This programme is intended for existing health care practitioners or graduates with a science background who wish to work as part of the anaesthetic team.

The Physicians' Assistant (Anaesthesia) is a health professional who will expand the anaesthetic service and make operating theatres work more efficiently. You will work alongside other members of the anaesthetic team and under the supervision of your anaesthetist.

The programme will develop a practitioner role that enables the anaesthesia team to have more staff working differently. Presently in the UK only doctors who have had specialist training in anaesthesia can administer anaesthetics.

The PA(A) is a health professional who will expand the anaesthetic service and make operating theatres work more efficiently. You will work alongside other members of the anaesthetic team and under the supervision of your anaesthetist.

The programme is studied over 27 months full-time which includes 24 months of academic study and clinical training, followed by 3 months of supervised practice.

Students who have satisfactorily completed the 120 taught credits of the Postgraduate Diploma: Physicians’ Assistant (Anaesthesia) will have the option of transferring to the Physicians’ Assistant (Anaesthesia) MSc Programme. Award of the MSc will require the completion of an additional 60 credit Dissertation module, which would take the form of a research project of their own choosing. The MSc is self funded costing £1980 in 2014/2015 (subject to change each year).

This MSc is structured to provide the theoretical, scientific, clinical, research and vocational skills necessary to practice enhanced otology, audiovestibular medicine and audiology. The programme is designed for ENT surgeons, audiovestibular physicians, paediatricians, GPs, neurologists and other trainees and physicians with an interest in the medical aspects of audiology who wish to develop or enhance their careers or specialise in otology.

Degree information

Students will learn about the anatomy and physiology of the vestibulocochlear system and facial nerve, related disorders and pathologies, diagnostic techniques and management strategies in both children and adults. Clinical and surgical placements provide an opportunity to develop specialist skills and competencies in evidence-based medicine, multidisciplinary practice - including facial reanimation and skull base clinics - and translational research and ethics.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits. The programme consists of three core modules (45 credits), five optional modules (75 credits) and a dissertation/report (60 credits). A Postgraduate Diploma, three core modules (45 credits), five optional modules (75 credits), full-time one year, flexible two to five years is offered. Dissertation/report
All students undertake an independent research project which culminates in a dissertation of 10-12,000 words.

Teaching and learning
The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars and observation at accredited clinical placements. Assessment is through a combination of methods including unseen examinations, written assignments (essays and a dissertation), case presentations, clinical portfolios and vivas.

This MSc provides a firm foundation in the practice of audiovestibular techniques and their clinical applications for physicians who wish to enhance their careers or develop a research career in this field. There are also numerous opportunities to work with patients, service users and carers who are involved in classroom teaching sessions.

The course puts assessment at the heart of learning by using clinical scenarios to facilitate problem-solving, critical analysis and evidence-based care. The scenarios act as both the focus for learning and assessment thus embedding assessment within the learning process.

Each of the 6 modules has the same assessment format. Due to the online nature of the course, students are expected to login and participate in the course regularly throughout the module (ideally on a daily basis).

Students are split into groups of 10-15 students and are assigned a dedicated expert tutor who:

Monitors, assesses and marks each student throughout the module.

The Sports and Exercise MSc course provides a progression route for the Postgraduate Diploma in Sports and Exercise Medicine course offered by the University.

The Masters in Sports and Exercise Medicine runs over 1 calendar year. Students undertake an initial 12 week online module to develop their skills in critical appraisal and knowledge of research methodologies. Thereafter they are able to select a 1,500 word proposal and 10,500 word professional project.

On completion of the MSc Sports and Exercise Medicine course, you will be able to demonstrate:

MSc teaching methods for this module of our Sports and Exercise Medicine MSc are similar to the PG Diploma course modules however it is run over 12 weeks.

Module 2 - Professional Project

To produce the professional project, students continue to use the online course however much of the work is self-directed.

Students are expected in the first 8 weeks to interact with their tutor on a weekly basis. Students select a specific project and submit a project summary/proposal (approximately 1500 words).

Once the proposal has been approved, the professional project (10,500 words) itself is then completed through online guidance and supervision offered by the tutor. The student and tutor will interact regularly (weekly) on the dedicated students/tutor discussion area or through any other means of communication deemed appropriate by both parties (telephone/SKYPE/email). Note of any verbal communication with the tutor is recorded on the student's journal by the student.

Teaching and learning
The programmes are part-time, requiring onsite attendance only during the contact days of teaching sessions and tutorials, which include workshop style discussion and practical application 'simulation' sessions. Assessment is through evaluative reports, investigative study proposal and report, a viva during the final course and the dissertation.

