The track Work and Organizational Psychology concentrates on sciencebased solutions to human problems in work and organizational settings. It aims to understand how to achieve each of the following objectives: optimizing performance, improving processes and relationships, enhancing fairness and equity, and increasing subjective well-being.

The European Network of Work and Organizational Psychology (ENOP) developed a reference model and standards for a curriculum in Work & Organizational Psychology. According to the ENOP model, the main areas to be considered are Work, Organizational and Personnel Psychology. The track Work and Organizational Psychology adheres to these standards as far as possible, and offers a study program that deals with the most important topics in Work & Organizational Psychology at the individual, task, group and organizational level.

The program

Work and Organizational Psychology is a field with both a strong scientific base and an applied orientation. Thus, the program connects psychological theory and application whereby theoretical concepts are shown to lead to useful interventions. In each of the areas of Work, Organizational and Personnel Psychology, the program seeks to develop two types of knowledge and skills: explanatory and intervention.

Explanatory refers to theory devoted to the explanation of (the context of) human behavior and to diagnostic skills in work, organization, and personnel fields. This will prepare you to assess, diagnose, explain, and interpret phenomena and processes in the areas of work, organizations and personnel.

Intervention refers to change theory and intervention skills in work, organizational and personnel settings. This will prepare you to plan, implement, monitor, and evaluate changes and interventions to improve behaviors, situations, and social processes in the fields of work, organizations, and personnel. This type of knowledge also prepares you to design new models, methods, and tools. The two types of knowledge and skills will be integrated as much as possible within the various courses.

Career Perspective Social Psychology

With an MSc in Social Psychology, you can work in positions at an academic level in research, communication, policy, consulting, human development and organization development in private, semi-private or governmental organizations. With this MSc, you are able to conduct theoretical and applied research to advance scientific knowledge in the areas of social, economic and work and organizational psychology. You are also able to contribute to many applied fields, because you will be able to develop tools and interventions to solve practical problems in the areas of social, economic and work and organizational psychology and to research the effectiveness thereof.

The Industrial-Organizational (I-O) Psychology program at the University of Guelph is unique in Canada because of our balanced approach to graduate education. It will not only prepare you to undertake research for your own dissertation, but will also equip you to be able to evaluate research results and reports more widely.

Our research interests include: selection and assessment; training; organisational communication; organisation studies and organisational sociology; well-being and emotion; technology development and organisational change; human resource management; employment and psychological contracts; pay; careers and innovation. We also have expertise in, and are committed to, both qualitative and quantitative research techniques.

The Master of Applied Positive Psychology (MAPP) program at the University of Pennsylvania was the first in the world to offer a degree in this rigorous field of study. Courses and Curriculum

The Master of Applied Positive Psychology (MAPP) curriculum is designed to train you in the history, theory and research methods of positive psychology, as well as its application in professional settings.

The program consists of nine courses, completed during one year of full-time study during consecutive fall, spring and summer semesters.

During the fall semester, you will begin the program with courses that focus on the science, research and theoretical underpinnings of positive psychology, giving students a strong foundation to build on throughout the remainder of the program.
The spring semester courses offer content to help you learn how to apply positive psychology in various professional settings, including creating a plan for positive interventions in a real organization.
The capstone project, which is completed during the summer semester, allows you to integrate what you’ve learned throughout the program, and apply it in the professional or research domain most significant to you. It often serves as a stepping stone to the application of positive psychology in a particular professional domain or to further research in a specific area.
The curriculum includes the following eight classes, in addition to the capstone project:

Introduction to Positive Psychology
An introduction to the research, theory and intellectual history of positive psychology.

Research Methods and Evaluation
A methodology course exploring the valid and reliable assessment of positive emotions, character strengths and meaning in life.

Foundations of Positive Interventions
An investigation into the theoretical, empirical and experiential nature of positive interventions.

Approaches to the Good Life
An examination of four perspectives on human flourishing.

