This new three year part-time Masters programme, taught entirely online, is jointly offered by the University of Edinburgh and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and leads to the degree of Master of Science (MSc). It has been developed in partnership with NHS Education for Scotland (NES).
Aimed primarily at optometrists seeking formal postgraduate training in community-based clinical care, this programme is also highly relevant for medical and surgical trainees entering specialty training in ophthalmology.
This degree is aligned with the curricula of both the FRCSEd and FRCOphth examinations in the United Kingdom and Ireland, making it very attractive to domestic and international students.

Delivered through an online learning environment, this programme runs on a semester basis over three years and involves approximately 10-15 hours of study each week in a flexible, modular manner. All modules are compulsory and are taught and assessed using a clinical problem-based approach and involve participation in discussion boards and reflective portfolios.
Students accumulate credits by completing a series of modules leading to a Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma or Master of Science degree. The minimum time for completion of the full Masters programme is three years, and the maximum time for completion is six years.

This course has been developed as a stand-alone postgraduate taught programme with a graduate-entry ethos and a fully integrated course structure based on clinical presentations rather than body systems.
We use a combination of problem based learning (PBL) tutorials, small group teaching and lectures to deliver a course with very high levels of staff-student contact time and excellent student satisfaction. The curriculum is delivered through a mixed methods approach incorporating early clinical skills training, reflective practice, clinical immersion, a short elective, distance learning, and a dedicated 'preparation for practice' block.
We use a structured programme of formative and summative assessments to examine the knowledge and skills that you must develop. You will undertake written and OSCE examinations at the end of each year and will maintain a portfolio for personal and professional development (PPD).
The course is non-modular, providing you with an opportunity to develop and consolidate skills throughout each year of the course.
Taught content is delivered in blocks of study of increasing complexity alongside the two longitudinal themes of Personal and Professional Development (PPD) and Consultation Skills (CS), with assessment periods at the end of each year. Each taught block feeds seamlessly into the next and all components of the programme are compulsory.

Course content for Year 1
The first year of the course begins with a four-month period of intensive study where you will develop your understanding of the essential basic and clinical sciences that facilitate safe and effective practice.
After this 16-week taught block, you will rotate through a series of medical and surgical placements, each incorporating a short period of university-based teaching.
The curriculum is built around a core content of common clinical situations that are then organised according to their relative complexity. The content of each taught block is delivered using a problem-based learning (PBL) approach through the study of clinical cases/scenarios.
Each case integrates elements of the taught content and you will learn about and reflect upon the related biomedical, behavioural and population sciences appropriate to the case.
PBL is supported by small group teaching, lectures and workshops to form a truly integrated curriculum with very high levels of contact time.
Course content for Year 2
The second year of the course provides more advanced specialist instruction in the core medical and clinical sciences alongside a comprehensive programme of clinical reasoning to prepare you to sit your national postgraduate examinations.
This course is part of a wider collaboration across the north-west. We work in partnership with Health Education England and the Universities of Liverpool and Central Lancashire to develop the physician associate role across the region.
The three universities collaborate in interviewing applicants and you apply directly to the HEE North West physician associate programme, indicating your preference of university on the application form.
You will have access to medical facilities at the University (similar to students studying the Medicine MBChB course) with a focus on clinical teaching and highly advanced clinical simulation.

Perioperative medicine is a rapidly evolving and exciting field committed to providing excellent care to surgical patients. This new Master's programme, delivered via e-learning, will address the challenges posed by the high-risk surgical patient and is designed to equip those involved in managing surgical care with extensive knowledge, underpinned by best evidence, and encourage a deep understanding of the specialty.
Students learn by walking the patient journey, from diagnosis to discharge. Developing an understanding of the individual needs of patients and how to assess risk and outcomes will be followed by an outline of the surgical inflammatory response. Students will be introduced to statistical study design as it applies to research and understand changes in guidance. Quality, safety and leadership matters are covered in great detail.
Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.
The programme consists of eight core modules (120 credits) and a dissertation/report (60 credits).
A Postgraduate Diploma (120 credits, flexible study, up to five years) is offered.
A Postgraduate Certificate (60 credits, flexible study, up to two years) is offered.
There are no optional modules for this programme.
Students will undertake a piece of original research (which might include a systematic review), developed and presented in the style of a nominated peer-reviewed journal and students will be encouraged to publish this work as part of their learning experience.
Teaching and learning
The programme is delivered entirely through distance e-learning methodology. A wide range of learning styles are catered for within the programme material including vodcasts, podcasts, formal written text, online seminars, case reviews and graphics. The MSc adopts a range of examination styles including short answer questions, short essay writing, reflective practice and contributing to case-based discussions. The examination process will include both summative and formative assessment and help develop students’ writing styles.

UCL's Perioperative Medicine MSc will provide an internationally recognised qualification, and on completion students will be equipped to pioneer progress and develop quality improvements in this new field. This programme aims to impart a robust scientific understanding of burns, plastic and reconstructive surgery, and to equip healthcare professionals (doctors, surgeons, nursing staff and physiotherapists) and scientists with the research techniques and translational tools necessary for research in this expanding field.

Establishing a career in surgery is becoming very competitive, and students on this programme benefit from the latest knowledge and experience in this expanding field. On completion, graduates find they are in a better position to find placements due to the wide exposure they have had to emerging technologies such as nanotechnology, regenerative medicine, and speciality plastic surgery. This MSc also provides our students with an excellent foundation for further research either at MD or PhD level or for a career as a clinician or healthcare professional within this surgical speciality.

This MSc focuses on research as well as theory and students acquire technical, laboratory-based skills. Networking is also one of the key aspects of this programme. In veterinary management of animals, anaesthesia (rendering animals unconscious to permit procedures) and analgesia (reducing the pain an animal is suffering) have vital importance in improving animal welfare, as well as permitting the ongoing developments in medical and surgical advances.
Knowledge and advances in anaesthesia over the last 20 years have been considerable. We can use techniques to block sensation locally or over a region of the body not just total unconsciousness. We have an array of drugs and methods of drug administration available to us in our fight against pain. Anaesthesia has always carried risks, and we have an increasing availability of monitoring equipment to help us monitor the physiological function of the body during anaesthesia with the aim of reducing morbidity and mortality in our animals.

During the written reflective element of the programme you will have the opportunity to further develop your scientific skills and utilise scientific theory. The form of the dissertation may vary to suit individual candidates, subject to approval of a submitted proposal. The dissertation will be a piece of written work 10-15,000 words long, which may take the form of a research study, analysis of techniques used in previous clinical work or an extended literature review. A casebook or portfolio submission may also be permitted.
The MSc Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia is likely to be desirable for veterinary surgeons seeking employment in research environments (e.g. as Named Veterinary Surgeon or other roles) due to the key importance of anaesthesia and the emphasis on this from Home Office regulation of research work in the UK.
The MSc will be a different route for progression for veterinary nurses who have key roles in private veterinary practices with regard to veterinary anaesthesia and analgesia. This may be desirable for practices wishing to show a wide range of expertise amongst their staff and patient support for surgical procedures.
