If you are an experienced graduate teacher and would like to complete a formal qualification to gain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), which is a requirement for those who wish to teach in state-maintained schools in England and Wales, this route is one of the fastest ways to gain QTS.

Course overview

The Assessment Only Route to QTS is for experienced teachers, who have been teaching whole classes for a minimum of two years. For entry to the award you will need to have been teaching in at least two schools, normally for at least two years and accross one of the following age ranges: 3-11 (primary), 7-14 (middle) or 11-19 (secondary).

The Assessment Only Route to QTS allows you to demonstrate that you already meet all of the Teacher's Standards for QTS. The assessment period is a maximum of 12 weeks.

We will ask you to present detailed preliminary evidence at interview – then for the final recommendation for QTS we will assess your teaching – normally at the school where you are currently working.

In addition, you will need to pass the professional skills tests in literacy and numeracy before being accepted onto the route. You will also need a current Disclosure and Barring Service certificate and Fitness-To-Teach approval.

Typical applications to this route include people who have taught for more than two years in the independent sector or overseas. The Assessment Only Route to QTS may be possible to undertake if you wish to be assessed while teaching overseas, normally in a British International School.

If you are awarded QTS, the next step is to undertake a year as a newly qualified teacher. This includes a personalised programme of professional support and further assessment against the core professional standards for teachers normally organised by your employing school or local authority.

The University of Sunderland is an accredited provider for the Assessment Only Route to QTS. More details are available from the Department for Education.

Course content

There is no formal teaching on this Assessment Only Route. Assessment takes place in the school where you are employed.
Assessment periods are for a maximum of 12 weeks. We provide an individualised assessment plan to suit your requirements which includes the recommended assessment period. If we consider that a longer period would be beneficial, we will advise you to consider applying for one of our ITT training courses.

Facilities & location

There is no taught element on this route so you will not need to attend the University, but you will be expected to attent an interview, which is normally held at the University.

An exciting one year PGCE course leading to Qualified Teacher Status, preparing you to teach 5 to 11 year olds (KS1 and KS2). This qualification also allows you to teach in the Early Years. Specialising in teaching within urban, multicultural, multilingual schools, we address issues of language, diversity and equality across the curriculum, with clear links to the United Nations convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) and the unique London context.

The course is comprised of short blocks at University interspersed with two extended school placements of 8 and 12 weeks offering trainees the chance to reflect on the links between theory and practice and to critically reflect on their own teaching practice. School placements are supported by school based mentors and university link tutors, the latter also deliver university sessions ensuring continuity of support for trainees.

We aim to facilitate student teachers to become teachers who are of the highest quality; reflective, creative, imaginative and responsive to all children’s needs.

The course is designed to enable you to develop your understanding of the role of the Primary teacher within the broad field of education. There will be opportunities to extend your knowledge, develop your classroom practice and examine the underlying principles and values that inform current debates around educational issues. The School Direct salaried QTS only pathway is both rewarding and demanding. As this is an employment-based route to QTS, trainees are employed in their school setting and attend the university for a limited number of training days across the training year. The university sessions support the wider professional development of each teacher. This programme provides discussion of the role of children’s rights and how this underpins effective learning relationships; understanding of different aspects of inclusive education; introduction to the whole school and wider children’s workforce and team work and collaborative discussion across different subject areas.

The university study includes reflection on personal learning experiences and their application to the process of becoming a qualified teacher and critical examination of education policy and practices as well as national and local data.

The candidate - To apply you must have:
-Degree or equivalent qualification.
-GCSEs grade C in English and mathematics. Additionally grade C GCSE in science if you are applying for assessment in primary age ranges.
-Substantial experience of teaching. Typically this would consist of two years worth of teaching, i.e. whole-class planning, teaching, assessment and reporting to parents in two or more settings and across two or more consecutive age ranges. Your teaching experience must enable you to demonstrate how you already fully meet the Teachers' Standards without the need for further training or experience. (You may need to undertake additional teaching experience in preparation for your assessment, e.g. in another age range, school, or subject(s).
-We would normally expect a significant proportion of evidence to be recent (within the last 12 months). However, evidence from teaching in a second setting could be older. There are no hard and fast rules about the age of evidence. We will make a professional judgement in individual cases.

The main languages covered are French, Spanish and German. For graduates with a good honours degree, this course equips you with the skills needed for the demanding task of teaching 3 - 7 year old children in nursery and infant schools. You develop the knowledge, skills and enthusiasm you need to motivate young children’s learning.

The course awards Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and develops the knowledge, skills and enthusiasm you need to motivate young children’s learning.

