If you are an experienced graduate teacher and would like to complete a formal qualification to gain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), which is a requirement for those who wish to teach in state-maintained schools in England and Wales, this route is one of the fastest ways to gain QTS.

Course overview

The Assessment Only Route to QTS is for experienced teachers, who have been teaching whole classes for a minimum of two years. For entry to the award you will need to have been teaching in at least two schools, normally for at least two years and accross one of the following age ranges: 3-11 (primary), 7-14 (middle) or 11-19 (secondary).

The Assessment Only Route to QTS allows you to demonstrate that you already meet all of the Teacher's Standards for QTS. The assessment period is a maximum of 12 weeks.

We will ask you to present detailed preliminary evidence at interview – then for the final recommendation for QTS we will assess your teaching – normally at the school where you are currently working.

In addition, you will need to pass the professional skills tests in literacy and numeracy before being accepted onto the route. You will also need a current Disclosure and Barring Service certificate and Fitness-To-Teach approval.

Typical applications to this route include people who have taught for more than two years in the independent sector or overseas. The Assessment Only Route to QTS may be possible to undertake if you wish to be assessed while teaching overseas, normally in a British International School.

If you are awarded QTS, the next step is to undertake a year as a newly qualified teacher. This includes a personalised programme of professional support and further assessment against the core professional standards for teachers normally organised by your employing school or local authority.

The University of Sunderland is an accredited provider for the Assessment Only Route to QTS. More details are available from the Department for Education.

There is no formal teaching on this Assessment Only Route. Assessment takes place in the school where you are employed.
Assessment periods are for a maximum of 12 weeks. We provide an individualised assessment plan to suit your requirements which includes the recommended assessment period. If we consider that a longer period would be beneficial, we will advise you to consider applying for one of our ITT training courses.

Facilities & location

There is no taught element on this route so you will not need to attend the University, but you will be expected to attent an interview, which is normally held at the University.

An exciting one year PGCE course leading to Qualified Teacher Status, preparing you to teach 5 to 11 year olds (KS1 and KS2). This qualification also allows you to teach in the Early Years. Specialising in teaching within urban, multicultural, multilingual schools, we address issues of language, diversity and equality across the curriculum, with clear links to the United Nations convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) and the unique London context.

The course is comprised of short blocks at University interspersed with two extended school placements of 8 and 12 weeks offering trainees the chance to reflect on the links between theory and practice and to critically reflect on their own teaching practice. School placements are supported by school based mentors and university link tutors, the latter also deliver university sessions ensuring continuity of support for trainees.

We aim to facilitate student teachers to become teachers who are of the highest quality; reflective, creative, imaginative and responsive to all children’s needs.

The course is designed to enable you to develop your understanding of the role of the Primary teacher within the broad field of education. There will be opportunities to extend your knowledge, develop your classroom practice and examine the underlying principles and values that inform current debates around educational issues. This programme provides discussion of the role of children’s rights and how this underpins effective learning relationships; understanding of different aspects of inclusive education; introduction to the whole school and wider children’s workforce and team work and collaborative discussion across different subject areas.

The university study includes reflection on personal learning experiences and their application to the process of becoming a qualified teacher and critical examination of education policy and practices as well as national and local data.

The University of Northampton is working as the Initial Teacher Training provider for a diverse and innovative group of Lead Schools and their Alliance schools in Northamptonshire and its surrounding counties to support the delivery of PGCE QTS programmes through the School Direct route. The PGCE QTS programme is the same for those on a University place or School Direct place.

If you would like to apply for a School Direct place for training to teach in 2017-18, then you will need to consider which route will be most suitable and which will be available with different Lead Schools. There are two routes for School Direct applicants:

1. The School Direct (Salaried) route: you will be employed by one of the Lead Schools or their Alliance schools and receive a salary while you train to become a teacher. This programme will lead to Postgraduate Certificate of Education or Professional Graduate Certificate of Education with recommendation for QTS.

