Quantitative and Research Methods evaluates concepts of quantitative methods and the application of specialist statistics to aid decision-making within organisations.

Business Operations – the Quality Management Perspective will give you knowledge of business systems for quality planning, quality standards and the benefits accruing from integrated management systems and their application in the workplace to generate organisational efficiencies. It shows you how tools such as SERVQUAL, FMEA, QFD and Benchmarking can help evaluate how an organisation is performing against their strategic vision and goals.

Strategic Organisational Excellence looks at the links between concepts of excellence (as used by EFQM and other excellence models) and their use in the strategic management of an organisation. It explores issues raised by variations in culture and sector, both within the organisation and in its relationships with its stakeholders. It will also introduce you to Corporate Social Responsibility and Quality in the Supply Chain.

The Dissertation provides the opportunity to demonstrate your ability to identify, design, plan and undertake research and effectively communicate your findings in an individual research project. Your dissertation will focus on a specific quality management issue of your choice, which may relate to a work situation. You will receive one to one supervision during the dissertation.

Programme Assessment

The course uses a range of teaching methods including formal lectures, tutorials, in-class exercises and work based assignments. Classes are also interactive with the use of case studies and invited speakers. The University’s virtual learning environment (VLE) further supports student study by hosting a range of activities and resources online. The module outlines the fundamental principles, methodologies, methods, techniques and tools that are used in PRINCE2 approach to project management.Project technical skills are developed through the practice of planning, executing and evaluating a new product, service or process.

- Business case development
The module outlines continued justification for the project. It highlights a range of qualitative and quantitative approaches used in the construction of a business case. Technical skills are developed in exploring costs, benefits, risks and schedules which are used to evaluate alternative project scenarios and provides the rationale for the preferred project option.

- Operational research and systems approaches
This module develops a range of quantitative and qualitative modelling skills with which financial and other information can be structured, manipulated and used for business decision support and project control and evaluation.

- Project: Value, innovation and change
This module provides a thorough grounding on how projects and organisations might deal with various aspects of innovation, value development as means of executing the scope of the project and management change from a business project perspectives. - Project risk management

Our MSc in Human Resource Management and Consulting is an intensive full-time programme lasting 12 months.
The programme is divided into two 11 week semesters and the dissertation period which runs from June-September.

Dissertation

During the final three months of the degree you will produce a dissertation. This is your opportunity to explore a particular topic that has been covered during the programme in far greater depth.

Teaching & Learning Methods

You will be exposed to a variety of teaching and learning methods that could include: interactive lectures, case studies, seminar presentations and group project work. As this is a Masters level course, we place a significant emphasis on independent, directed, private study that is often conducted in learning sets or groups.

Assessment

A variety of individual and group assessment methods are used throughout the degree including assignments, exams, presentations, reports and exercises. The dissertation consists of a 10-15,000 word extended piece of individual research, supervised by a member of faculty.

The rationale for the course is based on the recognition that the effectiveness of all IT Services is a vital aspect to the prosperity of any organisation. The course embraces best practice from leading service providers, and by continual reassessment, ensures all material is relevant to today’s computing and management expectations.

The course encompasses IT Service Management through a series of progressive units developing the student’s knowledge from fundamental concepts, through to units addressing IS strategy. This course, offered by the Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine, is designed for health professionals currently in, or seeking to be in, middle and senior health care management positions. If you are seeking to expand your knowledge and skills in the management of health services, this degree caters for your needs. This includes medical or general hospital administrators, clinicians, quality assurance managers, team leaders, senior nursing administrators, unit managers and a range of general task coordinators within the health care system.

If you are working or planning to work in middle or senior management roles in health care, this course will help you prepare for and advance your career.

The course coordinator, Professor Just Stoelwinder, is one of Australia's most senior and respected health care managers and management and policy academics.

You will complete eight core and three elective units.

Core units include:

- clinical leadership and management
- financial issues in health care management
- introduction to epidemiology and biostatistics
- principles of health care quality improvement
- foundations of health policy
- law for health systems
- reform and development of health services
- HSM case study.

Elective units include:

- human factors for patient safety
- applying and practising the principles of patient safety and quality improvement
- climate change and public health
- introduction to health economics
- nursing practice and management
- advanced nursing practice in context
- improving Indigenous equity in profession practice
- MPH code approved units (except units: MPH5020, MPH5301-5313).