You study the core subjects of English, mathematics and science for Key Stage 1 and all aspects of the early years foundation stage. As part of the course you gain 60 credits towards a masters qualification.

Much of your development is built through your school-based training, linked by university-based learning. Your first experience is in Key Stage 1. It begins with 16 initial days followed by 7 week assessed placement. The second school based training placement is in a foundation stage setting and is over a longer time period. Modules
The course is made up of modules which integrate experience in schools and nurseries with professional and curriculum studies. You complete two masters levels modules. One enables you to evaluate and reflect on your own progress as a teacher, and the second enables you to explore a chosen area in more depth in your school or setting and with colleagues in that setting.

The other modules assess your ability against the teacher standards. You are assessed in foundation stage and in Key Stage 1.

Assessment
Your academic work is assessed by written coursework assignments. Your teaching is assessed in schools and by school based mentors. You record evidence of your progress towards Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) in a professional development portfolio.This course is assessed at masters level and we expect most students to achieve this. However, some students may not attain this level of academic work. These students may be awarded a Professional Certificate in Education, provided they have passed all elements of the course at undergraduate level, and have met all the standards for QTS.

Other admission requirements

You must also pass QTS skills tests in numeracy and literacy as designated by the National College for Teaching and Leadership, and complete a declaration of criminal convictions and health check forms. If you are shortlisted, we will invite you to a selection event, and you should bring a passport or photo driving license with you. The University of Northampton is working as the Initial Teacher Training provider for a diverse and innovative group of Lead Schools and their Alliance schools in Northamptonshire and its surrounding counties to support the delivery of PGCE QTS programmes through the School Direct route. The PGCE QTS programme is the same for those on a University place or School Direct place.

If you would like to apply for a School Direct place for training to teach in 2017-18, then you will need to consider which route will be most suitable and which will be available with different Lead Schools. There are two routes for School Direct applicants:

1. The School Direct (Salaried) route: you will be employed by one of the Lead Schools or their Alliance schools and receive a salary while you train to become a teacher. This programme will lead to Postgraduate Certificate of Education or Professional Graduate Certificate of Education with recommendation for QTS.

2. The School Direct (Training) Programme: you will be based for a large part of your training in one of the Lead Schools or their Alliance schools but you will pay fees for the training programme. This programme will lead to Postgraduate Certificate or Professional Graduate Certificate with QTS. You may be eligible to apply for a bursary which varies according to degree classifications and subject specialisms. Please contact for further details.

This programme will develop you into a highly committed, creative and reflective teacher with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). You will be training to teach children within the age range offered by the Lead School. On successful completion, you will have achieved 60 credits at Masters’ Level (PGCE) and be recommended for and awarded Qualified Teacher Status. You will develop your skills, knowledge and understanding such that you can demonstrate the professional standards for teaching required by the Department for Education and exceed the minimum expectations for each Standard.

You will spend a substantial part of the programme in school-based Placements within the Lead School or their Alliance Schools which will enable you to develop high levels of competence in practical teaching in a range of educational contexts. There are three assessed school-based Placements where you will be assessed against the Teachers’ Standards and submit a Record of Professional Evidence. You will also have the opportunity for self-organising a Placement in an alternative setting including a special school. You will have a trained mentor in each school-based Placement and a Personal Academic Tutor at the University to support your professional development.

Course content

The programme is structured to promote academic rigour, skilled practice, independence and flexibility. The emphasis in the programme reflects the primary national curriculum and priorities. The programme develops your subject knowledge, pedagogical knowledge and leadership skills so that you can apply this through teaching in primary classrooms. We work in partnership with schools across Northamptonshire and its neighbouring counties. This enables you to learn in a diverse range of schools. There are also opportunities for placements in Special Educational Needs (SEN) settings.

University Learning Events and three school placements. There are two compulsory modules at Level 7 which are worth 60 credits and can be used to contribute to a full MA in the future. The modules are Teaching, Learning and Assessment and Professional Studies.

Methods of Learning

You are expected to engage with Learning Events through the active use of technological tools in the pre and post face to face sessions and online learning activities. You will be taught how to use technological tools to enhance your learning which you can then use in the classroom. You will be given time for independent and peer assisted learning. You will have a tutor for different subjects and professional studies.

Schedule

Learning Events comprise of pre and post face to face sessions with tutors for groups or whole cohorts. During the University based days, you are expected to be available between 9-5pm. During School based days, you are expected to be in school between 8.20am and 4pm.

Assessments

Assessment is continuous. You will engage in four assignments which will contribute towards your M Level Modules. Your teaching, including planning and assessment, is also assessed against the Teachers’ Standards. Partner schools share the responsibility for assessment during the practical teaching.