2. The School Direct (Training) Programme: you will be based for a large part of your training in one of the Lead Schools or their Alliance schools but you will pay fees for the training programme. This programme will lead to Postgraduate Certificate or Professional Graduate Certificate with QTS. You may be eligible to apply for a bursary which varies according to degree classifications and subject specialisms. Please contact for further details.

This programme will develop you into a highly committed, creative and reflective teacher with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). You will be training to teach children within the age range offered by the Lead School. On successful completion, you will have achieved 60 credits at Masters’ Level (PGCE) and be recommended for and awarded Qualified Teacher Status. You will develop your skills, knowledge and understanding such that you can demonstrate the professional standards for teaching required by the Department for Education and exceed the minimum expectations for each Standard.

You will spend a substantial part of the programme in school-based Placements within the Lead School or their Alliance Schools which will enable you to develop high levels of competence in practical teaching in a range of educational contexts. There are three assessed school-based Placements where you will be assessed against the Teachers’ Standards and submit a Record of Professional Evidence. You will also have the opportunity for self-organising a Placement in an alternative setting including a special school. Course content

The programme is structured to promote academic rigour, skilled practice, independence and flexibility. The emphasis in the programme reflects the primary national curriculum and priorities. The programme develops your subject knowledge, pedagogical knowledge and leadership skills so that you can apply this through teaching in primary classrooms. We work in partnership with schools across Northamptonshire and its neighbouring counties. This enables you to learn in a diverse range of schools. There are also opportunities for placements in Special Educational Needs (SEN) settings.

Methods of Learning

You are expected to engage with Learning Events through the active use of technological tools in the pre and post face to face sessions and online learning activities. You will be taught how to use technological tools to enhance your learning which you can then use in the classroom. You will be given time for independent and peer assisted learning. You will have a tutor for different subjects and professional studies.

Schedule

Learning Events comprise of pre and post face to face sessions with tutors for groups or whole cohorts. During the University based days, you are expected to be available between 9-5pm. During School based days, you are expected to be in school between 8.20am and 4pm.

Assessments

Assessment is continuous. You will engage in four assignments which will contribute towards your M Level Modules. Your teaching, including planning and assessment, is also assessed against the Teachers’ Standards. Partner schools share the responsibility for assessment during the practical teaching.

Facilities and Special Features

You will have access to the School Experience Library. This is an established and extensive set of resources specific for trainee teachers to support your placements and includes activities, big books and planning materials. “The quality of training is enhanced by the excellent resources at the University” (Ofsted 2014).

Other admission requirements

A minimum of five GCSE passes at grade C or above and these must include Mathematics, English Language and Science. You must be interviewed and we will explore your suitability for teaching including undertaking DBS and Disqualification by Association.

The QTS assessment-only pathway is primarily for practitioners who are teaching in schools or children’s centres but who do not have Qualified Teacher Status. The pathway does not provide any training, so applicants must have several years’ experience in at least two schools and be employed in a school or children’s centre that is willing to support the process of assessment.

Assessment for the course is divided into two phases as follows:

Pre-assessment phase (A):
-Pass the NCTL Professional Skills tests in literacy and numeracy
-Prepare an audit of your teaching experience against the Teaching Standards (2012)

Assessment phase (B):
-Evidence portfolio demonstrating achieving the teaching standards across two key stages

Modular structure

We can only offer this route to achieve QTS in subjects where we already offer PGCE or PGCE by School Direct.

There are two parts to the course.

Part A is the pre-assessment phase. On being accepted on to the pathway, you'll be required to pass the NCTL Professional Skills tests in literacy and numeracy before then preparing an audit of your teaching experience against the Teaching Standards (2012).

You will then attend a tutorial with a university tutor to fully evaluate your experience and identify areas for development during part B, the assessment phase. Please note: you will only proceed to the assessment phase if the tutor considers that the standards for Qualified Teacher Status are achievable within the time frame.

You will then start the formal assessment process (Part B: the assessment phase), which will take place over two consecutive half term periods (either from October to February or from February to June). You will be supported in the school by a more experienced member of staff acting as a mentor.

