◾Mechanical Engineering is a core engineering discipline that has a long history in the University of Glasgow, dating back to the 1760’s and includes famous people as James Watt.
◾If you have a mechanical engineering background, but with little management experience and are wanting to develop your knowledge of management while also furthering your knowledge of mechanical engineering, this programme is designed for you.
◾You will learn to understand management principles and practices in an engineering environment, evaluate engineering information, and apply business and management tools. You will combine engineering and management knowledge and skills in projects and problem solving.
◾The programme is split into two semesters and a summer session. One semester will be based in the Business School and is aimed at developing knowledge and skills of management principles and techniques. An applied approach is adopted, with an emphasis on an informed critical evaluation of information, and the subsequent application of concepts and tools to the core areas of business and management.
◾During the other semester there will be a combination of compulsory and optional courses that will combine to provide the required credits in Mechanical Engineering.
◾In the summer session, a project will be undertaken by MSc students. The topic of the project can be either in Management, or Mechanical Engineering, in which case the topic will usually be closely allied with the research interests of the Discipline.
◾This programme has a September and January intake.

Projects

◾To complete the MSc degree you must undertake a project worth 60 credits. This is an integral part of the MSc programme and many have a technical or business focus.
◾You will gain first-hand experience of managing an engineering project through the integrated systems design project, allowing development of skills in project management, quality management and accountancy.
◾The project is an important part of your MSc where you can apply your newly learned skills and show to future employers that you have been working on cutting edge projects relevant to the industry.
◾You can either choose a topic from a list of MSc projects in Mechanical Engineering or the Management portion of your degree. Alternatively, should you have your own idea for a project, department members are always open to discussion of topics.
◾Students who start in January must choose an engineering focussed project.

◾In addition to providing an in-depth area in engineering, the programme aims to give graduate engineers with little or no Management experience, the opportunity to develop the knowledge and skills needed for modern engineering or technology management.

Teaching and learning

The Construction Project Management MSc is a full time course which is studied over 12 months, starting in September each year. The course comprises eight taught course units, each worth 15 credits, and a research dissertation worth 60 credits. Students on this particular MSc study four core units fundamental to project management, and which are shared by students on the other MSc courses. In addition, the Construction Project Management Professional Practice unit is programme specific unit which is designed to simulate the major challenges to delivering a successful construction/civil engineering project through the medium of a `live' case study approach. Students must also select three option units and carry out a Construction Project Management based dissertation.

Assessment of the taught part of the programme is via a combination of formal written examinations and coursework assignments, which will include group work and oral presentations. Some assessment is based on online material provided by the Association for Project Management (APM) and PRINCE2 (a process-based method for effective project management).

Graduates of the Construction Project Management MSc are highly regarded by industry. Accrediting organisations

The MSc in Construction Project Management is listed by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM) as an Approved Further Learning Scheme for Chartered Engineer. The JBM represents the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Institution of Structural Engineers, the Institution of Highways and Transportation and the Institute of Highway Incorporated Engineers. This means that successful completion of the MSc will enable applicants with an accredited first degree at BEng level to become chartered engineers.
The School has a Partnership arrangement with the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and this MSc is accredited by the RICS Project Management Faculty.

Many engineering projects are now undertaken by multidisciplinary teams who are responsible for the whole project life cycle in a multi-project or programme management environment. Typically, these projects are becoming increasingly complex. As a result, team members are expected to have a range of project management skills, including contractual knowledge, financial engineering competency and strategic awareness.

This programme allows you to develop your knowledge of the entire project management process, from inception and feasibility, engineering, procurement and implementation through to commissioning and operation. Particular emphasis is placed on financial, planning and management aspects of the project life cycle, to equip you with the range of skills you’ll need to make a major contribution at every stage of a project.

We have all the specialist software you’ll need for your programme, and you’ll have access to a dedicated study suite for Masters students.

Accreditation

This degree is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators as meeting the requirements for Further Learning for a Chartered Engineer (CEng) for candidates who have already acquired a partial CEng accredited undergraduate first degree.

