This programme is designed for students who wish to specialise in performance while studying for an academic degree. Students have the unique opportunity to develop performance in specific Asian and African music traditions to professional standard. They acquire expert knowledge about performance and the geographical or stylistic region of their performance specialism.

The performance component of the programme, in which students choose an Asian or African performance tradition, includes practice-based research. Students study the music of a particular region alongside performance theory training. Through a range of optional courses they pursue additional interests as well.

The programme is particularly suited to performing musicians who wish to deepen and broaden their theoretical perspectives and musical horizons. Many former students have found their performance careers enhanced, while others have gone on to engage with their performance from more critical, academic perspectives, including MPhil/PhD research.

Structure

Students are required to take 4 units (one unit courses being two-terms in duration, while half unit courses are taught in one term only). In addition to these formal elements, students may attend postgraduate and public seminars and may also participate in performance ensemble classes and other activities.

Course Detail:
The formal elements of the MMus Performance programme are:

- Performance Theory (half unit)
The compulsory core course; part-time students must normally take this in year 1.

- Performance (full unit)
Performance lessons in a vocal or instrumental tradition from their selected region. Examined by a public recital in May-June (for part-time students: in May-June of year 1) and by coursework.

- Performance as Research (full unit)
Further study of the same tradition as under 3 above, but with a more specific research focus. Examined by a public recital in September (for part-time students: in September of the final year) and by coursework.

Teaching & Learning

The Department of Music has been highly rated for teaching and research in all recent assessment exercises, and is regularly ranked amongst the top Music departments in the UK in Good University Guides.

Music students have access to the large Main Library of the School which holds numerous books, journals and recordings relevant to the study of ethnomusicology and world music, as well as the nearby British Library Sound Archive and other London libraries and museums.

The SOAS Library holds copies of standard reference works on music, such as the current edition of the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians. The Grove dictionary and the RILM database can also be accessed on line from computer terminals in the Library or elsewhere on the SOAS network. Listening facilities are provided in the Library, and most CDs are available on short loan. Among special items in the Department’s collections are:

- field recordings, films and slides
- a large working collection of musical instruments from Asia and Africa
- extensive staff collections relating to specific research interests

Performance

The Convenor will communicate by email and through meetings with all students taking Performance or Performance as Research, and must be approached for official approval of your choice of performance tradition and teacher. Such approval is signalled by the
Convenor’s signature on the Department’s standard “Performance study application form”, available from the Faculty office and online. No lessons should be taken until this form has been signed.

The staff member most closely related to your chosen tradition acts as a Sub-convenor and should be your first point of contact for any matters pertaining to the specific tradition you are studying. Convenor and Sub-convenor will liaise as necessary.

The Department will not support training in “Western” vocal or instrumental traditions. Subsidy towards the cost of lessons: The Department will pay for approved external tuition, up to a maximum amount agreed at the start of the session (currently £500 for Performance and £300 for Performance as Research). Please be aware that the cost of regular performance lessons might exceed these amounts; any excess must be paid by the student.

Claims for reimbursement must be submitted using the standard Music Performance Lesson Reimbursement Form available from the convenor, accompanied by a signed receipt or invoice from the teacher. Claims cannot be accepted after the examination. The student is also responsible for arranging regular lesson times, negotiating lesson fees, and obtaining access to any necessary instrument. You will receive an Information Sheet for External Teachers, describing payment procedures, the teacher’s obligations, and so forth; you should read through this together with your teacher at the earliest opportunity.

Employment

A postgraduate degree in Music Performance from SOAS gives students improved competency in performance and a better understanding of global music which will enable them to continue in the field of research or engage in related work. Equally, they develop a portfolio of widely transferable skills which employers seek in many professional and creative capacities including interpersonal skills, communication skills, focus, team work, passion and dedication. The graduate music program is small, and students receive personal attention from faculty, as well as quality performance opportunities.

Our opera program boasts a professional affiliation with the Tri-Cities Opera (TCO). Opera students are members of the TCO Resident Artist Training Program, where they gain professional experience while completing their studies. Our graduates have gone on to perform in major opera houses around the world.

This course allows students to specialise in Solo Performance with further training in up to three complimentary areas.

