Teaching, learning and assessment

Teaching is delivered face-to-face at our modern campus in Scotland’s capital city of Edinburgh. You are also supported by QMU’s online virtual learning environment. As well as lectures, seminars and workshops, you will also work with live clients, respond to communication briefs, undertake analysis and research, blog, reflect, create materials and content, engage in digital media, work in groups, make presentations and develop proposals.

Teaching hours and attendance

Our carefully designed delivery pattern provides continuous and frequent face-to-face teaching for full time students. Part-time students benefit from a delivery pattern which requires attendance at short intensive blocks and which you can fit alongside other commitments. On many modules you will learn alongside communication and PR practitioners and students. This helps you start your professional network and  develop a deep understanding of the relevance of theory to practice. Our shared community of learners approach also provides access to a busy programme of activities and events offered across our PR programmes. On your 20 day placement (optional module) you’ll gain invaluable professional experience and develop your learning in a work setting.

Modules include: Communication and Digital Skills for Working in PR */ Media and Campaigning/ Critical Reflections on Public Relations/Understanding Research/ Strategic Communication Planning/ Communications Impact on Policy Making/ Strategic Internal Communication in a Digitized World/ Master’s Communication Placement */ Project Students who already work in communication and PR can select from a list of modules, including business focused ones, instead of those marked * above. If you select to do the Master’s  Communication Placement module, you can undertake this with your employer. You can also focus your Project on a topic which is relevant to your professional role. If you already have CIPR Diploma, CIPR Internal Communications Diploma or CIPR Public Affairs Diploma you are awarded credits and exempted from selected modules.

Accreditation of prior learning:

Students who have already been awarded a Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) Diploma receive 45 credits towards the MSc Strategic Communication and Public Relations, exempting them from specified parts of the course. Students who have already been awarded the CIPR Internal Communication Diploma/ CIPR Public Affairs Diploma receive 30 credits exempting them from specified parts of the course.

Careers

As a CIPR accredited course, the MSc Strategic Communication and Public Relations is benchmarked against CIPR career progression requirements. This means there is a clear articulation between the course and developing your career. The programme is designed to provide skills required by adaptable, critically aware, communications workers in the exciting modern communications environment, which requires fluency in the use of strategic storytelling, content production and visual design.

A one-year Master's programme of 60 credits, Strategic Communication is a programme designed for students with different subject backgrounds within the wide field of communication. Bringing together different skills, students develop a critical understanding of, and competence to implement, strategic communication. By strategic communication we mean professional communication aimed at satisfying long-term organisational and community goals.

Strategic Communication is designed to produce skills required in the modern communications environment, which demands flexible critical skills and a mastery of strategic storytelling, content production and visual design. It offers core skills that are transferable across the employment sector: sound research practice; clear and effective writing; critical thinking; a good understanding of design; deep understanding of how to use the web and social media for strategic purposes; and communicating with niche groups/markets.

The programme is comprised of two interrelated strands which run over the two semesters, one oriented to research and critical thinking, the other to building a portfolio of flexible interlocking practical skills. Much of the teaching is based on a flipped classroom method using video lectures, project-based work, individual preparation and tutoring tailored for each student's knowledge and experience.

During the first semester, you will develop an understanding of concepts in strategic communication such as PR, corporate communication, brand management, and political communication. The communications industry is changing in such a way that marketing and PR are increasingly integrated, the use of digital storytelling and moving images grows, and new roles are introduced. The changes require new kinds of thinking and brings at the same time exciting possibilities for those equipped with the knowledge to take advantage.

You will also develop skills in content production. During the first half of the semester, we develop efficient use of language, images, and design. During the second half of the semester we continue with audio and video production along with scriptwriting. In the second semester, students carry out a larger research project that concerns the communication of one or several organisations. There will be classes on research methods and how these should be applied as well as one-to-one supervision for individual projects. During this semester, practical skill development moves on to web-design and online layout, and several skills and modes of communication are integrated in a project.

Throughout the programme, students work individually, in pairs, as well as part of a team both when carrying out research and when doing content production. All skills are assessed formally although important principles for this programme include creative learning through "trial and error", independence and responsibility.

The language of instruction is English and applicants need to be proficient in the English language to be eligible for admission.

This variant of our established MSc Strategic Public Relations & Communication Management course is delivered jointly with our partner Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona, Spain. This course provides students with a solid international perspective on strategic communication and provides an opportunity to study in both Stirling, UK, and Barcelona, Spain.

The MSc Strategic Communication & Public Relations is an interdisciplinary, advanced level course taught by established academics and practitioners. It offers a hands-on approach while at the same time providing you with the theoretical foundations necessary to practise public relations at a managerial level.

You will be offered the opportunity to attend a Public Affairs and Lobbying seminar series in Brussels, which includes visits to the European Parliament, the European Commission as well as specialist industry seminars with leading public affairs and public relations experts in Brussels.