This course is also accredited by EUR-ACE, the European quality label for engineering degree programmes at Bachelor and Master level.

Course content

You’ll gain a thorough understanding of a range of topics affecting how construction and engineering projects are managed. In addition to the tools and techniques that are used by project managers, you’ll examine the issues and challenges they currently face and consider them in a “whole life project” context. You’ll look at topics such as project cash flow, risk management, project appraisals and stakeholder relationship management among many others.

You’ll also focus on key topics such as project funding, especially for major infrastructure projects, as well as procurement management and supply chain issues. The process of value engineering, the concepts of value management and risk management will also be covered in depth.

Over the summer months you’ll work with your supervisor to complete your independent research project – a chance to demonstrate the knowledge and skills you’ve gained and perhaps specialise in an area that relates to your career ambitions.

The MSc Engineering Management course has been specifically designed to allow you to update, extend and deepen your understanding of engineering and management.

You will build on your current knowledge of subjects such as solid modelling and prototyping, computer aided design and engineering data analysis, whilst developing management and entrepreneurial skills that will enhance your career opportunities within engineering and the broader business environment.

In the second year, for one semester, you’ll undertake an internship, study in another country or join a research group. This valuable experience will enhance your employability and further develop your theoretical and practical skills.

Internship

This option offers the opportunity to spend three months working full-time in one of the many companies/industries with which we have close links. You may be able to extend this over more than one semester in cases where it is adjacent to a vacation period. We will endeavour to help those who prefer this option to find and secure a suitable position but ultimately we are in the hands of the employers who are free to decide who they take into their organisation.

Research

If you take this option, you will be assigned to our Engineering, Physics and Materials Research Group. There is every possibility that you may contribute to published research and therefore you may be named as part of the research team, which would be a great start to a research career.

Study Abroad

We have exchange agreements with universities all over the world, including partners in Europe, Asia, the Americas and Oceania. If you take the Study Abroad option you will spend a semester at one of these partners, continuing your studies in English but in a new cultural and learning environment. Please note that this option may require you to obtain a visa for study in the other country.

With the increasing complexity of the engineering sector there is a requirement for engineering managers to be specialised not just in engineering, but also in wider business and management. Teaching And Assessment

The structure of this course has been designed to focus on engineering issues and processes, and how they apply to those in management positions.

This course incorporates six taught modules: research methods, project, programme and portfolio management; project change, risk and opportunities management; technology entrepreneurship and product development; engineering management data analysis and sustainable development for engineering practitioners.

Throughout the duration of this course you will build core skills in key areas such as management, business, finance and computing, providing you with a strong understanding of the day-to-day processes that underpin the smooth running of a successful organisation.

This course is primarily delivered by lectures and supporting seminars such as guided laboratory workshops or staffed tutorials. Assessments are undertaken in the form of exams, assignments, technical reports, presentations and project work. The Advanced Practice semester will be assessed via a report and presentation about your internship, study abroad or research group activities.

On completion of all taught modules you will undertake a substantial piece of research around a subject of particular interest to you and your own career aspirations.

Throughout the duration of your course you will have access to our dedicated engineering laboratories that are continuously updated to reflect real-time industry practice.

Our facilities include mechanical and energy systems experimentation labs, rapid product development and performance analysis, materials testing and characterisation, 3D digital design and manufacturing process performance.

You will be given the opportunity to get hands-on with testing, materials processing, moulding, thermal analysis and 3D rapid manufacture to help you create the products and systems required for the projects you will work on during your course.

Competency in project management has become a key part of the skills-set of every construction professional and executive, with many construction project managers functioning in a strategic and co-ordinating role in the delivery of the client’s physical development and investment programme.

Society continues to value and shape the built environment resulting in both public and private investment in construction assets and the successful completion of construction projects. As these projects become more socially and technically complex in a changing world dominated by a concern for sustainability, there has been a growing challenge to develop existing and new skills and expertise in construction project management. This challenge is not only national but global as the need for construction project management skills continues to grow internationally. Indeed, our student cohorts reflect this global challenge with students from across multiple continents.

