A specialized track about the tension between competition and regulation:
Fair competition is essential for the functioning of markets. Consumers can make better decisions if they are well informed about prices, service conditions, and product quality. Firms will be able to exploit their competencies if they are operating at a level playing field.

At the same time, firms benefit from shielding themselves from competition of their rivals in the market. And being successful may create a monopoly position. It is this tension between competition and regulation that makes a deep analysis of markets both intellectually interesting and practically relevant for corporate strategists and policy makers.

Apply Industrial Organization and Competition Law to business strategies and regulatory policies:
In the 'Competition and Regulation' track, you will learn how to apply insights from Industrial Organization and Competition Law, to business strategies and to regulatory policies. Cases deal with, for example, the lack of competition in certain markets (electricity, telecommunication services) and the response by national governments and the European Union.

This track is closely linked to the Tilburg Law and Economics research center TiLEC.

In these courses, you analyze causes of imperfect competition and identify rules and regulations that ensure fair competition while mitigating possible negative effects on productivity and technological change. The MA Economics Program includes two streams: (i) Research-Based Stream (RBS) and (ii) Course-Based Stream (CBS). RBS consists of eight one-term graduate courses and a Master's Report while CBS consists of 10 graduate courses. Applicants should declare their preferred stream at the time of application. Once in the program, students can apply for a change in their stream based on academic performance.

The foundations of the MA program is a core of courses in microeconomics, macroeconomics and quantitative methods. Courses in regional economic development, transportation economics, environmental economics, health economics, industrial organization, public policy and applied econometrics are regularly offered. For both the RBS and CBS there are two options in terms of the duration and content of the program: one-year program and two-year program.

We generally have about 30 students in the program. Students have access to working or researching in the Policy Studies Centre under the leadership of the Vaughan Chair in Regional Economics (Dr. Herb Emery), and also the NB-IRDT (New Brunswick Institute of Research, Data and Training), headed by Dr. Ted McDonald.

The Master’s programme Industrial engineering and management aims to give students with a solid base in engineering the tools needed to integrate engineering, economy and mathematics and prepare students for careers as managers and project leaders in the industry.

Building upon the students’ engineering background the programme provides knowledge in industrial management through a multi-disciplinary approach. It also increases their ability to adopt changes in the industrial environment in an efficient and responsible manner.

The first term consists of mandatory courses in Industrial project management, Corporate organization, Corporate finance, and Quality Management which puts the student’s engineering skills into the context of industrial management. The second and following terms, students choose to specialize themselves in the fields of Innovation Management, Operation Management, Finance or Quality Management.

The Operation Management profile teaches the skills needed to apply a holistic view of production and operations management issues in both manufacturing and service industries. This profile is mathematically intensive and utilizes quantitative methods to describe problems, analyze operations issues, and provide solutions for industries facing a dynamic, changing environment.

The Innovation Management profile focuses on developing and commercializing innovative products and new solutions. Central skills are technology and project management, product development and entrepreneurship.

The Finance profile deals with the theories and tools used in the financial markets such as financial instruments, asset pricing, risk management, portfolio evaluation and optimal asset management.

The Quality management profile provides knowledge on approaches for creating and sustaining an effective organisation. Quality management is a set of concepts and practices characterized by core principles such as customer focus, process management, continuous improvement, everyone’s participation, base decisions on fact and committed leadership. One of the central questions is how an organisation can improve its processes to provide maximum benefits to customers through the best use of available resources.

Employment and career opportunities

Following graduation students are prepared for interesting careers in cutting edge industries, for example as a R&D project leader in larger, technologically intensive companies or as a CTO at smaller companies or start-up. Learning objectives

During the first year, students will study the foundations of economics and quantitative analysis, whereas the second year is devoted to field courses that will expose them to recent developments at the frontier of economic research in a variety of topics. At the end of the second year students will work on their final dissertation. The curriculum also offers an internship program with either economic research institutions located in the Milan area or within the University’s Department of Economics and Finance, where student are offered the opportunity to work as an applied economists on real world economic issues, as well as meeting prospective employers. The skills acquired through the M.Sc. in Economics prepare students to pursue their careers both in academia through further education at the Ph.D. level as well as in the labour market as applied economists in firms, banks and institutions.

The department

As a student in the Department of Psychology, you will undertake a survey of current knowledge and viewpoints about the science of behavior and cognitive processes. You will learn the research methods by which such knowledge is obtained, and be given the opportunity to study basic psychological processes, their development, the nature of behavioral aberrations, their treatment, and selected applications of this knowledge.