Applied Positive Interventions
A service-learning course in which students study the applied work of master positive psychology practitioners and create positive psychology applications for non-profit organizations.

Positive Psychology and Individuals
An exploration of positive psychology applications in coaching, clinical and other relational settings.

Positive Psychology and Organizations
An exploration of positive psychology, appreciative inquiry and positive organizational scholarship in traditional and social business settings.

Humanities and Human Flourishing
An exploration of integrating culture and science to support the deeper understanding and more effective cultivation of human flourishing.

Capstone

The capstone project is a distinguishing feature of the Master of Applied Positive Psychology program, blending academic and professional experiences and serving as the culmination of your work in the program. Through the capstone project, you will explore, in depth, the theories and practical applications you’ve learned in the program, to advance the field of positive psychology itself. Previous capstone projects have included empirical studies, literature reviews, book prospectuses, workshops and other endeavors.

The capstone is completed during the summer semester and has no on-site course requirements. You will conduct this project work independently, with your advisor’s ongoing guidance, in a setting that is significant to you and most relevant to your future professional goals.

The members of Brain and Cognitive Science are interested in the mental processes and brain structures that are involved in movement, perception, learning, memory and understanding language. We study how these capabilities emerge during infancy, how they change as the brain matures and ages, and how they are affected when the brain is injured. Our goal is to understand behaviour and cognition at the level of neurons, networks of neurons and cognitive systems.

Industrial/ Organizational Psychology

Industrial-Organizational Psychology is concerned with individual behaviour, the behaviour of groups and the relationships of organization-wide variables to individuals and groups in work settings. Research in Industrial-Organizational Psychology includes, but is not limited to: job analysis and evaluation, selection, training and performance appraisal of personnel, the structure and context of organizations, organizational culture, organizational change, career development, motivation, job satisfaction, and team dynamics.

The Industrial/Organizational Specialization is recognized by the Department of Psychology and Faculty of Graduate Studies - it is an official specialization that will be noted on students' degree parchments.

In our progam, you learn about economic and psychological reasoning and theories and how to apply them in order to understand decisions and motivation behind consumption and other economic behavior in daily life. You develop an understanding of the basic principles of the psychology of economic behavior and, as such, our graduates become experts on consumer behavior, financial behavior, negotiation and bargaining. The focus of the program is on basic theories of economic behavior, basic theories of consumer behavior, and more specific courses on marketing and money. Our core curriculum focuses on the integration of psychological and economic theories and practice, consisting of four unique courses is a minimum to ensure this and to prepare you for a career in which you will collaborate with economists, marketers and business researchers.

Economic Psychology

The track Economic Psychology is embedded in the Master's program Social Psychology. Economic Psychology studies the psychological mechanisms that underlie consumption and other economic behaviors. It is an area where psychology and economics intersect. It deals with economic preferences, choices, decisions, and factors influencing these, as well as the consequences of economic decisions.

Career Perspective Social Psychology

With an MSc in Social Psychology, you can work in positions at an academic level in research, communication, policy, consulting, human development and organization development in private, semi-private or governmental organizations. With this MSc, you are able to conduct theoretical and applied research to advance scientific knowledge in the areas of social, economic and work and organizational psychology. Program Duration
Students enter the Organizational Behavior master’s program with a bachelor’s degree and a minimum of two years of professional work experience and complete the 34-unit program in 17 months. Students take courses once a month in an executive, weekend format. Most students begin the program in the spring, however, students who wish to enroll in the fall do so in consultation with the Program Director.

CSPP is a member school of the Organization Development Education Association, a sub-group of the National Organization Development Network (ODN). With this membership, students in the program become members of ODN and receive all benefits provided by the association.

Joint Master's Degree
Students in the Clinical Psychology doctoral program may pursue a joint program and earn the MA in Organizational Behavior during their doctoral studies. This is particularly helpful for students who are interested in pursuing administrative positions or doing organizational work as part of their career.

The joint program requires 24 units of organizational course work and 6 units may be transferred from the primary program. The international trip is optional.