We have been running programmes in MSc Construction Project Management for nearly 20 years. This arose from the need to extend the managerial remit to those activities that fall outside the construction phase to include areas such as financing, design and hand-over. This module introduces managers to a wide range of tools and technologies appropriate for their role and projects. The module covers a range of topics including project information flows, e-business, database technologies, emerging technologies, building information modelling technologies, groupware and collaborative systems.

- Research and Communication
The aims of this module are to provide the student with an overview of sources of information in construction; to explain to students how to conduct a literature review and introduce students to the principal methods of investigation in construction research; and provide an opportunity for each student to develop professional and academic skills in oral and written communication.

- Principles of Design and Construction
This module teaches students the fundamental principles of managing a project during the design and construction phases. The module develops knowledge and understanding of the role and principles of the estimating, tendering and planning of construction projects and the importance of health and safety in relation to design and construction activities.

Students will gain an understanding of construction project management principles and theory. The aim of this module is to introduce students to the fundamental concepts of strategic management and the tools for formulating and implementing strategies within the construction sector. The application of strategic management tools to develop appropriate change strategies will be explored and fundamental skills in communication, negotiation and leadership will be developed.

- People and Teams
Students will gain a knowledge and understanding of the key fundamental management principles and theory (such as motivation, teamwork, leadership, task management) and how they can be applied to managing people within the context of the construction project environment. Students will also be able to analyse current theoretical approaches to people management, appreciate importance of ethics and cultural issues and evaluate the key factors driving HRM systems.

- Procurement and Contract Procedure
This module aims to develop students understanding of procurement methods, different forms of contract and contract practice. The module is designed to give students key practical skills including advising clients on appropriate procurement and tendering methods; selecting the most appropriate form of construction contract; and manage a construction contract effectively.

- Business Economics and Finance
Students will gain a sound understanding of macro, meso and micro economics and types, sources and management of finance relating to construction organisations and projects. This will allow students to analyse the policies and operations of construction organisations and projects from an economic perspective to determine likely performance consequences and analyse corporate financial data for investment prospects and business management decisions.

- Federated 3D Building Information Modelling (BIM)
The creation, deployment and use of aggregated and integrated models are key goals of collaboration through BIM. This module aims to deliver hands-on practical skills on the use of BIM technologies (i.e. design software and collaboration tools) for real-time co-creation and data sharing of federated/aggregated 3D BIM models. The concept of shared situational awareness within design teams/processes will be explored.

Previous students have gone on to work for a variety of organisations nationally and internationally. These include Arup, Atkins, BAM Nuttall Ltd, Balfour Beatty, Kier Group, Morgan Sindall, Skanska and Transport for London. Many of these organisations engage with the University in both collaborative research and in delivering lectures on the courses. Scholarships and bursaries

The University offers over 100 scholarships each year to new self-financing full-time international students who are permanently resident in a county outside the European Union. September entry students have a choice of management dissertation topics in addition to electronics and electrical engineering projects, and January entry students have a choice of electronics and electrical engineering projects.

◾To complete the MSc degree you must undertake a project worth 60 credits. This is an integral part of the MSc programme and many have a technical or business focus.
◾The project will integrate subject knowledge and skills that you acquire during the MSc programme.

The complex challenges faced in modern engineering have created a growing need for highly motivated graduates who understand project infrastructure planning, construction, management and maintenance issues.

This MSc course equips you with the knowledge, creativity and transferable skills required by project managers in the industry – developing your independent learning abilities and providing a foundation for your ongoing professional development.

You will learn current theories and practices for managing contemporary engineering projects from inception to completion – and for maintaining the resulting infrastructure throughout its lifetime.

Aims

Engineering is at the core of a successful economy and the infrastructure it develops directly affects the wellbeing of its citizens and the environment. Skilled, qualified project managers have a key role in this vital work.