The programme is divided into two parts: two semesters of taught study (Part I, 120 credits) and a substantial recital prepared over the summer (Part II, 60 credits).

Part 1 is centred on the Principal Subject module (WMM4044, 40 credits) in Solo Performance. It lays the foundations of a Part 2 project, which will result in a major recital. WMP4052 Preparing for the Part 2 project (10 credits) acts as a bridge between Parts 1 and 2.

An additional 40 credits will be gained through submissions in other performance-related fields through either one Major Open Submission (WXM4046, 40 credits) or two Minor Open Submissions (WMP4047 and WMP4048, 20 credits each). These area available in the following subject areas:

Historical Performance Practice
Historical Musicology
Techniques of Vocal/Instrumental Teaching
Performing with Live Electronics.
The core module in musicology will make students acquainted with up-to-date research and creative techniques and methodologies.

Students will receive 42 hours of vocal/instrumental tuition. In other subject areas, teaching is provided through a combination of individual tuition and seminar session in small groups. Within each of the chosen subject areas, students can identify their own projects, for which they will receive expert supervision.

This challenging programme will allow you to expand your repertoire and hone your skills as a performer, while giving you the confidence to apply critical approaches to the study of music and its performance.

You’ll work with our experienced and talented specialist teachers to develop your repertoire. You’ll learn to interpret music sensitively, injecting your own personality without neglecting the historical style of each work. Not only will you perform regularly throughout the year, but you’ll work towards your own recitals and work on your own solo or ensemble project.

To put your performance into context, you’ll also have a choice of optional modules offered across the School of Music. You could study composition, musicology, aesthetics, psychology of music and more to explore how performance can shape and be shaped by other forms of musical research and practice.

Course Content

Core modules that run throughout the year will allow you to develop your performance skills in different contexts. Supported by instrumental or vocal lessons with a specialist teacher, you’ll take part in regular performance classes to develop your repertoire.

As well as focusing on a single concerto, song-cycle or extended work of 20-30 minutes, you’ll prepare for a final recital of 40-50 minutes that you’ll perform near the end of the programme. In addition, you’ll prepare for a solo or ensemble project and reflect on the process of preparing and then giving a performance.

You’ll also have the chance to expand your studies. The core Professional Studies module will build your understanding of research methods in music to equip you with a broader range of skills. The MMus, taught jointly with the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (formerly RSAMD), combines vocal or instrumental study with performance-related academic research and an element of apprenticeship with professional ensembles.

Progression Routes

The programme enables graduates to pursue a professional career in music as instrumentalists, vocalists or composers. In addition to the submission of a final Portfolio of Compositions , all instrumental and vocal composition students take the core course unit Composition Project and the further compulsory taught course unit, Compositional Etudes. Optional course units normally include Contemporary Music Studies , Advanced Orchestration , Fixed Media and Interactive Music , Aesthetics and Analysis of Organised Sound , Historical or Contemporary Performance (subject to audition).

Aims

This programme aims to:
-Enable students to develop compositional techniques and professional skills appropriate to their creative needs.
-Enable students to work with both student and professional performers toward the performance of recently composed prices.
-Develop awareness of aesthetic, analytical and technical issues relating to contemporary Western art music.
-Encourage students to discuss with clarity and conviction issues relating to contemporary music.
-Enable students to compose several works worthy of public performance.
-Equip students with skills appropriate to the development of further postgraduate study on MPhil and PhD programmes.

Career opportunities

Graduates of this programme have pursued successful careers in musical and non-musical fields. Many of them are continuing to achieve success as composers, in some cases receiving professional performances from soloists, ensembles and orchestras all over the world.

Others continue to further study via a PhD before securing an academic position. Some go on to teach in schools or further education, both in the UK and overseas. Other areas of work for which advanced musical training has been directly relevant include arts management and the culture industries, music publishing, music journalism, librarianship, music therapy and performance. Careers outside of music have included accountancy, law, social work and human resources.

The Master of Music in Performance is designed to develop student musicianship and technical expertise through individual study, and through solo, ensemble, and chamber performance opportunities, all under the direction of faculty artists. Music Perfor- mance students can complete their program in three or more semesters during the academic year. Course content
As a vocational training in instrumental or vocal performance skills, in orchestral performance skills, or in skills relevant to a development of musical theatre performance, the Advanced Performance programme is intended as a preparation for employment or further advanced training at postgraduate level.

