Evolution never stops and customer expectations on products continue to grow. At the same time, resource consumption for both development and production are expected to decrease to ensure profitable business and a sustainable society.

Specifically, individual companies want to increase their competitive advantage by offering products that stand out from the competition. Moreover, modern development work is typically characterised by multi-disciplinary, international teamwork, as well as efforts to simultaneously consider several issues related to the product and its life cycle.

Product development is a core industrial activity that addresses all of these aspects – it is a multidisciplinary process of identifying and envisaging the needs of the user, company and society, and bringing those needs to life.

Who should apply

The programme is aimed at students with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, automation and mechatronics, industrial economics, industrial design or an equivalent degree, and who is ambitious to help develop the next generation of outstanding product offers.

International students are greatly appreciated, especially during teamwork activities, since they contribute unique experiences and enriching viewpoints. International students typically appreciate the open study climate and easy access to teachers and professors.

Students of this programme acquire knowledge and practical skills to master multi-disciplinary product development while taking all phases of the product life cycle into consideration. The course called “Product Development Project” is the most central part of the programme. Student teams plan and execute a product development project to solve an industrial problem in close collaboration with a partnered company.

Students are also given the opportunity to enrich their knowledge in business development, product innovation and manufacturing, which are the domains most related to product development. Thus, a master’s degree in product development provides a broad competence base, which is suitable for developing a career in R&D for large corporations, business development, start-up entrepreneurship, consultant and research. The program integrates business and engineering courses consistent with cross-functional, end-to-end product development, as well as the systems perspective critical to conceive, create, launch, and support today’s complex product portfolios.

Management Research Method
The learning objective of this course is to enable you to conduct empirical business research in a valid and reliable manner. You learn how to formulate research questions and to identify an appropriate research plan and methodology for the given set of research questions. This includes methodologies how to define unit of analysis and sample as well as methodologies how to collect, analyze and interpret data.

Entrepreneurship: Shaping Entrepreneurial Thinking
This course will enable you to develop entrepreneurial thinking and behaviour and to start your own firm based on your business ideas. Students develop and evaluate business ideas and learn how to develop a compelling business case based on entrepreneurial market research. The course furthermore includes the decision on the appropriate legal form for their new venture and new venture financing.

Classic and Contemporary Readings in Innovation and Entrepreneurship
The course enables students to create two forms of competences. 1) An improved ability to read, question, and form conclusions from research-based literature, and 2) an overview of the central classic and contemporary literature in the field of innovation and entrepreneurship. Together these competencies provide students with the ability to critically evaluate and choose relevant literature in the field of innovation and entrepreneurship.

New Product Development Clinic
The learning objective is to enable you to understand and execute the crucial tasks in the new product development process from idea generation to commercialisation. The course takes a concrete development problem as point of departure. Students will generate ideas for the solution of this problem and then carry out concept testing, prototype development, market assessment and pre-launch activities. Therefore, you will experience all the challenges in the new product development process hands-on. The course will be co-taught with faculty from Aarhus BSS and Aarhus School of Engineering. The teaching method of the course is project-based.

SPECIALISATION COURSES

Appropriating innovation – Managing Intellectual property rights
In this course the aim is to develop an understanding of how intellectual property rights, particularly patents, can be used as tools for technology development. A short introduction to the history and theory of patents is followed by an examination of the use of patents as tools of technology development. The course will also consider the evidence in support of the theory that patents on significant inventions are used to control and block 'downstream' innovation. Furthermore, the course will consider the 'anti-trust'- patent so-called 'interface' and recent changes to policy in favour of patents in the US.

Organising for Innovation
In this course the aim is to develop an understanding of the firm-internal perspective and context on innovation. This includes the formulation of and decision for innovation strategies, organisational structures and designs for innovation, creativity and performance within innovation teams, cooperation between R&D and marketing in the new product development process, champions and promotors of innovation, the management of radical innovation and the measurement of innovation performance.

Open and User-Driven Innovation
Shorter product life cycles and increased technological complexity of new products and services force firms to increasingly open their innovation processes to external sources of innovation. The learning objective of this course is therefore to enable you to understand which relevant sources of innovation exist outside the firm and how a firm can systematically use these external sources as leverage for new product development and for enhancing the innovative capability of a firm. The course includes emerging forms of open and distributed innovation. Specific focus will be given to user-driven innovation, including market orientation in the new product development process, lead user innovation, user communities and user toolkits.