The university tutor will make three visits to the school during the assessment phase and will be responsible for mentor training and ensuring that the teaching standards are being correctly assessed. At the end of the assessment phase the mentor will complete a final assessment and the candidate will present an evidence portfolio that demonstrates that they have consistently met the teaching standards across two key stages. The university tutor will then consider the evidence and recommend successful applicants for the award of Qualified Teacher Status.

Professional accreditation

On successful completion of the assessment phase the university will recommend the applicant to the National College for Teaching and Leadership for the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

Aims

School and Local Authorities are increasingly seeking to employ teachers with not only high levels of competence and skill in classroom practice, but practitioners who have advanced subject knowledge for teaching and enhanced knowledge of systems and theories relevant to education. Therefore, the aims of this program are:

-to enable student teachers to develop a critical understanding of issues and theories that impact upon classroom practice in teaching, learning and assessment in secondary schools;
-to support student teachers in their exploration and critical reflection on their own and others practice in relation to national and regional priorities and policies and current research relevant to the Key Stages for this programme;
-to promote student teachers' practical teaching skills and subject knowledge for teaching across the relevant Key Stages for this programme, making links with relevant theory to inform practice.

The programme aims to further develop students' existing transferable skills in communication, literacy, numeracy and critical reasoning. It is suitable for those who wish to gain employment as teachers and who aspire to progress to leadership and management roles in schools or in the wider world of education. It will provide an excellent foundation for progression to either higher academic or advanced professional qualifications.

Course Content

The PGCE is an intensive programme, which combines an exploration of principles and methods of teaching and learning with practical school-based teaching placements. It lasts for 36 weeks from early September to late June.

The Secondary programme prepares you to work with pupils aged 11-16. At the heart of our programmes is a vision that our student teachers’ teaching will impact positively on pupil progress over time in schools and that our Partnership activities with schools will contribute to school improvement. We aspire for all our students to be outstanding teachers.

The PGCE Secondary courses are structured around three modules, which share a generic General Professional Education (GPE) component. The GPE programme involves an enquiry based learning approach, which combines taught sessions with independent professional learning activities (PLAs). These PLAs require independent research, which is either school-related or school-based. The three PGCE modules are:

1. Education Studies I

This module covers the following GPE themes:
Professionalism, values and reflective practice;
Safeguarding, child protection and e-safety;
Understanding curriculum and the National Curriculum;
Supporting learners, learning and effective behaviour management;
Inclusive education, with a specific focus on supporting pupils with SEND and SEBD;
Effective planning and teaching to promote pupil progress;
Assessment and its role in promoting effective learning.
You will also focus on teaching and learning issues of particular concern to your phase or subject specialism.

2. Education Studies II

This module covers the following GPE themes:
Applying for your first post;
Understanding data analysis to support effective teaching and learning;
Behaviour for learning and the wider professional responsibilities of the subject teacher;
Inclusive education, with a specific focus on supporting pupils with English as an Additional Language, pupils receiving the Pupil Premium and able pupils;
Safeguarding with a focus on the Prevent and Channel national strategy and bullying and homophobic bullying.
You will also continue to focus on teaching and learning issues of particular concern to your phase or subject specialism.

3. Education Studies III

This module focuses specifically on supporting student teachers to make an effective transition into their first post and examines the following themes in GPE:
Preparing for induction and the professional learning action plan for your first post;
Pathways into leadership in education;
Learning outside the classroom;
Contributing to the wider aspects of the formal and informal curriculum and your wider professional role as a teacher.

Subject Specific Course Content

The aim of Physical Education is to develop physical competence so that all children are able to move efficiently, effectively and safely and understand what they are doing. The outcome, physical literacy, is as essential as literacy and numeracy to ensure the holistic educational development of young people in our society.