The undergraduate and graduate programs in Psychology encompass child and adult psychology, abnormal behavior, therapy, and psychological testing. The curricula explores the sciences of psychology—learning, perception, behavioral neuroscience, developmental processes, and normal and abnormal processes—and their practical application. In addition to classroom studies, you will gain hands-on experience at community youth centers, hospitals, human resource departments, and agencies that serve developmentally disabled children and adults.

Fully accredited by the American Psychological Association, the Clinical Psychology Doctoral Program (Psy.D.), trains students who want to practice as clinical psychologists with a strong interest in traditionally underserved populations. In addition to mastering a rigorous core curriculum, Psy.D. students gain special competencies in two of four areas: Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Assessment and Treatment of Substance Use Disorders, Interventions with High-Risk Families, and Serious Mental Illness.

M.A. in Experimental Psychology

In earning this 36-credit Master of Arts degree in Experimental Psychology you will strengthen your research, writing and critical-thinking skills while broadening and deepening your knowledge of behavior. The MA program at the University of Calgary supplies students with a strong foundation of theoretical and empirical knowledge. Students can also diversify their academic portfolio by choosing their own areas of specialization. Areas of specialization at our Department of Economics include, but are not limited to: international trade, environmental economics, industrial organization, and behavioral economics.

We offer two different M.A. programs: Course- Based and Thesis-Based.

Our Course-based MA program is a twelve month program consisting of both course work and a major research project. Approximately 20 students are admitted to this program every year. This program is designed to prepare students for employment in the public or private sector, or to pursue further studies in a PhD program. Recent graduates have taken positions at such institutions as Canadian Pacific, BMO Financial Group, and the Alberta Utilities Commission.

Our Thesis-based MA program is intended for MA students with a greater interest in independent research. In return for a slightly reduced course load, students are required to prepare and orally defend a formal thesis (original research). Students usually complete this program in 12 to 24 months and recent graduates have gone on to work in such institutions as Industry Canada and have earned placement in PhD programs ranging from UBC to Princeton University.

Our faculty continuously receive funding from the Social Science and Humanities Research Council as well as other agencies. Some members of our faculty also hold Tier I and II Canada Research Chairs. Because of this, we can offer our M.A. students ample opportunity to gain research experience at the University of Calgary. Given our large undergraduate base, M.A. students have a very high likelihood of consistently getting a full Teaching Assistantship position each semester.

Our students have access to a plethora of information pertinent to their research and learning through our libraries which includes textbooks, handbooks and journals in all the specializations that we offer. We are also home to a federal data centre that permits students to apply directly for their own research agendas.

We encourage our senior students to participate in a mentoring program for incoming students. If you are anxious about joining our Economics department, coming to the university, or living in Calgary in general, you can request a mentor to help you adjust to the University of Calgary lifestyle.

M.A. students have access to a number of recreational facilities including a fully equipped gym, swimming pool, and squash courts. Access to such facilities is included with tuition. Our department holds start of semester welcoming parties, Christmas parties and a variety of social events are carried out by our student graduate association.

MA Course-based

The standard course-based MA program is a twelve month combination of formal coursework and closely supervised structured research. Students complete two semesters of course work in the fall and winter terms and must complete no less than seven one semester graduate courses. In addition to the standard seven one semester graduate courses, students are required to enroll in a set of four research methods courses over the course of their twelve month program of study. These courses are conducted by active researchers in the economics department and are intended to provide structure and help for students through the process of conducting original research in economics. The program is capped by a formal research paper which is completed over the spring and summer semesters. Students are required to present their paper at the department’s annual “open conference” held in August.

MA Thesis-based

The Thesis based MA program is similar to the course based but replaces the closely supervised structured research with a less formal supervision arrangement. Instead of enrolling in the four research methods courses, thesis based students will be expected to find a single faculty member to supervise their research. The research paper requirement is also replaced by a formal thesis. The quality and originality of a formal thesis is required to be higher than that of the course based research paper. Additionally, thesis based students are required to undergo a formal oral thesis defense. Given the increased demands of a formal thesis, thesis based students are required to take six one semester graduate courses rather than the seven required for course based students.

Course Descriptions

- HES 512 - Introduction to Environmental Health & Safety Management

This course presents an overview of environmental health and safety (EH&S) management with its emphasis on preventing workplace injuries, illnesses, and fatalities. The importance of considering relevant science and engineering in all EH&S management decisions is emphasized. Governmental regulations and insurance matters affecting EH&S performance also are identified and discussed. Qualifications for employment in the field of EH&S management are described and current career opportunities are explored.

