Summary

This course provides industry-relevant and specialist journalism training. Based in one of our multimedia newsrooms, designed to give you the experience of working in a fully functioning and fast-paced environment, you’ll learn how to write different types of stories, design digital content and produce audiovisual journalism.

This MA has a specific emphasis on the practice of journalism and develops the skills you'll need for employment in the journalism or creative industries.

You will learn how to write advanced news and features, gain an understanding of the scope of the laws affecting journalists and develop the editorial, interpersonal and self-management skills needed to work within the media industry. You'll examine the journalism business, have the opportunity to specialise in magazine journalism and study shorthand.

You'll also gain practical skills such as audio and video production and photo editing. In your final term you'll choose between either an academic dissertation or a journalism project route – which allows you to work in a team to produce a magazine.

We have a number of dedicated multimedia newsrooms, fitted with Mac computers, a video suite and a viewing room containing industry-standard software, which are designed to give you the experience of working in a fast-paced environment. You'll be taught by a journalism team who have worked for the Daily Mail, the Guardian, Financial Times, the BBC and Reuters.

Carrying out work placements is an important part of this course and you'll need to complete a minimum of six weeks' industry work experience. Not only will you be putting the skills you've learnt on the course into practice, you'll learn valuable new ones, build a strong CV and make vital industry contacts.

There are visits to journalism and media organisations, such as the BBC, as well as special seminars and workshops held by industry professionals. Roehampton has links with local media organisations such as Haymarket Media Group. We also have a strong relationship with Newsquest, which, among other newspapers and websites, publishes the Wandsworth Guardian. These relationships have led to volunteering opportunities and paid internships for students as junior reporters.

Content

In the autumn term, you will learn about the legal and ethical aspects of journalism, covering concepts such as libel, confidentiality, copyright and privacy. You will also explore media regulation. You will develop your advanced news and feature writing skills, as well as learning how to sub-edit a range of copy for print and online. Plus, you'll also produce your own journalism portfolio.

In the spring term, you'll study social media and data journalism, and explore content creation and the distribution of news via social media. In Multimedia Journalism, you will focus on content production within the digital media. You will gain experience in audio, multimedia and video journalism, as well as developing basic editing and sequencing skills, and an understanding of audio-visual hardware and software.

In the final term, you'll choose between a dissertation and a journalism project. The Journalism Project route will give you an in-depth understanding of the way magazines are organised, developed and produced, as well as an insight into the rapid evolution of magazines into multimedia products. You will get to produce a print and online magazine, replicating as much as possible the conditions, organisation and pace of the production of a real magazine.

We actively encourage all our journalism student to undertake work placements during their studies with us. Many of our students are very pro-active and opt to undertake a placement. Placements are an essential step in developing their career in journalism as they help students put their learning into practice and make contacts in the industry.

Work placements are not formally assessed or arranged as part of the MA Programme but your personal tutor can advise you in suitable organisations to approach that may suit your chosen specialisms.

You will gain practical skills in our state-of-the-art digital television studio, digital editing suites, radio studios and broadcast newsrooms.

In 2014 we completed a £12m development projects for our Journalism facilities. These facilities were developed in consultation with experts from the BBC and ITN, and were praised by the BJTC. Our facilities include:

  • A television studio: enabling simultaneous multi-media broadcast and a major expansion in the number of news and current affairs programmes produced
  • Four radio studios: enabling an increase in output and the potential to explore a permanent radio station
  • Two radio broadcast newsrooms: high-tech facilities that enable you to learn how to produce a radio programme
  • Two digital newsrooms: impressive modern facilities that enable you to learn the skills required to produce newspapers, magazines and websites

Teaching and learning

The International Journalism MA is a professional/practice course with an emphasis on developing practical skills in journalism. The teaching staff are all professional journalists in print, broadcast or online. We focus on "learning by doing" - you cover real stories and produce newspapers, run a radio station, broadcast on the internet, and produce television news programmes and multimedia websites.

During the course, you have opportunities to meet, listen to and question journalists and other people from the media. You are encouraged to reflect on your own experiences as journalists and the ways in which practicing journalists do their jobs by developing an understanding of ethical issues in journalism, the media and international reporting.

You will be treated as a professional journalist throughout the practice-based elements of the course. Learning is intensive and at times teaching hours will resemble those of a full-time job.

Some modules are taught in lecture theatres, such as Global Journalism and Society and Ethics, Rules and Standards, but most are small-group workshops that allow you to develop your journalistic skills and knowledge with the support of our expert academics.

Assessment

Assessment is part of learning, and course assessments vary to reflect the learning being

achieved. They include workshop exercises, studio work, oral presentations, essays, reflections

and production (making journalism products), and different forms (written, oral, visual, aural), as

well as being individual and team-based.