The PGCE Secondary Physical Education course at Brunel University London has a long standing national reputation for high quality teacher education in our subject area. The course is very popular, drawing on outstanding expertise and experience in this field from both academic and school staff. Many of our alumni have gone on to become school leaders, not only within Physical Education, but also as members of senior management teams in school at an early stage in their career because of the high standards and expectations we have for our student teachers. We retain very close links with our community of Physical Education alumni and many of them go on to be mentors for our student teachers, are involved in selection and recruitment of the next generation of PE teachers from Brunel or contribute to aspects of teaching on the programme where they have specific expertise.

We ensure that all student teachers have been subject to Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) criminal records checks, including a check of the children’s barred list.

The Department for Education has published statutory guidance on the application to schools of the Childcare (Disqualification) Regulations 2009 and related obligations under the Childcare Act 2006. Assessment

Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE)
The PGCE Secondary programme carries 60 Master’s Level credits and requires you to successfully complete three formally assessed pieces of academic work during the year.
All of these assessments also require an accompanying portfolio of evidence.
The Master’s Level credits provide an excellent foundation for future academic and professional study.

Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
Alongside the PGCE academic award for your programme, you will also be assessed for the recommendation of QTS. In order to be recommended for QTS you are required to demonstrate that you have met the Teachers’ Standards (DfE, 2013) in both the University and in school and alternative education settings. All aspects of the programme are designed around you being able to demonstrate that you are meeting the Teachers’ Standards.

Part 1 of the Teachers’ Standards require you to:

Set high expectations which inspire, motivate and challenge pupils
Promote good progress and outcomes by pupils
Demonstrate good subject and curriculum knowledge

The GPE programme involves an enquiry based learning approach, which combines taught sessions with independent professional learning activities (PLAs). These PLAs require independent research, which is either school-related or school-based. The three PGCE modules are:

1. Education Studies I

This module covers the following GPE themes:
Professionalism, values and reflective practice;
Safeguarding, child protection and e-safety;
Understanding curriculum and the National Curriculum;
Supporting learners, learning and effective behaviour management;
Inclusive education, with a specific focus on supporting pupils with SEND and SEBD;
Effective planning and teaching to promote pupil progress;
Assessment and its role in promoting effective learning.
You will also focus on teaching and learning issues of particular concern to your phase or subject specialism.

2. Education Studies II

This module covers the following GPE themes:
Applying for your first post;
Understanding data analysis to support effective teaching and learning;
Behaviour for learning and the wider professional responsibilities of the subject teacher;
Inclusive education, with a specific focus on supporting pupils with English as an Additional Language, pupils receiving the Pupil Premium and able pupils;
Safeguarding with a focus on the Prevent and Channel national strategy and bullying and homophobic bullying.

3. Education Studies III

This module focuses specifically on supporting student teachers to make an effective transition into their first post and examines the following themes in GPE:
Preparing for induction and the professional learning action plan for your first post;
Pathways into leadership in education;
Learning outside the classroom;
Contributing to the wider aspects of the formal and informal curriculum and your wider professional role as a teacher.

Subject Specific Course Content

This course has resulted from an initiative by the professional body for physics, the Institute of Physics, in response to current and future needs for specialist physics teachers in secondary schools who may wish to offer mathematics as a second subject. The PGCE is a full time, one year, postgraduate course, carrying 60 Masters Level credits.

Potential students will be graduates of physics or engineering who may be recent graduates or ‘career changers’ of different ages. The normal entry requirement is a bachelor’s degree from a recognised University, at upper second-class honours or above and one where physics topics form at least 50% of the degree content.

This qualification aims to produce reflective, confident and competent teachers of physics and mathematics who are able to be effective at planning, teaching and assessing these subjects in secondary schools and contribute to the whole school community.

Subject Specific Course Content

As a qualified science teacher you may be required to teach National Curriculum general science to Key Stage 4, as well as your particular specialism to ‘A’ level and beyond. To this end, the course aims to facilitate your transformation into a well-educated, well-trained, confident and motivated science educator.

Along with English and mathematics, science is one of the three core subjects of the National Curriculum and since all pupils have to study a broad, balanced curriculum in science there is a demand for well-qualified and skilled science teachers. Most pupils entering secondary school are excited at the prospect of work, for the first time in a fully equipped laboratory, and secondary school science teachers have to build upon and sustain this interest for the subject.