This course is taught completely in English and students will obtain a joint MSc degree from the University of Stirling and Pompeu Fabra University. Students spend the Semester 1 at the University of Stirling and then move to Pompeu Fabra University for Semester 2. Structure and content

Students spend Semester 1 at the University of Stirling and then go to Pompeu Fabra University for Semester 2. Students then can decide to have their dissertation supervision at the University of Stirling or Pompeu Fabra University.

The course covers a range of modules including public relations and communication management theory, strategic public relations planning, public diplomacy and strategic communication, media relations, digital media, public affairs and advocacy, and research methods.

Delivery and assessment

Delivery methods include lecture, workshops and seminars.

The nine-credit Graduate Certificate in Strategic Global Communication is comprised of the first three courses of the MA in Intercultural and International Communication residency. Flexible Admission

Applicants who do not meet the Standard Admission requirements will be considered for Flexible Admission and assessed as follows:
-All applicants must show evidence of having sufficient knowledge, skills and abilities to complete a demanding academic course of study at a master's level and have significant professional communication experience.
-Applicants without an undergraduate degree, but more than three years (90 credits) of relevant post-secondary education, should have at least two years of relevant work experience, preferably in a leadership capacity.
-Applicants with two to three years (60-90 credits) of relevant post-secondary education should have at least five years of relevant international/intercultural work experience in a leadership capacity.
-Applicants with less than two years (60 credits) of relevant post-secondary education should have at least ten years of high-level, professional communication experience in a leadership capacity.

The research project in this masters enables you to focus on a real-world communication challenge and combine different communication research approaches to develop a novel solution. You can draw on research approaches from public relations, expressive arts, communication management, marketing, linguistics, media studies or journalism studies, or create a bespoke research approach that includes supervision from a related discipline such as Maori studies, international relations or evaluation studies. About the program

The Master of Communication (Professional) allows students to further their careers in Communication by equipping them with an appropriate mix of theory and practice suited to industry, culminating with a professional segment comprising a professional portfolio, field project and field project report. It draws on the expertise of Strathclyde’s internationally-renowned media and communications academic staff, including experts in strategic communication, media and communication theory, media ethics and mediated populism. 

What you’ll study

You'll take four core classes covering the theory, history and practice in communication and media, a research skills class and two option classes in communications. You'll also write a 15,000-word dissertation.

The Master in International Communication (MIC) is an ambitious double degree programme for those who aspire to an international career as a communication practitioner in senior managerial or consultancy positions, responsible for the external and internal communication of an organisation.

Four universities across Europe, all specialising in communication and public relations in international professional contexts, have joined forces to create this unique joint programme offering you the full benefit of their collective expertise and international networks. This consortium consists of:

• The Netherlands: Hanze University of Applied Sciences, Groningen
• The United Kingdom: Leeds Beckett University
• Italy: IULM University, Milan
• Lithuania: Vilnius University

The MIC offers you the opportunity to study at two universities and graduate with two Master’s degrees and the Geert Hofstede Consortium certificate. The programme starts each September and consists of three semesters (90 European credits). During the first semester you will study at one of the consortium universities, and for your second semester you will study at one of the other consortium universities. During the third semester, you will write your dissertation under the supervision of these two universities.

How is the career perspective built into the MIC programme? Throughout your study, you will analyse and solve real corporate communication problems provided by companies and governmental and non-governmental organisations. Semester 1: Core Programme (30 European credits)
The first semester introduces you to the full breadth of the profession. What are the roles and responsibilities of the communication professional in an organisation from a strategic perspective? Which main functional areas are there? How does culture influence communication? What is the relationship between the organisation and its international and intercultural environment? You will complete this semester at one of the consortium universities of your choice.

Semester 2: Specialisations (30 European credits)
During the second semester you will complete a number of specialisations from another consortium universities of your choice. The specialisations are, by definition, in tune with what is happening in the professional field and can change according. The specialisations include:

Semester 3: The Graduation Project (30 European credits)
The graduation Project consists of a master’s dissertation and a personal development portfolio. You must demonstrate mastery of those competences required to obtain the title Master in International Communication. You will choose a professional role and analytically solve a problem for an outside client or stakeholders (working in-house or as a consultant). The result of this project will be based on applied research and the use of an appropriate methodology. Every problem requires a solution from an international or intercultural perspective. The dissertation is completed under the supervision of two universities.

MIC graduate profile

As a graduate of the Master in International Communication you will be an interculturally competent communication professional able to work in a global context. You will be able to anticipate changes and develop, implement and manage sustainable and innovative solutions to communication issues. As a graduate, you will have the skills and knowledge needed to work at managerial or consultancy level.

Based on the MIC Alumni Evaluation conducted in 2015, 91.6% of the MIC graduates have found a job within a year after graduating. Graduates have found jobs as Communications manager, Communications consultant, Director of communication and external relations, Image and communications manager, Marketing & communications executive, Content and media manager, Social media research officer, Senior international relations officer, Events officer and Project manager.