Modules

You will take modules in storytelling and online journalism before specialising in either print, broadcast or online journalism. This choice informs your studies for the rest of the course through to the completion of a final project.

There is a dissertation option if you prefer a more academic route through the course.

You are encouraged to complete an internship, either in the UK or overseas. This must be arranged by you.

Though this course is NOT about presenting on screen or on air, you must be prepared to present your material on camera or mic, and write and direct material for others to perform. Assessments vary from module to module but include coursework, practical work both in groups and individually, a Final Project, a written timed test, and essays.

Modules

All of our Broadcast Journalism MA students must undertake core modules in Ethics, Rules and Standards and a Final Project. As a Broadcast Journalism student you will take a module in Newsgathering for TV and Radio; a module in Newsdays and longer form film-making; and a module in Data Journalism. Teaching hours are between Monday to Friday during working hours, and occasionally outside those times.

Objectives

This hugely successful, well-established course will prepare you for a broad range of magazine scenarios, from writing for a glossy men’s magazine; to researching a story for an online business-to-business publication; to reviewing a play for a national newspaper supplement and much in between.

You'll learn the essential skills of reporting, feature writing, subbing, interviewing, researching, and design and layout. You'll produce print and online magazines, and complete at least seven weeks' work experience.

The course will give you a thorough grounding in print and multimedia journalism. You will develop professional skills in reporting, interviewing, research, feature writing and production (print and online), benefitting from the experience of leading magazine and specialist journalists and around 30 visiting editors, commissioning editors and editorial directors from the UK’s leading publishing houses.

MA Public Relations and Journalism practical skills in both PR and journalism from the outset, with students developing and presenting their own bodies of professional work. The practical aspect of the course will culminate in an optional accredited internship and mandatory professional research project, including live PR work and journalism and, at its end, a critical reflection which will require students to relate their work to wider thinking about these industries.

At the same time the programme provides an in-depth academic examination of the PR industry and journalism, their histories, how they function in the contemporary world and the role they play in international society and economic life – especially in relation to traditional and new media, business and the full range of marketing disciplines.

The MA Photography programme offers an in-depth, creative and socially engaged postgraduate level education in the practices of contemporary photography. You will develop an appreciation of photography as a tool for personal expression, cultural storytelling and political activism. Under the guidance of professional staff you will experience extensive practical workshops and critical seminars in world-class facilities. In addition, you will learn an array of other complimentary skills such as sound, filmmaking and ethnographic fieldwork and be offered chances to work with professional partners here and abroad. The course aims to help you become a flexible multi-skilled, lateral thinker with a critical and vocational awareness of how photography works for a range of destinations and web-based platforms.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT

The course makes use of UCLan's outstanding new facilities available at the Media Factory. We now have industry standard digital cameras suitable for field work and studio work and a digital photography IT suite with large format scanners, exhibition quality digital printing facilities and a suite of Apple Macs with the latest software packages. We have three photography studios which are equipped to a standard that makes them comparable with any modern professional studio. In addition to this we have excellent darkroom facilities with colour and black and white enlargers for 35mm, Medium Format and Large format. Most of the teaching will take place at UCLan but there will also be field based teaching with visits to leading industry organisations.

Your work will be assessed in a number of ways: practical work, field work, presentations, essays, workbooks and a dissertation.

This course sits within the School of Journalism and Media’s postgraduate provision. It has key links with the MA Visual Journalism and the MA Media Innovation offering you a wide arena of approaches and practitioners to consult on professional and personal projects.

The course is delivered through a variety of methods both that are dependent on the required learning that will find you learning not only in a classroom but out in the field. Critically based lectures and seminars will give you a sound grounding in the current thinking about photography and how this impacts on the work of contemporary practitioners working in a politically and socially complex world. Intensive workshop sessions will enable you to attain the relevant skills and to undertake visual problem solving. MA Fashion Journalism is unique in its merging of cultural theory with fashion journalism. It is a multidisciplinary framework for independent study that leads to an original body of written and/or visual work. You can choose to position your aspirations and your work on a spectrum from media journalism to theoretical study, for example: a dissertation on the presentation of fashion on television; a book surveying the fashion industry in Canada; a new concept for a fashion magazine; a cultural analysis of the current position of masculinity in society.

The course aims to develop highly articulate and aware fashion commentators who have sound research ability and strong written and visual communication skills. Cultural theory and journalism strands run in parallel through the first stage of the course. Three of the four pathway units are focused on the practice of journalism, a key feature being visiting speakers from industry.

This means that during the course you will be able to produce a wide range of digital-first work for multi-platform story formats. Your work will be underpinned with academic research, theories and expertise on mobile platforms, and digital interactive communication.

The course delivers industry-level professional expertise in visual communication from photography to cinema journalism, interactive narratives and apps for change.

