The international food supply industry requires high calibre graduates with an understanding of how food can be preserved throughout the distribution chain to ensure the supply of safe, wholesome food. Research has identified that food business priorities focus on increasing marketing, developing new products and investing in new machinery. This course prepares you for a career within the food sector, specialising in food product development, food consumer marketing or retailing roles.
The course is designed to ensure you graduate ready to help food businesses develop. As the food industry grows worldwide, so does the need for staff who demonstrate functional knowledge and skills in combination with managerial and leadership capability. Food organisations need well qualified managers to develop, commercialise and deliver their products to the marketplace efficiently and effectively. This course gives you the skills and experience to meet this need.
You build your knowledge of food processing and safety, product development, marketing and the food chain. You also have opportunities to develop managerial skills, practical skills and behaviour change theories relevant to the food sector.
The work-related learning module gives you a valuable insight into the roles of process or product development technologists, or product account technologists, and the importance of continuing professional development. It also allows you to practically apply the skills you learn during the course.
The placement is an additional opportunity for you to develop your practical skills, either in the UK or abroad. You are supported in securing a placement through a series of employability workshops offered by specialist academic staff. There is also a dedicated postgraduate placement team who manage placement opportunities.

The food industry is experiencing a skills gap in technical and product development roles, while also taking a leading role in driving a public health agenda and producing safe, tasty food which meet our nutritional needs.
This course prepares you for technical and product development roles in the food industry with a strong emphasis on nutrition. It is aimed at students with a background in food science, nutrition, health and wellbeing, exercise science or biological sciences who wish to specialise in food and nutrition and acquire an in-depth understanding of how to apply nutrition principles to food product development and production.
You learn about food production and nutrition in an applied setting, developing core technical skills in our state of the art development kitchens, food and nutrition labs and sensory suite. You apply those practical skills to live briefs with commercial applications provided by our industrial partners such as Morrisons and Cranswick plc.
The course is based on three key strands:
Examples of academic research and commercial projects you work on include developing tasty healthy alternatives, understanding the impact of food labelling on consumer liking, developing a food product for a major food retailer partner (brief varies) or supporting local SMEs with food quality assurance systems.

The textiles industry is continually evolving. Developing new products that meet the needs of a changing market demands a combination of technology and design technology. This programme will give you access to the latest developments across the textile industry to equip you for these challenges.
You’ll receive training in key skills including laboratory practice, problem solving, and reasoning, and you’ll undertake a substantial research dissertation. In addition, you’ll have the chance to specialise in either textile technology or textile design technology, depending on your own interests and career plans. A variety of optional modules will also give you the chance to learn about topics such as medical textiles, or fashion and sustainability.
Taught by experts in one of the UK’s major hubs for textile research, this programme will help you gain the specialist knowledge and skills to build a career in a fast-paced and challenging industry.
We have plenty of facilities to help you make the most of your time at Leeds, including well-equipped laboratories and purpose-built computer clusters so you can build your skills on both PC and Mac.
The course is accredited by the Society of Dyers and Colourists as being equivalent to its ASDC examinations leading to Chartered Colourist (CCol) status. It is also accredited by The Textile Institute at Associate level (CText ATI), this demonstrates a good broad knowledge of textiles and its application, and allows you to apply for Licentiateship (LTI) upon graduation, and Associateship (CText ATI) after one year in industry.
Everyone studies the same compulsory modules throughout the programme, which allow you to become a confident researcher and give you experience of practical lab work in Semester 2. You’ll apply the knowledge and skills that you have gained throughout the course to a substantial piece of independent research, which you’ll submit by the end of the programme in September.
You’ll also have the chance to specialise in the aspects of textiles that interest you by selecting the appropriate pathway.
Textile Design Technology pathway
In the modules on this pathway you’ll learn how to view technology through the eyes of both the designer and the technologist. You’ll gain understanding of how to manipulate technology to design and produce new products and how to maintain and/or improve the desirability of current products.
Textile Technology pathway
You will gain in-depth knowledge of advanced textile technology, textile processes and quality management together with the science, technology and testing of functional textile materials, product development, coloration and finishing processes, medical textiles, nonwovens and performance clothing.
If you choose to study part-time, you’ll study over a longer period and take fewer modules in each year.
We use various teaching and learning methods, including practicals, lectures, seminars and tutorials. Independent study is also vital to this degree, allowing you to develop your skills and prepare for taught sessions so you can make the most of them.
You’ll be assessed by a range of methods including essays and exams as well as practical and project work, reports, literature reviews and presentations.
This degree is designed to equip you with a wide range of knowledge and skills to succeed in careers such as textile management, technical consultancy, and education and training. You’ll also be well prepared to continue with academic research in textiles at PhD level.
If you take the Textile Design Technology pathway, you could work in the industry as designers or in areas, which need an understanding of technology and design e.g. buying, textile product development for apparel, and in various third party testing houses. Moreover, you could work in various textile industries in managerial positions including the retail and supply chain management with major clothing companies and their suppliers.
The Textile Technology pathway will allow you to gain the skills to pursue a career in any of the following fields: technical consultancy; education and training; and academic research in technical textiles. You may also be employed as a product development technologist in specialist fields such as medical textiles, geotextiles and civil engineering materials, aerospace and transport engineering materials, and sport and performance clothing.

This course provides you with the unique opportunity to experience the practicalities and applications of modern Engineering Analysis Techniques. The dedicated IT simulation resources and expertise of our specialised staff, based at our Telford Campus, is well renowned and often called upon to support and advise external agencies and key industries across the aerospace, automotive and automotive sports and power generation sectors. You can therefore rest assured of access to a variety of significant simulation techniques facilities and expertise. Beyond this, the course will encourage and guide you to explore and conduct research into emerging Design and use the latest industry standard simulation software to produce complex, economical and sustainable part/component part production. Our expectation is that the exposure offered by the course, to modern and newly emerging manufacturing technologies coupled with the project managerial aspects of the course will ensure that you are well placed to take up a key role in this dynamic industrial sector.

Throughout the weekly class sessions and through use of the on-line support material, you will obtain skills required to successfully implement and manage a range of modern design and simulation systems, processes and methodologies.
Often working on assessment and project briefs specified by industry practitioners, you will develop solutions to meet real world problems/requirements and be able to present these to your peers, practitioners and third parties in order to obtain balanced and current feedback.