- HES 513- Occupational Health & Safety Law

This course will provide students with a fundamental understanding of issues that can impact upon private sector employers under the Federal Occupational Safety and Health Act, including rule making, the duty to comply with standards, General Duty Clause, requirements at multi-employer worksites, record-keeping, employer and employee rights, refusal to work and whistle blower protection, hazard communication, voluntary safety and health audits, inspections and investigations, citations, criminal enforcement, and judicial review. This course will also provide students with an introduction to peripheral “toxic tort” law concepts that should be understood by Safety and Health Managers including theories of liability, CERCLA liability, employer liability, tort defenses, causation, injuries, damages, and mass tort actions.

- HES 514- Health & Safety Regulations & Regulatory Compliance

This course addresses regulatory compliance as an important objective of all EH & S managers and the companies they represent. Focus is directed to workplace regulations of the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). The purpose, history, structure, jurisdiction, and operations of the agency are presented. Major health and safety standards that have been promulgated by OSHA are considered in some detail. Students learn how their organization can prepare for and respond to OSHA inspections effectively.

- HES 516- Practical Statistics for Safety Professionals

This course provides students with an introduction to basic research methods and statistical analysis for safety managers. Students will be introduced to foundational concepts of problem statement development, variables, hypothesis testing, and research design. Additionally, relevant descriptive and inferential statistic used in the field of Occupational Health and Safety will be covered with an emphasis on the interpretation of results. Students will learn a variety of descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. The inferential techniques include an emphasis on statistical inference that is commonly used in safety management (e.g., t-tests and correlation). The course is designed to provide the student with an understanding of the basic research methods and statistical concepts required by safety managers to identify and mitigate risks using quantitative measures.

- HES 518 - Environmental Law

This course will provide students with a framework understanding of key federal environmental statutes and regulatory requirements that are likely to impact upon the day-to-day operation of a business or industrial facility that a company's Safety and Health Manager should be familiar with, including the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), Emergency Planning and Community Right to Know Act (EPCRA), Underground Storage Tank (UST) program, Clean Air Act (CAA), Clean Water Act (CWA), Oil Pollution Act (OPA), Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) and Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA).

- CSM 537- Developing the Leader Within

This course takes an in-depth look at leadership theories, principles, qualities, styles, and models with a focus on developing leadership skills and potential within the individual students. Designed to assist students in identifying leadership styles, traits, strengths, and opportunities for improvement, this course will use self-assessment exercises, journaling, individual case studies, group case studies, active and collaborative learning exercises, and a field experience to explore the topic of leadership in depth. Each student will create a personal and individually-tailored plan for development of leadership skills in a field experience that will be helpful in preparing for future endeavors.

- CSM 525- Consumer Conflict Resolution

CSM 425/525 is an exploration of practical conflict mediation, negotiation, and management and a survey of theory and practice of formal and informal mediation.

The members of Brain and Cognitive Science are interested in the mental processes and brain structures that are involved in movement, perception, learning, memory and understanding language. We study how these capabilities emerge during infancy, how they change as the brain matures and ages, and how they are affected when the brain is injured. Our goal is to understand behaviour and cognition at the level of neurons, networks of neurons and cognitive systems.

Industrial/ Organizational Psychology

Industrial-Organizational Psychology is concerned with individual behaviour, the behaviour of groups and the relationships of organization-wide variables to individuals and groups in work settings. Research in Industrial-Organizational Psychology includes, but is not limited to: job analysis and evaluation, selection, training and performance appraisal of personnel, the structure and context of organizations, organizational culture, organizational change, career development, motivation, job satisfaction, and team dynamics.

The Industrial/Organizational Specialization is recognized by the Department of Psychology and Faculty of Graduate Studies - it is an official specialization that will be noted on students' degree parchments.

Social and Theoretical Psychology

The Specializing Master in Color Design and Technology, held in collaboration with Associazione Italiana Colore, aims to provide advanced training to professionals, so as to enable them to understand and manage the many technological and design issues, often across many disciplinary areas, typical of all those professional and research sectors in which the use and management of color are essential. Examples of such production areas include industrial product design, interior architecture, communication, fashion, entertainment and urban planning. Particular attention will be paid to analyzing and summarizing utilization, control, ideation, organization and planning through the use of color. Consequently, color is not treated as a simple attribute of objects or surfaces, but as a means of expression and design underlying perception and interaction with reality.

The Specializing Master consists of two phases. The theory and technique based phase aims to train students in the technical aspects of measurement, control, digital reproduction and comparison relating to disciplines such as physics, optics, colorimetry, chemistry, psychology and perception. The second phase focuses on the methods learned, which will be contextualized and experimented in different color application and design areas such as interior design, urban spaces, industrial products, fashion and communication.
