affected by mental health and neurological conditions, through world-class research, education and training, and to serve our communities locally and globally. We are at the forefront of global mental health research and through our partnerships foster research and training in policy, prevention, treatment and care around the world.

In the 2021 Research Excellence Framework, 90% of research at the IoPPN was deemed ‘world leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’. World-leading research from the IoPPN has made, and continues to make, an impact on how we understand, prevent and treat mental illness, neurological conditions and other conditions that affect the brain.

Located at both the Denmark Hill and Guy's campuses, we have a rich history of pioneering research, enhancing patient care, influencing policy change, raising awareness of conditions affecting the brain or sharing knowledge through education.

Study of the mind and human brain is one of the most exciting and important areas of advancing medical science, and making a difference is at the heart of what we do.
