The master of science in product development is a leadership program designed for engineers, scientists, technical managers, and other experienced professionals who aspire to mid- and senior-level positions associated with product innovation. The program integrates business and engineering courses consistent with cross-functional, end-to-end product development, as well as the systems perspective critical to conceive, create, launch, and support today’s complex product portfolios.

Group project

The group project experience is highly valued by both students and prospective employers. Teams of students work to solve an industrial problem. The project applies technical knowledge and provides training in teamwork and the opportunity to develop non-technical aspects of the taught programme. Part-time students can prepare a dissertation on an agreed topic in place of the group project.

Industrially orientated, our team projects have support from external organisations. As a result of external engagement Cranfield students enjoy a higher degree of success when it comes to securing employment. Prospective employers value the student experience where team working to find solutions to industrially based problems are concerned.

Individual project

Either industrially or academically driven, students select the individual project in consultation with the Course Director. The food industry is experiencing a skills gap in technical and product development roles, while also taking a leading role in driving a public health agenda and producing safe, tasty food which meet our nutritional needs.

This course prepares you for technical and product development roles in the food industry with a strong emphasis on nutrition. It is aimed at students with a background in food science, nutrition, health and wellbeing, exercise science or biological sciences who wish to specialise in food and nutrition and acquire an in-depth understanding of how to apply nutrition principles to food product development and production.

You learn about food production and nutrition in an applied setting, developing core technical skills in our state of the art development kitchens, food and nutrition labs and sensory suite. You apply those practical skills to live briefs with commercial applications provided by our industrial partners such as Morrisons and Cranswick plc.

The course is based on three key strands:

  • a food strand in which you learn about food composition, food legislation and regulations and labelling, product development, food quality management and food technology.
  • a nutrition strand in which you learn about how we metabolise food, our nutritional needs and the impact of nutrition on health and diseases throughout the life cycle.
  • a professional and academic skills development strand in which you apply your learning to both academic research and commercial briefs.

Master's Programme in Design and Engineering has been established by two Estonian leading Educational Centers of Excellence: Tallinn University of Technology and Estonian Academy of Arts, in order to meet current demands in cross-disciplinary professionals.

The aim of the curriculum is to combine the basic competences of engineers and designers to develop the framework for a strong interdisciplinary cooperation. During two years of joint studies a firm base in design and engineering theories will be built and a whole set of professional skills of both disciplines will be developed. This food science degree provides advanced study opportunities that build on your previous experience in an appropriate first degree course enabling the upgrade of existing qualifications, while also developing knowledge and skills.

The course team has particular expertise in food analysis, food microbiology and including food safety, spoilage and fermentations, product development and quality control, as well as an excellent understanding of food sustainability, food policy and nutrition.

Moving to one campus

Between 2016 and 2020 we're investing £125 million in the London Metropolitan University campus, moving all of our activity to our current Holloway campus in Islington, north London. This will mean the teaching location of some courses will change over time.

Whether you will be affected will depend on the duration of your course, when you start and your mode of study. The earliest moves affecting new students will be in September 2017. This may mean you begin your course at one location, but over the duration of the course you are relocated to one of our other campuses. Our intention is that no full-time student will change campus more than once during a course of typical duration.

Five specialisations

The first semester consists of mandatory courses in mechanical engineering, such as fluid power systems, computational mechanics, and deformation and fracture of engineering materials. They are combined with courses in product development and project management.

In the second semester, you may choose among five specialisations:

  • Applied Mechanics – classical and modern applied mechanics with a strong focus on the modelling and simulation of solid mechanics, fluid dynamics and thermodynamics
  • Engineering Design and Product Development – modern and advanced approaches in CAD, design optimisation and product development
  • Engineering Materials – deep knowledge about the behaviour of classical metallic engineering materials but also learn about plastics and new emerging materials

Project course and thesis

Each specialisation has a major project course in the third semester, where you work with industry-related problems and apply knowledge obtained from the specialisation courses. This course prepares you for the master thesis project in the final semester. The thesis is usually written together with a fellow student in close collaboration with a company, either a small local business or a global industrial corporation like Siemens or Scania. The thesis project can also be performed as part of a research project at LiU.

This programme has been designed to provide students with knowledge and understanding of key steps in the development and launch of new ingredients and products to contribute to healthy living and lifestyles. It is based upon the strengths and expertise of staff working in the Faculty of Engineering and Science, e.g. human nutrition and public health, food chemistry and biochemistry, functional foods, marketing and economics, new product and process development, food packaging, food safety and quality management, food legislation, applied food microbiology, creative thinking, sustainability and entrepreneurship.

This programme is aimed at graduates who want to develop a career path in the food industry in the area of product development, for students who have not followed an undergraduate programme in food science or technology, and for professionals working in the food industry who want to participate in the programme, either in a part-time mode or by following a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) route. Students with backgrounds in Biology, Chemistry, Nutrition, Biotechnology and Hospitality are encouraged to join the programme.

This new programme is intended to prepare graduates from a life science or catering background for careers as professional Product Development Scientists, based upon a clear understanding and competency of science-based subjects.

Please note that as part of the compulsory courses below students will sit the Level 3 award in Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) for Food Manufacturing course offered by the Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH).

The MBA is an internationally recognised and respected qualification for managers. Applicants are from both the public and private sectors in the UK and abroad.

The teaching programme is aimed at those who are looking to develop their careers and at 'high flyers' that need an understanding of all the major functions of business providing generalist knowledge for prospective leaders.

​Learning & Teaching​

​Students are allocated a supervisor for their final, 40 credit module, who will provide constructive comment on their work as it develops. Students have access to online as well as standard library facilities. The entire process, from development of a draft research proposal and schedule, through selecting methods and drafting chapters, is supported by the Cardiff School of Management supervisors but managed and implemented by the student.

Assessment

Assessment is via a combination of examinations, assignments, presentations, groupwork and the final project.

Employability & Careers​

There have been developments within the School and Institution to encourage employability. The module in Core Skills in the first semester, for example, has introduced the student to the maintenance of personal records.

Careers events and a Blackboard on-line module allow students opportunities to further their knowledge. "Campus Pack" offers a student the capacity to build their e-portfolio within their online modules. This is designed with the following aims:
- Social Assignments: Empower instructors, academic technologists, and instructional designers to build and implement assignments and activities from a palette of re-usable social media tools including wikis, blogs, journals, podcasts, and templates.

- Social Network and Academic Commons: Implement a secure social network and community for instructors, students, departments, and administrators.

- e-Portfolios: Provide every individual a space and network to create, categorize, assess, and present academic and co-curricular activities with instructors, peers, advisors, or anyone in the world.

- Personal Development Plans: Personal Development Plans (PDP) facilitate the structure necessary for students to reflect upon individual learning, performance, and achievement, and map personal, educational, and career development. Institutions can easily design template profiles to meet the needs of different users and skill set groups.

The Alumni office and the MBA Team have also been developing networks, for example through social media such as Linked In. The success of these networks has been evidenced by the amount of former students currently in contact with the university about their employment, allowing current and former students to form links, and network.

The invitation to join with Merseburg University of Applied Sciences in Germany, to offer a Project Management Summer school is further evidence of the reputation now established and enhances any professional accreditation applications further. In July 2013, a tuition programme was offered, combining theory and practice and adhering to PMI global standards. This summer school opportunity not only offered the opportunity to foster partnerships in Europe alongside valuable learning experiences for students, it was centred on a live project. The project included the subdivisions of Funding, Regional Development and Visitor Centre, marketing strategy and Information systems.