In the third semester you can choose elective courses within your areas of interest. The courses can either be taken at Aarhus BSS during the semester, at the Summer University or at one of our more than 200 partner universities abroad. You can also participate in internship programmes either in Denmark or abroad.

The fourth semester is devoted to the master's thesis. You may choose the topic of the thesis freely and get a chance to concentrate on and specialize in a specific field of interest. The thesis may be written in collaboration with another student or it may be the result of your individual effort. When the thesis has been submitted it is defended before the academic advisor as well as an external examiner.

Programme Assessment

Our friendly and supportive environment uses formal lectures, workshops, and seminars to provide the basis for the development of relevant knowledge, further enhanced by activity-based case studies. We utilise both theory and practice-oriented teaching. Teaching and learning is through weekly half-day sessions, depending on whether you are taking the course full or part-time.

For each unit you will be assessed in a way that will deepen your knowledge of the subjects covered. This will involve you thinking and working in an original way to overcome genuine problems. This food science degree provides advanced study opportunities that build on your previous experience in an appropriate first degree course enabling the upgrade of existing qualifications, while also developing knowledge and skills.

The course team has particular expertise in food analysis, food microbiology and including food safety, spoilage and fermentations, product development and quality control, as well as an excellent understanding of food sustainability, food policy and nutrition.

This expertise is reflected in the range of modules offered in the MSc with analytical facilities available for study and research, and opportunities to be involved in food analysis, food product development and food manufacturing projects.

The Microbiology Research Unit team provides vital support and research topics for the dissertation element of the course and other staff members are involved in food manufacturing consultancy. The structure of the course gives you the essential knowledge and skills for your future career. Professional accreditation

The course is fully accredited by the Institute of Food Science and Technology (IFST). Students are encouraged to join the IFST as associate members and to attend meetings or industrial visits that the Institute organises. They may transfer to full membership after graduation and a period of professional experience. Membership of IFST allows access to specialist publications, meetings and an international network of food scientists and technologists.

Moving to one campus

Between 2016 and 2020 we're investing £125 million in the London Metropolitan University campus, moving all of our activity to our current Holloway campus in Islington, north London. This will mean the teaching location of some courses will change over time.

Whether you will be affected will depend on the duration of your course, when you start and your mode of study. The earliest moves affecting new students will be in September 2017. This may mean you begin your course at one location, but over the duration of the course you are relocated to one of our other campuses. Our intention is that no full-time student will change campus more than once during a course of typical duration.

Teaching

Making the transition to postgraduate-level study can be challenging. Support with making this transition is seen as an important element of this programme.

Support is provided during the programme induction and within the module, Food Product Design and Manufacturing Processes. This support is designed to help you understand the requirements of academic study at postgraduate level, to enhance your skills in academic writing and referencing, and to help you develop the skills necessary to operate professionally, safely and ethically in planning and implementing a master’s-level research project.

By including work-based problem-solving projects and case study exercises this programme emphasises real-world working. This helps to blend theory and knowledge in the context of business, allowing you to develop the skills employers are seeking to set you on a successful career path.

A significant feature of the programme is the inclusion of blended learning to provide a rich and varied learning experience. This also provides additional flexibility if you are in employment.
On campus you have access to a dedicated food product development laboratory and a pilot-scale processing equipment facility, allowing you to gain valuable hands-on experience of food processing and product development. Learning, teaching & assessment

The modules in this programme are delivered with lectures and lab-based tutorials giving a good balance between scientific methodologies and hands-on practice.

There is a heavy emphasis on the use of computational engineering methods and this is reflected in the way the programme is delivered and assessed.

The MBA is an internationally recognised and respected qualification for managers. Applicants are from both the public and private sectors in the UK and abroad.

The teaching programme is aimed at those who are looking to develop their careers and at 'high flyers' that need an understanding of all the major functions of business providing generalist knowledge for prospective leaders.

​Learning & Teaching​

​Students are allocated a supervisor for their final, 40 credit module, who will provide constructive comment on their work as it develops. Students have access to online as well as standard library facilities. The entire process, from development of a draft research proposal and schedule, through selecting methods and drafting chapters, is supported by the Cardiff School of Management supervisors but managed and implemented by the student.

Assessment

Assessment is via a combination of examinations, assignments, presentations, groupwork and the final project.

Employability & Careers​

There have been developments within the School and Institution to encourage employability. The module in Core Skills in the first semester, for example, has introduced the student to the maintenance of personal records.