Aims

School and Local Authorities are increasingly seeking to employ teachers with not only high levels of competence and skill in classroom practice, but practitioners who have advanced subject knowledge for teaching and enhanced knowledge of systems and theories relevant to education. Therefore, the aims of this program are:

-to enable student teachers to develop a critical understanding of issues and theories that impact upon classroom practice in teaching, learning and assessment in secondary schools;
-to support student teachers in their exploration and critical reflection on their own and others practice in relation to national and regional priorities and policies and current research relevant to the Key Stages for this programme;
-to promote student teachers' practical teaching skills and subject knowledge for teaching across the relevant Key Stages for this programme, making links with relevant theory to inform practice.

The programme aims to further develop students' existing transferable skills in communication, literacy, numeracy and critical reasoning. It is suitable for those who wish to gain employment as teachers and who aspire to progress to leadership and management roles in schools or in the wider world of education. It will provide an excellent foundation for progression to either higher academic or advanced professional qualifications.

Course Content

The PGCE is an intensive programme, which combines an exploration of principles and methods of teaching and learning with practical school-based teaching placements. It lasts for 36 weeks from early September to late June.

The Secondary programme prepares you to work with pupils aged 11-16. At the heart of our programmes is a vision that our student teachers’ teaching will impact positively on pupil progress over time in schools and that our Partnership activities with schools will contribute to school improvement. We aspire for all our students to be outstanding teachers.

The PGCE Secondary courses are structured around three modules, which share a generic General Professional Education (GPE) component. The GPE programme involves an enquiry based learning approach, which combines taught sessions with independent professional learning activities (PLAs). These PLAs require independent research, which is either school-related or school-based. The three PGCE modules are:

1. Education Studies I
This module covers the following GPE themes:

Professionalism, values and reflective practice;
Safeguarding, child protection and e-safety;
Understanding curriculum and the National Curriculum;
Supporting learners, learning and effective behaviour management;
Inclusive education, with a specific focus on supporting pupils with SEND and SEBD;
Effective planning and teaching to promote pupil progress;
Assessment and its role in promoting effective learning.

You will also focus on teaching and learning issues of particular concern to your phase or subject specialism.

2. Education Studies II
This module covers the following GPE themes:

Applying for your first post;
Understanding data analysis to support effective teaching and learning;
Behaviour for learning and the wider professional responsibilities of the subject teacher;
Inclusive education, with a specific focus on supporting pupils with English as an Additional Language, pupils receiving the Pupil Premium and able pupils;
Safeguarding with a focus on the Prevent and Channel national strategy and bullying and homophobic bullying.
You will also continue to focus on teaching and learning issues of particular concern to your phase or subject specialism.

3. Education Studies III
This module focuses specifically on supporting student teachers to make an effective transition into their first post and examines the following themes in GPE:

Preparing for induction and the professional learning action plan for your first post;
Pathways into leadership in education;
Learning outside the classroom;
Contributing to the wider aspects of the formal and informal curriculum and your wider professional role as a teacher.

Subject Specific Course Content

As a qualified science teacher you may be required to teach National Curriculum general science to Key Stage 4, as well as your particular specialism to ‘A’ level and beyond. To this end, the course aims to facilitate your transformation into a well-educated, well-trained, confident and motivated science educator.

Along with English and mathematics, science is one of the three core subjects of the National Curriculum and since all pupils have to study a broad, balanced curriculum in science there is a demand for well-qualified and skilled science teachers. Most pupils entering secondary school are excited at the prospect of work, for the first time in a fully equipped laboratory, and secondary school science teachers have to build upon and sustain this interest for the subject.

To meet this challenge we need capable, skilled and enthusiastic teachers who are able to motivate young people and lead them to discover the wonders of science.

School Experience

School-based professional learning is a compulsory element of all programmes leading to a recommendation for QTS. The course involves the statutory requirement of at least 120 days of school experience in the form of block school placements undertaken in at least two different contexts.