You can exit the course early with a Graduate Certificate in Health Services Management or a Graduate Diploma in Health Services Management if you meet the requirements.

Course Structure

The course is structured in 2 parts. Part A Advanced Healthcare Administration and Management and Part B. Extending specialist knowledge electives. All students complete Part A and B.

Part A. Advanced Healthcare Administration and Management
These studies provide you with a comprehensive study of health services management and administration, enabling you to gain advanced skills and knowledge. This includes in areas of health system laws, clinical leadership and management, quality improvement, financial and information management, health policy and health services development.

Part B. Extending specialist knowledge electives
These studies enable you to develop specialised knowledge and advanced skills in areas that suit your interests, skills and career goals. The theoretical and practical skills you gain are consolidated through the completion of a case study, in which you focus on exploring in detail a complex health services management problem within your workplace or within a health care setting.

- Information Systems, Operations and Process Management
Explores the role of information systems, process and operations management, as both drivers and facilitators of business strategy. This module provides an awareness of the importance of processes and information innovation as a means of competitive differentiation.

- Leadership and Ethics
The module critically explores the role and impact of leadership in organisations. It critically examines of the impact and relevance of different theories and their application to live case studies.

- Managing People and Organisations
Provides essential knowledge for those responsible for the management of people in an organisational context. It investigates the way organisations and their environments influence the practice of management and the performance of people.

- Services Planning and Commissioning
A critical analysis of the strategic positioning of public service organisations and the efficient development/review of services, including financial considerations, to deliver these effectively and efficiently. The service planning element includes examination of different strategy models, analysis tools, strategy and service implementation, commissioning issues and quality.

- Project: Developing Strategic and Change Capabilities
You will initiate, plan and carry out a project of strategic importance to your organisation. The design and interpretation of the project should draw on a sound knowledge of strategic and change management disciplines.

The project will prepare you for new and challenging situations of strategic relevance to your organisation. The project will equip you with the knowledge and skills to initiate and lead new developments, be capable of comprehending and integrating cross functional and sectoral issues while drawing on sound judgement, personal responsibility and initiative in complex and unpredictable public service environments.

Course overview

According to the PMI, project management is one of the fastest growing professions worldwide and the need for project management professionals is growing on every continent. Regardless of where you are from, our MSc in Project Management will equip you with both intellectual and practical skills to allow you to become a project management professional in virtually any field of work.

This course is designed to teach project management to people from any discipline. Unlike many other project management courses, you do not need an engineering or technical background to apply. A large number of our students are from business, arts and other backgrounds.

The course covers a comprehensive range of project management topics, utilising lectures, tutorials and practical sessions. You will also be given the chance to put your newly learnt skills into practice in an extended project management business game over a six-week period.

Various other modules ensure that you will develop a well-rounded set of project and general management skills, including International Project Management, Managing People and Project Leadership, Decision Support for Management and Project Risk and Quality Management. Speakers from outside the University also contribute to the course, providing real-world case studies.

Teaching and assessment

We use a wide variety of teaching and learning methods which include lectures, group work, research, discussion groups, seminars, tutorials and practical laboratory sessions.

Compared to an undergraduate course, you will find that this Masters requires a higher level of independent working. Assessment methods include individual written reports and research papers, practical assignments and the Masters project.

Facilities & location

Sunderland’s outstanding IT facilities include the David Goldman Informatics Centre, which has hundreds of computers so it’s easy to find a free workstation with the software you need. We are an accredited Cisco Academy and have two laboratories packed with Cisco networking equipment including routers, switches, terminals and specialist equipment for simulating frame relay and ISDN links.

We host high-performance computing platforms, including a Big Data machine and a High Performance Computing Cluster system, for concurrent processing of complex computational tasks. We also have the equipment and licences for our own public mobile cellular network.

University Library Services
We’ve got thousands of books and e-books on computing topics, with many more titles available through the inter-library loan service. We also subscribe to a comprehensive range of print and electronic journals so you can access the most reliable and up-to-date academic and industry articles.

Project managers have skills that are relevant to most industries. The sectors where project managers are most commonly employed include construction, engineering, digital media, IT and telecoms.
