The DClinDent in Prosthodontics is a three-year, full-time programme which will allow the candidate to achieve specialist-level training in orthodontics, together with a taught professional Doctorate, and will also prepare them for the Speciality Membership Examinations of one of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons of the UK.

The DClinDent aims to provide doctoral level educational opportunities to enable students to develop, consolidate and enhance their range of academic and clinical competencies to enable independent and reflective practice at the standard of a specialist in each clinical discipline.

Programme structure

The programme addresses five components:

  • the scientific basis of prosthodontic care
  • the relationship of other dental disciplines to prosthodontic care
  • diagnosis and treatment planning for patients with advanced prosthodontics problems
  • the clinical treatment of patients with advanced prosthodontic problems
  • clinical treatment involving combined prosthodontic and other dental therapy

For Year 1 and Year 2 students, there will be a written exam at the end of each semester.

In addition to the above, at the end of Year 2, students will also have oral exams.

Successful completion of the first two years of the programme will allow students to proceed to Year 3 of the programme. In Year 3, students will present the following:

a) a clinical governance project b) a systematic review of a topic related to orthodontics c) two fully documented patient case presentations d) two unseen (diagnostic) cases will also form part of this examination

The third year of the DClinDent programme will be structured over three semesters and during this time the student will be timetabled to four protected academic sessions each week with the remaining time dedicated to primarily independent clinical practice and inter-disciplinary patient management.

The programme offers practical experience in advanced conservation, fixed (conventionally prepared and resin-retained designs) and removable prosthodontics, and implant-supported prostheses for single missing teeth or partially edentulous cases, alongside an introduction to occlusal registration techniques and the range of diagnostic procedures required to ensure effective planning and design of oral reconstructions.

Students undertake modules to the value of 360 credits. All modules are compulsory.

In year one, students complete core modules to the value of (165 credits). In year two, students complete core modules to the value of (105 credits) and a dissertation (90 credits). In year three students complete clinical study (not credit bearing).

Our programme covers the scientific background to implants, fixed and removable prosthodontics, and clinical techniques. You will study anatomy, physiology, histology and pathology of the dental and oral tissues, occlusion, epidemiology and prevention of dental caries and tooth wear, properties of dental materials, and radiology, infection control and audit in relation to prosthodontics.

By the end of our programme, which is formally recognised as part of UK specialist training, you will be a highly knowledgeable professional in prosthodontics at master's level, and proficient and skilful in related areas of restorative dentistry.

UK/EU practising dentists usually attend three days per week over four years. Practising dentists from overseas who have to relocate to take the course will generally attend five days per week over three years.

The programme content is identical across both versions. 

Teaching styles include close mentoring, chairside guidance and small group work that emphasises the importance of the evidence base for prosthodontics in the literature and creates new research opportunities. A research project is also undertaken.

Course format and assessment

Modular programme consisting of 360 credits. Modules are grouped into three distinct types:

  1. Three taught modules, covering the scientific and clinical basis of prosthodontics, assessed by written examination;
  2. Five clinical modules, involving supervised clinical practice and examined by a mixture of case studies on treated and unseen patients, practical, or oral examinations;
  3. One research module, involving the submission of a research project report including a literature review, with an oral defence of the research.

Career prospects

The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh has approved the programme for award of the MRD diploma after completion of specialist training. If you are on a Specialist Advisory Committee (SAC) approved training pathway leading to specialist accreditation, you will undertake additional clinical activity during your tenure that will complete your requirements for specialist certification with the General Dental Council (GDC).

Specialist clinical component

You will be assessed via a variety of formative and summative methods. These include patient logs, submission of clinical and technical skills work, written assignments and structured essay papers, Multiple Short Answer (MSA), Single Best Answer (SBA) and Extended Matching Question (EMQ) papers, Objective Structured Long Examination Record (OSLER), mini-case write-ups and structured oral examinations.

Dissertation

You will also produce a dissertation between 10,000 and 15,000 words in length.

Specialist clinical component (90 credits)

Full-time students attend up to six sessions per week over 45 weeks for the clinical component of the course. Part-time students attend the clinical component for up to three sessions per week in each of the two years.