Our current partnership schools are mainly located in the West London area and adjoining Home Counties. We have developed close links with a number of very good schools over a number of years, and offer placements within carefully chosen schools that provide an appropriate professional learning experience. The ethnic and cultural diversity of the schools we work with is a distinctive aspect of our provision and we are equally proud of the diversity of our student teacher cohort, who reflect the communities in which many of them go on to work as teachers.

We also offer student teachers the opportunity to experience placements in alternative settings, which include special schools, Pupil Referral Units (PRUs), young offenders institutions. This further demonstrates our commitment to preparing teachers to work with young people in a diverse range of educational contexts.

You will be allocated a school-based mentor, selected for their experience and expertise, who is there to help you develop and learn while you are on placement. The importance of this person should not be underestimated. Teaching is a very challenging profession and with the help of your school-based mentor and your University tutor we aim to make sure that you have support every step of the way, encouraging reflection and development.

Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS), Childcare Disqualification and Prohibition Orders

As an accredited provider of Initial Teacher Education we have to have regard to the Department for Education’s statutory guidance Keeping Children Safe in Education, when carrying out their duties to safeguard and promote the welfare of children. We ensure that all student teachers have been subject to Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) criminal records checks, including a check of the children’s barred list. The Department for Education has published statutory guidance on the application to schools of the Childcare (Disqualification) Regulations 2009 and related obligations under the Childcare Act 2006.

We undertake our responsibility to ensure that the student teachers are not, therefore, disqualified from childcare or that the student teacher has obtained a childcare disqualification waiver from Ofsted. We also check that candidates are not subject to a prohibition order for teaching issued by the Secretary of State.

Teaching

We adopt an enquiry-based learning approach in our PGCE Secondary courses where students are encouraged to research and investigate a range of broad and subject specific educational themes and issues and bring their findings back for discussion in interactive lectures, workshops and seminars. These themes and issues address national, regional and partnership priorities as well as specific areas for investigation with the subject area.

Assessment

Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE)
The PGCE Secondary programme carries 60 Master’s Level credits and requires you to successfully complete three formally assessed pieces of academic work during the year.
All of these assessments also require an accompanying portfolio of evidence.
The Master’s Level credits provide an excellent foundation for future academic and professional study.

Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
Alongside the PGCE academic award for your programme, you will also be assessed for the recommendation of QTS. In order to be recommended for QTS you are required to demonstrate that you have met the Teachers’ Standards (DfE, 2013) in both the University and in school and alternative education settings. All aspects of the programme are designed around you being able to demonstrate that you are meeting the Teachers’ Standards.

Part 1 of the Teachers’ Standards require you to:

Set high expectations which inspire, motivate and challenge pupils
Promote good progress and outcomes by pupils
Demonstrate good subject and curriculum knowledge
Plan and teach well structured lessons
Adapt teaching to respond to the strengths and needs of all pupils
Make accurate and productive use of assessment
Manage behaviour effectively to ensure a good and safe learning environment
Fulfil wider professional responsibilities
(Teachers’ Standards, DfE, 2013)

Part 2 of the Teachers’ Standards require students to demonstrate the highest standards of personal and professional conduct.

As the PGCE is a professional course, 100% attendance is an expectation.

Recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status will be made by the Secondary PGCE Examination Board for all those who successfully demonstrate the Teachers’ Standards as shown in the requirements for University and school-based work.

Manchester Metropolitan University has a national reputation for initial teacher education which has been established over 100 years. Our Department of Primary Teacher Education has a team of over 40 primary teaching staff who between them have expertise in all primary curriculum subjects, enabling us to offer a wide range of specialisms. The majority of teaching staff are actively involved in research, linked to our Education and Social Research Institute, one of the leading UK centres for educational research. We have an Initial Teacher Education Partnership with over 500 primary schools and strong community links across the North West region, ensuring we can offer our trainees a diverse range of placement experiences.