UCL regulations require attendance for 70% or more of the module's face to face teaching before a student is eligible to submit the assessment for that module.

Careers

Whilst many clinical practitioners will continue to practise as doctors, this award carries with it the opportunity to develop a formal role in either undergraduate or postgraduate education. The Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO) calls family doctors "our rising stars of the future". This reflects WHO’s renewed commitment to build family medicine as a specialty across all regions. Strengthening family medicine has been recognized as a key component of achieving Universal Health Coverage as part of the Sustainable Development Goals to which every country committed at the last United Nations General Assembly. This degree aims to build on this momentum for strengthening primary care by developing competent family physicians who are empowered to become leaders and advocates for the future of the profession.

The University of Edinburgh provides high quality postgraduate medical education in through an online distance learning format. Students are from a variety of countries across the world, each bringing their unique experiences to create a vibrant global learning community. The programme will give doctors the essential medical knowledge and management skills for the common presenting health issues and explore management within the context of the principles, processes, and practices of family medicine. The programme will equip students with the skills to become expert family physicians whose approach will provide continuous, coordinated, comprehensive and cost effective care build around an understanding of the patient in the context of the family and the community.

The degree is awarded by the University of Edinburgh and is taught in partnership with the Christian Medical College, Vellore, India. Experienced members of the International Christian Medical and Dental Association (ICMDA) are also involved in delivering teaching and supervising students.

Online learning

This blended distance learning programme is delivered via the Moodle platform with the support of our partner institution CMC Vellore, India. Students have access to comprehensive learning materials as well as the University of Edinburgh’s library resources. Online tutorials are delivered regularly by experts in the field.

Programme structure

There are seven compulsory courses and a dissertation. Courses cover:
•Family Medicine 1: Introduction to Family Medicine
•Family Medicine 2: Non-communicable disease
•Family Medicine 3: Child and Maternal Health
•Family Medicine 4: Special groups of patients (including mental health, geriatrics and palliative care)
•Principles and Practice 1: Professionalism and Roles and Responsibilities of the Family Physician
•Principles and Practice 2: Communication/consultation skills, Health Informatics, Ethics, Leadership and Quality Improvement.
•Evidence Based Medicine

The dissertation provides the opportunity for the student to undertake an extended piece of scholarship in an area of personal interest and is undertaken in the last few months of the programme.

The online teaching is complemented by a two week period of face-to-face teaching each year. This builds on the online content and provides practical clinical training. This teaching is currently delivered in four sites across the world: India, Nigeria, Uganda and Egypt. Attendance provides the unique opportunity to travel and view the practice of Family Medicine in other countries whilst meeting and learning from fellow students.

In addition there is the opportunity to participate in a 30 days clinical internship following completion of the Masters qualification. This is an optional activity aimed at providing additional clinical experience to those who have completed the course.

Career opportunities

The programme is aimed to provide doctors with the knowledge, skills and attitudes to become effective Family Physicians. It is relevant to doctors of all backgrounds and experience from early career doctors to those established in other specialities.

The programme provides a high quality Masters level qualification in Family Medicine and builds on the skills already gained by the student in their post graduate clinical training. It is not a recognised vocational training course and cannot be used for direct entry to clinical practice as a Family Physician.

Our Postgraduate Diploma in Physician Associate Studies is delivered within the University’s Institute of Medical Sciences at the Medway campus where students have the added benefit of training in a specialist facility with qualified medical practitioners engaged in postgraduate education and research.

You will spend a significant portion of the first year in the simulation suite learning hands on skills. The simulation suite is equipped with mock wards as well as a surgical suite with anesthesia and laparoscopic equipment. Highly sophisticated human simulation models will be used in the teaching of hands on skills to prepare you for your second year clinical based modules.

Course detail

The Physician Associate curriculum begins with a year of rigorous medical science, pharmacology and clinical reasoning taught by a qualified team of specialist physicians and Physicians Associates. One day per week in the first year is spent in a general practice clinical setting. The second year is comprised of six specialist clinical placements and intensive classroom teaching in advanced skills and concepts.

Upon successful completion of the Postgraduate diploma in Physician Associate Studies, you are eligible to take the National Exam for Physician Associates and be part of the Physician Associate Managed Voluntary Registry (PAMVR) which allows you to be employed by the NHS. The profession is currently working towards regulation in the UK and is overseen by the Royal College of Physicians Physician Associate Faculty.

All modules are taught using a combination of teaching methods, including lectures, problem based learning, short case review and hand on/skills practice.

