The Graduate Certificate in Business Development in International Education is a one-year, nine-credit program that focuses on the increasing need for educational leaders who can make sound and nimble business decisions about programs, policies, and practices related to international education. The program will help students develop the skills required to develop, grow, or manage international education programs aligned with the strategic interests of their educational organizations. Students will examine key facets of the business side of international education -- including business development, marketing and recruitment strategies, contract management, policy analysis and risk management – and will consider the implications of these facets within their own organizational context.

Who It’s For

Colleges, universities, technological institutes, and secondary schools are all embracing internationalization of their programs. With the growth of international programs and schools and the increasing numbers of international students in educational institutions in many parts of the world, comes a growing demand for leaders who can provide their organization with a strategic vision and a strong sense of business acumen about international education and its potential within the organization. Applicants who do not have the formal academic education to qualify for admission may be assessed on the basis of both their formal education and their informal learning, in accordance with the Flexible Admission Policy.

Delivery Model

The Graduate Certificate in Business Development in International Education is delivered online. Participants draw upon web resources as well as more traditional print media, while using online discussion groups and drop boxes to work towards the electronic submission of assignments. Prior to the beginning of each course, students are provided with a list of resources including textbooks and/or online readings, plus a detailed course schedule. Learning activities and assignments are designed to allow participants to identify the practical applications of the course content and to work with others to construct both a personal and shared meaning from their experiences.

Each course requires a level of effort of approximately 10 hours per week. This varies from student to student and becomes easier as students familiarize themselves with Royal Roads University's distance learning technologies, and learn how to work effectively with team members in a virtual setting.

International education is a complex and changing subject. Education professionals have the challenge of promoting economic growth and competition, while supporting the development of sustainable and cohesive societies to promote equity and social justice.

Attracting individuals across the UK and around the world, this course asks you to think deeply around questions relating to the economics, politics and social issues relating to education and development. We’ll equip you with a good grounding in statistical and qualitative research approaches, to prepare you for your dissertation module in the final trimester.

COURSE STRUCTURE

We’ll give you an in-depth understanding of the issues relating to educational development around the world. You’ll have opportunities work with, and learn from, students taking our other MA education programmes – Education Studies: Early Years; and Education: Leadership and Management. This can add breadth to your study, alongside your primary focus on international education.

We’ll equip you with a good grounding in statistical and qualitative research approaches. This will prepare you for writing your dissertation in the final trimester, in which you’ll develop your knowledge and understanding in a particular area of international education through in-depth research.

The course is structured over three trimesters and totals 180 credits.

MODULES

In your first trimester, you’ll study the MA Education core module Education: Economics, Politics and Society plus your award core module.

In the second trimester, you’ll study the core module Social Science Research, plus two 15-credit elective modules, one of which may be a shared elective from another MA award.

In your third trimester, you’ll research and write your Dissertation on a topic relevant to your award.

TEACHING METHODS

You’ll benefit from a rich and stimulating learning environment. The course is taught by active researchers with up-to-date knowledge of International Education. All modules are taught through lectures, small-group seminars and individual tutorials.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

There are no written exams on this course; each module is assessed through coursework. This typically involves an essay of 2,500 words for a 15 credit module or 5,000 words for a 30 credit module. For some modules assessment may be by verbal presentation or online activity. The dissertation is 15,000 – 20,000 words and focuses on an area agreed with a specialist tutor, who will offer guidance on structure and academic writing.

You will study a multidisciplinary postgraduate degree course consisting of six 20 credit modules and one 60 credit dissertation. It can be studied full-time over the course of one year, or up to three years part-time.

This specialist programme is suitable for educators such as teachers, school leaders, lecturers, inspectors, administrators and officials who want to gain an insight into educational policy issues of current global significance and their implications for the effective leadership of educational institutions.

The policy themes are covered in the first semester, and the leadership and management implications are covered in the second semester. Both areas emphasise an international comparative perspective.

Optional modules are to be taken from across the School of Education to place your studies in a broader context, including those tat cover research methods; technology, education and society; and special educational needs. There is also access to modules offered in the School of Politics and International Studies, including education and development, global justice, and global inequalities and development.

Participants from around the world come together to learn from each other as well as our tutors: all of whom are expert researchers in their fields. You’ll learn to apply critically educational theories to real challenges affecting schools, further and higher education worldwide.

You’ll have a wide range of opportunities to enhance your learning.

In your first year of postgraduate study, you’ll be able to join the British Educational Leadership Management and Administration Society (BELMAS), complete with the access to leading journals and events that it provides, including its annual conference. You’ll also be encouraged to join the Commonwealth Council for Educational Administration (CCEA).

In addition, we provide opportunities for educational visits, including a local school and a visit to London to discuss educational policy development with the local MP and civil servants.

The programme provides a comprehensive coverage of educational policy, leadership and management from an international comparative perspective.

There will be a wide choice of assignment topics, so that you can focus on themes of personal professional interest, including policy and leadership issues relating to schools, colleges and/or universities.

From the beginning of the programme, you’ll develop your research skills and apply them to your critical study. This gives you the chance to conduct independent research on a topic of your choice, which may be related to your own professional background.

You’ll be expected to sit in on our Getting Started: Research Questions and Approaches module to improve your understanding of educational research, unless your tutor believes you already have enough knowledge in this area.

If you choose to study part-time, you’ll study over a longer period and take fewer modules in each year.

Learning and teaching

Most of our taught modules use a combination of lectures, seminars and tutorials, and you’ll also be able to enhance your learning by attending the visits we organise to government departments and educational institutions.

However, independent study is also an important part of this programme, allowing you to form your own ideas and develop high-level skills.

Assessment

We assess the module Contemporary Global Challenges for Research-informed Education Policy and Practice through an oral presentation on an educational policy issue supported by either a PowerPoint or a Poster to the equivalent of a 3,000 word assignment (worth 50%) and a 3,000 word essay assignment (worth 50%).

The assessment for Critical Perspectives on Educational Leadership Theory and Practice is through a single essay of around 6,000 words. This will provide a transition in the preparation of a more extended piece of writing leading up to the 12,000 word critical study.

Other modules selected from the School of Education and/or the School of Politics and International Studies may use similar or different methods of assessment, such as assignments, reflective logs and portfolio work, depending on the modules you choose.

Are you a teacher in an international school who would like to develop your professional practice? The aim of this programme is to support your career development with a tight focus on the international school system and its challenges and opportunities.

In the final stage of the programme you will study topics such as ‘Leading and Managing in International Schools’ and ‘The International School Curriculum’. During these modules you will also carry out small-scale research projects into issues concerning management and the International School curriculum that are relevant to your current practice.

At Stage 1 of the programme you will complete two compulsory modules ‘Development of Learning: A Case Study’ and a Negotiated Individual Study in Education. At Stage 2 you will choose two modules from a list that covers areas such as advanced pedagogical practice, assessment theory and organisational effectiveness in education. Please note that there is no dissertation in this programme.

The content of the programme is informed by research by Sunderland’s Centre for Pedagogy whose specialisms include teaching styles, motivation, human relationships in learning and comparative education.