Our aim is to train confident teachers and reflective practitioners who will have strong prospects for employment and career progression. Trainees have access to Manchester Met's dedicated Careers and Employability Service and within the PGCE programme are supported in securing their first teaching appointment.

After graduation we continue to provide support and advice to our Newly Qualified Teachers (NQTs), including online resources, conferences and peer networking.

Our full-time PGCE Primary Education provides intensive training leading to Qualified Teacher Status ('QTS') for early years establishments and primary schools in the 3-7, 7-11 or 5-11 age range.

School-based training is combined with taught sessions at university and independent study. Applicants can choose our University-led ('Core') PGCE training route, or one of our School-led ('School Direct') routes, both of which lead to QTS. We work in partnership with 18 school alliances in the North West of England to offer School Direct places (salaried and non-salaried).

University-led ('Core') route

Trainees typically spend around 12 weeks in university during the year, including a block at the start of the course, combined with at least 120 days of school-based training, in at least two different schools. Manchester Met organises placements.

School-led ('School Direct') route

Trainees are attached to a lead school within an alliance of schools - Manchester Met works in partnership with 18 school alliances across the North West region. Depending on the term times of the school(s) involved they will typically spend around 30 weeks in school and around four weeks in university for taught sessions. Placements are organised by the lead school.

On both routes trainees will experience school-based training in at least two different schools, and have the opportunity to undertake an inclusion placement with a focus on Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND). The School-led also includes a visit to a Key Stage 3 setting. Throughout the PGCE trainees are supported by a personal tutor, experienced teaching staff and mentors in university and at school.

Candidates can apply for both School Direct and University PGCE routes; both have the same entry requirements. Successful completion of either route includes 60 Masters level credits.

Early Years route (Manchester only)

This route mirrors the PGCE Primary Education programme, with an Early Years focus. Completing this course will enable practitioners to teach in both the Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1.

Applications for PGCE routes starting in September 2017 should be made online via UCAS Teacher Training which is expected to open in late October this year. Early application is recommended as places are limited. Please check our entry requirements before applying.

Assessment Only Route to QTS in Primary sector

Experienced, but unqualified graduate teachers, wishing to complete a formal qualification to gain Qualified Teacher Status may be eligible for this route. It will suit those who have taught in at least two schools or colleges, and who have substantial experience in two consecutive age ranges. It is not sufficient for candidates only to have experience of two schools.

Important information

Manchester Metropolitan University has been undertaking a review of the long-term future of academic provision at its Cheshire campus. It has now been confirmed that the University will withdraw from the Cheshire campus. This means that we expect the campus to close in the summer of 2019.

As the withdrawal from the campus will be a phased process we are still pleased to receive applications for one year full time postgraduate taught courses starting in 2017 on the Cheshire campus. We also continue to welcome applications for part time postgraduate courses of two years in duration in the Exercise and Sport Science department starting in 2017. Applications for courses that are expected to take longer than two years to complete are currently on hold.

Placement options

Manchester Met organises placements for trainees on our University-led ('Core') PGCE route through our extensive Initial Teacher Education Partnership. Our Partnership vision is to train 'outstanding, critically-literate professional teachers who will challenge and inspire their learners'.

The schools we work with share our commitment to aspiration and excellence, with a focus on strong mentor training and support for trainees. There is also an emphasis on national priorities, including behaviour management, literacy and numeracy.

Our partner schools cover a wide geographical area and diversity of social, economic and cultural backgrounds, ranging across inner city, suburban and rural settings, enabling us to offer our trainees a broad range of placement opportunities.

We organise placements starting with the trainee's term-time postcode and matching this with placement offers from schools. Trainees are expected to travel up to 90 minutes each way from where they live and to arrive in school 45 minutes before the school day commences. We take into consideration special circumstances, such as disabilities, cultural requirements and medical conditions. In addition, we match carefully to ensure a breadth of experience across different key stages.

Trainees spend at least 120 days on contrasting placements in two schools related to the two age phases of their particular route through the course, with time spent in each key stage/phase. They are attached to each school for a substantial period of time and expected to engage in the full life of the school.