Facilities and Special Features

You will have access to the School Experience Library. This is an established and extensive set of resources specific for trainee teachers to support your placements and includes activities, big books and planning materials. “The quality of training is enhanced by the excellent resources at the University” (Ofsted 2014).

The Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) assessment-only pathway provides a unique opportunity to gain your QTS. It's designed for those who are teaching in schools but who do not have Qualified Teacher Status and is an exciting school-based training programme that is both rewarding and demanding.

More about this course

The QTS assessment-only pathway is primarily for practitioners who are teaching in schools or children’s centres but who do not have Qualified Teacher Status. The pathway does not provide any training, so applicants must have several years’ experience in at least two schools and be employed in a school or children’s centre that is willing to support the process of assessment.

Assessment for the course is divided into two phases as follows:

Pre-assessment phase (A):
-Pass the NCTL Professional Skills tests in literacy and numeracy
-Prepare an audit of your teaching experience against the Teaching Standards (2012)

Assessment phase (B):
-Evidence portfolio demonstrating achieving the teaching standards across two key stages

Modular structure

We can only offer this route to achieve QTS in subjects where we already offer PGCE or PGCE by School Direct.

There are two parts to the course.

Part A is the pre-assessment phase. On being accepted on to the pathway, you'll be required to pass the NCTL Professional Skills tests in literacy and numeracy before then preparing an audit of your teaching experience against the Teaching Standards (2012).

You will then attend a tutorial with a university tutor to fully evaluate your experience and identify areas for development during part B, the assessment phase. Please note: you will only proceed to the assessment phase if the tutor considers that the standards for Qualified Teacher Status are achievable within the time frame.

You will then start the formal assessment process (Part B: the assessment phase), which will take place over two consecutive half term periods (either from October to February or from February to June). You will be supported in the school by a more experienced member of staff acting as a mentor.

The university tutor will make three visits to the school during the assessment phase and will be responsible for mentor training and ensuring that the teaching standards are being correctly assessed. At the end of the assessment phase the mentor will complete a final assessment and the candidate will present an evidence portfolio that demonstrates that they have consistently met the teaching standards across two key stages. The university tutor will then consider the evidence and recommend successful applicants for the award of Qualified Teacher Status.

Professional accreditation

On successful completion of the assessment phase the university will recommend the applicant to the National College for Teaching and Leadership for the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

The AO route is for graduates (*including non-EU teachers) who have significant teaching experience in a UK school and are looking to gain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) without the need for further training. They must demonstrate that they are already teaching at either "good" or "outstanding" level against the Teachers' Standards and be ready to be formally assessed by a university tutor for a period of up to 12 weeks.

The assessment period can range from 6–12 weeks depending on the individual. Recommendation for QTS will follow if the candidate fulfils the requirements for QTS.

Supported by your school or college, the course allows you to demonstrate that you already meet all the QTS standards through assessment of your current teaching. A successful assessment leads to a recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)

How will I be assessed?

The assessment takes place in the school or college where you are currently employed. Full support by your employer is essential to ensure the assessments can take place.

The assessment process

The assessment will include:

1. a completed application form, including a personal statement and your teaching timetable
2. a reference from your current employing school or college
3. presentation of comprehensive and detailed evidence to show how you meet the Teachers' Standards for QTS
4. observation and assessment of your teaching in a school
5. evidence of passing the National College for Teaching and Leadership's Professional Skills tests
6. a DBS (formerly CRB) enhanced disclosure clearance and appropriate medical checks.

How long does the assessment take?

The assessment will be completed within a maximum period of 12 weeks. If a longer period or training is required, then an alternative training programme can be advised.

As school observations are required, the assessment can not take place over school holidays. Therefore, assessments will not take place until the Autumn term for any applications made after the Easter period.

School Direct is a delivered in partnership with schools. The key feature of this course is that the majority of the year is spent on placement working alongside experienced colleagues in schools.

The course aims to harness the knowledge and experience of school colleagues in the delivery of courses, working in partnership with the experience of accredited ITT providers such as universities. schools, and the mentors within them, provide the vast majority of the training.

Schools benefit by being more directly involved in student recruitment and the delivery of the course.

This is a cross phase course, you can study within the primary or secondary phase. The course takes one academic year to complete.

There are two School Direct courses, School Direct (Salaried) and School Direct (Training) (sometimes called non-salaried). It is important that you are clear which of these courses your school is offering as it will affect your funding for the course (see Fees and Finance below).