Teaching & Assessment

This course is taught by staff in the School of Dentistry.

The course is two years long and begins every second year, in September (2012, 2014, 2016 etc), and finishes at the end of June in the second year. Teaching follows the European week, i.e. Mondays to Fridays inclusive.

How you will be taught

Students will attend lectures, seminars and laboratory demonstrations. Students will treat patients under supervision on two half days per week, and carry out some of the laboratory work as advised by course tutors. More than one module may be taught concurrently and clinical work will be undertaken on regular sessions throughout the course.

Provision will be made for personal study time throughout the course and students are expected to make good use of this time to prepare for the assessments and to read widely on the subject of prosthodontics.

What you will study

Every candidate for the Degree shall be required to undertake the prescribed course of study and submit a dissertation. Candidates will be required to present themselves for examination, including oral examination.

The various aspects of fixed prosthodontics will be performed on a phantom head before proceeding to the clinic as it is considered important to thoroughly revise techniques to ensure a high standard of clinical work. This includes endodontics, post preparation, core build-ups and preparations for inlays, crowns, bridges and resin-retained bridges.

There are eight modules, all of which must be completed satisfactorily, together with a research project. The modules and their associated SCQF (the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework) credits are as follows:

How you will be assessed

Assessment will be comprised of a one-hour written short-answer examination for each taught module. Reports of four cases treated by the candidate will be presented to the external examiner at the final examination at the end of the course.

Students carry out a research project related to fixed and removable prosthodontics or dental materials and produce a typed and bound dissertation. This will include a critical review of the literature. It is anticipated that the proportion of time spent on the research project should be approximately 25% of the course.

The results of the module assessments and the logbook of clinical activity will be scrutinised by the examiners.

All components will carry equal weighting and candidates must achieve a pass in all examination.

This course provides good preparation for the MFDS examination of the Royal Colleges but is not approved for eligibility to sit the MRD examination.

The Dublin Dental University Hospital provides a clinical doctorate programme those results in the award of a Doctorate in Dental Surgery (D.Ch.Dent.) from Trinity College Dublin. There are six individual strands, five of which are currently available to applicants:

The three year clinical training programme is recognised as meeting the entry criteria for the speciality FFD examinations held by the Faculty of Dentistry, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.

It is the intention of the courses to develop clinical skills in the light of currently available scientific knowledge. Students are required to attend a course of study and to pass written and clinical examinations throughout the course. There is a significant academic component including design and completion of a research project with the submission of a thesis at Doctorate level at the end of the third year. The thesis will be the subject of a viva voce examination.

The first year of the programme is designed to provide a background in relevant sciences and to develop basic skills within the chosen speciality. The emphasis during the 2nd and 3rd years is on the development of high levels of diagnostic ability, treatment planning, operative skills and patient management.

This programme prepares the student for the clinical practice of prosthodontics at specialist level and provides the basis for continuing professional development after completion of the programme. Students will thoroughly explore the prosthodontic literature and become competent in the clinical/laboratory aspects of fixed and removable prosthodontics, including dental implantology. Students will learn how to diagnose, plan and execute high quality prosthodontic treatment for a range of patients. They will have the opportunity to use state-of-the-art materials and equipment, including CAD-CAM restorations, computer-aided implant placement and fully adjustable articulators. The course explores the use of high strength ceramics and high-aesthetic situations. The Prosthodontic programme works closely with periodontics, especially in treatment planning for implant patients. In addition, students attend multidisciplinary clinics for the treatment of dental trauma, developmental disorders (including hypodontia) and cancer surgery defects.

You’ll use various complementary learning modalities, interacting with colleagues and allied specialties in restorative dentistry to jointly manage patient care. You’ll complete your clinical training in Sheffield’s Charles Clifford Dental Hospital, part of the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. There are 150 dental units with modern facilities for treatment under sedation, a well-equipped dental radiography department, oral pathology laboratories and a hospital dental production laboratory.

We have new modern research facilities and laboratories for tissue culture, molecular biology, materials science and histology- microscopy. All laboratories have dedicated technical support and academic expertise to guide you.