There are two main challenges facing the engineering and construction industry:

1. Clients are increasingly requiring contractors to deliver projects using limited resources, at low cost, in short duration and to a high level of quality and safety
2. Much existing infrastructure is under severe strain due to a legacy of inadequate maintenance and rapid population growth.

The course examines these commercial pressures and will provide opportunities for students to develop and demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:

- The principles of strategic planning and risk analysis in successful project and infrastructure management
- The theoretical basis for the organisation of project infrastructure development and how management of budgets, human resources and supply chains can affect overall project success
- The interplay between engineering project, infrastructure management and sustainability in the complex real-world situations.

The programme develops students' technical knowledge and transferable skills sought by employers, equipping them with the compulsory attributes to flourish in senior roles within the engineering and construction sector.

Course Content

The taught element of the course includes eight modules which approximates to 150 learning hours. For full-time mode of study, the programme is taken over 12 months. The eight modules will be taught over the first eight months (from October to May) and during the final four months (June to September), students will undertake a project dissertation.

The individual project gives you the opportunity to undertake original research in the field of engineering project and infrastructure management. The preparatory work for the project is undertaken together with the taught modules over the first two semesters, under a research methods module, whilst the summer period is being devoted to the actual project dissertation.

Teaching

Formal lectures are used to deliver course materials and are supported by structured seminars and problem solving sessions to develop your knowledge and cognitive skills. The lectures give a broad overview of the main concepts and principles you need to understand, providing you with a framework on which to build and expand your knowledge on through private studies.

The application of theory and strengthening of knowledge of taught material is achieved through computing sessions, field trips and group projects. The latter is aimed particularly at enhancing your teamwork skills.

Our well resourced computing laboratories allow you to develop your knowledge and experience of appropriate planning and management software packages - and to apply this to project and infrastructure management problems. You also have access to computers outside scheduled laboratory sessions to allow you to learn at your own pace and time.

Learning from real-world examples forms a significant part of the course. You will visit project sites to understand the challenges and solutions of modern engineering projects.

Our staff are active in research and maintain close contact with industry to ensure that course materials are up-to date with commercial needs. We also invite leading industry figures to the University as guest speakers.

You will also be allocated a personal tutor who will be available to provide academic and pastoral support during the whole duration of your course.

Assessment

Each of the taught modules is assessed either by formal examination, an assignment, or a balanced combination of the two. Methods of assessing assignments include essay, individual/group report, oral presentation and short test.

Information on assignments in terms of the aims, learning outcomes, assessment criteria and submissions requirements are clearly specified at the beginning of the academic year. Detailed feedback on assignment is provided to students to assist them in achieving the required learning outcomes.

The research project is assessed by dissertation and oral presentation. You will be assigned to a project supervisor who will provide you with a one-to-one supervision on your work. The research project gives you the opportunity to take what you have learnt and to explore and develop specific interests by applying it to your own piece of research, which makes it possibly the most fulfilling aspect of the course.

Special Features

This MSc programme has been specially designed to develop graduates and practising engineers and position them at the forefront of managing and leading these developments.

The course explores very current, 21st century issues around risk management, planning and programming, cost control, people and information management, contract/procurement management and sustainability. We receive input for the course from industrial partners and students get to understand project management at work through site visits.

Modules on project finance, risk, procurement and contract management, supply chain strategy, will underpin modules focusing on sustainable project, infrastructure and environmental management.

Students’ skills in gathering and understanding complex information from a variety of sources (including engineering, scientific and socio-economic information) will be developed in a module on advanced research methods. Issues relating to risk and health and safety will be developed in more specialist modules.

The structure of this course has been designed to focus on engineering issues and processes, and how they apply to those in management positions.

This course incorporates six taught modules: research methods, project, programme and portfolio management; project change, risk and opportunities management; technology entrepreneurship and product development; engineering management data analysis and sustainable development for engineering practitioners.