You’ll be involved in creating content that extends beyond current ideas in multimedia and online productions – our aim is to advance storytelling. We recognise how competitive the job market currently is, therefore this Master's has been created to develop your skills and knowledge in a way that will enhance your career.

The Digital and Interactive Storytelling LAB MA prepares you for a range of industries, present and future, as entrepreneurial content creators, mobile and platform producers, cinema and video journalists, interactive factual narratives, social marketers, and project managers.

The content is structured around a knowledge of platforms and three major fields: cinema (video) journalism, photographic communication and interactive factual narratives, which are seamlessly knitted together into five modules.

Cinema Journalism builds upon videojournalism – a much-misunderstood term that in reality embraces multimedia and the creation of multiple genres of video production in different styles – from one-minute social-media docs, two-minute news, to lengthier docs. Cinema journalism combines a deep understanding of cinema cues and tropes to create compelling immersive content on fast-turn around times whilst mastering an array of tools from different lenses, cameras, drones and mobiles. You can find examples of student work David has previously supervised, as well as read about his work in journals, such as the The Documentary Handbook.

The rethinking of photographic digital communication both in terms of media and content is what drives my research The Image As Storytelling. By engaging the quickly evolving worlds of photography and photojournalism within a digital-first approach, in the LAB you will learn how to engage visual communication to its full potential, and incorporate storytelling as a digital practice for interactive platforms. Through a hands-on, experimental and practice-led approach, you will reconsider today’s shifting visual vocabulary specifically for digital and interactive communication frameworks.

Interactive Factual Narratives range from web-documentary, to games for change, VR and social mobile apps. You’ve likely seen examples of interactive factual narratives with the New York Times Snowfall, and Brett Gaylor’s Do Not Track. You will be given an exhaustive overview to be able to map the territory and position your practice in it. You will be guided through your creative journey with a user-centred workflow that mixes design and software methodologies to prototype and design interactive narratives. You will be challenged by a “what’s next” approach and will be pushed to think further than current trends.

Course structure

The course incorporates an agency media LAB approach to learning through knowledge sharing and project completion which is pragmatic. It underpins problem solving using evolving theories and practice. The goal is the production of digital stories and, or interactive factual narrative. The method is through iteration and collaboration.

Modules on the course are compulsory and follow a schedule towards production of digital and, or interactive projects via an iterative approach. Testing and user experience is taken into consideration at each step of the creative process. You will be encouraged to work in ways that rewards experimenting, building and refining ideas. We expect a mix of cohorts, some yet to enter industry, others looking to bolster their careers or change direction and encourage a wisdom of crowds method in learning – also from one another.

You’ll be encouraged to work collaboratively, opening up your professional expertise, or experiences to the benefit of your course peers. In doing so, you will feel part of a creative community that will support you when needed, and may serve you as a network even after the course has finished.

By the end of the year you should reach a level of expertise to create innovative digital and interactive storytelling artefacts, acquiring a solid knowledge of the field, consolidating a multi-skilled network of people and developing digital prototypes of your ideas. By then your project should be ready to be presented to potential financers and media partners.

This programme has been developed by the Centre for Urban and Community Research to encourage creative interplay between practice and theory. You'll have the chance to consider cutting-edge debates in cultural and social theory in a research setting that actively encourages the development of photographic practice.

The programme offers working photographers, visual artists and media practitioners space to reflect critically on their practice.

It also offers those with a background in sociology, urban and cultural geography, cultural studies or anthropology the opportunity to combine visual forms of representation with standard forms of research techniques in investigating urban life and the physical environments of the city.

As well as these modules, you will complete a Dissertation and Major Visual Project (60 credits).

The Dissertation can comprise two parts: a portfolio and a 5-6,000-word Dissertation, or you may submit a 10-12,000-word written Dissertation. The Dissertation will consist of: an account of the rationale of the photographic project; a critical evaluation of photographic practice and issues of reflectivity and knowledge production. In combination with the written part you will be expected to provide evidence of a sustained and coherent body of photographic work focusing on an aspect of urban culture for assessment. Theories of Literature and Visual Culture

This module is taught across two terms. It provides you with knowledge of a range of historical and modern theoretical approaches to the study of literature and the visual arts. It refines your theoretical understanding and provides you with the methodological tools needed to proceed to PhD research if you so wish. 

Dissertation

You will write a 30-40,000 word dissertation on a subject of your choice, receiving one-to-one support from your supervisor.

Teaching & assessment

Theories of Literature and Visual Culture is assessed by an essay and presentation.

The dissertation is examined by a Visiting Examiner and includes a viva voce.

Your future career

On graduating you will have a proven ability to undertake focused research, improved your written and oral presentation skills, and honed skills in critical analysis. In addition, you will have an understanding and a critical awareness of current problems and/or new insights in literature, film, cultural studies or the visual arts.