Course detail

There are two possible awards from your School Direct course:

• Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) Pathway, all successful student teachers will achieve the recommendation for QTS.

• School Direct PGCE Pathway, successful student teachers who (in consultation with their school partner) decide to opt in to the School Direct PGCE (as described in “What will I study?”) will be awarded a PGCE.

Suitability

The course is for people who want to train to become teachers, spending the majority of their training time in school alongside qualified teachers.

Content

QTS Pathway – all students

The majority of your time on this course is spent in school. It is a requirement of all QTS courses that you get at least 60 days (or equivalent) training through the year. You will get at least 15 days taught sessions from the University and a course of professional development provided by the school. Your development in school will be supported by a mentor who will help you in your progress towards meeting the standards for QTS. You will be required to undertake a period of placement in a second school that provides a contrast to your base school.

School Direct PGCE Pathway – an option for all students

The School Direct PGCE pathway is a mixture of work based learning and academic assessments. All students on this pathway will study the aspects described above in the QTS pathway. In addition, Student Teachers who opt in to this pathway will be required to undertake academic study and write academic assignments. There are additional taught sessions and tutorial support to support students studying on this pathway.

Format

The majority of the learning on this course happens in schools. Student teachers will learn in a variety of ways in school, including from experienced mentors, through observing others and through experience.

There are 15 days taught in university at the Canterbury Campus. The teaching on these days will be a mixture of lecture and seminar and workshop activity.

There is a high level of individual support for learning offered in this course through the mentors in school and the university tutors.

Assessment

• QTS Pathway – all students
Throughout the course you will be assessed by your mentors and tutors who will grade you at key points to help you understand how well you are meeting the standards for QTS. At the end of the course you will have a final assessment. This will take the form of a review meeting to formally assess whether you have met the standards for QTS.

• School Direct PGCE Pathway
In addition to the above assessment process for the recommendation for QTS students who have opted for the School Direct PGCE Pathway will be required to submit three 4,000 word assignments, spread across the year, which will be assessed at Masters Level.

What can I do next?

Successful students on this course are able to become Qualified Teachers.

Our PGCE Primary Education with QTS programme is a school-based partnership, combining on-campus study with training in placement schools and settings.

The PGCE will train you to teach across the 5-11 age range in Key Stages 1 and 2 and achieve the Teachers’ Standards. You will receive a high quality training experience and learn the latest approaches and strategies necessary to fully prepare you for your first year as a Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT).

During the programme you will study a breadth of subjects, including all of the National Curriculum subjects. Through a focus on evidence-based research, you will specialise in one of the following: Computing; English; Humanities and Creative Arts; Mathematics; Modern Languages; Physical Education; Science; Special Educational Needs/Disabilities. We strongly recommend an early application as there is high demand for places.

What will I study?

This PGCE consists of three main elements.

- Academic and Professional Development – gaining knowledge of how children learn and how their needs differ, you will develop the core skills of planning, assessment, teaching and classroom management. You will also gain an understanding of the education system, consider the wider professional role of a teacher, and learn how to reflect upon and take responsibility for your professional development;

- Curriculum Subject Knowledge – working with expert tutors, you will acquire essential subject knowledge for the Primary National Curriculum. Exploring a range of teaching methods, including the use of ‘new’ technologies, you will be guided in how to provide children with stimulating, imaginative and effective learning experiences;

- Specialism – you will identify a specific focus of personal interest relevant to current issues, initiatives and discussions within your chosen specialism. You will conduct a literature review and develop proposals for school improvement.

How will I study?

A combination of academic study, group discussion and reflection, together with practical, work-based learning in the classroom will give you the knowledge and skills you need to become an excellent teacher. A substantial amount of face-to-face contact time with specialist tutors will be facilitated across all Primary National Curriculum subjects. You will be supported by online and distance learning materials and encouraged to develop key skills, including the use of technology, to support your own learning.

You will also spend a significant amount of time in schools in a variety of Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 classes during the programme. Progressing from teaching small groups with a partner to teaching a full class on your own as you become more confident in the classroom, you will observe outstanding teachers in action and learn from high quality training in schools.

Undertaking a range of differentiated training experiences closely linked to your individual targets, you will develop your role as a classroom teacher, assuming greater responsibility for the class as you move through the programme.

How will I be assessed?

A balanced combination of coursework and observed classroom experience will be assessed against the Professional Standards for QTS.

You will also complete:

- Edge Hill subject knowledge audits in English and Mathematics;
- A Career Entry Development Profile (CEDP) which serves as a bridge between your PGCE programme and your Induction Year as a Newly Qualified Teacher.