Health clearance

If you’re starting a course that involves exposure to human blood or other body fluids and tissues, you must conform to the national guidelines for the protection of patients, health care workers and students. Before admission to a clinical course we’ll need to check that you’re not an infectious carrier of Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C or HIV and that you do not have tuberculosis. A positive test doesn’t necessarily exclude you from dental training.

Our three-year MSc (Clin) Fixed and Removable Prosthodontics course is designed for dental practitioners who want to further their knowledge of this specialty.

You will develop skills in providing a range of procedures, including complex removable prostheses, implant-supported prostheses, integrated fixed and removable prostheses, and restoration of tooth wear using direct and indirect materials.

You will also gain an insight into clinical and technical skills, contemporary prosthodontic techniques, scientific understanding of fixed and removable prosthodontics, diagnosis and treatment planning and reflective prosthodontic practice.

You will have the option to undertake more extensive treatment plans with further experience in the broader area of restorative dentistry.

Completion of this course will make you eligible to sit the MPros Royal College examination.

In addition, you will develop research planning and implementation skills through the dissertation unit.

Aims

This course aims to:

  • provide you with a comprehensive understanding of the complex issues involved in the scientific basis of fixed and removable prosthodontics;
  • develop your knowledge, skills and attitude to enable critical evaluation and problem solving for prosthodontic problems to allow you to practice independently at the appropriate level;
  • ensure you are competent in the design and interpretation of original clinical research at the forefront of current dental research (including data collection and statistical analysis using appropriate computer software);

Our MSc Prosthodontics programme provides the busy General Dental Practitioner with a part-time educational route to acquire the skills and knowledge to develop your practice, provide an enhanced level of care for your patients and achieve greater professional satisfaction. This programme allows you to develop your clinical skills, deepen your understanding of the evidence underpinning modern prosthodontics and widen your knowledge. Many of our graduates have used the MSc programme as a launchpad towards academic involvement in research and education, or to further specialist training.

MSc programmes at UCLan differ from most other courses in that you will have direct patient contact across the diploma year of the course. In our modern on-campus Dental Clinic we provide the patients, facilities and support to enable you to practice what you have learned. This will allow you to practice techniques and develop your confidence under expert supervision.

Our MSc Prosthodontics programme provides the busy General Dental Practitioner with a part-time educational route to acquire the skills and knowledge required of a Dentist with Special Interest (DwiSI). This programme focuses on contemporary practice, teaching evidence-based principles and systems to ensure an optimal outcome for the patient and practitioner.

During the course (2 years PGDip; 3 years MSc) you will be expected to attend up to 15 study/assessment days per year. Many of these sessions will be within the School of Medicine and Dentistry on the main UCLan Preston Campus, though some sessions will be timetabled in the UCLan Dental Clinic, where you will observe, assist and ultimately lead in clinical treatment. To accompany the study days, much of the course content, including lecture notes, PowerPoint slides, videos of lectures and assignments will be delivered to you via the University’s Blackboard Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) allowing you to both prepare work for study days and undertake additional work independently from your home location.

Work in the early part of the course will comprise plenary lectures and practical sessions in our state-of-the-art phantom head facility and work on pigs heads and similar systems. As you move through the course you will progress to working on live patients under close supervision within UCLan Dental Clinic Facility. Here skills will be developed and assessed through Direct Observations of Procedural Skills (DOPS). The academic underpinning that supports this discipline will be developed though plenary lectures, directed reading and case-based discussions, which you and others in the group will be expected to prepare and lead. Group sizes are generally small (typically 12 per cohort) leading to an informal and supportive learning environment where you can ensure that your own learning needs are being met.

We must of course have assessments and examinations, these are designed to develop and test your core knowledge and skills at regular intervals throughout the programme. Assessments focus on your higher levels skills of diagnosis and planning, rather than simply remembering facts. Typical assessments would include analysis of given clinical cases OSCEs, mini clinical examinations and essays.

You will study 10 taught modules as well as a dissertation module based on your own research project.

By fully engaging in this course, you should be able to:

  • Demonstrate an unbiased, systematic and critical appraisal of contemporary knowledge, and an awareness of current problems and/or new insights, many of which are informed by the latest advances in Restorative Dentistry.