Throughout the duration of this course you will build core skills in key areas such as management, business, finance and computing, providing you with a strong understanding of the day-to-day processes that underpin the smooth running of a successful organisation.

This course is primarily delivered by lectures and supporting seminars such as guided laboratory workshops or staffed tutorials. Assessments are undertaken in the form of exams, assignments, technical reports, presentations and project work.

On completion of all taught modules you will undertake a substantial piece of research around a subject of particular interest to you and your own career aspirations.

The MSc in Commercial Project Management prepares students for a professional role in the management of commercial projects by providing students with an understanding of the both the people-related and technical requirements necessary for the successful management of projects, as well as the organisational and strategic aspects; it also stresses the commercial aspects of project management: for example, marketing and sales, financial management, procurement, bidding and contract management.

This MSc is one of four MSc courses within the Management of Projects Group of Programmes. The other MSc courses are: Management of Projects, Construction Project Management and Engineering Project Management.

The School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering has a long history of delivering project management related masters courses and the staff who deliver the programme are drawn for a wide variety of backgrounds and industrial experience.

Teaching and learning

The Commercial Project Management MSc is a full time course which is studied over 12 months, starting in September each year. The course comprises eight taught course units, each worth 15 credits, and a research dissertation worth 60 credits. Students on this particular MSc study four core units fundamental to project management, and which are shared by students on the other MSc courses. In addition, students on this course study Contract Management and programme specific unit, Commercial Management, where students work in teams to produce documents related to the buying and selling side of a case study activity. Students must also select two optional units and carry out a Commercial Project Management based dissertation.

Assessment of the taught part of the programme is via a combination of formal written examinations and coursework assignments, which will include group work and oral presentations. Some assessment is based on online material provided by the Association for Project Management (APM) and PRINCE2 (a process-based method for effective project management).

Career opportunities

The MSc Commercial Project Management Programme acquaints students with the basic processes of project management but focuses more specifically on the commercial aspects of project management, the establishment of stable, profitable and low-risk exchange relationships for project procurement or sales and the management of the contracts that represent these relationships in a range of project settings. Practical skills in the buy and side project procurement, contract management and conflict and dispute resolution are developed. Successful graduates of this programme find employment in a wide range of commercial-related roles, from forensic delay analysis to quantity surveying to general project management in companies such as Blackrock, Costain, Parsons Brinckerhoff, Yendall Hunter, PwC.

Accrediting organisations

The MSc in Commercial Project Management is listed by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM) as an Approved Further Learning Schemes for Chartered Engineer. The JBM represents the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Institution of Structural Engineers, the Institution of Highways and Transportation and the Institute of Highway Incorporated Engineers. This means that successful completion of the MSc will enable applicants with an accredited first degree at BEng level, to become chartered engineers.

You’ll prepare for the challenges of the changing and increasingly global construction industry with a focus on the financial, planning and management aspects of a project life cycle. You’ll explore construction processes from inception and feasibility, design, contact and construction through to commissioning, maintenance, renewal and decommissioning. The philosophy of the course is to develop a “whole life” understanding of constructed facilities and infrastructure.

A choice of optional modules will allow you to strengthen existing technical and engineering skills, or gain an understanding of a new topic. You’ll benefit from the expertise of our Institute for Resilient Infrastructure, the Institute for Public Health and Environmental Engineering and the active research groups across the Faculty of Engineering.

Course content

Throughout the programme you’ll gain an understanding of the different aspects of project management within the construction industry. You’ll learn about common project management tools and techniques, then put this into the “whole project” context and consider when and how to use them.

At the same time, you’ll consider risk management and its role during the project lifecycle. Whole Life Asset Management examines the “whole life management” of infrastructure, with additional focus on operations, maintenance, renewal and decommissioning.

The Applied Construction Management module explores the management process during the execution phase of projects. Another core module will introduce you to a variety of procurement strategies to keep projects running effectively. You’ll also choose from a range of optional modules to focus on topics that suit your interests and career plans.