Careers events and a Blackboard on-line module allow students opportunities to further their knowledge. "Campus Pack" offers a student the capacity to build their e-portfolio within their online modules. This is designed with the following aims:

- e-Portfolios: Provide every individual a space and network to create, categorize, assess, and present academic and co-curricular activities with instructors, peers, advisors, or anyone in the world.

- Personal Development Plans: Personal Development Plans (PDP) facilitate the structure necessary for students to reflect upon individual learning, performance, and achievement, and map personal, educational, and career development. Institutions can easily design template profiles to meet the needs of different users and skill set groups.

The Alumni office and the MBA Team have also been developing networks, for example through social media such as Linked In. The success of these networks has been evidenced by the amount of former students currently in contact with the university about their employment, allowing current and former students to form links, and network.

The invitation to join with Merseburg University of Applied Sciences in Germany, to offer a Project Management Summer school is further evidence of the reputation now established and enhances any professional accreditation applications further. In July 2013, a tuition programme was offered, combining theory and practice and adhering to PMI global standards. This summer school opportunity not only offered the opportunity to foster partnerships in Europe alongside valuable learning experiences for students, it was centred on a live project. The project included the subdivisions of Funding, Regional Development and Visitor Centre, marketing strategy and Information systems.

Content

Please note: This course will run at Level 6, which is equivalent to the final year of a BA Honours degree, and is a preparatory course for students who want to study at postgraduate level, but currently need further knowledge and skills before being eligible for postgraduate study. A one-year conversion course for students who have a 2.1 or higher first degree in an area unrelated to fashion management, this course will enable students who come from different paths of study to progress onto fashion management postgraduate courses or enter employment.

The international student body on the Graduate Diploma Fashion Management, reflects the internationalisation of the fashion industry. Students are encouraged to draw on their own experience to develop a global understanding of the relevant dynamics affecting the fashion industry. Drawing on the field of International Business, Marketing, Operations Management and Creative Management, this inter-disciplinary course will cover a wide range of topics, including the establishment of the fashion industry, its internationalisation drivers, product development and product life cycles, fashion forecasting, fashion marketing and marketing communications with a specific focus on social media, consumer behaviour and fashion branding.

This provides students with a rich and stimulating learning experience from which to progress, culminating in a final project that is self-negotiated and relevant to their future aspirations. Many students progress onto MA study while others move into employment, defining and establishing their roles within the sector including positions in PR, marketing, management and product development.

Structure

The Fashion Language and Context unit (20 credits) enables students to locate their own work within global economic, social, cultural and technological contexts. Students will have the chance to enrich their own understanding by engaging in debate and by exchanging ideas with students across a range of courses within the School of Graduate studies from diverse backgrounds and with expertise in a range of fashion disciplines. This will enable students to share experiences and benefit from interdisciplinary approaches to the subject. The unit is underpinned by English support specifically directed to enable students to fully understand and evaluate language used within these discourses.

The introductory units Fashion Business Environment and Creative Fashion Management will provide a variety of specialist knowledge required as a solid base for study. The second term will build on that knowledge with Fashion Marketing Management. The Fashion Business Project unit will enable you to specialise in your own interests and to research a self-selected topic from three subject areas of management.

Fashion Business Environment (20 credits) will consider strategies and concepts for different types of business from small and medium enterprises to large corporations. Creative Fashion Management (20 credits) looks at key requirements such as innovation, creativity and new product development. A more specialist in depth approach to Fashion Marketing Management (20 credits) will explore branding and marketing communication theories and practices.

The final term offers you the opportunity to specialise in one of three areas of expertise, retailing, marketing and creative management for the final Fashion Business Project (40 credits). This unit enables you to follow your own specific interests and create a project title of your choice with the support and approval of the Course Director.

This programme has been designed to provide students with knowledge and understanding of key steps in the development and launch of new ingredients and products to contribute to healthy living and lifestyles. It is based upon the strengths and expertise of staff working in the Faculty of Engineering and Science, e.g. human nutrition and public health; food chemistry and biochemistry, functional foods, marketing and economics; new product and process development; food packaging; food safety and quality management; food legislation; applied food microbiology, creative thinking, sustainability and entrepreneurship.

This programme is aimed at: graduates who want to develop a career path in the food industry in the area of product development, for students who have not followed an undergraduate programme in food science or technology, and for professionals working in the food industry who want to participate in the programme, either in a part-time mode or by following a continuing professional development (CPD) model.