Lecture, practice based learning, case review and skills application are incorporated in each module to ensure students assimilate clinical knowledge and skills in all areas.

Suitability

The course is aimed at people interested in pursuing a healthcare career in a primary care setting or almost any medical specialty.

This course is for doctors, nurses, allied health professionals and pharmacists with an interest in diabetes care. It aims to develop the scientific basis for improvement in diabetes clinical practice and public health using robust epidemiological, evidence based and social science methodologies.

Diabetes is becoming an increasingly common condition among every population group, both in the developed and developing countries. It has a major impact on the physical, psychological and general wellbeing of individuals and their families. It can lead to disabilities, for example blindness, chronic morbidity, and mortality through heart disease, stroke and renal failure. Yet, there is evidence that effective treatment can increase life expectancy, reduce the risk of complications and even delay or prevent onset. This course will prepare you to take an evidence-based approach to diabetic care and will allow you to specialise in an area of your choice. It has been developed with clinical colleagues and blends the theoretical perspectives with practicalities of implementing an effective diabetic care programme. This course emphasises the effective use of multidisciplinary teams in problem solving and patient care.

Delivered through online learning, the course is ideal for international students who wish to study the international dimension of diabetes and apply the principles to care in developing countries.

Teaching, learning and assessment

A range of student-centred e-learning methods including online tutorials are utilised. Your performance will be assessed by systematic reviews, presentations and posters.

Teaching hours and attendance

Both the full-time and part-time routes are taught by distance e-learning. The fulltime route allows the student to complete the online programme over one year, and would probably be best suited for students in part-time employment. The part-time route allows you to space your studies out over a longer period of time to suit your needs and there is flexibility in which modules you undertake each year. On average you will be required to spend approximately 150 hours of study per module depending on credit rating.

Podiatric surgery has developed rapidly over the last 15 years as a post-registration professional development, and provides the podiatrist working within the NHS or in private practice with the opportunity to extend their scope of practice to include surgical management of foot and ankle pathologies. This course provides the podiatrist with the theoretical underpinning required to pursue this career route. The modular course is a collaborative initiative offered in partnership with Glasgow Caledonian University.

Teaching, learning and assessment

A range of student-centred learning methods including tutorials, seminars and experimental laboratory classes are utilised. Your performance will be assessed by a variety of methods including course work and examination. Class sizes are normally around 10-15.

Teaching hours and attendance

This course is delivered by attendance and by online learning. You will generally be required to attend QMU/ Glasgow Caledonian University a few days a week to participate in classes. You will also be required to carry out additional self directed independent work. Your exact attendance (days and hours) at QMU/GCU will depend on which module you are studying. WHAT IS A PHYSICIAN ASSOCIATE?

Physician associates support doctors in the diagnosis and management of patients. As a physician associate, you might work in a GP surgery or be based in a hospital, but wherever you work, you'll have direct contact with patients.

You’ll be trained to perform a number of day-to- day tasks including:
-Taking medical histories
-Performing examinations
-Diagnosing illnesses
-Analysing test results
-Developing management plans

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Following successful graduation from this Diploma course, you will need to sit the National Assessment for Physician Associates, set by the Faculty of Physician Associates at the Royal College of Physicians, London.

Passing the National Assessment will allow you to be put onto the National Register for Physician Associates, so that you can practise clinically in the UK.

EDUCATIONAL AIMS OF THE PROGRAMME

The overarching educational aim of the programme is to train graduates with a first degree in Biosciences, Life Sciences or Health Sciences, or suitable approved programme, to Post Graduate Diploma level, to function as a qualified physician associate (on passing the National Examination).

Physician associates will be able to:
-Deliver holistic medical care and treatment under defined levels of supervision, in acute and primary care settings in the National Health Service.
-Work effectively with patients and multi-disciplinary healthcare teams from diverse backgrounds.
-Use a patient-centred approach, and be expert communicators, ensuring patient safety at all times
-Promote health and wellbeing on an individual and population basis

This training includes the necessary knowledge, skills and professional attitudes needed to work to the medical model, demonstrating safe medical practice, medical competence, compassion, reflective and critical thinking in diagnostic reasoning and clinical management.

Graduates will be able to assess, diagnose and manage medical problems competently, consulting with patients presenting with a variety of specified conditions on behalf of, and under supervision of a senior experienced doctor.

They will be able to understand and demonstrate the principles of safe and effective prescribing.

Graduates will be trained to a standard defined by the National Examination for Physician Associates that will enable them to work as physician associates in the National Health Service, with appropriate accreditation and regulation once these have been decided and implemented.