This one year programme can be taken as either a non credit bearing Advanced Performance Course, or as a Postgraduate Certificate in Performance. All students focus their study on a specialist area of instrumental, vocal, orchestral, or musical theatre work. In particular the programme offers orchestral players an opportunity to engage in a course of study offering significant levels of orchestral rehearsal and performance experience.

Students following the Postgraduate Certificate in Performance will additionally take modules in Performance Portfolio and Lecture Recital.

The MPhil in Music can be taken through three different routes.

MPhil by Thesis

Research topics for MPhil/PhD by thesis may be proposed in any area closely related to the research interests of current members of staff (see staff profiles). Students work independently with regular supervision from their research supervisor, and attend research seminars (normally four each term). Thesis titles from recent years include:

MPhil by Performance

Outstanding performers, working in any area supported by the Department of Music, may propose a programme of research leading to the degree of PhD.

The PhD by Performance offers performers an opportunity to develop original, innovative projects in an area of musical practice, in an academic environment in which creativity and scholarship are equally balanced and in which work can be carried out without the constraints often encountered in the professional world.

Submission is by portfolio, which may be variously constituted, depending on the nature of the agreed research programme. The portfolio will contain up to six discrete performance projects, fully documented and supported by appropriate commentary, bibliography and discography. Alternatively, a portfolio may comprise a single extended public or recorded performance, accompanied by a single original thesis of 45,000 words, or by a portfolio of performances (usually five or more substantial submissions).

Candidates for the MPhil may submit a portfolio of up to four performance projects, fully documented and supported by appropriate commentary, bibliography and discography. Alternatively, a portfolio may comprise a single extended public or recorded performance accompanied by a single original thesis of c. 30,000 words, or by a portfolio of performances (usually three or more substantial submissions).

University regulations require all candidates to register for the degree of MPhil in the first instance; transfer to PhD depends on satisfactory progress in the first year. This decision is taken by the advisory panel during the Spring term of the second year.

Applications will be considered from candidates who hold a relevant university degree or approved equivalent qualification, or who can demonstrate sustained professional experience as a performer and an appropriate level of academic competence.

MPhil by Composition

Composers work independently, under the guidance of an academic supervisor. There are currently seven members of staff at York supervising composition. There are weekly Composition seminars (Tuesdays 4.00-5.30pm) throughout the academic year. Some of these are presented by visiting composers, others by staff or postgraduate students of the department.

The student run Chimera Ensemble provides a regular public platform for high quality performance of student compositions, and other performance opportunities are ofen provided by the resident ensembles, University Chamber Orchestra, and professional orchestras and ensembles in the region.

This unique course combines traditional areas of study, such as history and theory, with newer disciplines including music psychology and ethnomusicology. We have a reputation for research of international quality and play an important role in Sheffield’s thriving cultural life, promoting over 60 concerts a year as well as productions of opera in the University’s theatre. We also have close links with Music in the Round, which brings some of the world’s finest musicians to Sheffield.

About us

Music at Sheffield attracts world-leading academics and musicians working in a wide range of specialist fields. This is reflected in the diversity of the MA programmes we offer, both on campus and by distance learning. Our courses are taught by experts and backed by world-class research. Your career

Our graduates are employed by universities, colleges, concert agencies and music promoters. Many work in education; others are performers in various genres, in the UK and abroad. Some work in recording studios.

Studios and equipment

We have a postgraduate research suite and several studios for advanced compositional work, software development, sound recording, laboratory and field experimentation, transcription, music notation and other research applications. You will have access to scores, books, periodicals, recordings and online resources.

Through a series of graduate study days you will be able to use the tools for digital recording, video and film. We also have excellent practice facilities and collections of historical and world music instruments.

Our team of professional musicians bring performance expertise to the department – including clarinettist Sarah Watts, pianist Inja Davidovic, jazz guitarist Ronan McCullagh and North Indian tabla and santoor performer John Ball.

Funding

University and faculty funding is available each year. The closing date for applications is mid-January. The department has a number of studentships available for our strongest candidates. The closing date for these is the end of April. You can also apply for a small grant to support your postgraduate research project.
