Format

Placements

If you choose to study with us full time, you will undertake a ten-week placement in a local organisation arranged by the University (or a six-week one if you are working towards the Postgraduate Diploma). This course provides a critical and academic assessment of the Human Resource Management (HRM) approach and its application by employers in international contexts. Particular attention is paid to understanding issues of responsibility and sustainability in HR management, as well as exploring the influence of various forms of business organisations on HR practices. Stirling Management School is committed to the principles of the PRIME* agenda, and the MSc International HRM reflects this engagement by integrating considerations of social responsibility and sustainability issues in the core curriculum.
The curriculum for the MSc International HRM builds on mainstream HRM scholarship to incorporate specialist topics which are regularly updated to ensure topicality and continued relevance. Business today is global and no company can be confident of surviving unless it appreciates this fact and understands its implications.

Multinational corporations are very short of managers from countries other than their domestic base, who have the understanding to operate comfortably in different countries.

Small and medium-sized firms with strong niche positions are also increasingly looking for talented and well-trained staff to help them undertake international expansion. The MSc International Business has been accredited by the Association of MBAs (AMBA). Learning and teaching

Taught modules contribute towards two thirds of your final assessment. The dissertation contributes one third. Modules are assessed using written examinations or coursework. Coursework can take a variety of forms, including reports, essays, group presentations and practical assignments. Some coursework is group based.

In September 2015, the first local career and personal development event took take place, at SIM during the day and then moved to the Singapore Riverboat for the evening session including dinner. All students received feedback on their Emergenetic Profile, advice on a wide range of issues relating to international recruiters and their requirements and were given the chance in the evening, to network with start-up entrepreneurs, angel investors and other business professionals.

This event is now held on an annual basis with a variety of different evening venues planned. Our consultant, Joanna Yeoh, will also put on a half day event every March to cover cv writing and enhancing your personal profile. In the meantime, she is now contracted to offer one to one counselling, particularly where international students aspire to secure employment in Singapore.

The MSc programme is normally studied over one year full-time or two years part-time (one year and one term full-time for January start). You may move between full and part-time modes of attendance. Teaching and Assessment

Each module is delivered over the duration of four full days. It targets both concepts and practical skills that are relevant to industry. A multiple choice (MC) test at the end of the course provides attendees feedback on their achievements and must be passed before continuation of the academic assessment through coursework.

Teaching methods include lectures, tutorials and laboratory work. A strong emphasis is given to real world problems. Assessment is by a combination of coursework, projects, multiple choice and laboratory-based assessments.

You will normally attend 3 hours of timetabled taught sessions each week for each module undertaken during term time, for full time study this would be 12 hours per week during term time. Academic Expertise

The programme is managed and delivered through our renowned Cyber Security Centre and Software Technology Research Laboratory.

The course teams within the Cyber Security Centre have unrivalled expertise in cyber security. The team includes former Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs) of large telecommunications companies, internet banks and cloud service providers, an ex-vice president of one of the largest cyber security companies in the world, information assurance specialists with extensive experience working in various UK defence organisations, leading digital forensics experts and respected government advisors.

Several of the team are regular media commentators on forensics and security. Professional input throughout the course will come from Deloitte and their cyber security professionals.

Facilities

The Cyber Security Laboratories are among the best equipped facilities of this type in the UK. Developed in consultation with leaders in the industry, they are designed to meet the highest forensics and security standards.

The laboratories contain 65 high-spec, specially customised PCs configured with multiple operating systems, virtualisation and removable hard drives, as well as specialised servers, wired and wireless networking equipment and a wide variety of other hardware and software components.

Cyber Security Centre

The laboratories are also the base for our Cyber Security Centre (CSC), a multidisciplinary group of academics and industry experts who focus on a wide variety of cyber security and digital forensics issues. TEACHING

The course is currently delivered in four blocks of three-day intensive study periods, followed by independent study and online support through the University’s virtual learning environment, Blackboard. Each module is taken and assessed over a six week block. 

From September 2017, this delivery format will change. Students will continue to study a single module for a 6 week period. Face to face teaching will be delivered on campus for two half days each week. In addition, you will attend the taught element of the Business Innovation Programme each Wednesday afternoon during the 6 week blocks, with independent study completed in your own time through Blackboard.  Individual student timetables will be provided during induction week.

ASSESSMENT

Over the duration of your course a range of assessment techniques will be used. Types of assessment include; essays, assignments, exams, multiple choice tests, online tests, group reports, and portfolio work. The weighting between exams and coursework varies between modules and years.

EMPLOYABILITY