Over the summer months you’ll work with your supervisor to complete your independent research project – a chance to demonstrate the knowledge and skills you’ve gained and perhaps specialise in an area that relates to your career ambitions.

Learning and teaching

Methods of Learning

You will be taught by experienced academic staff with specialist knowledge of their own subject areas. Taught modules are delivered using a combination of lectures and workshop sessions, with an emphasis on participation and discussion.

For those students wishing to take up the option of a 12-month placement, the course will be 24 months in duration. For those students not wishing to take this option, then the course will be completed in 12 months.

The programme is completed by full time study on Park Campus. Normally, you will complete two semesters of 14 weeks, spending 12-15 hours per week in the classroom with your tutors and fellow students. You will be expected to engage in significant additional study, around 20-25 hours per week in self-directed study, learning and networking and attending additional workshops to support your achievement of the professional body memberships and awards. The full-time programme normally runs twice a year with September and January starts.

Assessments

You will experience a variety of assessment styles including business reports, essays, research papers, oral presentations, practical work, examinations, case study and context analysis, as well as the dissertation.

Brunel’s MSc in Water Engineering is unique in providing specialist knowledge on the critical sub-topics of water and wastewater management and engineering, desalination systems, building water services engineering, industrial waste water management, and water in health care.

During the programme you will also learn about the development and application of models that estimate the carbon and water footprint within the energy and food sector.

Course Content

The primary aim of this programme is to create master’s degree graduates with qualities and transferable skills for demanding employment in the water engineering sector. Graduates will have the independent learning ability required for continuing professional development and acquiring new skills at the highest level.

Specific aims are as follows:

Teaching

Our philosophy is to underpin theoretical aspects of the subject with hands-on experience in applying water engineering techniques. Although you may move on to project management and supervision roles, we feel it important that your knowledge is firmly based on an understanding of how things are done. To this end, industrial partners will provide guest lectures on specialist topics.

In addition to teaching, water engineering staff at Brunel are active researchers. This keeps us at the cutting edge of developments and, we hope, allows us to pass on our enthusiasm for the subject.

How many hours of study are involved?

Contact between students and academic staff is relatively high at around 20 hours per week to assist you in adjusting to university life. As the course progresses the number of contact hours is steadily reduced as you undertake more project-based work.

How will I be taught?

Lectures:
These provide a broad overview of the main concepts and ideas you need to understand and give you a framework on which to expand your knowledge by private study.
Laboratories:
Practicals are generally two- or three-hour sessions in which you can practise your observational and analytical skills, and develop a deeper understanding of theoretical concepts.
Design Studios:
In a studio you will work on individual and group projects with guidance from members of staff. You may be required to produce a design or develop a solution to an engineering problem. These sessions allow you to develop your intellectual ability and practice your teamwork skills.
Site visits:
Learning from real-world examples in an important part of the course. You will visit sites featuring a range of water engineering approaches and asked to evaluate what you see.
One-to-one:
On registration for the course you will be allocated a personal tutor who will be available to provide academic and pastoral support during your time at university. You will get one-to-one supervision on all project work.

Assessment

Several methods of assessment are employed on the course. There are written examinations and coursework. You will undertake projects, assignments, essays, laboratory work and short tests.

Project work is commonplace and is usually completed in groups to imitate the everyday experience in an engineering firm, where specialists must pool their talents to design a solution to a problem.

In this situation you can develop your management and leadership skills and ensure that all members of the group deliver their best. Group members share the mark gained, so it is up to each individual to get the most out of everyone else.

Extensive facilities
Students can make the most of laboratory facilities which are extensive, modern and well equipped. We have recently made a major investment in our Joseph Bazalgette Laboratories which includes hydraulic testing laboratory equipment and facilities such as our open channel flow flumes.

Personal tutors
Although we recruit a large number of highly qualified students to our undergraduate, postgraduate and research degrees each year, we don’t forget that you are an individual. From the beginning of your time here, you are allocated a personal tutor who will guide you through academic and pastoral issues.
