Our course materials are based on real issues faced by contemporary businesses, covering topics ranging from creativity in business to global economics, strategic management and organisational change management.

You’ll learn to creatively address issues such as competition and sustainability and acquire knowledge of the global economic and business environment. FLEXIBLE CURRICULUM

A ‘tailor-designing’ approach towards education is at the core of how we design programs at HEC Paris. Together, these online distance learning programmes offer maximum flexibility to busy health professionals who want to learn about theoretical and practical aspects of learning, teaching and assessment, and apply them in the context of their professional practice. The programmes share a common first year curriculum, with 1 x 20-credit course per semester. Thereafter, students may focus to a greater or lesser extent on various topics in health professions education, selecting from a menu of optional 10-credit courses. The MSc HPE programme is designed for those who primarily identify themselves as practitioners and who want to apply educational theory and an evidence base to their specific health professions education context. The MSc HPE (with Research) programme is appropriate for those with a particular interest in learning about the design, conduct and governance of education research.

Why this programme

◾The programme is delivered primarily by staff in the School of Medicine at the University of Glasgow, including staff with key roles in the undergraduate Medical School, the Dental School and the School of Nursing & Healthcare.

For the MSc HPE and the MSc HPE (with Research), each 180-credit programme is delivered over 3 years:

Year 1

3 x compulsory, 20-credit courses; 1 per semester

Year 2

6 x 10-credit courses, 2 per semester

◾Note that some courses are compulsory for students following the programme 'with Research'.

Year 3

1 x 60-credit project-based course assessed by a dissertation of 10,000 words, excluding appendices.

The project work and write-up are spread across 3 semesters.

On the MSc HPE programme, the dissertation will require a systematic review, synthesis and critique of the literature, to produce a policy document, a set of practitioner guidelines, or a new theoretical model.

On the MSc HPE (with Research), the dissertation will be a standard report of empirical research, incorporating a critical literature review, methodology, analysis and interpretation of findings, and conclusions drawn.
◾Applicants will not need to commit to a specific programme until the beginning of Year 2. Indeed, all applicants will initially be registered on the MSc HPE programme, with the option to switch to the ‘with Research’ variant.
◾Summative assessment varies amongst courses, but includes coursework; quality contributions to online activities; a blog; online presentations; and the dissertation.
◾We will additionally offer an optional, non-assessed residential activity, which current or prospective students may attend. This will help establish a cohort identity and will provide a showcase for masters’ students to present their work.
◾Selected 10- or 20- credit courses are available as stand-alone, credit bearing options.

Career prospects

The PGCert in Health Professions Education will appeal to practising health professions educators who wish to enhance their knowledge and skills in learning, teaching and assessment; and to individuals who aspire to be health professions educators.

The PGDiploma and the parallel MSc programmes are appropriate for healthcare professionals who are ambitious for an influential role in the management and delivery of education in either undergraduate or postgraduate phases.

The MSc HPE programme is particularly relevant for individuals who primarily identify themselves as practitioners and wish to apply their learning in their professional context; whereas the MSc HPE (with Research) will be of interest to those who want to pursue education research.

Clinical psychology focuses on the challenges faced by people with clinical, mental or physical (neuropsychological) health conditions. The role of the clinical psychologist is to work with these individuals and attempt to improve their quality of life. The Master’s degree in Abnormal and Clinical Psychology at Swansea is designed to equip students with an advanced understanding of the theory and practice of clinical psychology in healthcare settings. The primary purpose of the Abnormal and Clinical Psychology course is to allow students to gain knowledge and experience to enhance their suitability for professional clinical training (i.e. a three year DCl in Clinical Psychology programme at a BPS accredited training centre; see http://careers.bps.org.uk/area/clinical).

Entry onto a clinical psychology doctorate training programme is extremely competitive, with candidates usually expected to have acquired training and experience beyond degree level. We have a proven track record of helping our students progress towards clinical psychology training, as well as roles in a range of other clinical mental health-related occupations. Our MSc Abnormal and Clinical Psychology alumni have also secured NHS clinical based placements, providing valuable experience for those seeking to attain Assistant Clinical Psychologist positions.

The majority of our teaching is carried out by practicing and/or qualified Clinical Psychologists and related professionals, ensuring that students are learning from those with direct experience of professional challenges.

Course modules are assessed using a range of different approaches, including written examinations, essays, presentations and clinical case studies.

Study on the course can be undertaken either full time (1 year) or part time (2 years) basis, with teaching condensed into two weekdays to more easily accommodate part-time students and for relevant experience to be gained alongside the degree. Our Sociology master's degrees offer students training in the most significant recent developments in sociology. All three streams enable students to specialise in particular areas, developing their critical and analytical abilities, their methodological skills and their expertise in substantive sociological topics.

Students develop their own research projects in any aspect of the discipline that interests them, and choose optional courses from a wide selection both within and outside the Sociology Department. Each stream emphasises a different aspect of research training, provided through its specification of compulsory courses: MSc Sociology provides a balance of sociological theory, methodology and substantive topics. The Contemporary Social Thought stream is built around a compulsory course in theory and analysis. The MSc Sociology (Research) has a higher weighting of qualitative and quantitative methods training, originally designed as an ESRC approved training course for doctoral studentships.

You take a total of three course units through a combination of full and/or half units and you complete a dissertation of up to 10,000 words on a subject of interest related to the courses and approved by the Department.

General route

Summer period

During the summer period you will be able to choose between two tracks: (1) dissertation track and (2) practice track.
Both tracks allow you to demonstrate critical insight and reflective thinking about business/management/policy issues. The tracks also help develop your written and presentation skills, and your ability to develop effective arguments. All of these attributes are transferable skills relevant to the workplace and your future career.

Dissertation track

The dissertation track gives you the opportunity to do a piece of substantial work on your own, demonstrating originality, innovation, drive, and determination. The dissertation also enables you to plan and execute your own project, giving you complete choice and flexibility.

Practice track

The practice track allows you to undertake a number of tasks, both working in teams with other members of your cohort and working individually. The practice track is designed to allow you to apply learned concepts and theories to practical problems and issues, including a management problem which will be presented to you by an organisation. This track also provides opportunities for gaining practical experience in running team projects.

Unilever to present Case Week Project

The world-leading fast-moving consumer goods company, Unilever, represented by Tony Dunnage, Group Environmental Manager for Unilever, will present a business problem to practice track students on 15 June as part of Case Week.

You will then have two weeks to propose your own solutions to the problem, using the skills and knowledge gained during the programme, under guidance from your supervisors. The week will culminate with poster presentations to Unilever on 26 June.

Our MSc in Cyber Security aims to develop the next generation of industry leaders and address the shortage of cyber security professionals globally. The emphasis of the MSc is to provide graduates with a comprehensive understanding of the cyber security challenges facing industry and society, today and in the future, and equipping them with the skills necessary to address those challenges.

In addition, the Construction Project Management Professional Practice unit is programme specific unit which is designed to simulate the major challenges to delivering a successful construction/civil engineering project through the medium of a `live' case study approach. Students must also select three option units and carry out a Construction Project Management based dissertation.

Assessment of the taught part of the programme is via a combination of formal written examinations and coursework assignments, which will include group work and oral presentations. Some assessment is based on online material provided by the Association for Project Management (APM) and PRINCE2 (a process-based method for effective project management).

Teaching Methods