In their first placement trainees gain experience across the full age range of the school and teach in one class for an extended period, taking increased responsibility for that class.

They then begin to teach a range of curriculum areas, as well as gaining an understanding of cross-curricular themes.
The second placement focuses on the whole curriculum and extended management of the classroom in order to meet the requirements for the Teachers' Standards.

Trainees are required to pass both periods of school-based training.

School Direct trainees will undertake teaching practice at their lead school and other schools within the alliance. Placements are organised by the lead school.

All trainees are supported in various ways whilst on placement:
-Every trainee has a personal tutor - this is the tutor who knows the trainee best at university and will usually teach them for some aspects of their studies. Personal tutors write trainee references for employment. For School-led routes the school writes a reference.
-Every trainee is allocated a visiting tutor whilst on placement. This tutor supports the school when assessing the trainee's progress and do do this observes each trainee teaching.
-Every trainee has a school mentor, this may be their class teacher or someone in the school who oversees placements
-Often there are multiple trainees on placement in each school, providing an inbuilt support network

Gain qualified teacher status (QTS) as a teacher of food technology with experience teaching Key Stages 3 to 5. Through study and teaching placements, you develop the skills, knowledge and enthusiasm needed to teach pupils with a range of abilities in both secondary school and college settings.

This secondary teacher training course leads to qualified teacher status (QTS). It equips you to teach food technology.

On the course you

  • enhance your subject knowledge, understanding and skills
  • learn how to teach food technology
  • learn about the wider role of teachers in school
  • gain knowledge about schools and the education system
  • apply your skills and knowledge on school placements

We help you develop the skills you need to be a successful teacher of pupils of all abilities. By studying with us you build your enthusiasm, confidence, knowledge and ability to teach food technology.

You complete a lot of practical work in our well-equipped facilities to help you learn creative and innovative teaching methods, which you can then transfer to the classroom.

You also gain self-evaluation skills by completing a career preparation profile. This provides evidence that you meet the QTS standards for self-evaluation and personal development.

School placements are central to the course. You complete teaching placements in two 11–16 or 11–18 schools. This allows you to experience the progression from Key Stage 3 to 5. A University-trained mentor supports you when on placement. Your course tutor also visits you to discuss your progress.

We have strong partnerships with secondary schools and colleges in the area and many of our students are offered teaching jobs in their placement schools.

Your placements are complemented by University and Academy based study that includes teaching sessions, seminars, group study, tutorials and assessment.

During the course you can choose to complete either the PGCE or the professional graduate certificate in education (ProfGCE). Both qualifications achieve QTS but the PGCE also gives you 60 masters level credits, which you can use towards a masters degree.

School Direct

Apply for a place through the School Direct scheme for a dedicated route into a job after graduation. During School Direct, the school or partnership of schools that you've applied to will be much more involved in your selection, recruitment and professional development as there is the expectation that you will be employed by them once qualified.

Supported by your school or college, the course allows you to demonstrate that you already meet all the QTS standards through assessment of your current teaching. A successful assessment leads to a recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)

How will I be assessed?

The assessment takes place in the school or college where you are currently employed. Full support by your employer is essential to ensure the assessments can take place.

The assessment process

The assessment will include:

1. a completed application form, including a personal statement and your teaching timetable
2. a reference from your current employing school or college
3. presentation of comprehensive and detailed evidence to show how you meet the Teachers' Standards for QTS
4. observation and assessment of your teaching in a school
5. evidence of passing the National College for Teaching and Leadership's Professional Skills tests
6. a DBS (formerly CRB) enhanced disclosure clearance and appropriate medical checks.

How long does the assessment take?

The assessment will be completed within a maximum period of 12 weeks. If a longer period or training is required, then an alternative training programme can be advised.

As school observations are required, the assessment can not take place over school holidays. Therefore, assessments will not take place until the Autumn term for any applications made after the Easter period.

Interview

If your application is successful, the initial interview and observation will take place in the school/college where you are currently employed.
